Full textOnline trust has been cited as one of the most important reasons as to why someone choose to participate in e-commerce. The main research goal in this thesis is to explore the concept of online trust in e-commerce, how it is formed and by extension how it can be designed for. This thesis considers the research question “How can e-commerce websites be designed to be trust-inducing?”. First a literature study on the background of trust research was performed and the underlying factors of trust and the design elements that affect the formation of trust mapped out. Then popular Swedish e-commerce websites were investigated and design patterns were mapped out based on those websites. Based on previous research and the experience gained from these websites, 13 guidelines with focus on trust-inducing e-commerce design were created. To test the usefulness of the guidelines, analyses of websites using the guidelines were performed, as well as expert evaluations of websites by six of the authors peers. Overall this study found that the design of the websites that were investigated was lacking in customer service, third-party certifications and social-cue design in general. The thesis contributes to better website trust design by putting forth guidelines. The knowledge gained from the analyses of websites is a contribution in itself since it provides an understanding of how well e-commerce websites design for trust and which are the most common design issues.

Full textThe digitization of the home makes automated systems more common in our everyday lives. The home, which used to be a private and personal place, now becomes a center for digital devices, which in itself creates new technological opportunities. The smart home is one of these opportunities as it offers the user safety and security while the units in the home can help us with both daily problems and long-term challenges. An autonomous unit in a home environment can do everything from controlling music to keeping track of energy consumption. The common denominator the autonomous units have is that people take them into their homes; their private sphere, therefore, the question we ask ourselves becomes the following: How does a user build trust against autonomous units in a home environment?

Although research on interorganizational trust and its relationship with performance has been conducted for a long time and through Transaction Cost Economics, Social Exchange Theory and Marketing Channels, three gaps were found in the literature to be explored. First, there is an ongoing debate around three conceptual streams on the multidimensionality of trust and how it should be operationalized and measured - as a multidimensional construct defined by non dominant dimensions, a construct based on two dominant dimensions (affective and calculative), or as a single dimensional construct. Second, there is still some ambiguity in how the dimensions of trust have been defined and operationalized, leading to artifacts of measurement equivalence and contradicting results. Third, the different perceptions that buyers and suppliers may have in each dimension of trust and its consequence to logistics performance is still unclear. This research examines trust in buyer-supplier relationship in one empirical study with two independent samples in the logistics sector in Brazil: one examines buyers‘ perceptions and the second examines suppliers‘ perceptions. The two studies are then compared in order to determine the different perceptions of trust and implications to logistics performance. Multivariate analysis show that trust seems to be present in interorganizational relationships, and is the buyer´s perception of trust on the supplier that has a stronger relationship with logistics performance. At the same time, buyers have a more negative perception of suppliers in measurable dimensions of trust (competence and performance), while no differences were found in social aspects of trust (honesty and benevolence), and this may be a result of environment and cultural characteristics. Data analysis showed that trust can be defined as a multi-dimensional construct but should be measured as a single-dimensional construct driven by competence and credibility. This study contributes to practice by suggesting how managers could better leverage interorganizational trust to improve logistics performance.

How should organizations react to nowadays working context? Should employees’ behavioural surveillance be embraced and adopted by companies? What could be the implications of these practices? This study, based on an input-process-output model, seeks to investigate how monitoring employees may affect their attitudes towards the organization, more in specific, the focus will be on one variable: workers’ trust towards the organization. The research further proposes to determine whether the four organizational justice constructs significantly moderate the relationship between perceived monitoring and organizational trust. This research applied a quantitative research method, consisting of the analysis of responses obtained to a previously developed survey. Regression analysis was used in order to understand the relationship between monitoring in the workplace and trust towards the organization and to clarify the role played by the four dimensions of organizational justice. Inconsistently with the hypotheses developed, the results indicate that monitoring employees cannot be considered a factor, which negatively impacts the trust towards the organization. Likewise, the organizational justice domain does not significantly moderate this relationship: the four different organizational justice constructs reported statistically insignificant scores of interaction on the main relationship. Finally, the implications of the results are discussed with respect to clarifying possible explanation for the obtained outcomes and propose solutions to improve future studies in this area.

Do business transactions between individuals of different ethnicities lead to social spillovers, in terms of building trust, friendship, and reducing prejudice? In this dissertation I interrogate that research question through a study of business transactions in four industries in Trinidad-print & packaging, food & beverages, construction, and consumer retail. I employ a mixed methods research design, which places emphasis on qualitative analysis of interview data, supplemented with quantitative analysis of that data-obtained from approximately 200 interviews plus 180 surveys. I find that business transactions do build trust and friendship between individuals, but tend not to lead to changes in individuals' wider social attitudes, particularly in terms of ethnic prejudices and opposition to intermarriage.

This paper studies managerial behavior in inter-firm supply chain relationships. I first answer two questions: When a firm outsources to a 3PL, a firm that provide multiple logistics services for use by customers, what is the impact on the managerial functions that the outsourcing firm carries out on an ongoing basis? How do the managerial functions impact the relationship of managerial competence on supply chain performance? These questions are answered via the examination of a sample of companies operating in the US and international markets who purchase services from 3PL providers. I find that the ongoing management of outsourcing partially mediates the relationship of managerial competence on supply chain performance. The higher the managerial competence, the less time spent managing established outsourcing relationships. This negative association holds, whether the firm does or does not employ the services of a 4PL, a firm that organizes 3rd party logistics providers. This study also finds that of the managerial functions of planning, coordinating, leading, educating, and monitoring, that only monitoring is significant with respect to managerial competence levels. Managerial units with moderate or high competence levels are about two times as likely to monitor their relationships with their 3PL providers, as managerial units with lower competence levels. Supply chain managers concentrate their monitoring efforts on client/provider relationships, based upon their view of these relationships. The managerial units with moderate or high competence levels are two times as likely to monitor when they have a least favorable view, as opposed to when they have a moderate or more favorable view. The supply chain managers who measure lower in competence make no such adjustment in time spent monitoring their client's performance, regardless of their view of the client/provider relationships. The findings just discussed spurred two additional studies in which I explore and test the importance of trust in collaborative supply chain relationships (CSCRs). The first is done via 19 semi-structured interviews with supply chain managers, while the second utilizes 50 surveys. Particular attention was paid to assessing only those managers in collaborative, as opposed to arms-length relationships. From the results of the interviews I provide a taxonomy for understanding trust signals in new CSCRs. I also obtain a number of thick descriptions for understanding what constitutes psychological contract breach (PCB), the operational and relational expectations of the customer in the collaboration, and a contemporary view of the goals of supply chain collaboration. These results were incorporated into the scales utilized in the survey research and have been validated. In each of the two studies, I carry out hypothesis testing, which reveals that initial trust is important to decrease feelings of psychological contract breach, whether the respondent is the customer or the supplier to the relationship. However, in one case PCB is felt more strongly when the respondent speaks of his collaborative supplier for all levels of initial trust. In the other, it is felt more strongly in reference to the customer, given higher levels of initial trust. Once PCB has occurred, meeting operational expectations alone is not sufficient to instill feelings of goal achievement; meeting relational expectations is also required. Continuing on with PCB, I find that its magnitude and established trust are important factors in the extension of continued trust and future collaborative intentions. For all magnitudes of PCB, the higher the established trust, the higher the subsequent trust up to a tipping point, at which point trust diminishes. Intentions to remain in the collaborative relationship, additionally, are subject to a tipping point. Last but not least, I establish an association between the importance of trust and the just distribution of rewards. By examining the payoff structures of actual supply chain collaborations, however, I find that rewards are not always shared equally. My research makes a unique internally-focused contribution to the literature. It looks at a firm's supply chain managerial unit as a driver of firm performance in outsourcing relationships. Additionally, it looks at the process the managerial units goes through in extending initial trust to a collaborative partner, how it moves beyond any psychological contract breaches that might occur, and the rewards the collaborative partner receives as an outcome of the collaborative effort.

Full textVulnerability is the ability to risk emotional exposure, chance making a mistake, or disclose personal information because the outcome is viewed as favorable. Vulnerability is a highly effective way to build trust with others. Trust is a valued leadership trait within corporate business because it encourages employees to take risks, share information, and ultimately become more effective and productive (Robbins & Judge, 2013). This paper explores the practicing of vulnerability in college-level business classrooms to appropriately prepare business students to become leaders who are able to build trust within the workplace.
To further understand vulnerability in the classroom and develop a preliminary operational definition of the complex construct of vulnerability, a mixed methods research study was conducted at Sierra Nevada College that included a two-stage factor analysis followed by short interviews with instructors to gain further insight into the data collected. First, students from four randomly selected business classrooms were asked to participate in a study by completing a survey with 18 variables that describe vulnerable, productive teaching techniques. Then, the same survey was distributed to the five classrooms of instructors who were nominated for the 2014 or 2015 Nazir and Mary Ansari Excellence in Teaching Gold Medal award or Teacher of the Year award. The four Nazir and Mary Ansari Excellence in Teaching Gold Metal award candidates and the Teacher of the Year were interviewed for 30-minutes to provide insight and commentary on the findings from the first round of surveys. The goal of this study is to create a preliminary operational definition of the construct of “vulnerable teaching techniques” and to have an assessment tool to further understand vulnerability in a classroom setting.

Full textBackground: Nurses have historically cared for individuals injured in combat. One field of operations for nurses today is to participate in missions abroad where they may care for individuals injured in combat. To be injured in combat might be perceived as a traumatic event which challenges an individual's experience of comfort, trust and hope. Nursing literature emphasizes the importance of nurses’ ability to support a patient’s experience of comfort, trust and hope. Purpose: To describe how nurses perceive that they support a patient's experience of comfort, trust and hope during emergency care of injury in combat. Method: An empirical study with a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out using semi-structured interviews and was processed using a qualitative content analysis. Results: The perception of comfort is perceived by the informants as supported by pain management, information, security, knowledge, experience, a structured course of action, calm, presence and physical contact. The perception of the informants is that trust is supported by understanding, empathy, authenticity, trusting relationship and control. Hope is perceived as supported by participation, honesty, information, and treatment of life-threatening conditions. Conclusion: Factors perceived to support comfort, trust and hope can be identified as the nurse´s approach and active measures. The result indicates that single actions are perceived supporting several vital needs simultaneously and can be understood as interlinked. Clinical significance: This study may be relevant to nurses who aim to support patients' experiences of comfort, trust and hope. Full textParents are the primary educators of their children and the consistent teachers throughout their lives. However, with raised expectations through curriculum state standards and high stakes testing for students, teachers and schools, families are being left behind. A particular turning point in students' education is during the middle school years when intellectual, character, social and emotional transitions occur and habits are formed. Therefore, this qualitative, single case study uses data sources of interviews, observations and artifacts to determine the appropriate role of parents at the middle school level as perceived by administrators, teachers with administrative duties, teachers and parents. Additionally, this research sought to determine the unique factors that impede more effective partnerships between home and school and analyze the current situation using the sociocultural theory to determine if beliefs and values match the social structures in place at this particular school and provide implications for practice. Findings reveal the parent role is defined by consistent communication between home and school for unified adult expectations. Unique factors impeding parent participation at this level are based on this particular age of the students. Using sociocultural theory, it is evident that the school community culture prevails over individual beliefs and is impeded by two underlying sub cultures of rationalizations and assumptions, which allow participation to remain infrequent. There are additional overarching issues discussed that go beyond sociocultural theory. Finally, recommendations for practice are made for this particular school and the middle school level

Full textAs a request from our supervisor, the authors were introduced to Company XY which is standing on the verge of becoming a market player. After discussion, the authors came up with the idea of how to enable the first business transaction which became the research of this study.
The purpose of this dissertation is to explore and explain how a business with no previous business transactions completed could enter a market where the competition, assumedly, are tough due to few competitors fighting for the same customers and enable customers to purchase. To be able to conduct an in-depth analysis, the research is made with a qualitative approach. Due to the amount of previous research the deductive approach is adopted.
The theoretical review ended up in the creation of the Five Stage Process which contains five stages of how to establish a relationship and in the end enable the first business transaction. To be able to determine the relevance of the process six propositions were created.
Interviews were made at the dental school of Malmö University and at the dental hygienist school at Kristianstad University. The finding from the empirical study indicates that the theoretical assumption of the Five Stage Process might be a relevant way to describe how a company without any previous business transactions completed and with few market connections enables their first business transaction.
