Can one build, and efficiently use, networks of arbitrary size and topology using a "standard" node whose resources, in terms of memory and reliability, do not need to scale up with the complexity and size of the network? This thesis addresses two important aspects of this question. The first is whether one can achieve efficient connectivity despite the presence of a constant probability of faults per node/link. Efficient connectivity means (informally) having every pair of regions connected by a constant fraction of the independent, entirely non-faulty paths that would be present if the entire network were fault free - even at distances where each path has only a vanishingly small probability of being fault-free. The answer is yes, as long as some very mild topological conditions on the high level structure of the network are met - informally, if the network is not too "thin" and if it does not contain too many large "holes". The results go against some established "empyrical wisdom" in the networking community. The second issue addressed by this thesis is whether one can route efficiently on a network of arbitrary size and topology using only a constant number c of bits/node (even if c is less than the logarithm of the network's size!). Routing efficiently means (informally) that message delivery should only stretch the delivery path by a constant factor. The answer again is yes, as long as the volume of the network grows only polynomially with its radius (otherwise, we run into established lower bounds). This effectively captures every network one may build in a universe (like our own) with finite dimensionality using links of a fixed, maximum length and nodes with a fixed, minimum volume. The results extend the current results for compact routing, allowing one to route efficiently on a much larger class of networks than had previously been known, with many fewer bits.

Abstract:
Studies of Hugo Grotius\'s work suggest its relevance for the constitution of a modern concept of natural law. The analysis of the content of his main political works, De Jure Praedae Commentarius and De Jure Belli ac Pacis, opened space for the identification of concepts inspired by the Roman stoicism and eclecticism, specially from Seneca and Cicero, mainly regarding the natural law. Moreover, the author\'s jusnaturalistic approach serves as a base to support his arguments in defence of the possibility to wage a just war. Therefore, an analysis of the Grotian natural law requires a reflection upon these two aspects. Aiming at comprehending the origin of the concepts of natural law and natural rights and the consequences Grotius retrieves from them, the present dissertation investigates a possible stoic and eclectic infuence on the conception of natural rights formulated by Grotius and the link between this formulation and the Grotian\'s theory of war and punishment.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Montpellier 3, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006MON30007.

Full text
Abstract:
This study tries to explain the importance of epic writing in Hugo’s works. Epic writing and not epic poems, because Hugo always refuses to disconnect literary genres, in particular in the case of the epic. In fact, epic totalisation concerns not only representation itself (including a cosmic immensity) but also a kind of generic fusion. That’s why it is important to analyse Hugo’s epic genealogy, in order to understand the aesthetic and ideologic dimension of his relation with epic paradigmatic authors, in particular Homere. This question also highligths the link between epic writing and greatness, even if Hugo wants to democratize this one. Here is the spring of an epic crisis: the transformation of morphologic features (length or narrativity) and also narratologic choices (Hugo contests impersonnality) are the evidence of a critic about epic traditional notions (for instance the sublime), above all after Napoleon III’s putsch. Hugo especially criticizes war, which is described as an archaic and disastrous reality. Nevertheless, Hugo’s thought about this subject is very ambiguous, and the description of a new epic style, in William Shakespeare, is not really confirmed by his works: many problems or contradictions suggest that struggle (also in a cosmic meaning) is a very important feature, which could explain the importance of an epic writing in Hugo’s works

Most moralists argue that obligations which an individual has toward the state and toward persons qua fellow citizens should not override the obligations which every individual has toward other persons qua members of humanity. Essential to a moralist approach is the idea that every individual shares some feature, such as rights, which is universal to all men and incontrovertible by any body. Many moralists base their theory upon the thought of Hugo Grotius, equating Grotius ' s thought with their own moralist approach. This thesis argues that Grotius does not present a universal ethic and that his thought does not serve as a foundation for contemporary moralist theory. Individualist elements of Grotius's thought which do uphold a universalist ethic should not be viewed in isolation; his natural law argument includes a notion of community as well as individual rights. Grotius accommodates individualism and community in what I call a Grotian "conciliation." To argue that Grotius's theory is one of conciliation, I analyze his discussions of society and contend that throughout his discussions Grotius identifies man as an individual with obligations to respect the rights of all others as well as a citizen with obligations to the superior rights of the sovereign. I then compare Grotius's thought to that of Immanuel Kant in order to demonstrate that the accommodation found in Grotius is not equivalent to Kant's universalist ethic. To equate his thought to Kant's thought, or to any other universalist ethic, is to attribute concerns to Grotius which are not necessarily addressed in his theory. Not only may this do an injustice to the different concerns by Grotius, but it overlooks the possibility that Grotius's conciliation may offer an alternative to, rather than a substantiation of, the moralist approach in international relations theory.

Abstract:
There are many software visualization tools available today to help software engineers to explore software systems. However, when a system is huge, some of these tools do not satisfy the exploration requirements. The big problem is that the techniques the tools use do not provide an effective display and access mechanism to handle huge information spaces within the limitations imposed by available screen space. To alleviate the problem, this thesis describes methods that help users to explore huge software systems. In particular, we apply dynamic browsing incorporating such details as an extra result box mechanism, plus pattern based searching to help users to handle large query results. Then the thesis introduces the algorithms we apply to generate the layouts. We propose the radial angle model to visualize the internal structures of rooted trees. Also we apply the spring model to visualize the external structures among rooted trees. Next, the thesis describes various animation methods we use to smooth the transitions, track the focus of exploration, clarify unexpected results, and illustrate complex operations. In addition, we modify traditional camera animation, and propose an animation timing scheme 'slow-in fast-out' to exaggerate the reality. Next, the thesis describes a series of experiments we conducted to assess the effectiveness of the browsing, layout algorithm and animation techniques we implemented. Finally the thesis describes how we use the analysis of the experiment results to guide our future research.

Abstract:
This project is an elaboration of how luminaire design can provide for fundamental human needs. Visual needs in terms of task performance, orientability and visual comfort; emotional needs in terms of soothing feelings of safeness and cosiness; and biological needs in terms of circadian rhythm and resetting of our biological clock in the morning. These needs are tested through three bedroom scenarios named focus, contemplation and dawn, each with their own demands and desires on lighting qualities.  I have submerged into desired lighting qualities and atmosphere in a bedroom context; into how circadian rhythm can be promoted through lighting design; into how the perception of space can be effected through light; into how responsible use of natural resources can be achieved; and finally into what the impact and consequences of the design intervention are. The investigation is performed in a generic bedroom situation without daylight considerations. A prototype has been produced in order to perform observations and measurements.  Through the investigation I can state that luminaire design is able to provide for visual, emotional and biological needs. By simultaneously working with light qualities and shape of the luminaire, and having formulated the specific scenarios focus, contemplation and dawn, qualitative observations and experience could be supplemented by quantitative measurements and drive the design process forward towards intended lighting effects, characteristics and impacts on the human body and mind.

Abstract:
The death penalty occupies an essential place in Victor Hugo's work, notably in his narrative work where he emphasizes the rhetoric resources in attempts to convince his reader of the necessity of abolishing this practice which he considers "barbaric". This memoir suggests a reading of this rhetoric, concentrating on various specific Hugolian arguments and suggesting a global vision of his reasoning. The first chapter demonstrates that the opposition between law and his application lies at the root of the judicial criticism according to Hugo, from which also stems the question of death penalty to begin with. We then study the genesis and the functioning of multiple arguments depicting the consistency and persistency of Hugo's reasoning, these arguments being interpreted from novel to novel. Finally, in the third chapter, we analyze history's role as a meta-argument of the abolishment; the historical development often structuring the opposition of Hugo's theory regarding the excessive use of capital punishment.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD) -- Macquarie University, School of English and Linguistics, 1989.
Bibliography: leaves 385-393.
Introduction -- Traditional Huli society -- Segmental phonology -- Prosodies -- Verbs -- Adverbials -- NominaIs -- Word complexes -- Group complexes -- Semantic patterns -- Linguistic and social change -- Texts.
This thesis describes the language of the Huli speech community of the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. The first chapter situates the speech community in its historical setting, and refers to previous, mainly non-linguistic, studies. The second chapter situates the commuity in its geographical and 'traditional' setting, recording putative migrations and dialectal variations. The third chapter describes segmental phonology at a level of detail not previously given in accounts of the language, while the fourth chapter presents a tentative exploration of prosodic features. The fifth chapter describes verbs, the sixth adverbials, and the seventh nominals: in each instance there is an emphasis on morphology and morphophonemic processes hitherto unrecorded for Huli. The eighth chapter describes word complexes, and the ninth group complexes, using a systemic-functional approach that establishes a descriptive framework that indicates useful insights into the pragmatics of the language. Chapter ten selects and explores, in varying degrees, semantic features that are typologically interesting, while chapter eleven re-focusses the thesis on sociolinguistic issues. The twelveth chapter presents a dozen texts, which it interprets and comments on in the light of linguistic and sociological descriptions presented previously. The appendices that follow give the data bases for some of the descriptions given in the thesis body. The body of the thesis is concerned with describing the language as it is being created and used by living, real, people. Hence, the language forms at each level are described and interpreted in relation to their functions in creating meaning. This has necessitated presenting in some detail phonological and morphological data that need to be described if the language is to be seen as the growing, changing expression of the living society that uses and creates it.

McKinney, David LeRoy. "Interpreting the Organ Works of Hugo Distler." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/194024.

Full text
Abstract:
The document examines Hugo Distler’s organ solo works within the context of performance. Chapter One contains relevant biographical information primarily based on the work of Ursula Herrmann. Chapter Two discusses the cultural, academic, and career influences on Distler’s compositional output. Chapter Three has analyses of select organ works and a discussion as to how these relate to performance. Chapter Four provides information about the playing and physical execution of Distler’s music at the organ console, with much of the information coming from primary sources written by Distler himself. Distler was born out of wedlock in Nürnberg. His early childhood was fraught with bad experiences. Under the guardianship of his maternal grandparents, he attended a Gymnasium and a music academy. When he was later unable to complete his studies at the Leipzig Conservatory, his teachers provided him with excellent recommendations, and Distler became the new organist at St. Jakobi in Lübeck in 1931. In this new environment, he became famous as a church musician, organist, conductor, and composer - the par excellence of German music. His other positions were in academia in Stuttgart and Berlin, and he eventually became a full professor. Due to the repression by the Nazi party, constantly being overworked, and the impact of his early childhood upon his psyche, Distler committed suicide on All Saints Day, November 1, 1942. Distler became the first person to compose music for the organ in a modern style that was suited for the sound of the Baroque organ. His organ music is based on vocal techniques, experiments with rhythm, uses a variety of scales and modes, and is generally pentatonic. The ideology of clarity in Distler’s works is of utmost importance. It should be apparent that this dictates the performer’s choices regarding how to interpret them. Registration, tempi, and articulation are servants to the composition. Performers of his music need to remain cognizant of this.

Grandemange, Thierry. Thesis, Tours, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008TOUR2019/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Arnold and Hugo de Lantins, two Franco-Flemish composers florishing between 1420 and 1430, have left us a set of thirsty-two songs, three of which are from doubtful ascription. As neither historical documents nor paleographical data can helps to credit one or the other composer with those three songs, an attempt for an ascription will only rest on stylistic criteria. The analysis firstly rests on the assertion of the organisation of the voices in an independent duet to which a secondary contratenor is added, and secondly, on the distinction between simple and florid counterpoint. On the basis of rules stated by theoreticians, it is possible to reach the level of simple counterpoint by means of successive reductions. It is only in a second phase that the elements of florid counterpoint - which make up style so to speak - are dealt with : rhythmic, harmonic and melodic elements, as well as imitation to which a chapter is devoted. The relation between the poetical and musical structures rests on Graeme Boone's prosodic pattern. This pattern allows us to show how poetical articulations are arranged in relation to musical articulations, particularly in the context of entries in imitation. What emerges is that both songs "Chanter ne scay" and "Mon doulx espoir" are very close on a stylistic level and attributable to Hugo de Lantins, whereas the data for "Ung seul confort" are more difficult to interpret. An extension of the method suggests new ascriptions for the anonymous songs of fascicule III of the Oxford manuscript, and confirms some other ascriptions once questioned by scholars

Dufief, Véronique. "Victor Hugo et le désir de savoir." Paris 7, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1994PA070084.

Abstract:
What do we learn when reading literature? knowledge which is of a certain king : it requires a description and its validity may be questionned. Victor hugo's work raises these problems in acute form and enables us to examin them : the desire for knowledge is one of the main themes in his production. In three texts, from the author's maturity, a novel, quatrevingt-treize, a play, la foret mouillee, an unfinished epic poem, la fin de satan, hugo's libido sciendi is studied from three points of view : political, erotic and metaphysical
