Humphreys, Matthew. "Development and structural investigation of monocoque fibre composite trusses." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2003. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/15898/1/Matthew_Humphreys_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Fibre composite materials are gaining recognition in civil engineering applications as a viable alternative to traditional materials. Their migration from customary automotive, marine, aerospace and military industries into civil engineering has continued to gain momentum over the last three decades as new civil engineering applications develop. The use of fibre composite materials in civil engineering has now evolved from non-structural applications, such as handrails and cladding, into primary structural applications such as building frames, bridge decks and concrete reinforcement. However, there are issues which are slowing the use of fibre composite materials into civil engineering. Issues include high costs, difficulties in realising potential benefits, general lack of civil engineers' familiarity with the material and relatively little standardisation in the composites industry. For composites to truly offer a viable alternative to traditional construction materials in the civil engineering marketplace, it is essential that these issues be addressed. It is proposed that this situation could be improved by demonstrating that potential benefits offered by composites can be achieved with familiar civil engineering forms. These forms must be well suited to fibre composite materials and be able to produce safe and predictable civil engineering structures with existing structural engineering methods. Of the numerous structural forms currently being investigated for civil engineering applications, the truss form appears particularly well suited to fibre composites. The truss is a familiar structural engineering form which possesses certain characteristics that make it well suited to fibre composite materials. In this research a novel monocoque fibre composite truss concept was developed into a working structure and investigated using analytical and experimental methods. To the best of the author's knowledge the research presented in this thesis represents the first doctoral research into a structure of this type. This thesis therefore presents the details of the development of the monocoque fibre composite (MFC) truss concept into a working structure. The developed MFC truss was used as the basis for a detailed investigation of the structural behaviour of the MFC truss elements and the truss as a whole. The static structural behaviour of the principal MFC truss elements (tension members, compression members and joints) was investigated experimentally and analytically. Physical testing required the design and fabrication of a number of novel test rigs. Well established engineering principles were used along with complex finite element models to predict the behaviour of the tested truss elements and trusses. Results of the theoretical analysis were compared with experimental results to determine how accurately their static structural behaviour could be predicted. It was found that the static structural behaviour of all three principal truss elements could be accurately predicted with existing engineering methods and finite element analysis. The knowledge gained from the investigation of the principal truss elements was then used in an investigation of the structural behaviour of the MFC truss. Three full-scale MFC trusses were fabricated in the form of conventional Pratt, Howe and Warren trusses and tested to destruction. The investigation included detailed finite element modelling of the full-scale trusses and the results were compared to the full-scale test results. Results of the investigation demonstrated that the familiar Pratt, Howe and Warren truss forms could be successfully manufactured with locally available fibre composite materials and existing manufacturing technology. The static structural behaviour of these fibre composite truss forms was accurately predicted with well established engineering principles and finite element analysis. A successful marriage between fibre composite materials and a civil engineering structure has been achieved. Monocoque fibre composite trusses have been developed in the familiar Pratt, Howe and Warren truss forms. These structures possess characteristics that make them well suited to applications as primary load bearing structures.

Legood, Alison. "Trust in leader-follower relationships : how and when trust building enhances dyadic and organisational outcomes." Thesis, Aston University, 2013. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/20892/.

Full text
Abstract:
Guided by theory in both the trust and leadership domains, the overarching aim of this thesis was to answer a fundamental question. Namely, how and when does trust-building between leaders and followers enhance leader-member exchange (LMX) development and organisational trust? Although trust is considered to be at the crux of the leader-follower relationship, surprisingly little theoretical or empirical attention has been devoted to understanding the precise nature of this relationship. By integrating both a typology of trustworthy behaviour and a process model of trust development with LMX theory, study one developed and tested a new model of LMX development with leader-follower trust-building as the primary mechanism. In a three wave cross-lagged design, 294 student dyads in a business simulation completed measures of trust perceptions and LMX across the first 6 months of the LMX relationship. Trust-building was found to account for unexplained variance in the LMX construct over time, while controlling for initial relationship quality, thus confirming the critical role of the trust-building process in LMX development. The strongest evidence was found for the role of integrity-based trust-building behaviour, albeit only when such behaviour was not attributed to insincere motives. The results for ability and benevolence-based trustworthy behaviour revealed valued insights into the developmental nature of trustworthiness perceptions within LMX relationships. Thus, the pattern of results in study one provided a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the dynamic interplay between trust and LMX. In study two, leader trust-building was investigated cross-sectionally within an organisational sample of 201 employees. The central aim of this study was to investigate whether leader trust-building within leader-follower relationships could be leveraged for organisational trust. As expected, the trust-building process instigated by members in study one was replicated for leaders in study two. In addition, the results were most consistent for benevolence-based trust building, whereas both integrity- and ability-based trust-building were moderated by the position of the leader within the organisation’s hierarchy. Overall, the findings of this thesis shed considerable light on the richness of trusting perceptions in organisations, and the critical role of trust-building in LMX development and organisational trust.

Groth, Emma, and Yulia Ippolitova. "How does organizational culture affect organizational and individual trust? - Actiona Group in Russia." Thesis, Högskolan i Gävle, Företagsekonomi, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-29512.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim: This study aims to explore how organizational culture affect organizational- and individual trust, and how the relationship is between the three constructs. Method: Qualitative method is used for this case study. Semi-structured interviews are conducted with ten representatives of the targeted company. Respondents hold different positions in the organization, including top- and middle managers, and line employees. The data was analyzed thematically according to the three main points of research questions such as organizational culture, organizational trust and individual trust. Results and Conclusions: Organizational culture and values are set by owners and top management of the company but are influenced by national culture. By using national culture and individual characteristics, and in lining them with organizational culture, organizations can enhance both profit and image. Employee motivation and commitment are enhanced as a result of a high level of trust. With the help of informal control, organizational trust also affects trust at an individual level. However, it is important to employ people whose values match the organizations. Suggestions for future research: This study is limited to one company in Russia. For future research, we recommend a longitudinal study of several companies to compare them overall, to find the impact of trust on each organizational culture and how it affects employees and business in the long term conditions. Another research approach could be to compare organizational cultures of the companies from different countries to investigate the advantages and differences of factors of success. Contribution of the thesis: The main contribution is that certain organizational culture affects trust in the organization. Development of trust as a part of organizational internal culture provides certain benefits such as efficiency, innovation, results, motivation and commitment. Trust as a part of organizational culture provides a foundation that enables the organization to develop and adapt to the market. It is important to recruit people with similar values as the company to be able to develop the desired organizational culture. Keywords: Organizational culture, national culture, organizational trust, individual trust, control, motivation, work efficiency, satisfaction, recruitment.

Full text
Abstract:
Online trust has been cited as one of the most important reasons as to why someone choose to participate in e-commerce. The main research goal in this thesis is to explore the concept of online trust in e-commerce, how it is formed and by extension how it can be designed for. This thesis considers the research question “How can e-commerce websites be designed to be trust-inducing?”. First a literature study on the background of trust research was performed and the underlying factors of trust and the design elements that affect the formation of trust mapped out. Then popular Swedish e-commerce websites were investigated and design patterns were mapped out based on those websites. Based on previous research and the experience gained from these websites, 13 guidelines with focus on trust-inducing e-commerce design were created. To test the usefulness of the guidelines, analyses of websites using the guidelines were performed, as well as expert evaluations of websites by six of the authors peers. Overall this study found that the design of the websites that were investigated was lacking in customer service, third-party certifications and social-cue design in general. The thesis contributes to better website trust design by putting forth guidelines. The knowledge gained from the analyses of websites is a contribution in itself since it provides an understanding of how well e-commerce websites design for trust and which are the most common design issues.

Fellenius, Anton, Dorje Worpa, and Philipp Swegmark. "Trust Building in the Sharing Economy : How Companies Build Trust between Peers and towards the Platform." Thesis, Internationella Handelshögskolan, Högskolan i Jönköping, IHH, Företagsekonomi, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-39782.

Abstract:
Purpose With trust being an essential component in the sharing economy, this paper aims to understand how trust is established in practice and which relationships between consumer, supplier and platform specific tools and processes serve.   Problem Previous research has acknowledged the importance of trust but solely investigated single trust-building tools. Instead of presenting a trust construct composed of mechanisms describing their interplay between the three parties involved in the sharing economy, previous scholars have focused their research on the specificities of single tools and processes. With the sharing economy as a recent phenomenon, companies have an interest in investigating the implementation of different mechanisms and their effectiveness.   Method and Methodology This paper adopts a qualitative research approach in which content analysis was applied to group tools and processes and link them to one of the six trust streams between consumer, supplier and the platform. Moreover, the research deductively builds on existing literature by using present theory as a foundation and inductively analyses findings based on collected data.   Findings The findings of this paper reveal a broad spectrum of different trust-building tools and processes. Linking these to one of the specific relationship between the three parties in the sharing economy, this paper concludes that companies emphasize on gaining the consuming peer’s trust both towards the platforms and the supplying peers.

Abstract:
As e-health systems are becoming more common and necessary, it is an important field to explore. One important part that has not yet been explored enough is the formation of trust within e-health. An established approach to help formation of trust in other fields is that of user experience design. This Master thesis is focused on the topic of trust formation of first-time e-health service users and how user experience design can influence trust formation. For fulfilling the purpose, the method of think-aloud and semi-structured interviews were chosen. In addition to that, a prototype of an e-health service was developed. The outcome of the interviews was examined through a thematic analysis in order to answer the research questions. Based on the analysis, new aspects which influence trust formation on the surface level were identified, as well as some previously known were confirmed. The themes which are overlapping with previously conducted studies are Design feeling and Element placement. The newly identified themes contain Consistency, Colour and some aspects of Reading experience. The reasons for the identified aspects were categorized into the two themes of Craftsmanship and Expectations. Those findings were compared with previous studies, and recommendations for future research were formulated.

Abstract:
The digitization of the home makes automated systems more common in our everyday lives. The home, which used to be a private and personal place, now becomes a center for digital devices, which in itself creates new technological opportunities. The smart home is one of these opportunities as it offers the user safety and security while the units in the home can help us with both daily problems and long-term challenges. An autonomous unit in a home environment can do everything from controlling music to keeping track of energy consumption. The common denominator the autonomous units have is that people take them into their homes; their private sphere, therefore, the question we ask ourselves becomes the following: How does a user build trust against autonomous units in a home environment?

Abstract:
When it comes to how the team members build trust three themes were found; knowledge sharing, expectations and shared values and relationship building. Further on when it comes to the challenges five bigger themes were found which are; distance, culture decisions from above, knowledge and other challenges. Furthermore, the study also explored how difficult it is to build trust due to its complexity as several challenges were identified. Some suggestions have been made on how to face these challenges and it has been concluded that you need to take into account many different aspects when it comes to building trust in agile teams.

Ben, Mansur A. M. "How trust factors affect business relationships in Saudi-Arabian companies." Thesis, University of Salford, 2013. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/30627/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates how to develop a better understanding of successful business relationships in the context of Saudi Arabia. The main objectives of this research are to explore how trust factors affect business relationship in Saudi Arabian companies. Primary and secondary methods of data collection are explored and the methods used to conduct qualitative data analysis are discussed and justified. Semi-structured interviews were employed to fulfil the study’s aims and objectives. The researcher interviewed 25 Saudi Arabian employees regarding how trust factors affect business relationships in Saudi Arabian companies. This thesis identifies and analyses the barriers to trust in business relationship that can exist in Saudi companies, using a multiple interview approach. The research required in-depth understanding to enable the development of trust factors (individual trust, organisational trust and national trust). The result is the discovery that a lack of skills, knowledge and experience of business relationship development and the correct approach to business and management can affect trust factors in the context of Saudi Arabian companies. This research study also found culture to be a unique type of behaviour that influences the creation of profitable relationships in Saudi companies. This study can be used in further research in other organisations, whether in Saudi Arabia or other countries. Finally, the researcher considers the whole experience of conducting this study to have been revealing, and has confirmed that strong potential exists within Saudi Arabian companies that have been completely suppressed in past years by the involvement of the social and business level. Relationships are necessary at the individual, organisational, and national levels in order for foreign companies to build trust with Saudi Arabian ones.

Abstract:
People all over the world are embracing online shopping and there is a general agreement that trust plays a key role in influencing online shopping frequency. This project seeks to address the increasing need for new studies in this area. This is an empirical project that investigates the moderating effects of culture on the impact of trust on online shopping frequency. The central focus of this project was to examine whether culture affects the decision of the international consumer to trust in online shopping contexts. In an attempt to contribute to both cross-cultural and e-commerce research, the project examined shoppers across 34 countries using two of Hofstede’s six cultural dimensions: Uncertainty avoidance and Individualism. The project took a post-positivist approach to research and adopted a mixed method research design. Thus, data were collected using both quantitative and qualitative research designs, which provided a complimentary triangulation of the results. Both secondary and primary data sources were used, as the project developed a model and tested several hypotheses based on the literature on e-commerce, social psychology, and culture. Seven hypotheses were tested and research results revealed that trust has a positive impact on online shopping frequency in a multicultural context. Interestingly, no moderation effects were found for culture. The importance of this project lies in the fact that it seeks to further research at the intersection of culture, trust, and online shopping. Moreover, unlike most e-commerce projects that gather data from students within a single country, this project examines data from respondents of various demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, across several countries.

Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Företagsekonomiska institutionen, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-185848.

Abstract:
The advancements in technology have enabled contemporary organisations to work remotely, and this work structure is increasingly being adopted by more industries. This forces organisations to implement global virtual teams, that despite differences in geographic locations, time zones and cultures, are obligated to work towards organisational goals. It is possible to identify both opportunities and challenges for leaders within organisations. These can be viewed from various organisational perspectives, although one of the most recurring topics for leaders to consider when managing global virtual teams, is the notion of trust. Trust is argued to be one of the fundamental constituents for teams to work effectively. Even though the use of global virtual teams is becoming more prevalent, research on trust in regard to virtual teams is limited. Prior research argues that leadership is the key success factor for determining the level of trust in global virtual teams.

However, there is a research gap on specifically how leaders work in terms of the specific actions that are taken in order to facilitate for establishing trust. This case study therefore investigates how leaders establish trust in their geographically dispersed virtual teams.

In order to answer this research question, nine leaders were interviewed through qualitative in-depth semi-structured interviews.

Full text
Abstract:
Communication between health professionals (HPs) and voice hearers (VHs) concerning the interpretation of voices has received little attention. The present study attempts to address this gap in the existing literature. It is known that various approaches are taken by HPs towards VHs and that the dominant model used within the National Health Service (NHS) is the medical model. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidelines (2002) recommend that VHs be offered psychotherapeutic interventions but remain dominated by recommendations concerning medication. The aim of this study is to examine how VHs have experienced communication with HPs for their voices in a context where different perspectives may be adopted. Five VHs (two female and three male) were recruited from a Community Mental Health Team and its associated psychiatric ward and were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. A discursively informed variant of interpretative phenomenological analysis (lPA) was used to analyse the data. Four main themes emerged from the analysis. Theme (1) 'making sense of the voices' demonstrated that participants drew upon a variety of theories when interpreting their voices, had positive and negative experiences of voice hearing and varying degrees of acceptance of their voices. Theme (2) 'separation and inclusion' highlighted that some participants separated themselves from other VHs and the concept of mental illness whilst others valued similarities with others and viewed mental illness as part of themselves. Theme (3) 'interaction with HPs' showed that communication with HPs was chiefly experienced negatively but could be positive and the issue of trust impacted greatly on this. Theme (4) 'impact of intervention with HPs' revealed that medication and psychotherapy were evaluated both positively and negatively by participants. These findings are discussed in relation to relevant literature, clinical implications are explored and areas for further research are identified.

Pruch, Jared. "How Do Conservation Land Trusts Come to Embrace Agriculture? A Case Study from Oregon." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/22732.

Full text
Abstract:
In part because of the state’s unique land use system, Oregon’s land trusts have largely focused their efforts on the protection of lands with wildlife habitat values, rather than productive agricultural land. And yet a confluence of contemporary trends – including population growth, aging farmer-landowners, and a growing regard for the conservation values embedded in well-stewarded farmland – are causing some land trusts to re-evaluate their conservation priorities. By conducting in-depth interviews with land trust staff and board members, farmers and ranchers, and land use advocates around the state, my work seeks to make transparent the network of influences underlying this shift. Making use of nonprofit management theory, I argue that land trusts change their conservation priorities through a combination of environmental assessment and managerial vision. Several predictors – willingness to innovate, agricultural representation within the organization, and community priorities – increase the likelihood that land trusts will include farmland as a conservation priority.

McKnight, Kimberly W. "Communication, Empathy, and Trust: Exploring Teachers' Partnerships With the Families of Their Most Challenging Students." VCU Scholars Compass, 2017. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/5052.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this embedded mixed methods collective case study was to explore eight kindergarten, first, and second grade teachers’ experiences partnering with families of their students who are at risk for emotional or behavioral disorders (EBDs). The teachers worked in two high-poverty, non-accredited Title-1 schools in an urban city. The study was part of a federally funded intervention called Behavioral, Emotional, and Social Training: Competent Learners Achieving School Success (BEST in CLASS- Elementary; BiC-E; Sutherland et al., 2017), which is targeted for students at risk for the development of EBDs. It uses evidence- based instructional practices to decrease students’ problem behaviors and increase their engagement. Teachers had BiC-E coaches help them implement a Home-School Partnership manual and process with 1 to 2 families of students at risk for EBDs. The teachers completed pretest measures, followed by a collection of weekly coaching reports for 15 weeks, then posttest measures and posttest interviews were conducted. The study intended to (a) learn more about teachers’ perspectives of partnering with families of their most challenging student and (b) help expand the literature about home-school partnership strategies for teachers to use with their families of students at risk for EBD. Mixed methods analyses revealed three keys to teachers’ successes in partnering with families: a) using the Home-School Partnership process with the CARES Framework encouraged more than just communication, it built empathy, cultural awareness, and effective communication strategies, b) presence of coaches promoted family- teacher partnerships, and c) encouragement of a partnership approach for teachers and families underscored the strengths both partners provided. A conceptual framework illustrated the complicated nature of these partnerships and underscored further study of this under-studied topic. Themes from the qualitative components shed light on the importance of congruence in the roles and expectations for both families and teachers in the partnership. Implications for policy and practice are discussed. Findings help inform the scant literature on targeted home- school partnership processes for teachers and families of students at risk for EBD.

Spazzoli, Rowan. "Mental health and social decision making: How depression alters the way we trust." Master's thesis, Faculty of Commerce, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/31013.

Full text
Abstract:
Depression is one of the most prevalent causes of disease burden in the world, with a particularly high prevalence in South Africa. Significant evidence exists for how depression affects employment, income and education, but there is little research on how it affects social decision making. This dissertation addresses the direct impact of depression on the prosocial behaviours that influence economic outcomes, specifically trust and trustworthiness, rather than the economic outcomes themselves. Using experimental and survey data from a randomised control trial, I show that depression reduces trust but, counter-intuitively, increases the trustworthiness of individuals. Additionally, I show that the Activate! programme reduces depression in men and increases trust in all participants. These results have significant implications for how we consider depression in economics, particularly on how it affects poverty by influencing prosocial.

Although research on interorganizational trust and its relationship with performance has been conducted for a long time and through Transaction Cost Economics, Social Exchange Theory and Marketing Channels, three gaps were found in the literature to be explored. First, there is an ongoing debate around three conceptual streams on the multidimensionality of trust and how it should be operationalized and measured - as a multidimensional construct defined by non dominant dimensions, a construct based on two dominant dimensions (affective and calculative), or as a single dimensional construct. Second, there is still some ambiguity in how the dimensions of trust have been defined and operationalized, leading to artifacts of measurement equivalence and contradicting results. Third, the different perceptions that buyers and suppliers may have in each dimension of trust and its consequence to logistics performance is still unclear. This research examines trust in buyer-supplier relationship in one empirical study with two independent samples in the logistics sector in Brazil: one examines buyers‘ perceptions and the second examines suppliers‘ perceptions. The two studies are then compared in order to determine the different perceptions of trust and implications to logistics performance. Multivariate analysis show that trust seems to be present in interorganizational relationships, and is the buyer´s perception of trust on the supplier that has a stronger relationship with logistics performance. At the same time, buyers have a more negative perception of suppliers in measurable dimensions of trust (competence and performance), while no differences were found in social aspects of trust (honesty and benevolence), and this may be a result of environment and cultural characteristics. Data analysis showed that trust can be defined as a multi-dimensional construct but should be measured as a single-dimensional construct driven by competence and credibility. This study contributes to practice by suggesting how managers could better leverage interorganizational trust to improve logistics performance.

How should organizations react to nowadays working context? Should employees’ behavioural surveillance be embraced and adopted by companies? What could be the implications of these practices? This study, based on an input-process-output model, seeks to investigate how monitoring employees may affect their attitudes towards the organization, more in specific, the focus will be on one variable: workers’ trust towards the organization. The research further proposes to determine whether the four organizational justice constructs significantly moderate the relationship between perceived monitoring and organizational trust. This research applied a quantitative research method, consisting of the analysis of responses obtained to a previously developed survey. Regression analysis was used in order to understand the relationship between monitoring in the workplace and trust towards the organization and to clarify the role played by the four dimensions of organizational justice. Inconsistently with the hypotheses developed, the results indicate that monitoring employees cannot be considered a factor, which negatively impacts the trust towards the organization. Likewise, the organizational justice domain does not significantly moderate this relationship: the four different organizational justice constructs reported statistically insignificant scores of interaction on the main relationship. Finally, the implications of the results are discussed with respect to clarifying possible explanation for the obtained outcomes and propose solutions to improve future studies in this area.

Abstract:
Teams can be a fundamental part of an organisational structure. A virtual team is characterised by having its team members spread across different locations, but they remain interdependent in their tasks. Nowadays, virtual teams have become more common as it is an effective way to share resources and remain competitive on the market. However, as virtual teams being a relatively new concept, it is still in need of a well-defined role of leadership. Recently, researchers have begun to realise that certain key factors exists within virtual leadership that facilitate and drive the success of teamwork within the virtual environment. For example, in order to function, a virtual team is dependent on technology, which classifies as a factor of virtual leadership. Other factors are communication, goal setting, leadership behaviour, and trust. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the significance of trust within virtual teams in Swedish organisations. Furthermore, it is also the aim of this thesis to investigate trust as a factor of virtual leadership and its relation to other factors of effective virtual leadership. To evaluate the significance of trust as a factor of leadership, we collected data by doing semi-structured interviews with four representatives from four organisations. This work process is influenced by a hermeneutic epistemology and we report our findings from these interviews in a narrative manner. Furthermore, we have adopted an inductive approach similar to grounded theory in order to analyse the data and to reach our conclusions. Our point of origin was that trust is the most significant of the leadership factors. However, our thesis concludes that communication is in fact the more significant of the different factors of virtual leadership. Without proper communication, none of the other factors carries any substance. Good communication yields trust and so does the other factors if they are well executed through proper communication. In that sense, all factors are interdependent within Swedish Organisations.

Abstract:
During the past five years the Red Cross has been involved in two different internal crises. All of them can be related to trustworthiness and brand image. Why would someone keep donating money to an organization that has been involved in fraud and suspicion of corruption? The purpose of this dissertation is to explore how non-governmental (NGO) and non-profit (NPO) organizations rebuild their brand image and trustworthiness after a crisis. We will look at the problem from both the organization’s and the public’s point of view. The dissertation is based on theories about brand image, trustworthiness and crisis management. For the theoretical framework a model was created from these different theories. This study is conducted as a qualitative case study with a realistic philosophy. The findings and analysis shows that the Red Cross has an elaborated crisis management with a good base that can be adapted to suit each situation. However, there are some miscommunications between the organization and the public. Therefore, we suggest three improvements that can be made: communicate directly to the public, investigate immediately when suspicions occur, communicate the internal functions to the public. The first conclusion is that their form of reactive crisis management is that they have a weak pre-emptive crisis management, which consists of diffuse guidelines. After the crisis, these guidelines are adapted to the crisis. The second conclusion is that the organizations brand image and trustworthiness was affected negatively directly after the crisis occurred. However, today both the brand image and the trustworthiness have become stronger than before the crisis. Recommendation for future research is that it can be conducted in another area and include the behavior aspects of the respondents. In addition, the crisis communication team could be investigated.

Abstract:
Leaders are often called upon to make sense out of complicated situations and give direction to others, and the situations have increased in both number and complexity. A solution to this problem has been identified in sharing leadership and engaging the potential of entire organizations. Therefore the purpose of this literature review is to map and identify interesting areas about shared leadership. Investigating if shared leadership can help organisations become more efficient in a world of growing complexity. Focusing on why organisational actors should consider a shared leadership approach. Critically examine the potential outcome from shared leadership and how an organisation could move towards adopting a shared leadership approach, including steps, conditions and actions that would be required. Literature about shared leadership and similar concepts has increased extensively, causing dissension in the area. Aiming to explore, understand and express what the literature says about shared leadership we adopted the systems view with an inductive and qualitative approach. Realising that shared leadership most commonly is practiced and studied in teams we adopted this scope and went deeper into the social process and conditions for creating shared leadership in teams. Shared leadership was found to solve demands for increased knowledge, skill and ability among modern leaders. Preferably implemented successively by vertical leaders into cross-functional teams conducting knowledge work. Tasks to simple or time to urgent however makes shared leadership ineffective, while misaligned perceptions and purposes between team members might diminish trust and neglect shared leadership. This review then makes valuable implications for future research, suggesting deepened empirical research in the implication of shared leadership.

Abstract:
The trust for online vendors is something that is really important for e-commerce to function. For a long time the user interface has long been thought of as the main solution for solving the problem with unprofitable online stores. Even though a better usability for a online store will improve it and perhaps lead to some success. Usability will not alone be the one solution to the problems that a online store might have. However the low credibility for Web sites doesn't stop us from going online and making transactions with online vendors. In this thesis it is shown how a cross media concept could enhance the trustworthiness for e-commerce and online vendors. Based on the findings form two empirical studies and literature, four elements are presented that I believe would assist in making e- commerce feel more safe and secure.

Abstract:
Introduction Web Services is a relatively new concept to distributed data systems. It provides a new way for companies to easily integrate with other companies. With UDDI, companies are able to host their services in a wider market and also connect to other companies. However, with business expansion also follows trust issues. In order to share Web Services in a business partner relationship it is necessary to have a relation of trust. Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to investigate about this issue, i.e. how Web Services with the use of UDDI can be made as a “network of trust” and additionally obtain an idea about how the use of these two will look like in the future. The question of trust between partners sharing Web Services is still open. There has therefore been an interest to look at this problem. The aim for this thesis is to find possible solutions that can be used to address the problem. Method To investigate this we chose to do a literature study and continue with a survey consisted by interviews and questionnaires. Interviews were used to find which solutions that are available in reality and the questionnaires provide information about to what extent Web services and the found solutions are used. The questionnaire was done on random Swedish companies and was sent by e-mails. The interviews were done on two global Swedish companies, Volvo and Ericsson. This way information was found and could be compared in how the issue is dealt with in the literature and what is actually done in reality. Conclusion The outcome of the entire investigation is that Web Services today, even though it exists in most companies, is still in testing phase. As for this, the use of UDDI has had little attention and so has the issues regarding trust. The solution we found to the most applicable to create a network of trust is the Liberty Alliance Project. Web Services, UDDI, trust

The human body is a fascinatingly complex system of organs that work together in unison to create the functioning healthy human body with which we each are intimately familiar. To understand just a small specialized section of the body, some people seek out years of higher education in the form of an MD or PHD. Unfortunately the common person may never be exposed to even a fraction of that knowledge, leading to considerable misconceptions about physiology and health. Art is catchy medium that can encourage interest in physiology and medicine for the passerby more so than any textbook or college lecture could impart. My project involves developing a series of illustrative paintings highlighting each issue and pairing these with complementary essays detailing the basic science needed to understand the issue. Overall, my thesis will hopefully leave the viewer better informed about their body and share my own love of physiology and medicine with others.

Audio cues affect the experience both positive and negative, depending on other aspects as the possibility to escape the loud sound. Touch cues affect the experience mostly negative, which is possible to alter through interior and design. Scent cues are not affecting the industry as for the moment and there is a big gap to fill in here for the industry. Taste cues seem not to matter as much as the other cues. Trust is inflicting experience through expectation and fulfillment of promise. There is a weak (or least enough) correlation of trust and positive experience in nightclubs. Do business transactions between individuals of different ethnicities lead to social spillovers, in terms of building trust, friendship, and reducing prejudice? In this dissertation I interrogate that research question through a study of business transactions in four industries in Trinidad-print & packaging, food & beverages, construction, and consumer retail. I employ a mixed methods research design, which places emphasis on qualitative analysis of interview data, supplemented with quantitative analysis of that data-obtained from approximately 200 interviews plus 180 surveys. I find that business transactions do build trust and friendship between individuals, but tend not to lead to changes in individuals' wider social attitudes, particularly in terms of ethnic prejudices and opposition to intermarriage.

Abstract:
It has been well established, in the literature, the association between low health literacy rates and poor health outcomes. With the increase of technology dependence, more people are using the internet to look up health information. Research has shown that shared decision making between providers and patients can improve patients' health outcomes. This research aims to examine whether electronic health (eHealth) literacy impacts patient-provider relationships. This research will also examine how geography specifically state residency impacts eHealth literacy rates. Data collected from a national sampling of online health and medical information users who participated in the Study of Health and Medical Information in Cyberspace (N=710) is used to construct structural equation models from SPSS AMOS v. 20.0. After path analysis, the results shown that white males with higher education were more likely to have higher eHealth literacy rates and that eHealth literacy rates are associated with better self-care, higher patient satisfaction and increased trust in provider. Also, state residency does not have an impact on eHealth literacy rates. eHealth literacy will be significant in patient-provider relationships. Program development should be established on focusing on eHealth literacy across the lifespan. Also, it will be important to review federal policy on technology disbursements in order to achieve national goals on eHealth literacy rates.

Abstract:
In a world where technological progress is constant, understanding the views and experiences of users is essential. With the use of technology, there are many dangers. Issues with privacy and security are among them. This thesis deals with understanding the perception of privacy and security of smart home IoT devices. The literature review consists of understanding concepts of trust, possible ways of intrusion, and prevention and elaborating more about the Internet of Things technology and smart homes. The review also contains notes on previous findings of the user's perception. The review of the literature also connects possible ways of intrusion with the underlying IoT architecture as well as explains notions of privacy by design, compliance, and GDPR. To understand the phenomenon of privacy and security in the context of a smart home, a simple qualitative study was conducted. Sixteen participants who are part of the general public were interviewed. The collected information was analyzed using a general inductive approach, and answers were grouped into categories as suggested by Thematic Analysis. Interviews were done online and a transcript summary can be found in the last Appendix. The findings from the interviews suggest that privacy and convenience matter most to the users. Participants demonstrated a willingness to purchase if they perceived a device as something that will increase their quality of life and were willing to share data such as location but they were not willing to lose anonymity. What type of data and for what purpose was mentioned as most important. When it comes to security attacks, participants were less worried about how it might happen and more worried about what might happen to them and what are the consequences for them. In the conclusion of the study, I present advice for students and academia, device manufacturers, and service providers as well as the general public as the last main stakeholder. Since technology is not static, it would be of importance to revisit topics of privacy and security of IoT.

Abstract:
The number of connected Internet of Things devices are expected to surpass 30 billion in 2020. The unprecedented levels of personal data sharing are drastically increasing the complexity of privacy challenges. This kindled efforts such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), that came into effect in May 2018 to establish user data rights. These new user data rights have had a considerable impact both for the users, and the data controllers & third-parties that are liable to effectuate the new requirements, such as privacy-by-design and explicit consent. In this thesis, we explore this impact of the GDPR, specifically on self-disclosure of personal data through smart home devices, in order to gain insights for smart home practitioners. In doing so, we specifically want to answer two research questions. Our first research question helps us understand opinions and attitudes, specifically those of Swedish residents. An online survey helps us understand their willingness and fears of adopting smart home devices. In our second research question, we apply a semi-Systematic Literature Review to study how the GDPR has influenced self-disclosure through smart home devices, and which factors have had the most significant effect on its users. The survey (n=131) showed that while trust towards data controllers is the cumulatively highest priority of users, consistent product & service quality was more likely to be the first priority (28%). Some users are struggling to find usefulness for smart home devices, so the perceived benefit is currently mainly exceeding the cost and perceived risk for lead adopters. Since the GDPR came into effect, we have seen a raise in user awareness and perceived control. Notably, this led to increased skepticism towards smart home devices. The literature review showed promise in systems to help negotiate and suggest privacy preferences between users and data controllers. We also found an exacerbation of the concern for information privacy and that trust is a major factor for users when deciding to adopt smart home devices. We conclude that there are some factors that are more important than others, as well as provide insights for smart home practitioners on future venues for research and prototyping.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to explore food safety as part of Home and consumer studies (HCS) education in Swedish compulsory school. Firstly, a nationwide web-based questionnaire was performed among HCS teachers to obtain an overall picture of their knowledge, behaviour and attitudes regarding food safety.  The second study was a questionnaire among school Year 9 students, where the data were collected using a student response system. The questions were related to the students’ food safety knowledge and behaviour, as well as cooking habits and sources of food safety knowledge and trust. Finally, qualitative interviews were performed among HCS teachers regarding their didactic choices of teaching content. The results indicated a routine behaviour connected to cleaning practices and teaching regarding different perishable food to differ between teachers. The students’ food safety knowledge and behaviour were reported to be inadequate, especially among boys, and that students might leave school without having learnt even basic food safety principles. Mothers and thereby the home were reported to be an important as well as a trusted source of food safety knowledge, especially among the girls. Boys reported HCS to also be an important as well as trusted source, especially students that rarely or never reported to cook at home. For those students HCS must be seen as particularly valuable. To increase the students’ learning, the teaching needs to be related to the students’ everyday practices and to be more reflective in order for it to be practiced outside the HCS classroom. The teachers’ didactic choices could imply consequences for the students’ food safety learning and a need for more education and updated information for the teachers was noticed. In summary, the results indicate that risk areas related to all the Four Cs in Food safety (Cooking, Cleaning, Chilling and avoidance of Cross-contamination) need to be highlighted in HCS teaching and for food safety to become a conscious didactic choice for the teachers.  As teaching regarding food safety in HCS seem to differ it needs to be highlighted in HCS policy documents to ensure equivalent food safety learning for all students in compulsory school.

This paper studies managerial behavior in inter-firm supply chain relationships. I first answer two questions: When a firm outsources to a 3PL, a firm that provide multiple logistics services for use by customers, what is the impact on the managerial functions that the outsourcing firm carries out on an ongoing basis? How do the managerial functions impact the relationship of managerial competence on supply chain performance? These questions are answered via the examination of a sample of companies operating in the US and international markets who purchase services from 3PL providers. I find that the ongoing management of outsourcing partially mediates the relationship of managerial competence on supply chain performance. The higher the managerial competence, the less time spent managing established outsourcing relationships. This negative association holds, whether the firm does or does not employ the services of a 4PL, a firm that organizes 3rd party logistics providers. This study also finds that of the managerial functions of planning, coordinating, leading, educating, and monitoring, that only monitoring is significant with respect to managerial competence levels. Managerial units with moderate or high competence levels are about two times as likely to monitor their relationships with their 3PL providers, as managerial units with lower competence levels. Supply chain managers concentrate their monitoring efforts on client/provider relationships, based upon their view of these relationships. The managerial units with moderate or high competence levels are two times as likely to monitor when they have a least favorable view, as opposed to when they have a moderate or more favorable view. The supply chain managers who measure lower in competence make no such adjustment in time spent monitoring their client's performance, regardless of their view of the client/provider relationships. The findings just discussed spurred two additional studies in which I explore and test the importance of trust in collaborative supply chain relationships (CSCRs). The first is done via 19 semi-structured interviews with supply chain managers, while the second utilizes 50 surveys. Particular attention was paid to assessing only those managers in collaborative, as opposed to arms-length relationships. From the results of the interviews I provide a taxonomy for understanding trust signals in new CSCRs. I also obtain a number of thick descriptions for understanding what constitutes psychological contract breach (PCB), the operational and relational expectations of the customer in the collaboration, and a contemporary view of the goals of supply chain collaboration. These results were incorporated into the scales utilized in the survey research and have been validated. In each of the two studies, I carry out hypothesis testing, which reveals that initial trust is important to decrease feelings of psychological contract breach, whether the respondent is the customer or the supplier to the relationship. However, in one case PCB is felt more strongly when the respondent speaks of his collaborative supplier for all levels of initial trust. In the other, it is felt more strongly in reference to the customer, given higher levels of initial trust. Once PCB has occurred, meeting operational expectations alone is not sufficient to instill feelings of goal achievement; meeting relational expectations is also required. Continuing on with PCB, I find that its magnitude and established trust are important factors in the extension of continued trust and future collaborative intentions. For all magnitudes of PCB, the higher the established trust, the higher the subsequent trust up to a tipping point, at which point trust diminishes. Intentions to remain in the collaborative relationship, additionally, are subject to a tipping point. Last but not least, I establish an association between the importance of trust and the just distribution of rewards. By examining the payoff structures of actual supply chain collaborations, however, I find that rewards are not always shared equally. My research makes a unique internally-focused contribution to the literature. It looks at a firm's supply chain managerial unit as a driver of firm performance in outsourcing relationships. Additionally, it looks at the process the managerial units goes through in extending initial trust to a collaborative partner, how it moves beyond any psychological contract breaches that might occur, and the rewards the collaborative partner receives as an outcome of the collaborative effort.

Huddy, Shannon. "Vulnerability in the classroom| How undergraduate business instructors' ability to build trust impacts the student's learning experience." Thesis, Pepperdine University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10163664.

Full text
Abstract:

Vulnerability is the ability to risk emotional exposure, chance making a mistake, or disclose personal information because the outcome is viewed as favorable. Vulnerability is a highly effective way to build trust with others. Trust is a valued leadership trait within corporate business because it encourages employees to take risks, share information, and ultimately become more effective and productive (Robbins & Judge, 2013). This paper explores the practicing of vulnerability in college-level business classrooms to appropriately prepare business students to become leaders who are able to build trust within the workplace.

To further understand vulnerability in the classroom and develop a preliminary operational definition of the complex construct of vulnerability, a mixed methods research study was conducted at Sierra Nevada College that included a two-stage factor analysis followed by short interviews with instructors to gain further insight into the data collected. First, students from four randomly selected business classrooms were asked to participate in a study by completing a survey with 18 variables that describe vulnerable, productive teaching techniques. Then, the same survey was distributed to the five classrooms of instructors who were nominated for the 2014 or 2015 Nazir and Mary Ansari Excellence in Teaching Gold Medal award or Teacher of the Year award. The four Nazir and Mary Ansari Excellence in Teaching Gold Metal award candidates and the Teacher of the Year were interviewed for 30-minutes to provide insight and commentary on the findings from the first round of surveys. The goal of this study is to create a preliminary operational definition of the construct of “vulnerable teaching techniques” and to have an assessment tool to further understand vulnerability in a classroom setting.

Chmielewska, Katarzyna. "In Martha We Trust? The Cultural Significance of the Martha Stewart Phenomenon." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2003. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc4267/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis examines the relationship between Martha Stewart's rendition of domesticity and a broader cultural trend of the late 1990s U.S. domestic retreatism. It argues that the mode of construction and representation of the "domestic dream" in Stewart's programs cannot be examined outside of such concepts as class and ethnicity, whose understanding depends on the cultural, social, and political context of a given era, a context, in which they become transparent as aspects of the Western (white, patriarchal) status quo. Performing a deconstructive reading of these categories as employed by Stewart in the process of creation of her media persona, the thesis examines what the negative as well as positive reactions to "Martha Stewart" convey about the condition of American society of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Abstract:
Background: Nurses have historically cared for individuals injured in combat. One field of operations for nurses today is to participate in missions abroad where they may care for individuals injured in combat. To be injured in combat might be perceived as a traumatic event which challenges an individual's experience of comfort, trust and hope. Nursing literature emphasizes the importance of nurses’ ability to support a patient’s experience of comfort, trust and hope. Purpose: To describe how nurses perceive that they support a patient's experience of comfort, trust and hope during emergency care of injury in combat. Method: An empirical study with a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out using semi-structured interviews and was processed using a qualitative content analysis. Results: The perception of comfort is perceived by the informants as supported by pain management, information, security, knowledge, experience, a structured course of action, calm, presence and physical contact. The perception of the informants is that trust is supported by understanding, empathy, authenticity, trusting relationship and control. Hope is perceived as supported by participation, honesty, information, and treatment of life-threatening conditions. Conclusion: Factors perceived to support comfort, trust and hope can be identified as the nurse´s approach and active measures. The result indicates that single actions are perceived supporting several vital needs simultaneously and can be understood as interlinked. Clinical significance: This study may be relevant to nurses who aim to support patients' experiences of comfort, trust and hope. This description of the lived experiences can inspire and support other nurses in health care.

Parents are the primary educators of their children and the consistent teachers throughout their lives. However, with raised expectations through curriculum state standards and high stakes testing for students, teachers and schools, families are being left behind. A particular turning point in students' education is during the middle school years when intellectual, character, social and emotional transitions occur and habits are formed. Therefore, this qualitative, single case study uses data sources of interviews, observations and artifacts to determine the appropriate role of parents at the middle school level as perceived by administrators, teachers with administrative duties, teachers and parents. Additionally, this research sought to determine the unique factors that impede more effective partnerships between home and school and analyze the current situation using the sociocultural theory to determine if beliefs and values match the social structures in place at this particular school and provide implications for practice. Findings reveal the parent role is defined by consistent communication between home and school for unified adult expectations. Unique factors impeding parent participation at this level are based on this particular age of the students. Using sociocultural theory, it is evident that the school community culture prevails over individual beliefs and is impeded by two underlying sub cultures of rationalizations and assumptions, which allow participation to remain infrequent. There are additional overarching issues discussed that go beyond sociocultural theory. Finally, recommendations for practice are made for this particular school and the middle school level

Smith, Matthew. "Confianza a la Chilena : a comparative study of how e-services influence public sector institutional trustworthiness and trust." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2007. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/603/.

Abstract:
New information and communication technologies bring the enticing potential to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and transparency of government administration and services. One theorised outcome of egovernment that has received little empirical attention is its ability to build citizens’ trust in government. This thesis contributes to this knowledge through a comparative study of the impacts of two Chilean e-services on citizens’ trust in the institutions of democratic government. This research traces the causal processes from the influence of the e-services on the trustworthiness of public sector institutions to how, for whom, and in what circumstances the e-services directly affect citizens’ trust in those institutions. The research approach draws from social realist assumptions and, in particular, the ontology offered by critical realism. This approach allows for the development of a novel e-government and institutional trust framework that integrates a wide range of trust theories from political science, sociology, psychology, and information systems. Extending the framework, the thesis proposes fifteen middle-range causal hypotheses that link e-services to institutional trustworthiness and citizens’ trust in those institutions. These hypotheses are then empirically grounded in casespecific hypotheses which are subsequently tested and refined through both a within-case analysis and cross-case comparison. Within limits, this study provides insight into the potentials and limits of e-government to improve the trustworthiness of the public sector. Furthermore, by adopting a street-level epistemological perspective of citizens’ interpretations and explanations of e-service interactions, the thesis contributes to the micro-level understanding of the interactions of eservices and citizens’ trust in public sector institutions. A central finding is the importance of self-interested concerns and direct user benefits in shaping perceptions and interpretations of the citizen-e-service interaction. The findings also provide empirical insight into the theoretical and practical importance of discerning between theories of how to build trustworthy institutions and trust in those institutions.

Abstract:

As a request from our supervisor, the authors were introduced to Company XY which is standing on the verge of becoming a market player. After discussion, the authors came up with the idea of how to enable the first business transaction which became the research of this study.

The purpose of this dissertation is to explore and explain how a business with no previous business transactions completed could enter a market where the competition, assumedly, are tough due to few competitors fighting for the same customers and enable customers to purchase. To be able to conduct an in-depth analysis, the research is made with a qualitative approach. Due to the amount of previous research the deductive approach is adopted.

The theoretical review ended up in the creation of the Five Stage Process which contains five stages of how to establish a relationship and in the end enable the first business transaction. To be able to determine the relevance of the process six propositions were created.

Interviews were made at the dental school of Malmö University and at the dental hygienist school at Kristianstad University. The finding from the empirical study indicates that the theoretical assumption of the Five Stage Process might be a relevant way to describe how a company without any previous business transactions completed and with few market connections enables their first business transaction.

Abstract:
The Swedish public bus transport sector is showing a negative development as costs are escalating and the number of passengers is stagnating. Based on theories in Public-Private Partnerships and inter-organizational cooperation, this paper presents an exploratory study how the cooperation between public and private actors affects the quality of public bus transport. Evidence shows that the negative development in the sector is mainly due to the nature of the contracts between public and private actors. Despite the contracts, two of four cases have increased their quality and public welfare through cooperation between the actors. The results highlight the importance of customizing the cooperation based on each actors´ driving force in the contract. Additionally are detailed goal setting and a clear inter-organizational structure strongly correlating with increased quality, finally is trust identified as a corner stone for the construction of a successful cooperation.
