Abstract:
The host-plant acceptance behaviour of aphids was examined, in two aphid species, the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi and the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphum pisum, to elucidate the recognition factors used to assess plant suitability for parthenogenetic reproduction. In addition, host-plant chemistry was investigated to study possible cues that initiated reproduction. The probing and parturition behaviour of R. padi on barley, Hordeum vulgare, or bird cherry leaves, Prunus padus, were monitored by electrical penetration graph (EPG) coupled with a simultaneous video recording. The siting of municipal solid waste disposal facilities is often unsuccessful or delayed because of host community opposition. Physical, economic, social and political impacts of landfill and an incinerator site are identified, assessed and combined in a rational model to explain the cause of opposition. Residents' beliefs about facility impacts correspond well with the assessed physical impacts at the landfill in identifying odor, birds, traffic, water emissions and explosion risks as negative impacts and convenient disposal as a benefit. Abstract Galvanizing (Hot Dipped and Mechanical) and electroplating are not acceptable finishes for ASTM A490 bolts due to their susceptibility to Hydrogen Embrittlement caused by the high hardness/strength of the bolts. Innovations in water-based inorganic coating technology since this prohibition was enacted have alleviated the concerns with applying a coating to these bolts. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that this technology can allow the utilization of galvanic protection without fear of Hydrogen Embrittlement. Testing has been conducted in order to show that these coatings a

Abstract The development of new alloys for hot automotive exhaust components provides the automotive industry an opportunity to select an optimal alloy with sufficient corrosion resistance for a given application at an acceptable cost. Not only is an automotive exhaust flexible connector exposed to high-temperature exhaust gases found in combustion and to the cyclic environment of engine operation, but the bellows component can also be exposed to halide road deicing salts under wet or dry conditions. When hot components are exposed to salts (or ash), deposit-assisted corrosion can be a signifi

Abstract Fiberglass pipelines have been used in underground installations for over twenty years in handling, first crude oil, but also for many types of chemicals and hot or cold water. The economics and service history generally have been very good, and the acceptance in the market place has increased steadily. Cost comparison reports (chiefly in CHEMICAL ENGINEERING magazine) have shown that fiberglass piping is less expensive than almost any other material, even less than PVC in some sizes, chiefly because of the lower installation costs. Designs must allow for the flexibility of fiberglass

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Central Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Acceptance Lab was opened on March 29, 2018 at the Office of Materials Management (OMM) facility in Indianapolis. The state-of-the-art lab conducts acceptance testing on HMA samples from INDOT’s Crawfordsville and Greenfield districts, as well as testing of appeals samples from the other four INDOT districts. Each HMA sample undergoes multiple sequences acceptance testing processes. In 2019, project SPR-4353 “Central HMA Acceptance Lab Process Improvement Project” was conducted with the goal to improve organization,

Abstract:
According to the current standard specifications and special provisions within the Illinois Department of Transportation, four quality assurance (QA) parameters are used to assess acceptability to remain in place for hot-mix asphalt (HMA) construction projects. However, when these parameters fall outside acceptable limits, it is not clear what impact this has on the pavement service life. This report, therefore, conducted a thorough literature review of studies on QA parameters and their effects on pavement service life and studied the standard specifications of each state to determine what th

This study reviews the Illinois Department of Transportation’s full-depth asphalt, limiting strain criterion, and asphalt over rubblized concrete design procedures, considering technological advancements in hot-mix asphalt—namely, the increased use of recycled materials and modified asphalt binders. The researchers evaluated the current |E*| algorithm by conducting laboratory tests with four mix designs and seven asphalt binders of different Superpave performance grades. The method of heating water by means of a water jacket installed in the firebox of a solid-fuel burner, connected by pipes to a hot-water cylinder (HWC), was once commonplace in New Zealand, but has become less so in recent years. These systems, known as wetbacks, are covered by Building Code Clause G12, but considerable confusion has been caused by conflicting rules specified in the two main compliance documents, G12/AS1 and AS/NZS 3500.4 (hot water). In both compliance documents, wetback systems are defined as ‘uncontrolled heat sources’ with specific rules and limitations that stipulate how

The smoke detector in the ESS signaled an alarm condition at approximately 16:55 hours and discharged a total flooding clean agent suppressant (Novec 1230). The injured firefighters were members of a hazardous materials (HAZMAT) team that arrived on the scene at approximately 18:28 hours. The HAZMAT team noted low-lyin

Transmission pipeline girth welds are fabricated and inspected to rigorous material standards such as API 1104, CSA Z 184 and BSI 4515. These standards contain weld defect acceptance levels based on good workmanship criteria and have been arrived at on the basis of traditional welding and inspection practices. In certain instances, defects that do not meet the workmanship standards have been accepted on the basis of an engineering critical assessment (ECA) using the British Standard PD 6493 assessment technique. The use of ECA is now being incorporated into the pipeline codes. Four girth welds
