Abstract:
In May 2016, protesters affiliated with the student organization Justice for Queer and Trans Students occupied the University of Vermont’s (UVM) Dean of Libraries’ office to demand that the David W. Howe Memorial Library (then known as the Bailey/Howe Library) immediately convert select gender-segregated restrooms—meaning those labeled for use for only men or only women—to gender-free restrooms to accommodate the needs of trans and gender non-conforming students during spring finals week. The protest followed the delivery of a petition with more than 1,000 signatures seeking change, as well as ongoing conversations between the libraries and student activists. Student organizer Lindsey “Z.” McCarron told The Vermont Cynic, “This is an immediate and real need that is affecting people’s health and safety every day.”

Abstract:
Objective: Various types of organ donation memorials, to include tree planting, rose garden memorials, candle lighting, donor memorial wall events are conducted throughout the year primarily by organ procurement organizations (OPOs). Although the benefits of such events have not been explored there has been continued interest by hospital staff and administrators to host such events. The purpose of this grounded theory pilot study was to describe the process of healing that a hospital-based organ donation memorial ceremony creates at the individual level and organ donation awareness and advocacy at the community level. Methods: The researchers interviewed nine organ donor family members who were invited to attend a hospital-based organ donation memorial ceremony at one Level I Trauma Center located in South Texas. Results: A 4-stage social process, “makes the hole in the heart smaller”, was identified from the qualitative interview data. Participants journeyed through a four stage process to make the hole in their hearts smaller. The four stages are: choosing to attend, being able to connect, keeping the memory alive and knowing something good came from it. As participants moved between stages their meaning for attendance changed. Families shifted from personal grieving and needing support to supporting other donor families and in the process became advocates for organ donation. Conclusions: The findings from this study validate the benefits of hospital-based organ donation memorial ceremonies. Families reported these ceremonies support their decision to donate, while also providing a means of continued emotional support throughout their grief process. The memorial event provides a safe venue for organ donor families to connect and share with others who have had a similar experience, while acknowledging their loved ones gift of life. Hospital-based organ donation memorial ceremonies and the permanent memorial structure increase awareness of organ donation for the community of donor families, hospital visitors and hospital staff.

Abstract:
This article explores how a digital memorial for forcibly disappeared persons contributes to transitional justice in Lebanon. It presents the joint establishment of an interactive digital memorial by a collective of nongovernmental organizations, relatives of missing persons, and youth volunteers. The case study is situated in debates on transitional justice, calls for democratization of collective memories and archives, and discussions on new information and communication technologies. The article demonstrates how the development and launch of Fushat Amal (Space for Hope) is shaped and confined by postwar sociopolitical realities that are all but favorable to memorialization or justice-seeking initiatives. It highlights how digitalized memories can open up spaces that remain closed in the offline world, enabling survivors to share their stories, build collectives, demand recognition, and advocate for justice. At the same time, the authors discuss the limitations of digital memorials in relation to questions of access, ownership, and sustainability.

Abstract:

Abstract:
‘DAMNATIO MEMORIAE’ AS A KIND OF PENALTY FOR REPRESSING THE MEMORY OF THE PUBLIC ENEMYSummary The paper presents damnatio memoriae – a kind of penalty for repressing the memory of the public enemy in ancient Rome. This penalty might be imposed by decree of the senat (or of the emperor) in case of the posthumous prosecution or conviction of a person on charges of treason (crimen maiestatis). Damnatio memoriae (or – in a technical, juridical expression – memoria damnata) was not intended to destroy recollection of a person who was condemned, but rather to dishonor the record of such a person. Penalties for repressing the memory, enacted separately or together, included for instance the eradication of visual representations of the person, in particular of statues, busts, coins and medallions, or the erasure of his name. The representations of the condemned, which already existed, were to be altered or destroyed, and there were to be no representations in the future. Some statues have meen modified – removed, replaced or reworked to represent someone new. The name of the enemy might be erased from some public documents (especially from the state lists of officials – the fasti) and inscriptions. Historians were sometimes not allowed to use names of those, who have suffered the penalty in question. There were also some decrees of the senat requiring the family to discontinue the use of a particular element of the name of public enemy (praenomen or cognomen). The penalties included a ban of the observance of the funeral and mourning. The family of convicted was forbidden to keep his portraits within the home or to mour for him. The body of the public enemy could be denied to his relatives and not buried. His bust could not be paraded at the funeral ceremonies of members of his family. According to Tacitus, who used to criticize the political repressions of the early emperors, damnatio memoriae is a vain penalty – memory will survive.

For my dear friend, colleague and comrade Joyce. I write this with great sadness. Joyce fought a strong and brave battle against cancer for nearly two years, hoping that the treatments would finally end so she could get on with her life. This was my hope, too, because Joyce has so much ‘unfinished business’ – the book to complete, the articles to write and her contribution to the struggles of the land movement in Brazil to make. In a truly Freirean sense, she was building a movement with this community of farmers, teachers and academics. Joyce struggled against capitalism and its many violences and oppressions – imperialism, racism, sexism, ableism. ‘Fuck them all,’ she would say. ‘Fuck them all and let us build a better world’.

Abstract:
This article reports on the feasibility and effect of the brief hope intervention (BHI) in terms of increasing the hope level and psychological and physical health outcomes of rehabilitating cancer patients (RCP). Chinese RCP living in the community were invited to join the study. The BHI consisted of four one-on-one sessions: two (1-hour) face-to-face sessions and two (30-minute) telephone follow-up sessions in between. There were three core features in the hope therapy: (a) goal thoughts: finding workable goals, (b) pathway thoughts: finding ways to reach the targets, and (c) agency thoughts: positive self-talk to optimize their motivation to accomplish the set goals. A one-group pre- and postintervention design was used. Outcome measures included the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale, the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), and the State Hope Scale. Recruitment, attrition, and qualitative feedback were collected to understand their comments on BHI. A total of 40 participants were recruited (female 92.3%). The mean age was 57.2 years ( SD = 6.7). The participants had significant improvement in all aspects of the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale, with moderate-to-large effect sizes ( d = 0.49–0.74). The changes in present hope and depression scores were insignificant, with small effect sizes ( d = 0.17–0.34). The BHI seemed to be promising in producing both physical and psychological benefits in RCP

Early in the spring of 1990, Professor Josef van Ess of Tübingen University came to visit me at my home at Oxford. In the course of conversation he asked me about an Ethiopic memorial tablet he had seen in Westminster Abbey. To my chagrin I had to own that the existence of such an inscription was quite unknown to me. In the hope of removing (or at least of mitigating) this stain of inexcusable ignorance, I hastened to the Abbey the following week – only to find it closed to visitors on account of a broadcast recording performance. I then wrote to the Assistant Librarian of Westminster Abbey (Mrs Enid Nixon) who proved to be immensely helpful and knowledgeable and was kind enough to answer my queries and to provide me with precious information. I have since been able to inspect the monument in situ.

In this article, we explore the subjective well-being of empty nesters who lived in rural eastern China ( N = 967). The Memorial University of Newfoundland Scale of Happiness is used to measure subjective well-being. The results indicate that Memorial University of Newfoundland Scale of Happiness is appropriate for empty nesters in rural China due to its reliability and validity. Generally, male empty nesters report greater subjective well-being scores than females. Negative factors include low levels of education, being a widow or widower, or being unmarried. It is argued that the empty nesters’ incapability to access adequate social service and home care leads to their poor subjective well-being.

Abstract:
In this article we explore a pair of distinctive and associated Second World War monuments on Slapton Sands in the South Hams district of Devon, UK. The Slapton Sands Evacuation Memorial was erected in 1945 by the US armed forces to commemorate the sacrifice of local people who evacuated their homes ahead of battle training in preparation for D-Day. Meanwhile, the Torcross Tank Memorial was built in 1984 under the initiative of a local man to commemorate those US servicemen who lost their lives during the battle training in the Exercise Tiger tragedy. The historical context, form, materiality, biography and location of each monument are appraised and their relationship with each other is discussed. The article argues that from the 1940s to the present day, the monuments have evolved as sacrificial sites and serve to both commemorate the events they describe and define the identities of local people through their reuse of places and material culture.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article shows how two pioneering institutions for female education in colonial Bengal, Bethune and Sakhawat Memorial Girls’ Schools, made significant contributions to female education at a time when women’s education was mostly restricted to home teaching. The study brings out the underlying contradictions between traditional and modern approaches towards education displayed in the goals, admission process and curriculum structure of these two schools. Analysing their respective contributions demonstrates that Bethune and Sakhawat Memorial Girls’ schools produced the modern Bengali bhadramahila (well-educated woman) who secured higher education, but was also rooted in traditional values. The final section illustrates how with the expansion of education in the twentieth century, the boundaries of the reformist zeal gradually blurred, so that educated women in Bengal could fight for greater equality.

Abstract:
Sofia committee of the All-Ukrainian Archaeological Committee lead by the VUAN academician Oleksa Petrovych Novytskyi, made a lot to research and preserve the most important Rus`-Ukrainian memorial – Sofia Kyivska. Significant efforts have been done to preserve the icons, frescos, and mosaics of the cathedral. Effort of AUAC and Sofia committee to reconstruct and restore the memorial in 1920–1930-th is also analysed. Archaeological field works carried out in 1920-th still remain not well known despite the fact that they were exceptionally important, although not supported by authorities. It is confirmed that planned extensive archaeological excavations were not carried out because of lack of funds. Archaeological works were strongly needed when some parts of the building were ruined by collapses on its territory. For example, in July 1924 a great hole was appeared between the bell tower and Small Sofia. Regretfully, Sofia Committee scientists could not analyse the hole, because without their knowledge the hole was filled out with trash by workers who repaired the cathedral. Next year one more hole near the North wall of Sofia appeared. It is stated that scientists with material and organizational support of the communal department (workers and instruments were provided) archaeological excavation were completed. Sofia Committee created a separate commission lead by O Novytskyi to explore places of hole and underpasses, which were opened to understand the first priority steps needed to begin the research. It is noted that archaeological part was lead by Petro Kurinnyi, Valeria Kozlovska, Kateryna Melnyk-Antonovych, Mykhailo Rydnytskyi, Vasyl Lyaskoronskyi. Later, due to emigration of others researchers, excavation has been led by M. Lyaskoronskyi. He published the short summary in which the main results of works were shown, materials of which belonged to ХІХ century and construction (cellar) was dated back to XVII–XVIIІ centuries. O Novytskyi in his short note, which is stored in the archive of Sofia Committee, described main architectural elements of the cellar and the underpasses that lead to it. It is confirmed that Sofia Committee want to create a cover over the memorial for research and touristic purposes but was not granted with sufficient funds. Despite the absence of new excavations at the site existing results are interesting and important for modern researchers. Key words: All-Ukrainian Archaeological Committee, Sofia Kyivska, Sofia Committee, archaeological excavations, Oleksa Novytskyi, Vasyl Lyaskoronskyi.

Abstract:
The ‘tyranny of distance’ that once marked Australia's standing as an outpost of the British Empire may have dissipated, yet there is much to suggest that the insecurities that characterised its colonial status now find renewed expression in Australia's alignment with American political, cultural and military interests and policies. Assisting in fostering public allegiance to a new American Empire, are some segments of the media that, far from reporting the news, now engage in propagandist style campaigning that collapses time, space, and difference. The ‘Shine On’ Memorial initiated by Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper to mark the first anniversary of the 9/11 bombings exemplifies this approach. Imploring citizens to join in ‘a community memorial’ as ‘a mark of respect to the victims’ and ‘a symbol of hope’, this campaign dug deep into Australian insecurities to manufacture an appearance of consent, and thus operated to mask and delegitimate difference and dissent.

Abstract:
The use of sound was studied in several of Tennyson's shorter and better-known poems (e.g., Break, Break, Break and Ulysses) and in In Memoriam A. H. H. Poems were broken down into their component phonemes which were then classified in terms of their emotional character. The emotional character of sounds preferentially employed in each of the shorter poems matched the emotional theme of the poem (e.g., sounds employed in Airy Fairy Lilian and Lady of Shallot were most pleasant, those in Crossing the Bar were least pleasant). The emotional character of sounds preferentially employed in the final segments of In Memoriam revealed an underlying sadness to the poem's close belied by Tennyson's own interpretation of it. Analyses of In Memoriam also highlighted the elegy's frequent transitions from grief to hope and back again. It is concluded that Tennyson used sound (both consciously and unconsciously) to amplify the effects of his poetry.

Abstract:
Metropole. Paisagem. Umbrais.
