Abstract:
Housekeeping genes are ubiquitously expressed and maintain basic cellular functions across tissue/cell type conditions. The present study aimed to develop a set of pig housekeeping genes and compare the structure, evolution and function of housekeeping genes in the human–pig lineage. By using RNA sequencing data, we identified 3,136 pig housekeeping genes. Compared with human housekeeping genes, we found that pig housekeeping genes were longer and subjected to slightly weaker purifying selection pressure and faster neutral evolution. Common housekeeping genes, shared by the two species, achieve stronger purifying selection than species-specific genes. However, pig- and human-specific housekeeping genes have similar functions. Some species-specific housekeeping genes have evolved independently to form similar protein active sites or structure, such as the classical catalytic serine–histidine–aspartate triad, implying that they have converged for maintaining the basic cellular function, which allows them to adapt to the environment. Human and pig housekeeping genes have varied structures and gene lists, but they have converged to maintain basic cellular functions essential for the existence of a cell, regardless of its specific role in the species. The results of our study shed light on the evolutionary dynamics of housekeeping genes.

Abstract:
This study aims to elucidate the influence of sharing organizational housekeeping provided by adult children to their parents on sharing financial housekeeping, and to examine how this relationship theoretically and empirically varies with parental assets. Financial housekeeping sharing refers to the partial or complete use of household income by members together, while organizational housekeeping sharing can be defined as sharing food, having meals together, and sharing living spaces. To derive hypotheses, this study developed theoretical models on financial and organizational housekeeping sharing and their relationship with maximizing utility in households with children. Analysis was conducted using data from the 7th (2018) and 8th (2020) waves of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, as assets increase, sharing financial housekeeping decreases. Second, when organizational housekeeping support reaches a certain level, an increase in such share leads to a decrease in sharing financial housekeeping. Third, higher parental assets result in a diminishing negative influence of amount of sharing organizational housekeeping on that of sharing financial housekeeping. The analysis results suggest that as adult children provide more non-monetary resources to parents, the amount of financial resources they provide decreases. However, when parents have substantial assets, there seems to be little substitution effect between organizational housekeeping sharing and financial househousekeeping sharing. Based on the empirical analysis results, this study suggests the need to expand the criteria for recognizing parental support in income redistribution policies to include cases where households, despite not cohabiting, share financial and organizational housekeeping and jointly manage their livelihoods.

Abstract:
Christensen, Henrik, Peter Kuhnert, John Elmerdahl Olsen, and Magne Bisgaard. "Comparative phylogenies of the housekeeping genes atpD, infB and rpoB and the 16S rRNA gene within the Pasteurellaceae." International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology 54, no. 5 (September 1, 2004): 1601–9. http://dx.doi.org/10.1099/ijs.0.03018-0.

Abstract:
Phylogenies of housekeeping gene and 16S rRNA gene sequences were compared to improve the classification of the bacterial family Pasteurellaceae and knowledge of the evolutionary relationships of its members. Deduced partial protein sequences of the housekeeping genes atpD, infB and rpoB were compared in 28, 36 and 28 representative taxa of the Pasteurellaceae, respectively. The monophyly of representatives of the genus Gallibacterium was recognized by analysis of all housekeeping genes, while members of Mannheimia, Actinobacillus sensu stricto and the core group of Pasteurella sensu stricto formed monophyletic groups with two out of three housekeeping genes. Representatives of Mannheimia, Actinobacillus sensu stricto, [Haemophilus] ducreyi and [Pasteurella] trehalosi formed a monophyletic unit by analysis of all three housekeeping genes, which was in contrast to the 16S rRNA gene-derived phylogeny, where these taxa occurred at separate positions in the phylogenetic tree. Representatives of the Rodent, Avian and Aphrophilus–Haemophilus 16S rRNA gene groups were weakly supported by phylogenetic analysis of housekeeping genes. Phylogenies derived by comparison of the housekeeping genes diverged significantly from the 16S rRNA gene-derived phylogeny as evaluated by the likelihood ratio test. A low degree of congruence was also observed between the individual housekeeping gene-derived phylogenies. Estimates on speciation derived from 16S rRNA and housekeeping gene sequence comparisons resulted in quite different evolutionary scenarios for members of the Pasteurellaceae. The phylogeny based on the housekeeping genes supported observed host associations between Mannheimia, Actinobacillus sensu stricto and [Pasteurella] trehalosi and animals with paired hooves.

Abstract:
Housekeeping gene is a gene expressed with a fixed level and in abundant amounts under various conditions. After validation, the housekeeping gene can be used as an internal control to normalize gene expression data. This study reports the isolation of several housekeeping genes in Durik-durik plant (Syzygium sp). This plant material in form of fresh leaves from Durik-durik plants are taken from Kajuik Lake, Riau Province. The next stage is total DNA isolation, polymerase chain reaction, electrophoresis, sequencing and data analysis using bioinformatic tools. The isolated housekeeping genes included 18S rRNA, actin, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), Beta-tubulin and Ubiquitin with sizes of 400 bp, 679 bp, 1134 bp, 836 bp, 1167 bp and 2155 bp, respectively. In addition to 18S rRNA, the five housekeeping genes are the first reported from the genus Syzygium and referable to isolate housekeeping genes in other species in this genus. The six housekeeping genes can be used as internal controls on Durik-durik plants after validation.

Abstract:
The concept of “housekeeping gene” has been used for four decades but remains loosely defined. Housekeeping genes are commonly described as “essential for cellular existence regardless of their specific function in the tissue or organism”, and “stably expressed irrespective of tissue type, developmental stage, cell cycle state, or external signal”. However, experimental support for the tenet that gene essentiality is linked to stable expression across cell types, conditions, and organisms has been limited. Here we use genome-scale functional genomic screens together with bulk and single-cell sequencing technologies to test this link and optimize a quantitative and experimentally validated definition of housekeeping gene. Using the optimized definition, we identify, characterize, and provide as resources, housekeeping gene lists extracted from several human datasets, and 10 other animal species that include primates, chicken, and C. elegans. We find that stably expressed genes are not necessarily essential, and that the individual genes that are essential and stably expressed can considerably differ across organisms; yet the pathways enriched among these genes are conserved. Further, the level of conservation of housekeeping genes across the analyzed organisms captures their taxonomic groups, showing evolutionary relevance for our definition. Therefore, we present a quantitative and experimentally supported definition of housekeeping genes that can contribute to better understanding of their unique biological and evolutionary characteristics.

Abstract:
On academic housekeeping and its allocationAcademic housekeeping denotes the type of work tasks within university departments that are low-status, time-consuming, largely invisible, and that nevertheless need to be done. This article discusses academic housekeeping in a Swedish context, and holds that this topic has been overlooked in research. The aim is therefore to specify the meaning of the concept, to describe the gendered aspects of how academic housekeeping tasks are distributed, and to discuss possible explanations for the identified pattern. Through a close reading of current scholarship, the article finds that women carry out a disproportionate share of academic housekeeping tasks. This pattern is attributable to a complex set of factors, among them ”publish or perish”-related competitive academic culture, researcher ideals, and gender norms. The main argument of the article is that unbalanced academic housekeeping allocation may partially account for women’s difficulties in advancing within academia, and therefore need to be taken seriously in research as well as in academic leadership.
