This paper aims to research the life history and painting creations of Pan Jy-Hrong, the “sunshine painter” based in southern Taiwan. The study examines the painter’s life, his background from which his painting style is formed, his creative concepts and style developments and also divides the above into different stages and analyzes each stage. To achieve the purpose described above, this paper uses historical research method, interviews and style modeling research method. Pan attracted polio when he was nine months old. The disease left him to move around by crawling until he gained the ability to stand and walk after receiving surgery in fifth grade. In third grade, he drew a picture of Bodhisattva and earned the praise of his father. After that, he became dedicated to becoming an artist. Before entering the National School of Arts, Pan studied under Chen Chu-Shi and Ho Wen-Chi. During his studies at the school, he became greatly influenced by the styles of Lai Wu-Hsiung. In addition, he was attracted to the Dutch painter Rembrandt’s use of light and shadow, and developed a passion for catching that illuminating light. Pan’s creative concept was to communicate through the “truth” of a realistic style and by emptying and dedicating himself, to come up with ideas speaking to the “goodness” in this heart. He created pieces of great depth, reflecting the “beauty” felt by his soul and expressing spiritual meanings and emotions enriched in him. Pan’s style of painting can be divided into three development stages. The first stage is his young adult period (1978-1990), during which he received art education at the National School of Arts and developed an academic style of art. The second stage is his adult period (1991-2000). After having his own family and children, his themes were mostly focused on his daughter during this period. The third stage is his middle age period (2001-2014). This is when he fully flourished, creating numerous pieces with high artistry while depicting a wide variety of themes fusing the best of eastern and western techniques. Characteristics of his painting style can be summarized as the following: His subject matters are chosen from the surrounding people, events and objects, showing his care for nature and the countryside. His composition is balanced with depth and a sense of space. His tones are bright and refreshing using many warm sunshine colors. The lines are smooth and rich in rhythm which brings out the subtlety of the objects. He mainly uses techniques such as rendering method, overlapping method and suture method. Although Pan was restricted physically, he was always determined to bring out the truth, goodness and beauty in life. His personality was sincere and humble and he cherished and gave thanks to his blessings. His brush painted the beauty he saw and his soul rendered the love and light in him. Pan was not only an artists, art educator, and writer, but also a sunshine painter filled with life.
