Gallant, Lauren Rachel. "Using Natural Archives to Reconstruct Environmental Changes Caused by Human Activities." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/40386.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this thesis was to develop new approaches and perspectives in resolving historical information from natural archives. Paleolimnology, the study of past aquatic environments using lake sediment cores, has greatly advanced our understanding of previous environments. This thesis intended to expand the range of historical information that may be used in paleolimnology and for historical reconstructions. Here I used pond sediments and a bat guano deposit as natural archives that recorded a history of events that I interpreted using a combination of chemical and biological measurements. In particular, I applied sterols and stanols as novel approaches for interpreting historical information in natural archives. First, I examined the chemical and biological composition of lake sediments to track the human occupation of Dorset and Thule people in Canada’s High Arctic. As predicted, sterols, stanols, cadmium, copper, and zinc increased in sediments deposited during known periods of human occupation owing to nutrient addition, whereas these increases were absent in reference sites. These methods were further corroborated in a study of 20th century human occupation at Resolute Bay by examining similar constituents in waterbodies that received wastewater discharge. Second, I used δ15N and δ13C to track the agricultural history of Jamaica using a 4,300-year-old bat guano deposit. I then used C/N, δ13C, and sterol and stanol ratios to detect two periods of increased frugivory relative to insectivory-based foraging. Metals normalized to titanium increased during the Industrial Revolution and 206Pb/207Pb values tracked the introduction and subsequent ban of leaded gasoline. I also examined the same chemical constituents in fresh bat guano from frugivorous, insectivorous, and sanguinivorous bats. C/N values decreased and cholestanol, cholesterol, and cholesterol/(cholesterol+sitosterol) values increased in bat guano according to trophic level. This thesis demonstrated the strength of examining several independent lines of evidence to reconstruct historical activities in both High Arctic waterbody sediments and a bat guano deposit. I showed that human activities were traceable within natural archives over several thousand years thus demonstrating that the multi-proxy approach is a powerful tool that can conduct a broad range of analyses in various natural archives.

Blechko, Anastassia. "The detection of concealed firearm carrying through CCTV : the role of affect recognition." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2011. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/9102.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aimed to explore whether the recognition of offenders with a concealed firearm by a human operator might be based on the recognition of affective (negative) state derived from non-verbal behaviour that is accessible from CCTV images. Since a firearm is concealed, it has been assumed that human observers would respond to subtle cues which individuals inherently produce whilst carrying a hidden firearm. These cues are believed to be reflected in the body language of those carrying firearms and might be apprehended by observers at a conscious or subconscious level. Another hypothesis is that the ability to recognize the carrier of concealed firearm in the CCTV footage might be affected by other factors, such as the skills in decoding an affective state of others and the viewpoint of observation of the surveillance targets. In order to give a theoretical and experimental basis for these hypotheses the first objective was to examine the extant literature to determine what is known about recognition of affect from non-verbal cues (e.g. facial expressions and body movement), and how it can be applied to the detection of human mal-intent. A second objective was to explore this subject in relation to the detection of concealed firearm carrying through performing a number of experimental studies. The studies employed experts, i.e. CCTV operators and mainly the lay people as participants. Also, various experimental techniques such as questionnaires and eye-tracking registration were used to investigate the topic. The results show that human observers seem to use visual indicators of affective state of surveillance targets to make a decision whether or not the individuals are carrying a concealed firearm. The most prominent cues were face, and upper body of surveillance targets, gait, posture and arm movements. The test of decoding ability did not show sufficient relationship with the ability to detect a concealed firearm bearer. The performance on the task might be view dependent. Further research into this topic will be needed to generate strategies that would support reliable detection of concealed firearm carrying through employing of related affective behavioural cues.

Lerga, Jaso Jon. "Integrative analysis of the functional consequences of inversions in the human genome." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/669344.

Full text
Abstract:
Structural variation contributes substantially to the genetic diversity, but its association with complex traits and diseases is not well understood and deserves detailed characterisation. This is particularly true for chromosomal inversions, whose functional consequences have remained elusive in humans, with very few notable exceptions. Despite the rising interest in identifying all types of genomic variants, inversions have been often set aside due to the presence of repetitive regions in their breakpoints along with their balanced nature. The InvFEST Project has tried to overcome this technical challenge by developing unique methods for inversion genotyping. Thanks to this effort, a total of 111 polymorphic human inversions have been accurately genotyped in a large number of individuals from diverse populations, becoming the most complete and reliable resource of this type of variation available to date. In the current era of precision medicine, quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis has emerged as a key approach to determine how genetic polymorphisms influence gene expression and, in turn, phenotypic traits. Thus, this thesis makes the most of the great amount of data generated to perform for the first time a systematic quantification of the functional impact of human polymorphic inversions. The results show that inversions can affect gene expression by maintaining differentiated haplotypes, disrupting or reorganizing gene structures, creating novel fusion transcripts or acting through changes in epigenetic patterns. Strikingly, half of the inversions analysed act as lead QTLs or are in high linkage disequilibrium (LD) with top QTLs for gene expression and epigenetic changes across different tissues and cell lines, which suggests that inversions are enriched for functional effects. In particular, this influence on molecular phenotypes is even stronger for long inversions (>100kb), which are involved in 80% of the QTL associations. Although structural variants are known to have a higher chance to be associated with expression levels and complex traits, the detected inversion effects may reflect a trade-off between beneficial expression changes and potential negative costs on fertility due to production of unbalanced gametes by recombination. Furthermore, inversions present an enrichment of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) signals in their surrounding area, and 14 of them are in high LD with trait-associated variants, supporting their potential implication in human phenotypes. Finally, the phenotypic consequences of two interesting inversions have been investigated in detail. HsInv0102 inverts an alternative non-coding exon from the RHOH gene. Interestingly, this inversion is also associated with RhoH protein levels and the inverted allele could act as a moderate protective locus on blood cancer susceptibility. On the other hand, HsInv0124 regulates the expression of several genes in the IFITM region, including IFITM2 and IFITM3, through changes in histone modification patterns. Moreover, under infection conditions, this inversion has a pervasive effect on the expression of genes related with immune response, indicating that it may play an important role in defense against viral infections. All together, these findings illustrate the potential functional impact of inversions on the human genome and help to uncover previously missing variants related to phenotype variability.

Abstract:
In the Reform Proposals for the Education in Hong Kong published in 2000, it was clearly stated that the priotity of education in the 21st century should be ―to enable our students to enjoy learning, enhance their effectiveness in communication and develop their creativity and sense of commitment‖. This paper aims to respond to two of the aspects — the enhancement of effectiveness in communication and the development of students’ creativity. For years, schools have focused on promoting students’ creavity in reading and writing, but not in speaking. In fact, among the various language skills, ‘speaking’ is the skill students have to demonstrate the most in their daily interaction. Compared to reading and writing, the ability to express one‘s views verbally in a creative manner can give rise to more direct interaction, acting as a genuine reflection of a student’s wisdom, knowledge, capability and potential. It is also a lifelong skill that students can apply when they join the workforce in the future. It is therefore meaningful to place emphasis on cultivating students’ creativity in speaking. This research aims to explore the correlation between the Chinese oral proficiency and creative ability of senior secondary students in Hong Kong based on existing theories on the development of creativity and speaking. Target participants, recruited from two aided secondary schools of different abilities, receive training on speaking and creative thinking, and analysis is done adopting both the quantitative and qualitative approaches. Students of each school are first randomly divided into two groups — the experimental group and control group. Students of both groups are required to take a pre-test and a post-test, as well as complete a set of questionnaire in each session. Results obtained are compared and contrasted to gauge the changes in their oral proficiency and creative ability. In between the tests, the experiemental group receives seven experimental design lectures on News and Report, one of the elective modules of the NSS curriculum in Chinese Language Education, while the control group receives lectures on News and Report which reference on the samples from Education Bureau only, no experimental design lectures will be delivered. In the end, the three teachers involved in the study were interviewed, during which the teachers offered their observations on the change in the students’ learning behaviour and attitude. Based on the data collected from the administration of tests, questionnaires and interviews, the following conclusions are made: first, there is a correlation between oral proficiency and creative ability; second, students’ attitude and values have a direct impact on the effectiveness of the module; third, the Speaking and Creativity Assessment rubric used in the study proved to be successful in assessing the said abilities, enhancing learning effectiveness. Through the analysis of data collected, this research contributed to Chinese Language Education to some extent, especially in the teaching of oral proficiency and creativity. It opened up a new set of criteria for the assessment of creative speaking ability from different perspectives to ensure objectivity of results, offered diversified course materials that can effectively raise the standard of students’ speaking and critical thinking ability.
published_or_final_version
Education
Doctoral
Doctor of Education

Thus, the development becomes an element that adds political, economic, social and environmental values . In Mozambique the development model adopted by the State prioritizes the economic dimension, in this case favoring the growth of capitalist structure production. Thus , the basic conditions for human survival still leaves much to be desired and the Mozambican population in general and the district of Chibuto , in particular , continue to face several difficulties to have access to such conditions, and the lack of potable water is a that most of the problems afflicting this population . The water was always a factor related to the socio-economic development of the population, where great civilizations and major economic marks were always influenced by water availability, and today this feature is present in all sectors of production. In Mozambique, much effort has been made by the government, national and international organizations to enhance and guarantee the supply of potable and drinking water, and despite all this effort, most of the population does not have access to this precious resource. In this sense, this work presents an analysis of the effects of the National Water Policy in the study area, analyzes the shortage of potable water in the district of Chibuto, discusses the design and development contained in the official discourse of the state and, opposes the idea of human development. For such issues that help to understand the phenomenon under study, such as territory, public policy and criticism of hegemonic conception of development are addressed. To make the desired approach, we performed a characterization of the District of Chibuto, addressing the issue of poverty, with a brief discussion of this concept, from different approaches, and analyze the impact of the PARPA (Action Plan for the Reduction of Absolute Poverty) in fighting poverty in Mozambique, and became a description of the scenario of poverty and vulnerability in Chibuto district with the construction of Territorial Human Development Index. Research also brings up a discussion about territory and technicization which describes the senary of the water supply system in the District and territorial dynamics of Chibuto, from the analysis and description of existing structures and other technical objects that structure the territory under study. Thus, it was found that the development should be summarized in the satisfaction of human needs, and should be the cornerstone of the new type of development that is intended for the purpose of triggering urgently actions to overcome or combat bleak misery suffered by the majority of inhabitants of the District of Chibuto

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Sixteen Kingdoms was a period of political disintegration in medieval China. Foreign rulers of Wu Hu (“Five Barbarian Tribes”) captured the northern China during the 3rd – 5th centuries and established independent states through continuous military actions. This thesis aims at studying the relationship between the emperors and Buddhist monks in the Northwest empires in the Sixteen Kingdoms Period, including the Former Liang (320-376), the Western Qin (385-400; 409-431), the Later Liang (386-403), the Northern Liang (397-439) and the Xia (407-431), by developing a theoretical model called “Hourglass Model”. The model provides a holistic framework for investigating not only the emperors’ changing attitudes towards Buddhism but also the dissemination of the Dharma by monks. In addition, the concept of “data visualization” is implemented to re-interpret various historical sources. The complex interaction among imperial clans and Buddhist practitioners is further analyzed with computer-aided historical research methods. This thesis hopes to reveal the inspiring nature of the political religion in China’s early medieval age and expand the scope of Chinese Studies by rethinking about foreign rulers and Buddhist monks’ roles in reshaping and vitalizing the Chinese civilization. Moreover, this study develops alternative approaches to the research on the history of Chinese Buddhism, and attempts to shed new lights on theories and research methodology.
published_or_final_version
Chinese
Master
Master of Philosophy

Full text
Abstract:
98
Huan-Wei-Guan in Northern Sung Dynasty, which can be traced back to the sixteen-guards in Southern Government Office of the Fu-Bing System in early Tang Dynasty, was so significant that it had once been known as “the ruler’s assistant, the country’s mainstay”. However, along with the development of political and military condition in Tang Dynasty, the sixteen-guards in Southern Government Office gradually lose its original function and became nominal. Till late Tang Dynasty, it even exited in name only. Because Huan-Wei-Guan in Northern Sung Dynasty, which adopted the system of Tang Dynasty, had the feature of “no organization, no particular job but considerable profit”, its sources ranged from royal clan and military ministers to relatives of the ruler, rulers or ministers from surrendered countries and savages, etc. Secondly, the political and military condition that Sung Dynasty confronted during its establishment process had deeply influenced its political and governmental system. Take Huan-Wei-Guan for example; in order to consolidate the power of authority and to avert the rebellions happened in previous dynasties, rulers in Northern Sung Dynasty set the Huan-Wei-Guan system with the motivations of giving preference, rewarding or dominating; each decision seems to have its political purpose. Further more, through bestowing higher official positions to retired officials or important ministers who had passed away, Huan-Wei-Guan functioned as “treatment with high respect”, which successfully stabled ministers and officials’ working emotions and reinforced their loyalty to the Court. Therefore, the function of Huan-Wei-Guan might have been the main reason why Northern Sung Dynasty could prevent political interference from the ruler’s relatives and calamity to the country brought by the military ministers more successfully than previous dynasties. Due to its remarkable effectiveness to the steadiness of the political situation, Huan-Wei-Guan had remained its existence unchanged throughout Northern Sung Dynasty. Among the huge and diverse official systems in Northern Sung Dynasty, Huan-Wei-Guan seems to be a position which doesn’t attract much attention. Even though, this thesis still takes it as the subject of the study, and has a lot of new discoveries about its function and position among the official systems in Northern Sung Dynasty, and also proves its value and meaning. Therefore, this thesis should have some contribution to the development of new topics for studies of Sung Dynasty.

Mysterious and mysterious, dang-ki gains certain supernatural powers by means of being possessed by gods. The subject of the present study is the Wu-ji Guanhuang Gong located in Banqiao of New Taipei City, Taiwan. The study investigates shared characteristics of the believers, the belief development and organization system which result from the change of society, and the influence of charity events on believers. In the modern society, dang-ki has transformed into something else. The abbot of Banqiao Wuju Guanhuang Gong, Xinquan Shen, leads his believers to do charity work, which is another way of ego-transcending spiritual practice. By caring about the society, dang-ki or lingjis can rise above and in fact realize the spirit of religion. After so many years of creating, I hope to find the relation between myself and them. So I set up the topic “What are the fantasized creatures?” as the core of this study. In Chapter 1《Introduction》, I will list some issues about the relationship between fantasy creatures and myself to build the plan and the process of this study and looking for the answers. In Chapter 2 《"yao guai shou"(妖怪獸): My fantasy creatures》, I start from the looks of the fantasized creatures, to find out the location of my own creations. First, I organized the shapes of "yao guai"(妖怪) and "monsters" defined by the ancients. Some main indicators of the design which these imagined, supernatural things share in common, such as "yao guai", "monster", "guai shou"(怪獸), "devil", "elf", and etc, will be pointed out. These indicators will be used to compare with my own creations, then the location of my fantasized creatures will be established. In Chapter 3, 《My yao guai shou and myself》, starting with the question“Where did my fantasized creatures came from?”, I will discuss my thoughts and search what ideal images I pursuit from the appearances of the fantasized creatures affected me from movies, comic books, cartoon, SFX films. Then the answer of “Why do I pursue such ideal?” will help me make sure the status of my mind. Reviewing my own experiences will show up the inseparable relation between my works and myself. Afterwards I will describe the reasons why I chose and obsessed with the fantasized creatures as my subject. In Chapter 4《Creation Context》, I will discuss the gradually changing relation between my mind and my works as the time goes. First, it is the series of the works I wasn’t familiar enough which motivated me to discuss this topic, because they were constrained and didn’t have any variations from my own opinions. Abstract:
93
This is a case study focused on the reconstruction of Puli community after the tremendous earthquake in Taiwan in 2000. Throughout the participation of a woman group to this reconstruction, I want to illustrate how the adult learning occurs in the transition of social situation, and how the process, form and character of learning are decided by the subject, the actor of agent, the woman. The earthquake in 2000 has deconstructed the village community life of Puli both at the concrete and mental dimension. A form of reactivity occurs when people are out of harmony with their social milieu. It was argued that people endeavor to live in a state of equilibrium with that milieu but when disharmony occurs people react to seek to recreate the state of equilibrium. Then a movement of reconstruction of local community was occurring. People do this in life transition situation. Because they are in the process of being changed from one set of structure to another. It is supposed that changes in the life situation act as a trigger for learning. These women now have to learn to define the social situation from a woman’s position and act on it. Social situations have no intrinsic meaning but that they are each defined by the actors according to their previous experience and according to their place within the situation. A specific form of adult-woman learning is developed at the same time with the reconstruction of a local community.

He had simulated “Chun-Hua Attic Book”, “Collective Wang’s Characters for Saint Teaching Preface”, “Lan-Ting Collection Preface” and works of Mi Fu without a stop. Among them, Chun-Hua Attic Book was the one he had practiced most frequently. In his lifetime, he spent a lot of efforts simulating Chun-Hua Attic Book, mostly in it, Zhang Zhi, Two Wangs, and some other famous calligraphers’ practice books from Jin dynasty, North-South dynasties, and Tang Dynasty. Since Chun-Hua Attic Book was published in North Song dynasty, it had become the model practice book for calligraphers; it had become the focus in the Chinese calligraphy history. There had been numerous calligraphers fond of this book in each dynasty. During the practice of simulation, calligraphers could absorb the essences of the ancient calligraphers and express calligraphers’ own styles of simulations and innovations from the tradition of Jin dynasty. This paper aims to discuss the calligraphic styles and forms in Guan-Jun Book from both Chun-Hua Attic Book and Qiong-Ruei Thatched Cottage Book. Also, it would discuss the differences of Wan Duo’s simulations of Chun-Hua Attic Book and Guan-Jun Book in through Wang Duo’s various phases in life. There are six chapters in this study. Full text
Abstract:
102
“The Journey to the South”, a fantasy novel written in the Ming Dynasty, is not a classic work, and in general, usually regarded as an imitation of “The Journey to the West”, a classic work. It has long been overlooked by researchers, and this study aims at improving this situation. Xiang-Dou Yu, a book dealer active in the Ming Dynasty, has been identified as the editor of this novel. Because there are only few studies for this novel around, this study will focus upon its inner contexts and constructions, and manage to prove that efforts and designs had been done by the editor, and the result is far from a mere imitation of a classic work. Originally titled as “Biography of Hua-Guang, the Wu-Xian Ling-Guan Emperor”, “The Journey to the West” is a religious biographical novel. Emperor Hua-Guang, its protagonist, is assigned a multi-dimensional image consisting Wu-Xian God, Wu-Tong God, and Commander Ma. The dichotomy between the orthodox and the heterodox religions is adopted to analyze the multiple images of Hua-Guang and the texts of the novel. Generally, in fantasy novels, duels between the Gods and the Evil Spirits dominate the plots. However, “The Journey to the South” is an exception: duels between Hua-Guang and the Heaven play an important role in it, and battles involving various treasures are hugely stressed. Treasures are made the focus in the battles. Inspired by the methodology hired in material culture researches, functions of the treasures in the structure of this novel are also introduced as a theme of this study. Different sides of the personality of Hua-Guang, the protagonist, are revealed when fetching and losing treasures. After sifting and arranging the folk resources, the editor reshaped the mixed images of Hua-Guang in the work, and reminded the readers of Hua-Guang’s affinities towards treasures. While emphasizing the importance of Buddhism, the editor also restrained Taoism in the work. Thus, the active image of the Emperor Hua-Guang is successfully built. These efforts from the editor promise the literary values of this novel, and shall raise it from misjudgments or total oblivion.

Abstract:
102
Urban rapid transit system for the necessary transport facilities are generally in order to set the reduction of elevated ground floor load, providing convenient transportation to shorten the distance of space. Promoting the use of multiobjective of space under Viaduct Act, space are used for public facilities currently such as: fire stations, parking lot, flower market, jade market…etc. However, elevated road infrastructure are focused on car flow much than environment .So that ,it is not very clear to define Viaduct system. It can not link the activities of the same area, but makes other confused, and becomes a fault in this city. it is not only for the pedestrian access under the viaduct, but also be integration of multiple environmental media to attain the overall environmental integrity. Guang-hua area contains Huas-han arts center and Kuang-hua shopping mall mainly where display the cultural and technological imagery. At present, Guang-hua section is cut by Jinshan Viaduct, and it becomes an indefinite area. Activities have been blocked on the edge of the road, making the activities of Guang-hua section can not be linked together with the development of building and is like &;quot;urban active fault.&;quot; The main issue in this paper is how to use the space under the viaduct more effectively. As the subsequent operation of the positive significance of urban viaducts ,I would like to analyze the space under the viaduct in the city by the concept of Urban Public Space, and generalize the design principles to try to explain the spirit of the space under the viaduct。
