As a result, several new building standards have emerged including the Passive House Standard, a rigorous energy-use standard based on a super-insulated and very tightly sealed building envelope. Survey in the Puuc region, Yucatán, has revealed considerable evidence for small-scale quarrying and lime burning for construction purposes, as well as a high incidence of masonry architecture. In this chapter we discuss what must have been a substantial component of the Puuc Terminal Classic economy, especially if the construction of palaces and civic-ceremonial structures is included. This chapter addresses the stages involved in the procurement of building materials for housing and subsequent construction processes, especially of masonry structures. We then assess how construction may have been managed and its economic implications, suggesting that elite houses may have been tokens within a royal patronage network in which the size and elaboration of dwellings were subject to sumptuary considerations.

Bayana is exceptional in the rare survival of 15th century dwellings, abandoned but still standing in the Fort after the 1505 earthquake. They provide insights into structure and methods of construction as well as a typology, from single-room dwellings to courtyard plan houses and those with an open-fronted hall (īwān) and flanking chambers, featuring standardized, apparently mass-produced, stone elements which could include Qur’anic inscriptions. The division of space from public to private is discussed, and the role of private gardens providing seclusion. The survey enables identification of secular and religious structures, and shows the similarity between the plot layout of the ruined domestic dwellings in Tughluqābād, as well as of the later surviving mansions of Chanderi, and their antecedents in the planning of palaces and houses in Central Iran. The continuation of the house form in Sufi khānaqāhs, distinguishing them from orthodox religious structures is highlighted, and comparisons made with the 17th century merchants’ houses in the Armenian quarter of Isfahan.

Housing occupies about 70 percent of the land area of a typical city. That land area is not randomly distributed, but instead follows regular spatial patterns; these patterns are sectorial and radial (see Hoyt 1939; chapter 2). These geographic patterns form housing submarkets. Specific demographic groups are attracted to housing in those submarkets. As there are many kinds of demographic characteristics of households, there are also many types of housing, and many housing submarkets. Housing submarkets include downtowns, middle-burbs, suburbs; high income; middle income, and low income; new development, mixed use, older development, and mixed new infill with older development; apartments, condominiums; townhouses, high rises, and single-family dwellings. The market analyst makes recommendations on which type of development will be most successful in which submarket and on which submarket would be appropriate for a particular type of development (see Sumichrast and Seldin 1977). Few people today choose to live without the benefit of some type of housing. The choice and availability of what type of housing to live in depends on a complex interaction of many factors, including culture, the natural and built environment, technological scale of society, government, income, stage of life cycle, economics of building construction, and knowledge and imagination of those building the housing. This chapter presents a broad overview of housing market analysis. In the overview, the determinants to demand and supply of housing are presented (See also Harvey, 1992). There is a broad overview of forecasting procedures and methodologies, the methods for projecting absorption rate, housing demand, and competitive supply, and how sales prices and rental prices might be determined. In the last quarter of the nineteenth century, upper-middle-income urban households in the United States and Canada often lived in what are today commonly referred to as Victorian houses. These houses were designed for multigenerational living, including grandparents as the head of household, their children, and their grandchildren. Aunts, uncles, and cousins might have lived in the same dwelling. All the family subunits contributed to the finances of maintaining the house. This provided social security to the elder members of the household, and inexpensive yet high-quality living conditions for the other family members.

As the human population of our planet rises to hitherto unprecedented levels, we find ourselves wondering whether the half-century from 1990 to 2040 might be remembered not so much as the age when the oil ran out, as the age of construction. Never before have we built so many dwellings, roads, dams, and civic structures than will be constructed during the span of this half-century. A little reflection suggests that in our (allegedly) highly evolved society, with our sophisticated knowledge of the forces of nature and the strengths of materials, we would be stupid to commit the unforgivable sin of knowingly constructing buildings that will crush and maim our descendants. Yet in many parts of the world this is indeed what we are doing. Homo sapiens decided long ago to live in houses. Other animals do it, but rarely do they build such precarious structures as do humans. The nests of birds are woven to be resilient, mammals and reptiles live in caves selected for their permanence, burrows are dug by animals content with the knowledge that a little more burrowing is all that’s needed to keep the walls in place, or the driveway clear. Only humans spend at least eight hours of every turn of the planet within a dwelling assembled from a variety of materials that are often close to the point of structural failure, and often without considering the consequences of constructing permanent dwellings in regions subject to geologically extreme events. The shift from Homo the hunter-gatherer to Homo urbanensis means that many of the remaining 16 hours of each day are spent in another structure, more often than not also assembled with an eye on thrift —maximum volume for minimum cost. Even the journey to and from these different structures can expose humans to seismic risks—as is evident from the collapse of bridges and overpasses in recent earthquakes. The damage done by an earthquake is caused by shaking, either directly or indirectly (via landslides, etc.). Shaking involves accelerations: the rate at which speed changes or, in qualitative terms, what can be thought of as “jerkiness.”

At the French site of Aillevans, not far from the border with Switzerland, there is a group of megalithic tombs (Pétrequin and Pinigre 1976). At first sight, these monuments conform to a wider tradition which is best represented at Sion on the Swiss side of the frontier, and at Aosta in Italy. In each case they feature massive stone cists associated with unburnt human bones (Mezzena 1998). These structures were sometimes located at one end of a low rubble platform or cairn, which could be either triangular or trapezoidal in plan. At Aosta and Sion they incorporated the remains of a series of anthropomorphic sculptures and, for that reason, the excavated evidence has played an important role in studies of statue menhirs. Dolmen 1 at Aillevans is equally remarkable but, in this case, the results of excavation have not attracted the attention they deserve (Pétrequin and Pinigre 1976: 325–49; Figure 25). In its original form, this structure consisted of a round mound six metres in diameter with a stone chamber and an antechamber. Again, it was associated with a quantity of disarticulated human bones. In a subsequent phase that construction was encased within a much larger trapezoidal cairn, seventeen metres in length. Although the circular monument was no longer a freestanding element, both its chamber and antechamber were retained. This was one of the latest megaliths in Europe, but sequences of this kind can be recognized at older tombs distributed across a much larger area. In its final phase, Dolmen 1 changed its character again. The chambered tomb was enclosed within a large wooden structure which had a similar outline to the cairn. The excavators concluded that it had been a roofed building. The stone chamber was located inside its eastern end, but the antechamber was left uncovered and acted as a kind of porch. Seen from a distance, the monument might have looked like a domestic dwelling. Indeed, Pétrequin and Pinigre (1976) specifically compare it with the well preserved buildings in the waterlogged Late Neolithic settlement at Clairvaux. According to their account, a megalithic tomb at Aillevans was almost completely concealed inside what appeared to be a house.

Abstract:
The starting point for this chapter is a work by the German artist Joseph Beuys. ‘7000 oaks’ is an installation which he inaugurated at Kassel, a city that had been damaged during the Second World War (Scholz 1986). Each tree was paired with a basalt stele which was quarried locally. In Beuys’s conception, the installation would change its character over time. For the first few years the standing stones would be the dominant feature, but they would become less conspicuous as the oaks grew to maturity. After that, there might be two very different outcomes. Either new trees would be planted as the old ones died— that was the artist’s plan—or a setting of monoliths would be all that remained with the stones themselves marking the positions of oaks that had disappeared. Beuys was concerned with regeneration in a way that was entirely appropriate in a war-damaged city where the oak trees would gradually replace a setting of rocks. His work was informed by his interest in ecology and played on a contrast between wood and stone which is equally relevant to archaeology. They are very different materials from one another, but both were used in prehistoric structures and employed in distinctive ways. Wood is an organic substance and eventually decays. Stone, on the other hand, is inorganic and for that reason it lasts a long time. The distinction is important in considering ancient architecture (Parker Pearson and Ramilsonina 1998). Of course, there were places in which only one of these materials was available, but there were others where the distinctive ways in which stone and wood were used are especially informative. Two examples illustrate the point. Neolithic houses in Northern Europe were timber constructions, but most of the tombs that accompanied them were made of local stone. In this case, the choice of building material suggests that these dwellings were thought to have a finite lifespan, whilst the tombs of their occupants would have a longer history. Similarly, the Neolithic longhouse at La Haute Mée in north-west France was built of wood but was accompanied by a granite menhir (Cassen et al. 1998).
