Full textIn Italy as abroad, the Twenties saw the establishment of new technological devices for the production and vision of amateur films. Analysing ten Italian collections of private films and home movies, made by cine-amateurs between 1926 and 1942, my research examines both the linguistic codes of representation and the social practise of realisation and reception of these films. In particular, it addresses amateur cinematography as a cultural practise of conservation of private memory. Following both a theoretical and semiotic approach, I use the concept of filmic memory as THE intersection for this new historiography. In this sense, I am establishing a new field of cinematic research, whilst offering a theoretical reflection upon the inscription of the intimate and familiar memory into film.

Throughout the 1990s and into the twenty-first century, American society sought to record the stories of World War II veterans before they passed on. The United States Congress established the Veterans History Project in 2000 in order to collect stories not only from World War II veterans, but also from veterans of all wars. Although many similar programs existed before this one, this initiative stimulated the interest of communities all over the country to conduct oral history projects of their own. As a result, the availability of veterans’ accounts improved for scholars as well as for the general public. Along with veterans’ interviews, many collections include donated letters, diaries, and memoirs. Many of these institutions have posted their materials on the internet, thus giving easier public access to the sources. The increased availability of veterans’ accounts has shifted the question from, “What was the World War II veterans’ experience?” to “How do the veterans reflect on their experience?” This study analyzes the memories of World War II veterans who have documented their experiences at two separate times in their lives. It examines wartime letters and diaries written by soldiers as well as, oral histories conducted after the war. This study compares three veterans’ memories over time and the influence of collective memory on their remembrances. This case study finds that although these three veterans had very different experiences, they all reflected on their experience in similar ways. The veterans’ immediate accounts were straightforward and without introspection, while their later accounts included interpretation and analysis of their experiences. Although the details in each narrative are unique to the veteran, the overall tone and meaning of the memory constructed in their oral histories followed the meaning presented in the American collective memory of the war.

Full textIn the context of a globalized and postmodern world, there is a vector of thought in Mexican culture that remains fixated on the present, invested in the urgency of the moment, and content with hurried decisions in political and economic matters. Such a mindset makes little room for memories and, in fact, promotes rapid forgetfulness, especially of uncomfortable memories. Nevertheless, another vector of thought simultaneously persists, one that prizes memories, emphasizes traditions and ancestral anamnetic forms, and is quite richly expressed in small `campesinos' and indigenous communities, where men and particularly women - though otherwise lacking political influence - are actively engaged in preserving their memories. Not surprisingly, these two vectors of thought share an uneasy co-existence. In these pages I will argue that these memories are actually considered dangerous on two fronts: first, because they interrupt our productive present and the system we live in; and, second because they challenge us to imagine, and even to work toward, a more just future, one not characterized by easy amnesties or corporate forgetfulness. I will support the view that memories enable us to conduct an honest reconstruction and analysis of the past, in all of its complexity, and then oblige us to integrate lessons learned truthfully in the present. In Mexico, such memories need to be listened to and integrated as part of our identity as a society and a Church for, if we do not, we will always remain a broken society and an incomplete Church. This position, along with the questions that it raises, will be confronted and illuminated herein by a theological perspective on memory. After all, it was Israel's belief in being in the memory of God that gave that people their solid communitarian consistency. Later on, the Christian community inherited this anamnetic culture as the core of its liturgical life and Christian praxis: "Do this in memory of me". Johann Baptist Metz reflects theologically on the "cultural amnesia" that drags us towards a dehumanizing progress, emphasizing merely technological advancement. Societal adoption of such an attitude inevitably leaves victims in its wake, namely, those who do not - or cannot - achieve the standards of success established by the technocrats. Metz identifies the destruction of memory as a typical tool of totalitarian domination. The slavery of human beings begins when their memories are taken away; this is the principle and foundation of all colonization. Metz explains that we must remember the memories of these victims in order to interrupt our present situation and activate creative resistance. He suggests a mysticism characterized by suffering unto God while, at the same time, keeping our eyes open to reality. Consequently a praxis is realized wherein we act as subjects in freedom participating actively in the construction of history. It is important for the Mexican Church to recover these memories at both the social and ecclesial levels and to allow them to interrupt us, because they constitute a new way for us to look back at what we have been, and to construct what we want to be. In doing so, we can be a community of memory and hope

Professional translators employ different kinds of electronic tools in order to achieve increased levels of productivity and quality. The two most prominent of such tools are translation memories and, more recently, machine translation. This thesis investigates how the functioning of translation tools and specific aspects of their graphical user interfaces affect translators’ performance. The study was carried out through an experiment with ten professional translators working from English into Spanish in the domain of software localisation. It was found that translation metadata – a set of meta-information elements provided by the tools about the translation suggestions – affect performance indicators such as speed, quality and typing effort. It was also found that translators spend more time thinking about how to translate a segment than actually typing or making edits to the suggested translations. The results of this study can help identify more efficient workflows, with benefits in terms of costs and quality for translators and their clients. The findings can also help understand the cognitive processes behind the translating activity and contribute to the development of tools that are more efficient and ergonomic, with a view to increasing job satisfaction.

Full textThis dissertation focuses on the musical experiences of senior women. The general purpose of the research is to comprehend the musical experiences in the memories of elderly women, and, as specific objectives, it was intended to evoke spaces in which these musical experiences happen/have happened, reconstruct the kinds of musical experiences, interpret the means through which these experiences were lived, describing and discussing the content of these experiences. Considered as qualitative research, it has as methodological option the Oral History and uses the interview as procedure for collecting information. Participated in this study 10 elderly women who are part of the Coral AFRID (Project Physical Activity and Recreational Facilities for the Elderly). The theoretical reference is based on the discussion concerning the musical experience as social experience, as well as the issues regarding the memory and recollections related to the memory of elderly people, which, in this case, are women. It was observed that the musical experiences of the women happened mainly in the areas of family, home, school, church, parties. Musical experiences related to music, with singing, see the play. The radio was the medium most used by the elderly to live music throughout their lives. The memories are permeated with musical learning from experienced to learn when they listen to or sing along and / or alone. It is believed that that this study contributes to the area in the elaboration of musical-pedagogical propositions involving this public, for the planning and organizing of public politics related to the aging process, the comprehension of the ways music and its teaching/learning can be present in this process, enabling a different perception of oldness.

Full textIn a cultural history perspective based on the methods of the “visual turn” this thesis deals with the illustrated children’s literature before and during the First World War and shows that the German children’s “war culture” did not appear ex nihilo in 1914. It had its origins in the memorial culture of pre-war time, which glorified the warfare. It relied on a heroic fantasy that came from historical paintings and used emotional reflexes. 1914 provoked an intensification and development of the “war culture”. While publishers put patriotic books on the market when the war of attrition took place, these books continued to convey familiar and reassuring images of a war of movement. As hostilities lasted, kitsch drawings with children’s characters and caricatures of the enemy used to justify the conflict, stylized in a defensive war. These fun strata of the children’s “war culture”, which came from the political iconography for adults, created an expansion of readership: children from the age of three up were concerned as well as school children. However, apologetic self-images were more important than the hatred and jeer of the enemy. Together with caricatures, they reinforced the national community and dealt with the bonds between the soldiers and the home front, which became a growing concern for permanently separated families. Because of deprivations, the books became sanctimonious and aimed at mobilizing children in the home front. In this context, albums were sold to raise funds for patriotic associations. According to the number of books printed, this patriotic literature, probably targeting children from both the middle and upper classes, were a success

Full textThis research deals with the origins and architectural projects of the Cultural Sector of Brasília and pursues to understand the antagonisms and similarities between the Pilot Plan conducted by Lucio Costa and the various proposals made by the architect Oscar Niemeyer and other architects to the site, many of them built and consolidated. The Esplanade of Ministries in Brasilia is the most representative site of the urbanism and architecture of the city and fifty-‐three years after the foundation of the capital, the Cultural Sector is the only part of the Esplanade that has not yet completely implemented. This situation associated with the legally protection of the urban site of Brasilia sanctioned in 1991 and the decree number 314/92 establishing exclusivity of architectural intervention to the two authors of Brasilia signs the concern among architects, citizens and government to conciliate the purposes of Costa and Niemeyer. Despite the positive reference of both architects about progressive urbanism model in the idealization of the urban plan of Brasília and even a consensus and maturation of concepts and critiques of modern urbanism, associated with a respectful attitude towards the architectural precedents, there are explicit contradictions between projects executed by Oscar Niemeyer and the pilot plan designed by Lucio Costa that leave until today many unfinished projects and controversial discussions about the sector. The understanding of this process development results in the critical analysis of architectural projects confronted to the Pilot Plan of Lucio Costa and its historical precedents, beyond the inventory organization of the Cultural Sector projects.

War occupies an important place in the collective memory of the United States, with many of its defining moments centered on times of intense trauma. American memory of World War I, however, pales in comparison to the Civil War and World War II, which has led to the conflict’s categorization as a “forgotten” war—terminology that ignores the widespread commemorative efforts undertaken by Americans in the war’s aftermath. In fact, the interwar period witnessed a multitude of memorialization projects, ranging from architectural memorials to literature. It is this dichotomy between contemporary understanding and the reality of the conflict’s aftermath that is at the heart of this study, which seeks to illuminate the prominent position held by the First World War in early twentieth century American society. The dissertation examines three war memorials: the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri; the District of Columbia World War Memorial in West Potomac Park, Washington, D.C.; and Kansas State University’s Memorial Stadium in Manhattan, Kansas. The work also analyzes seven volumes of soldier poetry, published between 1916 and 1921: Poems, by Alan Seeger; With the Armies of France, by William Cary Sanger, Jr.; Echoes of France: Verses from my Journal and Letters, March 14, 1918 to July 14, 1919 and Afterwards, by Amy Robbins Ware; The Tempering, by Howard Swazey Buck; Wampum and Old Gold, by Hervey Allen; The Log of the Devil Dog and Other Verses, by Byron H. Comstock; and Rhymes of a Lost Battalion Doughboy, by Lee Charles McCollum. Despite the presence of some thematic similarities between the two modes of remembrance, each mode had different objectives and audiences, contributing to the creation of distinct and competing forms of collective memory regarding American involvement in the Great War. Taken together, the two modes provide a more complete picture of American memorialization to World War I than if studied independently. This interdisciplinary approach to understanding commemorative efforts during the interwar period is vital to understanding the war and its legacy, and thus beneficial to both historical scholarship and the public.

There is now a trend in modern society of a tendency towards the materialistic within the home dwelling environment, we may have gradually forgotten that originally the home was a place for emotional cohesion. Therefore, to find the love and care given by the family and convey them through architectural space, this study started with the exploration of myself to discover memories of the home through the body, and to generate a flowing passage from time, in order to connect emotions from our memories to the present time, and allowing “The Home of Memories” to become the affirmation of the future home. To achieve the research purpose mentioned above, the following two ways to construct a home was found through the preliminary literature reviews and case studies, including: 1) Memory and Space: using memories as the investigated site and mnemonics to develop the place, images and words in order to discover the home within our hearts; 2) Spatial Aesthetics of Montage: from 2D, 3D to 4D dimensions, the perception of space was examined, and through theories and case studies about architectural spaces, a conversion method for overlapping collage, time-space sequences and a passage for emotional association was developed. From my own experiences of the two homes I have lived in, I explored the design of “The Home of Memories” with the following steps: 1) discovering the memories of the home; 2) reproduction of the memories; 3) generating the elements of the home; 4) representation of the home. During the childhood period, the body’s habits in different uses of space were integrated from the memory of “playing”. During the teenager period, the dynamic and flexible spaces were transformed from the memories of “sharing” of learning. Thereby I readily developed the required spatial elements that were transformed from the memories. Finally, I chose the empty land left by my deceased grandfather as the design site. Through integrating my own and my family’s memories of the home, I created “The Home of Memories” with emotions of the home from the past and the present environment. This study is a record process of designing a home, intended for people to re-think about the home dwelling environment, and for designers to unlock the clasp within their hearts to understand the needs for dialogues and communication. Future studies will involve the bodily perception of space, environment and memories to realize that we usually rely too much on sight. From this, we should incorporate smell, taste, touch and hearing in order to remember the memories of atmospheres, and through material, light and sound textures, the limitations of the sight can be transcended, bringing the home environment to a more spiritual and soulful level.

Tyzen Hsiao, an important contemporary composer in Taiwan, had an unordinary life because of music. His composes are mostly based on deep feelings towards Taiwan and religious devotion. This article is selected from his piano suite “Memories of Home.” Behind each suite's creative motives there is a fascinating little story. From the music, one can feel the composer's most true emotional expression. By analyzing musical composition, the performer can think deeper and better understand the composer’s original interpretation of the music, in addition to presenting the music in a way that allows room for imagination for the audience. The author of this article hopes to provide the performer with different potential interpretations, as well as provide the reader with different orientations to listen to the delicate arrangements of the music.
