Many clusters of galaxies contain large quantities of hot diffuse gas. I have studied the properties of waves in this gas using Lagrangian perturbations. The gas is far more thermally stable than is commonly thought. For bremsstrahlung cooling, all modes that remain oscillatory are damped. Galaxy motions, especially the oscillations of a central cD galaxy, are an important way of generating large amplitude waves in cluster gas. This is especially pertinent in view of the growing realization that cD galaxies are not at rest with respect to the cluster. I also present evidence that weak magnetic

Temperature is one of the parameters that limits the output torque and reduces the lifespan of electrical machines. Models that can provide accurate estimation of the temperature field in the most critical components (e.g. windings) at lower computational effort can be useful to improve the design process and reduce the time to market. Depending on the application, engineers usually rely on hi-fidelity models, e.g. based on the finite elements method (FEM), or lower order models, e.g. thermal equivalent circuits (TECs). Electric hot water tanks play a pivotal role as demand response assets within the UK's energy system by storing heat when energy is inexpensive and delivering domestic hot water when it is required. This role will become increasingly important if non-dispatchable renewable energy sources are to play a bigger part in the energy mix. Historically, the design standards relating to hot water tanks have focused primarily on minimising heat losses. However, in addition to preserving energy, a hot water tank should preserve the availability of heat above a useful temperature for as long as possible t

Erythrocytes infected by mature forms of the Plasmodium falciparum parasite adhere to other components of the vascular space, a behavior considered critical to the pathogenesis of severe malaria. Adhesion is mediated by the P. falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1 (PfEMP1), a highly variant antigen expressed by the parasite and subject to switching during the course of an infection. The host ligands of PfEMP1 include CD36, ICAM-1 and the ABO antigens. By employing a series of population- and family-based association studies from multiple African populations, we examined whether variation i

This thesis describes the synthesis of halogen bonding receptors for integration within interlocked anion host systems. Chapter 1 introduces the field of supramolecular chemistry, with a particular focus on anion recognition and sensing, halogen bonding, and the synthesis of mechanically interlocked structures. Chapter 2 describes the preparation and anion binding properties of carbazole-based receptor molecules. A systematic anion binding study on a series of halogen- and hydrogen-bonding 3,6-bis-triazolium carbazole acyclic receptors is described initially, followed by the development of a h

Object recognition is a much studied computer vision problem, where the task is to find a given object in an image. This Master Thesis aims at doing a MATLAB implementation of an object recognition algorithm that finds three kinds of objects in images: electrical outlets, light switches and wall mounted air-conditioning controls. Visually, these three objects are quite similar and the aim is to be able to locate these objects in an image, as well as being able to distinguish them from one another. The object recognition was accomplished using Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG). During the t

This thesis studies the relationship between type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and their host galaxies. The sample consists of 527 SNe Ia with redshift z<0.09 discovered by the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF). We obtained high-quality photometric and spectroscopic data of the host galaxies and determined their stellar mass Mstellar, star formation rate (SFR), gas-phase/stellar metallicity, stellar age and SN offset. In the first part of the analysis, we compare the SN Ia photometric properties to the host parameters. Strong correlations between the SN Ia light-curve width (stretch) and

The Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pandemic has resulted in a heavy global disease burden, and clinically causes Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The development of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has achieved remarkable control of the rapidly evolving HIV. However, HIV remains neither curable nor preventable by vaccine, and in the developing regions worst affected by HIV, HAART remains inaccessible to most patients. Furthermore, the change in both immunology and viral evolution during chronic HIV infection and its relation to AIDS pathogenesis remains unknown. Foll
