Abstract:

This thesis includes NMR studies of free base meso-tetra(otolyl) porphyrin (TTP) and meso -tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) and their dications protonated by trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). The chemical shift changes of the -NH resonance are very unusual and have never been reported. At the beginning of the titration, the N-H resonances broaden considerably but do not shift; when the ratio of [TFA]/[TTP] or [TFA]/[TPPf are over 2, the N-H resonances shift markedly to lower field by as much as 1.6 ppm. At acid levels well above the equivalence point, the NH resonances moves back to higher field. Moreover

2,2',3,5',6-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB95) is a chiral congener of the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) family of PCBs. It has been shown that chiral PCBs can be enantioselectively transformed into hydroxylated metabolites by cytochrome P450 in animals. Previous studies in our group suggested that PCB 95 can be enantioselectively translocated and metabolized in whole poplar plants. This thesis describes the isolation and structure elucidation of ten novel secondary metabolites from one fungus (Pycnoporus cinnabarinus), four lichens (Chrysothrix xanthina, Candelaria concolor, Ramalina glaucescens and Xanthoria parietina), three algae (Plocamium mertensii, Laurencia filiformis and Laurencia elata), two plants (Haemodorum simplex and Dianella callicarpa) and one sponge (Dactylospongia sp).
