ABSTRACT We have identified and cloned a mutant allele of the small heat shock gene Hsp28 of Drosophila melanogaster. This allele, which we have called Hsp28stl, produces small amounts of a single aberrantly large, heat-inducible transcript in heat-shocked flies, while a normal-sized Hsp28 transcript is present only in fertile females. No Hsp28 transcript at all is detected in mutant prepupae, a stage when wild-type flies show high levels of Hsp28 RNA. We have cloned the Hsp28stl allele, and have found that a 1.3-kb defective P-element is present 5' to Hsp28 in the mutant line. The site of P-e

The current bridge formula, Federal Bridge Formula B (BFB), established in 1974 to protect bridges against excessive overstress, is very restrictive on long combination vehicles due to an 80,000 lb gross vehicle weight limit. Without this limit the formula will not be able to protect bridges in the cases of longer trucks. A formula developed by the Texas Transportation Institute (T.T.I.) called the TTI-HS20 Formula addresses these issues. This formula, developed especially for bridges designed for the HS-20 truck, eliminates the need for the 80,000 lb limit. A generic formula developed to prot

I consider how small disturbances in landscape systems can have transformative effects and apply this thinking to how small disturbances might catalyse engagement. The study is g

This thesis asks: how are megaprojects legitimated, with civil society seen as a source of the legitimacy that state and market institutions often lack. Civil society is conceived as a political realm in which decisions are challenged and in which there is also public deliberation of the issues decisions generate. With civil society organisations (CSOs) increasingly seen by policy-makers as a means of delivering public goods the role of civil society is changing. In order to reflect this change a broader concept of civil society is developed within this thesis. This, in turn, contributes to th

Abstract:
There is an increasing interest in development of manufacturing methods for Dual Property BLISKs, consisting of creep resistant airfoils and fatigue resistant disks bonded together by a durable joint. Optimum heat treatments are, however, very different for creep resistant single crystal CMSX-4 and fatigue resistant poly-crystalline Udimet 720 selected in this study, but fortunately the first ageing treatment for CMSX-4 (1140°C, 2–6h, AC) is similar to the partial solution treatment of U 720 HS2 (1115°C, 4h, OQ). Based on this, diffusion bonding was performed by HIP at 1120°C and 200 MPa argon
