Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to report our experience with free functional muscle transfer procedures for the late sequelae of the rare condition of congenital Volkmann’s ischaemic contracture of the forearm. Four children, with an average age of 9.5 years (range 1.5–17), were treated and were followed for a mean of 6 years (range 1–14). Two patients had dorsal forearm contractures, and two had both flexor and extensor forearm contractures. We carried out free functional muscle transfers to replace the flexor or extensor muscles. The functional result was assessed according to the classification system of Hovius and Ultee. All patients had wrist contractures and skeletal involvement with limb length discrepancy that influenced the outcome. All five transferred muscles survived and improved the function of the hand in three of the four patients. Level of evidence: 4

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 201-215.<br>This thesis is an intended contribution to the store of historical knowledge on Cape Town. Its title 'Miserable Hovels and Shanties on Waterlogged Wasteland'; political economy of peri-urban squatting in Cape Town, 1945 - 1960, has been decided on the basis of the following facts: (iv) l(i) Very little has been written on this subject especially during the period I have chosen. As a result, a lacuna exists in our understanding of 20th century Cape Town. So this thesis is an effort whose significance and value is that it seeks to provide an account of peri-urban squatting within the framework of political economy. By so doing a wide variety of factors, essential enough to have coloured the epoch, are captured and weaved together. (ii) Most historical works have not adequately examined the economic issues which underpin the phenomenon of peri-urban squatting. They have focussed more, instead, on the political aspect, emphasising the unequal distribution of political power between races. Here in this thesis I have attempted to strike a balance between the two factors (political and economic factors), hence I adopted the concept of political economy. To highlight the economic aspect I have used statistical data, (which I do not claim is entirely accurate) to show the wage, levels between races and also expose the pervasive state of underemployment of most Black people, whilst at the same time showing the political aspect through an examination of government legislations.

Abstract:
This study focuses primarily on social sustainability, which is a large and comprehensive concept. In today's urban planning, social sustainability is used on a broader perspective. The study aims to focus more on the concept for individual multifunctional buildings by gathering knowledge about the subject and highlight the meaning. The chosen multifunctional buildings are Icon in Växjö and Spektrum in Gothenburg. The purpose of this study is, through research and evaluation, to concretize people's daily needs and how they can be met in a multifunctional building and its contribution to a socially sustainable neighbourhood. The goal is to get a better understanding of which impact the multifunctional building has on its block. The goal is also designing and application of a tool developed in the context of the current study and to use this tool to evaluate the building's social sustainability based on people's everyday lives, needs and interests. Interviews with responsible project managers, architects, supervisors and other experts, together with the gathering of scientific reports, study visits, questionnaires and observations, has been the studies central approach. Working towards a more mixed urban environment and buildings that have different operation that are combined is nowadays increasingly common for a livelier and more enjoyable urban space. Based on the study´s designed tool, each multifunctional building has received different social points that depends on size, operations, availability and multifunctionality. The study shows that each multifunctional building has added value to its area.

Abstract:
The forms of American creationism can be distinguished by asking what amount of secular scientific knowledge they can include or tolerate within their respective systems. Kent Hovind, a representative of Young Earth Creationism, attempts in his Hovind Theory to account for astronomical, geological, and biological findings on the basis of a biblical and literalist world view. This attempt, like American creationism in general, can be viewed as a form of rationalization and secularization of religious convictions.

Abstract:
This paper addresses the topic of utilizing design to tackle segregation and social exclusion issue in the modern society. The aim of this paper is to define the existing problems and needs in the ongoing project “New Hovås”, from a social and interior design perspective. Afterwards, conceptual solutions that target the mentioned issues by taking into consideration the current social situation of Sweden will be presented, with a basis kept on a new urban area in Hovås, Gothenburg. By using the method of observation and studying several examples, relevant data was collected and analysed. During the process, a lack of consideration regarding social integration in the ongoing project was defined. Therefore, the ideas presented in the paper are to increase the awareness for social integration, by implementing in a new reading centre interior that would allow people to interact with each other without boundaries and participate in the social integration process. The library would implement best design practice in order to make the space more open and encouraging for social interactions. However, due to the complexity and the fact that the problem of segregation has multiple dimensions, it is disclaimed that this project implementation would tackle the issue holistically.

Sibley, Pamela Jean. "Ethos and answerability in the novelized epic: passional readings of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Aurora Leigh, David Jones's In Parenthesis, and Chenjerai Hove's Bones." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/ETD-TAMU-3165.

Full text
Abstract:
This study proposes an approach to a solution for the problem of the perceived ‚separatedness‛ of language from reality which employs the rhetorical concept of ethos, the doctrinal concept of the Chalcedonian definition of the nature of the incarnated Christ, and Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion of ‚answerability.‛ As an alternative to theories of reading and interpretation based on the arbitrariness of linguistic meaning, radical skepticism, and the death of the author, the approach defined in this study emphasizes affirmation of the centrality of the human person and the necessity of close, loving attention as the grounds of both aesthetic vision and ethical action. Developing three exemplary readings of novelized epics including Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Aurora Leigh, David Jones’s In Parenthesis, and Chenjerai Hove’s Bones, the study demonstrates how loving, careful attention to ethos—the definition of which is expanded to include relationships between language and character in literary works, genres, characters, authors, and teachers—is the prerequisite for answerability in literary relationships. Whether one is primarily interested in authors, characters, genres, canon, readers, or critical reception, attention to ethos illuminates the ways in which responses to literary works are conditioned by and analogous to responses to persons. The complex and irreducible relationships between the ‚word‛ and the ‚person‛ require an individual answerability for which there is no alibi. Ultimately, the ‚word‛ and the ‚world‛ are united in the answerable person, whether that person is an author, a character, a reader, a critic or a teacher.

In ASME 2017 Dynamic Systems and Control Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/dscc2017-5210.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper focuses on modeling and nonlinear control of in-ground-effect (IGE) on multi-rotor aerial vehicles such as quadrotor helicopters (quadcopters). As the vehicle flies and hovers near obstacles such as the ground, walls, and other features, the IGE which is a function of the distance between the rotor and the obstacle induces a thrust that drastically affects flight behavior. This effect on each rotor can be vastly different as the vehicle’s attitude varies. Furthermore, IGE limits the ability for precision flight control, navigation, and landing in tight and confined spaces. A nonlinear model is proposed to predict the IGE for each rotor. To compensate for the IGE, an adaptive nonlinear disturbance observer (ANDO) is designed to enhance closed-loop PID control. The observer and controller are implemented in a simulation framework, where results show significant improvement in performance compared to the case without observing and compensating for the IGE. In particular, it is shown that the ANDO PID closed-loop controller improves the settling time by approximately 60%.

Abstract:
To meet the needs of scientific discoveries in hadal zones, the hadal science and technology center (HAST) of Shanghai Ocean University has made a significant commitment to construct a movable laboratory for hadal trenches in 2013, which includes a mothership, an full ocean depth (FOD) human occupied vehicle (HOV), an FOD Autonomous and Remotely-operated Vehicle (ARV) and several FOD landers. Presently, the HOV is in concept design phase. Current HOVs in service could only work below 7,000m. To increase the submergence depth from 7,000m to 11,000m for a FOD HOV, the time spending in descent and accent will take a majority part of power endurance and leave little time in scientific studies. Hence, the descent/ascent motion analysis and optimization will play a bigger role in FOD HOV designs contrasting to current HOVs. In this paper, in order to investigate resistance characteristics and drag coefficients in decent and ascent directions of the FOD HOV, the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations were solved using computational fluid dynamics. To achieve a faster descent and ascent process, diving and floating with various attacking angles were tried. The numerical analysis for each scenario has been conducted and results were discussed. The method and theory presented in the paper will be applied to the design of a practical deep manned submersible.

In ASME 2018 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. Abstract:
An autonomous driving control system that incorporates notions from human-like social driving could facilitate an efficient integration of hybrid traffic where fully autonomous vehicles (AVs) and human operated vehicles (HOVs) are expected to coexist. This paper aims to develop such an autonomous vehicle control model using the social-force concepts, which was originally formulated for modeling the motion of pedestrians in crowds. In this paper, the social force concept is adapted to vehicular traffic where constituent navigation forces are defined as a target force, object forces, and lane forces. Then, nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) scheme is formulated to mimic the predictive planning behavior of social human drivers where they are considered to optimize the total social force they perceive. The performance of the proposed social force-based autonomous driving control scheme is demonstrated via simulations of an ego-vehicle in multi-lane road scenarios. From adaptive cruise control (ACC) to smooth lane-changing behaviors, the proposed model provided a flexible yet efficient driving control enabling a safe navigation in various situations while maintaining reasonable vehicle dynamics.
