Contractor, Yateesh Jaykishan. "Evaluation of a new bridge formula for regulation of truck weights." Texas A&M University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/2551.

Full text
Abstract:
The current bridge formula, Federal Bridge Formula B (BFB), established in 1974 to protect bridges against excessive overstress, is very restrictive on long combination vehicles due to an 80,000 lb gross vehicle weight limit. Without this limit the formula will not be able to protect bridges in the cases of longer trucks. A formula developed by the Texas Transportation Institute (T.T.I.) called the TTI-HS20 Formula addresses these issues. This formula, developed especially for bridges designed for the HS-20 truck, eliminates the need for the 80,000 lb limit. A generic formula developed to prot

Phillips, Joanne. "An emergent methodology for public engagement in the rural landscapes of HS2." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2018. http://e-space.mmu.ac.uk/622360/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes the concept of cascading public engagement as a desirable condition in which public engagement with landscape expands and deepens in a self-sustaining way, through continually evolving interconnectedness of landscape processes. Emergence theory is applied and tested as the methodology for the research and also as the strategic foundation for the proposed approach to engaging people with landscape. I consider how small disturbances in landscape systems can have transformative effects and apply this thinking to how small disturbances might catalyse engagement. The study is g

The human beta-globin LCR is a tissue-specific enhancer composed of 4 major erythroid-specific DNaseI hypersensitive sites (HS 1 to 4). The beta-globin LCR has previously been reported to confer high-level, position independent expression onto globin transgenes. Each HS has been shown to have some enhancer activity individually; however, there is evidence that they may work by different mechanisms. In this study, we have explored this possibility by assessing what type of position effects arise in individual clones having integrated either muLCR, HS2 or HS3 linked to the human beta-glob

Abstract:
This thesis asks: how are megaprojects legitimated, with civil society seen as a source of the legitimacy that state and market institutions often lack. Civil society is conceived as a political realm in which decisions are challenged and in which there is also public deliberation of the issues decisions generate. With civil society organisations (CSOs) increasingly seen by policy-makers as a means of delivering public goods the role of civil society is changing. In order to reflect this change a broader concept of civil society is developed within this thesis. This, in turn, contributes to th

Micro and nanofabrication technologies have been used extensively in many biomedical and biological applications. Integration of MEMS technology and biology (BioMEMS) enables precise control of the cellular microenvironments and offers high throughput systems. The focus of this research was to develop three dimensional (3-D) isotropic microstructures for comprehensive analysis on cell-substrate interactions. The aim was to investigate whether the normal and cancerous cells differentially respond to their underlying substrate and whether the differential response of the cells leads to a novel l
