Abstract:
The economic development of a region, especially in the development of the tourism sector, cannot be separated from the development of its human resources. This study aims to see the employee recruitment system, employee performance, and employee education qualifications at hotels in the city of Parepare. 7 informants are leaders and/or employees who are taken from hotels who are deemed to be able to represent the whole hotel in Parepare City. This research is applied research with a qualitative approach. Data were analyzed descriptively. Observations were made at seven hotels as the object of research, one of which recruited employees openly, while the other six hotels did not. Of all employees in the seven hotels, only a small proportion have educational qualifications with a tourism background. There is one hotel that has employees with a tourism education background, but only at the level of vocational high school education, besides that employee performance is generally still low in almost all hotels, only one hotel which according to our observations is quite good in terms of hotel service standards. The results showed that the recruitment system has not been implemented openly, employee performance is still low and educational qualifications are not following the needs of the workforce in the hotel industry

Abstract:
Over the past decade, there has been a growth in the number of hotels built on university campuses, in Europe, Asia and the United States. Originally, such hotels were often associated with a university’s hotel school and their hospitality programme; however, an increasing number of full-service campus hotels have recently been developed, with no such connections. Through 30 interviews with Heriot-Watt University staff and students, this study explores their perceptions of a newly built commercial hotel on their campus. The findings highlighted the different opinions held by students and staff as to the benefits of a campus hotel and suggested that they were viewed by both as contested hospitality spaces. However, this study submits that if they were more welcoming to students and staff and were better aligned with the ethos of the university, this would aid in their acceptance into the wider university community.

Abstract:
Indonesian’s nature has a combination of a tropical climate and is the largest and most island nation in the world. Indonesia also has many natural tourism sites that are already well-known abroad. One of them is Lake Toba. Lake Toba is the largest and deepest lake in Southeast Asia. These tourist attractions are also supported by a cultural heritage that is rich with many tribes and customs that spread throughout Indonesia. Resort hotels are one of the supporting facilities in the tourist area. The design of the Tongging resort hotel raises the theme of neo vernacular. The problem posed was "How to design Resort Hotels using the neo-vernacular architectural approach?". Using the neo-vernacular school aims to arouse the culture and customs of the environment. Because we know the Tongging area is a Batak tribe area, which is a very thick tribe with traditions and customs. The resort hotel design Tongging is designed using ornamentation and formations, which are more directed to the Siwaluh Jabu traditional house by using qualitative methods because it is rational and planned precisely with the location of the site. Tongging resort hotel can be a resort hotel that does not leave the local culture and can become an icon in the hope that it can still preserve the existing customs or culture.

Abstract:
Offering services to clients by staff is a major feature of the hotel industry. Therefore, maintaining high-quality and stable services is critical for hotels to stay competitive. As for hotel human resource management, how to effectively increase employee retention is crucial because it not only enhances organizational performance but also reduces personnel cost. In this study, the researchers used structural equation modeling to explore the relationship between job embeddedness, organizational commitment, and intention to stay in tourist hotel interns. Furthermore, work–life balance was used as the moderating variable between organizational commitment and intention to stay. The study subjects were interns who had completed between half and one year of an internship at a tourist hotel and were going to graduate from the school upon completing the internship. The results indicated that job embeddedness has a significant and positive effect on organizational commitment and intention to stay whereas organizational commitment mediates the relationships between job embeddedness and intention to stay. In addition, work–life balance moderates interns’ intention to stay. This study provides the hotel industry with useful management guidelines for retaining employees and improving competitiveness.

Abstract:
The article deals with the challenges which Russian hotel-industry-specific higher education faces and which significantly undermine the education’s competitiveness in the educational service market in Europe and worldwide. The author identifies the key aspects of personnel training that the author sees as requiring a competition-driven revision. The research undertaken by the author has allowed him to formulate the possible solutions to the problem of low hotel resource potential. The implementation of the solutions is based on the creation of a competitive hotel-management-specific HE institution in Russia The author pays particular attention to such problems as insufficient emphasis on application, which become apparent given the employers’ readiness to provide traineeship programs for HE students; inadequate linguistic skills the students acquire in industry-specific HE institutions, which frustrates the purposes of training that is focused on communication with foreign guests; and, finally, the status value of the students of Russian HE institutions. In the author’s opinion, the problems can be solved through a creation of a new competitive HE institution which will provide high-quality linguistic training, will put emphasis on application, and will collaborate with top regional employers in terms of traineeship programs and recruitment on graduation. The whole educational process in such an institution is to be provided in English, be employer-hotel-based, and guarantee employment in the employer-hotels through a system of graduate-placement or a system of industry-commission. At the transition stage, the solutions can be implemented in the context of an existing industry-specific HE institution.

Abstract:
The article deals with the main issues recently faced by the hospitality industry, as well as suggestions for their elimination and minimization. The study has shown that the main issues include the large gap between the practical and theoretical aspects of the training process, in addition to the insufficient amount of practice during the whole course of studying in the field of “Hotel industry”, which makes it impossible to adequately prepare graduates for competition on the labor market in the area of hotel service. Other issues include the lack of language teaching in higher education institutions that specialize in training hospitality business professionals, which undermines the entire education system aimed at communication with foreign guests. In the article, the authors analyze the problems of Russian higher education related to training professionals for the hospitality industry. These problems lead to the loss of competitiveness on the European and global market of educational services. The authors identify the key elements in the training of specialists that require improvements to engage in competition. After the study in this field was conducted, the ways of solving the identified problems were proposed. The solutions involved the principles of creating a competitive school of hotel management in Russia as a factor in the development of the resource potential of hotels. As a result, the prestige of studying in such higher education institutions rises.

Abstract:
This study uses ethnographic portraits of hotel school managers to identify specific soft skills lacking in Cambodian hospitality students and to examine the complex obstacles that the managers face when providing soft skills education. In Cambodia, 30% of the population lives under the poverty line (“UNICEF Cambodia Statistics,” n.d.). Meanwhile, the service and hospitality sector has grown to represent 39% of the country’s real GDP share (“Growth in service sector brings more challenges,” n.d.), making it an attractive industry for young workers to find employment and improve livelihoods. However, the World Bank identifies that there is a gap in young Cambodian workers’ skills, especially soft skills (Brixi, Van Adams, D’Amico, & Krauss, 2012). The qualitative portraiture method is used in the study to lend a more detailed perspective on school challenges since the existing literature on the soft skills deficiency in Cambodia is largely quantitative in nature. For this portraiture study, managers from the Don Bosco Hotel School, the largest hotel school in Cambodia, were chosen as protagonists. The findings reveal that the main soft skills lacking in students are: responsibility, self-assessment, honesty, self-confidence, teamwork, and culture sensitization. The findings also show that major obstacles hotel school managers faced when educating students in soft skills are: high staff turnover, lack of role models, short duration of training programs, lack of nutrition, problems with students’ families, and a shortage of external exchange opportunities. By humanizing the dialogue beyond quantitative statistics, a richer and more meaningful ecosystem of information can emerge. With greater contextual understanding, stakeholders in both the non-profit and for-profit sectors can create more sustainable changes for Cambodian hospitality soft skills training.

West, Matt. "The feasibility of establishing a diversified hotel property fund on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/50491.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study explores the feasibility of establishing a diversified hotel property fund (DHPF) on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. To be launched in 2005/2006, the proposed unit trust fund is made up of a diversified portfolio of hotels located throughout South Africa. Research suggests that Hotel Property Funds have traditionally been the most volatile of Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) with their share value largely dependent on hotel revenue. However, investing in HPFs and REITs have numerous advantages such as their stipulated 90% dividend-payout ratio, steady stream of cash flow and zero corporate income taxes. The Property Unit Trust sector in South Africa in 2003 realised annualised rates of returns of 39%, and furthermore, the economic outlook and hotel industry sector show promising signs with economic growth rates for 2004 and 2005 reaching 4% and 5% respectively. This study thus considers whether a hotel property fund will succeed in South Africa and what returns investors can expect. By drawing on empirical and primary research and lessons learnt from international best practices this ground-breaking report identifies and analyses key performance variables of HPFs and REITs and applies them to a South African context. These variables include; capital structure, investment strategy, risk and return, Net Asset Value (NA V) and initial public offerings (IPO's). The report establishes that there is no optimal capital structure for REITs and only when the market reacts to the issuance of debt can one tell if the REIT is favourably structured or not. Concerning investment strategy, investors are in general, often lured to a diversified portfolio, however this report suggests that there is no optimal strategy for investing in REITs. In addition, over a medium to long term, REIT performance is strong, while over the short term performance is varied impacting on investor strategy. In assessing risk and return it was concluded that including REIT shares in an already diversified portfolio, the maximum expected return for each given level of risk is increased, and the level of risk for each level of expected return is reduced. Furthennore, the performance of RElTs is not necessarily detennined by size or Net Asset Value and thus small and large REITs can offer investors similar returns. Finally, initial-day returns for industry lnitial Public Offerings (lPO's) easily outperfonn REIT lPO's. Similarly to RElTs, there are numerous advantages to Hotel REITs which include, unlocking and redeployment of capital, investment spread and risk reduction and the provision of synergies between counter cyclical performing properties. However, empirical research indicates that Hotel REITs prove to be the most volatile of REIT sectors. Hotel REITs differ enonnously from their parent group in terms of their revenue & earnings which are more diverse in source and are generated from short-tenn leases. As such. Hotel REITs are also considered to be more management intensive. As with REITs there is no evidence to suggest an optimal capital structure and with the envisaged 50% debt ratio, the DHPF could be considered to be following international best practices. Several drawbacks with Hotel REITs include the lowest dividend yield among all RElT sectors, high volatility in income earnings, sensitivity to upswings and downturns in the tourism market, large capital investments and fixed operating expenses for staff and infrastructure. However despite these obstacles and in answer to the research problem, the prospects of the DHPF succeeding in South Africa are very high indeed. The REIT and Hotel REIT markets have proved successful throughout major capital markets, providing investors with a multitude of benefits. South Africa's economic and tourism climate is very favourable. The Property Unit Trust (PUT) sector has performed immensely well and investors can expect a healthy return which, as shown, is considerably higher than other investments. Finally, the fund is being spearheaded by a high calibre DHPF management team, which is key to the listing and management of the fund.
Hierdie veranderlikes sluit in: kapitaaistruktuur, beleggingsstrategie, risiko en terugkeer, Bruto Bate Waarde (Net Assest Value) (BBW) sowel as aanvanklike openbare aanbod (Initial Public Offering) (AOA).

The culture of hotel and restaurant work.

Dangerous for apprentices and students?

The study is based on a survey targeting 50 teachers at chef schools with good geographic distribution of 9 schools. Teachers answer questions on bullying and sexual harassment in the hotel and restaurant sector, and students practice shock in the meeting with the industry. Students face a hard and tough environment where it is expected that it will suffer a great deal of harassment and degrading treatment as part of a tradition. There seems to be a general but erroneous belief that the professional climate has improved. The study shows that this is not the case. The respondents replied that bullying is common in the industry, and 92% of vocational teachers indicated that students are affected by a practice shock. The study shows that the industry climate has to be tough, but it is stated at the same time be too tough. Schools management lacks understanding and insight into the unique professional culture that prevails.

For decades, the industry has been growing rapidly, but the sudden decreases in visitor growth has led to increased competition among hotels. To attract more international guests, hoteliers have started to manage their online reputations by responding to online reviews. In this study, we analyzed online customer reviews and the responses of 31 hotels. A clear trend was observed: hotels are putting more resources into online management responses. We also interviewed ten hotels to learn how they manage these responses, what challenges they face in responding to online customer reviews, and how they use online reviews for other management purposes. We found that most hotels in the case study manage customer responses reactively rather than proactively; they lack strategic goals and methods for evaluating ROI. We also found that executive involvement and the hotel's internal communication style affect how customer responses can be used as a tool to improve the service-recovery process. Using online customer as a source of employee performance evaluation and linking customer feedback to encouragement scheme are also found in some hotels' practice. Future studies should further investigate how hotels' internal communication styles and response strategies and behavior affect service-recovery and customer loyalty. The use of online customer reviews to help improve other aspects of management such as human resource management is also suggested to be studied.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 78-83.
The application of systemic principles to a consultancy model was explored, using the systemic problem-solving methodologies developed in Britain by Burden (1978, 1981, 1983) and Checkland (1981). It is argued that, in addition to the traditional role of the educational psychologist as a child and family psychologist, the role of the educational psychologist should be extended to include a function as a consultant to social systems. The focus of the intervention was the children in the junior-primary section of a boarding-school. A team of consultants was formed for the duration of the intervention. The team comprised of key members from the system and the novice educational psychologist, with the academic supervisor acting as an outside consultant. The analysis focused on rules and patterns. Patterns of communication, support, isolation and problem-solving were highlighted. The intervention focused on structural changes. Structural changes, attitudinal changes and the process itself were evaluated. Agreement by consensus was used as a measure of change. Consensus was reached that the model had impacted positively on the problem-solving skills of the team and the previous isolation of team members. However limited news of difference was found in relation to the children. This was connected to the fact that many of the changes had not been implemented fully or for a sufficient period of time.

Abstract:
Thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree: Master in Technology: Tourism and Hospitality Management In the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relevance of the curriculum offered by universities of technology hotel schools in South Africa, in preparing students to be able to open and operate commercial restaurants successfully after graduation. Data for this research were obtained making use of qualitative and quantitative research. The researcher conducted interviews with restaurateurs throughout South Africa to determine what skills and knowledge would be required to ensure that students who graduated with their National Diploma in Hospitality Management: Food and Beverage (NDHM: FB), would be able to open and operate a sustainable and profitable commercial restaurant. The information obtained from these interviews was used to draw up a questionnaire, completed by third year students who hoped to graduate at the end of the year, sampled from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology Hotel School (known as the Cape Town Hotel School) and the Central University of Technology Hotel School. The questionnaire was designed to measure the students’ perceptions of their competencies in various areas i.e. of their skills and knowledge to open and run a successful commercial restaurant. The results revealed that, in general, the third year students did consider themselves to have the necessary skills and knowledge. The researcher recommends that hotel schools at Universities of Technology introduce more entrepreneurship and incubation programmes to provide more opportunities for graduates to open their own restaurants.

Abstract:
Combined Cooling Heat and Power (CCHP) attained significant attention among energy professionals and academicians recently due to its superior thermal, economic and environmental benefit in comparison with conventional energy producing systems (internal combustion engine (ICE), micro-turbine, etc). Despite the abundance of literature on CCHP, only a few studies emphasized on the selection of appropriate prime mover for an economically sustainable CCHP system. Furthermore, the effect of part load efficiencies is commonly neglected during CCHP analysis. We had introduced these two new concepts of economic sustainability of specific prime mover and part load effects on efficiency to CCHP system in our previous paper. An algorithm based on hybrid load following method was utilized to determine the optimum prime mover for a particular location and weather type. No studies explored the effects of efficiency parameters and the selection strategies of prime mover in different building types for any particular location using this newly developed algorithm. Since building types dominates the electric, heating and cooling demand extensively, it is imperative to extend the prime mover selection analysis for building types for efficient CCHP operation. Economic, energy, and emission performance criteria have been utilized for the prime mover selection systems in different building types. Computer simulations were conducted for five different building categories (primary school, restaurant, small hotel, outpatient clinic and small office buildings) for each of three different types of prime movers (reciprocating internal combustion engine (ICE), micro-turbine and phosphoric acid fuel cell) in a cold climate zone (Minneapolis, MN). The simulation results of different prime movers were compared with the outcomes of a reference case (for each building in the same climate zone) that has a typical separate heating and power system. The cold climate zone (Minneapolis, MN) helped to explore the heating load effects on economic, energy, and emission performance of the buildings in comparison to other energy demands (i.e. electric and cooling demand). A hybrid load following method was executed, using improvements shown in our previous article. Performance parameters and other outcomes of this study showed that economic savings were observed for the ICE in all building types, and the micro-turbine in some building types. Internal rate of returns of ICE are 22.4%, 14.7%, 20.5%, 14.6% and 6.5% for primary school, restaurant, small hotel, outpatient clinic and small office respectively. ICE also shows highest energy savings among all three prime movers with an energy savings of 20%, 17.2%, 25.7%, 23.8% and 9.7% for primary school, restaurant, small hotel, outpatient clinic and small office respectively. For all types of prime mover based CCHP systems, lower CO2 emission was observed for all building types. However, unlike ICE, which is preferable in terms of economic and energy savings, emission analysis shows that micro-turbine poses better emission characteristics compared to other types of prime movers. CO2 emission for micro-turbine savings are 67.1%, 62.2%, 82%, 43.2% and 81.4% for primary school, restaurant, small hotel, outpatient clinic and small office respectively. The relationship between the power and thermal demand of the different buildings was determined to be a significant factor in CCHP system performance. A sensitivity analysis determining the effects of heat exchanger and heating coil efficiencies on the performance of CCHP systems shows that the economic performance was most sensitive to the heat exchanger efficiency, while energy consumption and emissions was most sensitive to the heating coil and boiler efficiency.

Abstract:
Public buildings include office building, schools, hotels, hospitals, retails and others. This paper selects two types of existing public buildings — office and hotel to conduct research. It firstly introduces and analyzes the feasible energy saving retrofitting strategies and technologies for existing public buildings in Shanghai, mainly about building envelope, HVAC system and lighting system. Then it builds up prototypical models, with whole building energy analysis software—EnergyPlus, for office and hotel respectively to simulate and calculate the annual energy saving and payback period of the various strategies. Therefore the different features of the two types of buildings and the energy saving effects of various strategies used on them are studied. The results show that the energy saved by each one strategy may be different for different types of existing buildings. For office buildings, such ECMs (energy conservation measures) as external shading, energy efficient lighting system, daylighting in perimeter area and variable pumps have short payback period. While for hotels, external shading, variable pumps and temperature reset have short payback period.

Abstract:
The Covid-19 pandemic has brought many areas of life to a halt, from basic service areas such as education and health to social and cultural life and it caused people to isolate themselves from the outside world and to be locked in their homes for more than a year. In the dynamism of modern life, the houses used like hotels have become spaces such as workplaces, schools, sports halls and also isolation for individuals with infections in addition to the usual needs. Unfortunately, modern houses designed for certain basic needs of nuclear families have been insufficient to meet all these needs in pandemic conditions that suddenly emerged unexpectedly. However, traditional houses, with their spaces that allow different functions and flexible plan layouts, contain many design phenomena that are needed today. In this study, traditional Anatolian residential architecture will be examined in terms of plan solutions and spatial features, and inferences and evaluations will be made for the flexibility phenomenon and transformable spaces required by modern housing.
