Full textBy looking at other qualities than the picturesque and the castle and there by give a more nuanced picture of Mariefred the hotel will be tolerant of the city's development. Mariefred has to relate to a new relatively large structure but also get a lot back. In turn the hotel relates to the site's needs and conditions as public space, height, rich outdoor life, climate and seasonal changes. The hotel serves as a node for outdoor activities locally and as the end of a branch of Sörmlandsleden. In the area you can hike, canoe, sail, perform geocaching, fish, climb and ice skate. The building fills up during the summer with activities that belongs and there are several public functions. The structure is a fine wooden framework that covers almost the entire plot that visitors experiencing both horizontally and vertically, visually and in motion. Room, floor and stairs are built into the structure and has to relate to its dimensions at the same time enables for a climbing sensation and flexibility to the hotel to change for future needs. Guests are given the opportunity to live close to the current climate by the house being divided into three climate zones. At winter a weave of isolation is being rolled out like a roof over the lounge to form a warm core. A thick wall heats up the core and serves as a large interconnected fireplace where you can enjoy a fire or sleep against the heated wall.

Full textHotel Atrium is built in the small town Mariefred, which is a seasonal tourist resort. The hotel offers public functions for both hotel residents and residents of Mariefred. It is in the hotel that meetings between residents and guest occurs, between acquaintances and strangers , between new and old faces . The hotel is to be open and accessible to all, so it was important with public functions on the ground floor. Light, meetings, sight lines and movements , that characterizes the site, are found in the hotel's atrium that gives the sought light and sight lines. The strict form has a playful expression in the facade to create an interesting addition to the site and a contrasting relationship to the central oval room. Around the atrium there are exterior corridors to which the lobby is the central room that you can overlook from the balconies and take part of the life there, inspired by Arabic and cloister architecture.

Full textThe basis of the project was the assignment of creating a small hotel in the town of Mariefred that would relate to the town in a meaningful way. To handle the conflicting needs of the hotel typology consisting of - on the one hand public, vibrant parts and on the other hand private, quiet hotel rooms - the project took inspiration from the trees in the assigned site which gave peace to a relatively lively place. The hotel’s various rooms, group of rooms and the plan has thus been inspired by a tree analogy. The project also has examined a plan characterised of rooms and functions connected in a flow with minimised space solely dedicated for circulation. Groups of rooms with specific functions is organised according to presumed flows of guests, staff and other logistics. Flexibility in the plan was also part of the process with the result of a big variety of interconnected hotel rooms and the possibility of temporary additional programs on the ground floor. A significant challenge in the process was to let the tree analogy stay as an inspiration for meaningful architecture without being pretentious. Another big challenge was to get the flowing, flexible room relationships to a functional floor plan and still be able to develop the project architecturally otherwise.
Heymowska, Helena. "Ensamma tillsammans : Hotell i Mariefred." Thesis, KTH, Arkitektur, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-168603.
Full textTravelling takes place in corridors and pockets - spaces inbetween here and there. Characterized by volatility and anonymity, these rooms provide an optimal platform for introspective activity. On the bus, the train, at the airport, the hotel - we are alone together. The project is based on a theoretical investigation of hotels and other non-places that the global society of communications has spawned. The temporary rooms that traveling and hotel stays provide, create a platform for us to question and evaluate our selves and our identity. The investigation focuses on how individuals who find themselves at a distance from "reality" react and are impacted. Mariefred is a particularly well suited location for a hotel that markets itself as a place one can go to to be alone togehter with others and to fully allow oneself to be in the between - both physically and mentally. The ambition has been to develop a hotel where the architecture - both visually, spatially and conceptually - enhances and encourages antisocial togetherness and introverted exploration.

Full textHow to preserve a city's character? Todays architect of Gripsholm castle Jakob Strömholm showed us around in Mariefred and pointed out all the ideas he had stopped. There is a strong commitment in the city. At one point Jakob wrote decision documents whether a tree's branches would be cut or not. The decisions are made for the sake of Gripsholm castle. The weightlessness of the building reflects the welcoming gesture. The structure is carried by the black frames in concrete and the release of 700mm from the ground clarifies the weightlessness. The release does also provide light to the hotel staff in the basement. On the ground floor there is a restaurant, hotel reception and a public scene. The plot’s new urban space offers a park and outdoor terrace connected to the restaurant. I would like to put a new chapter for the city - let the old be old and new become the new without destroying each other. As a gesture, I have divided the site and created two urban spaces. The building defines and introduces one room to the other. The openings in the structure offers a welcoming flow through and around the building.

Full textIn this project I have decided to work with a taller building in order to get a view towards the park, the Lake Mälaren, and to create a connection to the city castle. The building has many open spaces that enables room for art and socializing. In the hotel, with its combined exhibition hall, you are able to hold workshops or show exhibitions from the nearby graphic workshop and artist studio, Grafikens Hus. The main idea of the project is to take care of the cultural and artistic values of Mariefred, the history of the city and urban life, and combine these with commercial purposes. With studio workshops and an exhibition hall associated to the hotel - conditions are created to increase the attractiveness to the city. The hotel can through communication with visitors give attention to and visualize the cultural history of Mariefred, for example the 16th century Gripsholm castle, an important part of Sweden’s cultural heritage. The hotel will have a cultural function in the way the exhibition hall creates a meeting point/sight worth seeing for artists as well as visitors to the city. The relation to the city and the castle is an important part of the context since the Swedish royal court often acted as patron to the cultural values of the city. A silk factory was in the 18th century for example started after a letter by king Karl IX regarding introduction of tax exemptions. Architecture and art can in this project so to speak go hand in hand.

Full textThe idea of the project was to create a park anda hotel on the same plot. Throughout all of the project parts of the hote land its courtyard has been thought of as open to the public and to the inhabitants of Mariefred, not only residents of the hotel. This also alludes to the old-time town hotel which often had some public spaces, ballroom, or the like. The number of guests varies greatly between summer and winter, so I chose to design a house that varies in size with the seasons. In summer it is the biggest, with dorms and extra café, and a garden that serves as extra space for the café when necessary. In winter it is only the necessary functions that are open. The hotel then closes in a temperate and compact, inner volume. But even in winter you need a little greenery, thus, is a year round green house linked to the winter open part. In the greenhouse, one finds a lounge with a Mediterranean climate year round, which is growing among other fig trees and acacia.

Full textThe hotel and the public bath in Mariefred are located at the intersection of Storgatan and Gripsholmvägen. This is also the entrance to the town that is characterized by small wooden houses and a lot of brick buildings. The inspiration came from the brick structure and the circular shapes and arcuate shapes in the Gripsholm’s Castle, which is located south of Mariefred and it is the city´s most important landmark. The bath is an important concept for my project. It came after interviewing people from Mariefred who spoke very nostalgic about Strandrestaurangen - restaurant located on Mariefred’s east coast. It is a restaurant that closed due to mold, and had among other things cold bath. The new bath will be a part of the city in such a way that everyone should have access to its offerings. Both hotel guests and people living in Mariefred can come to swim there. Once again people will be able to gather in one place, enjoy, socialize, etc. The swimming pool has both a heated indoor part and a larger part that is located outdoors. You can reach the outdoor part of the pool by swimming through a glass wall or simply by walking from the outside. On the 2nd floor there is a pool, and it is only for hotel guests. The hotel's main entrance is separate from bath entrance. The hotel is on five floors and each floor has terraces that are stepping up and becoming smaller and smaller. The hotel's design is characterized by curved walls of gray brick and many glass walls / windows. The windows are narrow and high and have different distances depending on how the facade should be experienced. The building also follows the curvature of the main intersection in Mariefred.
Zgrada takođe prati krivinu glavnoj raskrsnici u Mariefredu.

Full textThe Hotel is designed to fit into the the Mariefredian city andit has certain elements and qualities that are commonly usedin the city. Elements like using a small scale, letting the buildingfollow the shape of the road, allowing a small and motleycourtyard to appear and also using the natural building materialwood. The facade is built from a standing panel and gableswith shingled facade. Something charcteristic for Mariefred isthe many green courtyards that unfortunatly are closed forthe general public. Accordingly the hotel - with it’s many courtyardsin various sheltered states - creates a green hub for thecity. The buildings towards the city are higher than the one towardthe park and also towards the old station house, this is to meetthe scale of each of them individually. The diffrent heights alsoallow for better view from many rooms. I have tried to keepMariefreds own spirit alive in this project and have tried to letthe motley feeling of the city into the hotels design and expression.

Full textSummary of project There is something perticular about a hotel. Life from a private/public perspective are mould together on a small area. In the city the hotel functions as a meating point between the local and world around. On our site in Mariefred, the interesting is the clash between the small but dense city core and the parks that surrounds the castle of Gripsholm where there´s a big flow of visitiors arriving by car, steamboat or locomotive. The site has a problem. The groundlevel is just above lake Mälarens sealevel and thereby it´s very sensitive to flooding during heavy rain and snow melting. Out of these conditions the hotel "Vått & Torrt" are rising. A building that has turned the problem into a posibilty and uses the water to create a more sustainable place that also gives something nice to our human senses. The hotel are shaped around a lower on the plot, which has it´s ground level below the sea in order to make the water sustain on the site.

Full textMariefred is a city full of history and character. Different visitors from all over the world come here to discover what there is to see. At the same time the everyday life goes on for the nearly 4,000 residents who live here permanently. In this project, these two sides of Mariefred formed the basis for the design of a hotel in a place right between the old town and the Gripsholm Castle. The city and the castle are in many ways opposites, just like the tourists and the inhabitants in Mariefred. The castle is a large, heavy and closed brick building. The city center rather consists of many different wooden buildings that together form an open and airy weave in which the scale is much smaller. The hotel forms a link both between people but also between these different building typologies. This creates something new in the cityscape that also has a strong connection to its surroundings. The hotel lobby is made up of a public vertical spiral that contributes to both overnight guests and outside visitors when they take part of the entire building togheter. This room is the heart of the hotel and along its way you will find all the hotel rooms in direct connection to the social areas. The vertical spiral begins outside the building. The beginning consists of a ramp that has different roles. It is both the hotel entrance, a place for playing and an area to stay and watch the trains enter Mariefred’s railway station.

Full textA hotel building in the town of Mariefred. Examines the room created in the gap between smaller heavier volumes, where hotel rooms and other private programs are placed. A hotel is located in one city but populated by people from another. You have probably never been to the hotel located where you live, but the number of hotels visited in other cities and countries are several. The typical swedish cityhotel from the early 20th century that served as a meeting place for locals is now difficult to find. In this project, main focus has been on the locals and towards Mariefred. Visitors will come here anyway? The house serves as a meeting place between people from Mariefred, but of course also for tourists and hotel guests. The hotel also acts as a link between the castle of Gripsholm and Mariefred city. Something between the big city and the small visitor. With the hotel's position as a portal to the city, it summarizes the town of brick, wood, large, small, people from Mariefred and tourists. S, M, L symbolizes thus the small, the great and the hotel in between.

Full textMARIEFRED Mariefred is a town well known for its architecture and history, it’s a well preserved town made of wooden houses and it is a popular place for tourist during the summer months. The Gripsholms castle is located in the south of Mariefred, and the castle is as well as the town itself popular amongst all the tourists visiting Mariefred. THE SITE The site of the hotel is located in the western part of the old town. The site offers a variety of different sights, depending on which direction you look at. In the south you can spot the Gripsholms castle, a little park just in front of the castle, and the lake Mälaren. If you turn to the east you see the old part of Mariefred. In the north- west is Munkhagsgärdet, an un-built field area that historically has been property of the Gripsholms castle. By the field lies an old church ruin from the 12th century. In the south-west lies the old railway that nowadays only is in use during the summer months. THE CONCEPT The observation hotel is a hotel that has five sides, each facing something typical and special for Mariefred; the castle, the south part of the old town, the north part of the old town, the old field, and the railway area. Also, the hotel rooms is a result of a study made in how a view can affect the shape and design of a room. The hotel becomes a way to experience parts of Mariefred in peace an quiet, and perhaps discover something that you haven’t seen walking around the town. THE DESIGN The hotel rooms are made as a result from a study in how rooms can be designed to fit the view. As a result of the study I continued working with three different room shapes, one rectangular shape with a window on one of the short sides, on rectangular shape with a window on one of the long sides, and one square shaped room with one or two windows on one of the sides. These different room types are represented in different sizes in the whole hotel. The rooms on the corners of the hotel has windows facing two views and creates more of a panorama view. On each floor one or more hotel rooms has been turned into a lounge area accessible for all of the hotel guests. The different views from these areas makes it possible for the guests to experience a variety of different views within the hotel.

Full textMariefred is a town where time has stood still, but where seasonal changes are major between the summer and winter. To create a building that hosts long term activities and is used throughout the year, and not only during the busiest tourist season, the building also includes an additional set of spaces for a library and community halls for the citizens of Mariefred, as well as the hotel and related restaurant. The concept for the interior spaces was created the inspiration from the town's most prominent building, Gripsholm Castle. The plan of the hotel derived from the investigation of the castles's multiple entrances and intricate movement patterns, that are partially intertwined, creating fluctuating relationships between the residents and in relation to the building itself, making every persons experience vary from the others. The separate hotel rooms are designed to stage a shift between a sense of overview and that of separated fragments, between contact with the outside world and total secludedness. Several smaller houses dwells within a larger one, gathering around a courtyard, to which all the activities - the hotel rooms, the restaurant, the library, the staff spaces - relates. The building creates a wall around the courtyard, a porous wall that gives way and gives room to the different activities inhibiting it. The feeling of transgressing a number of layers and filters as the visitor passes through the building makes the notion of this wall more palpable, as the visitor sometimes can discern the internal life and exterior shape of the building and other times is embraced by It's inner world.

Full textThe project aims att designing a hotel with 34 rooms on the outskirts of the small historic town of Mariefred, situated on the shores of Lake Mälaren. The hotel consists of a square volume with brick facade and a distinguished chamfered corner, the flat plot is next to the local railway museum. Ancient Gripsholm castle dominate the town, and the hotel's placing on the plot preserves important sight lines. The program includes key features such as hotel rooms, lobby and restaurant, and also a movie theater in the ground floor. The interior of the hotel is dominated by a staircase set on the diagonal, which creates an uninterrupted flow of natural light through the building and points your attention inward, upward from the main entrance. The main movement between floors is done here. There are also a whole other layer of the building, addressed to children. Children are given great space and a network of secret passages, covert connections, where they are to be invited to play and discover, far from controlling adult eyes. The passages are accessed directly from every room through ladders and small doors, and are visible in the facade through a string of small windows at different heights, which also provides facade decoration. In the hotel there is a variety of small nooks and secret rooms to find, hiding places to create a trip during the trip.

Full textMariefred, a charming small town just by the lake Mälaren with preserved wooden house buildings and a city plan from the late 1700s. This project started with the variation that exists among the buildings in the old town of wooden houses. With small differences in their expression, colouring, extensions and rebuilding a special character is created in Mariefred. With the project I wanted to combine that character and the sense of variation with the hotel to break the traditional hotel building with corridors and a general expression. A wooden building to connect to the city but with a more modern style then what is there today. The main way to create this variation was a shifting of the floor heights. The shift makes different heights in the rooms on the bottom floor and on the other floors the shift breaks the corridors between the hotel rooms and divide the rooms to different levels. Mariefred is given a hotel at the entrance of the city with space for the public through a restaurant, space for the staff and the activity and space for the guests by rooms with variation that gives the hotel environment and the stay in Mariefred more personality.

Full textABOUT ALL THE PROTECTING AND PRESERVING OF MARIEFRED Mariefred is a town that has been protected against changes for a long time. The city plan has not changed much since the 1700s and the town is now an idyllic place. All this protecting and preserving will also continue, with strong restrictions on what may be built or rebuilt. A document from Strängnäs municipality (where Mariefred is located) lists several areas that overlap and cover almost the entire city where decisions have been made for the preservation of Mariefred. The city-centre of Mariefred and the nearby Gripsholm Castle area are the most heavily regulated. In these areas “new construction class A” applies, which generally means something here can only be built or rebuilt if the addition serves the area’s purpose in some way and follow the area's appearance and character. Between these two highly protected areas is a smaller area - the train station area in Mariefred - were the site of the project’s hotel is. In this area “new construction class B” applies, which means fewer restrictions on any new construction’s purpose, but it must follow the area's structure, scale, appearance and materials. Besides these areas, there are five more, as well as a nature reserve where preserving and protection is going on too. In my project, I play with all of this preserving and protection, and set terms like permanent, long-term, unchanged, adjusted and static against terms as temporary, short-term, variable, unadjusted and dynamic. Could there perhaps be something temporary or something that changes over time among all that is to be protected and preserved as long as possible? This concept has then been combined with an idea of matching the number of rooms to the changing seasonal needs during winter versus summer (because Mariefred have more tourists in the summer months), as well as an idea of taking advantage of the nearby railway museum. The hotel consists of two parts: a permanent core and twelve temporary elements in the form of hotel room railway carts. The core follows the area's structure, scale and materials, while the carts do not. But how could it matter when they can just be rolled away if they interfere? Luften e fri! (the air is free)

Full textImagine a seed shaping its own little cavity in its closed sphere under earth. Here it´s lying waiting to sprout and finally get up and face the light… The hotel located in Mariefred is like its own little imaginative world that you are going to for a short while. Here you are staying in rooms that close and encapsulate. There is no real border between the walls floors and ceilings. It is as if you were in a rabbit hole or like a seed under earth. The concept is based on the idea of giving the hotel rooms and restaurant somewhat extraordinary. I give the hotel a greenhouse that provides locally cultivation of fruits and vegetables to the restaurant. By creating rooms that gives the hotel guest a feeling of being under earth I want to raise the awareness of the origin of all that is growing and we daily feed on. This gives the hotel guests a spatial experience beyond the ordinary, and that goes in line with the spirit of the greenhouse and the restaurant.

Full textDoes a place lose its identity when no one visits it? Can a place posses two completely different identities, one for summer and one for winter? I find that Mariefred is characterized by a form of ambiguity in its identity, where it can’t decide which direction to move forward in. Either it lives on in its past, where it’s continually adapting to the occasional visitor, or the city stops being a museum oriented society, where the dialog with the past has stagnated and instead chooses a path where its identity is no longer controlled by tourism. I think of Mariefred as a place that doesn’t have try to adapt to the idyllic touch as a mean to please the visitors, a place that dares to break away from Gripsholm Castle long-lasting grip and its dominant shade. In an attempt to identify the historical aspects, not for sentimental reasons or historical value, but as the inspiration and identity creating elements, should the added building contribute to the future by representing its own time and thus obtaining as much weight as the existing ones.

Full textJust at the outskirts of the traditional wooden town centre of Mariefred, the Hotel for Creativity is located. The location of the site in relation to the city, combined with the beautiful natural scenery, makes the site one of the most attractive places in the city. The Hotel for Creativity is equally a place for social interaction between locals as it is a refuge for artists. The playful wooden building houses two types of long term stay for people working with artistic creations, generous studio spaces, a public part with restaurant, bar and a roof terrace. The hotel attracts painters in need of studios, authors looking for peace and concentration as well as tourists who, during the summer, can appreciate exhibitions of the art produced at the hotel. The project examines the floor plan as a tool for creating an efficient and exciting disposition of rooms. The relative placement of house volumes, the spaces generated in between the buildings and the placement and design of communication areas are all examples of methods intending to create interesting and functional spaces.
