Abstract:
Kindergarden - How can we create different synergies between different fields that they can benefit from each other? What different activities will suit the kindergarden? How will our perception of the kindergarden, of its need and function in society, change? In this Degree Project in Architecture I will be investigating the combination of the kindergarden together with a restaurant and a dance studio. I believe these activities will harmonize since they have overlapping benefits: We all eat, move and grow. With the new architectural activities in mind, I will further investigate the importance of the kindergarden as a part of society, more specifically our perception of what function it may, may not or could fill. I share the idea with a lot of authors, scientist that we are headed toward a society where children are kept too safe, thus minimising their chance to experience and learn to cope with a harsh reality when they grow up as adults. It's ok to get hurt to an extent, as long as they do not endanger their lives.

Abstract:
The Sixteen Kingdoms was a period of political disintegration in medieval China. Foreign rulers of Wu Hu (“Five Barbarian Tribes”) captured the northern China during the 3rd – 5th centuries and established independent states through continuous military actions. This thesis aims at studying the relationship between the emperors and Buddhist monks in the Northwest empires in the Sixteen Kingdoms Period, including the Former Liang (320-376), the Western Qin (385-400; 409-431), the Later Liang (386-403), the Northern Liang (397-439) and the Xia (407-431), by developing a theoretical model called “Hourglass Model”. The model provides a holistic framework for investigating not only the emperors’ changing attitudes towards Buddhism but also the dissemination of the Dharma by monks. In addition, the concept of “data visualization” is implemented to re-interpret various historical sources. The complex interaction among imperial clans and Buddhist practitioners is further analyzed with computer-aided historical research methods. This thesis hopes to reveal the inspiring nature of the political religion in China’s early medieval age and expand the scope of Chinese Studies by rethinking about foreign rulers and Buddhist monks’ roles in reshaping and vitalizing the Chinese civilization. Moreover, this study develops alternative approaches to the research on the history of Chinese Buddhism, and attempts to shed new lights on theories and research methodology.

"Non-mainstream intellectual phenomenon in the mid-Tang period : characteristics of Dan Zhu's (724-770) Chun qiu study and related social background = Zhong Tang ru xue si xiang de yi cai : Dan Zhu (724-770) zhi "Chun qiu" de te dian ji qi xiang guan she hui bei jing." Full text
Abstract:
The intellectual development in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) could be generally divided into two phases, with the first one inherited from the Han Wei period focusing on the meaning of words, while the second phase focuses on the teaching of the Confucian classics. Among the various scholars during the course of this transformation, Dan Zhu (啖助,724-770) has been recognized as a non-mainstream but yet very influential character. To avoid the An-Shi Rebellion, Dan Zhu resided in the south-eastern part of the country where he taught Lu Chun (陸淳) the Chun Qiu (春秋) classic. Many famous Tang political reformers including Lu Wen (呂溫) and Liu Zong Yuan (柳宗元) are considered by historians as Dan Zhu’s students and followers. This has made Dan Zhu even more influential than other Confucius scholars in that period. Nevertheless, due to the controversial nature of his teachings, Dan Zhu was heavily criticized by Ouyang Xiu (歐陽修) as being specious and at the same time appraised by Cheng Yi (程頤) to be one of the fore-runners who founded the Song Confucianism. This research reveals that Dan Zhu abandons the approach of focusing on the meaning wording and goes directly into the teachings of the classics. He considers that there are large amount of mistakes in the then contemporary explanation of Chun Qiu, he also considers that Tang scholars have not just worked in isolation without much view sharing, but also misinterpreted Confucius’ teachings. Moreover, the Tang scholars are treating Chun Qiu as history or even as literature, rather than Confucius’ teaching on how the society should be run. From Dan Zhu’s perspective, Confucius was trying to make use of histories to set proper behavioural standards and protocols for running the country, with an objective of saving the imperial control of Zhou (周). During the mid-Tang period, China was undergoing major social changes from a feudal to a modern society. Tang imperials whose ancestors carried a nomadic blood stream tried to strengthen their control by adopting Confucianism; and placing more emphasis on the south-eastern region where the Han Chinese of the Southern Dynasty was concentrated. Coupling with the civil examination (科舉) reform and the impacts of Zen Buddhism, the Tang society was undergoing major social-political transformation which Dan Zhu was situated right on its course. The research concludes that Dan Zhu’s ideas fit well with Xuan-zong’s (唐玄宗) appeal for revival of Confucius teachings and the social-political setting in Mid-Tang. Although Dan Zhu is considered a non-mainstream scholar, his teachings have brought about significant impacts on later development of the Neo-Confucianism. Nonetheless, Dan Zhu has not deviated from the fundamental principles of a Confucian whose destiny is to serve the people and the country, and of course for Dan Zhu, the Tang Dynasty.

Abstract:
International Baccalaureate (IB) Curriculum is adopted by more and more international schools and direct-subsidy schools in Hong Kong. At the same time, more and more non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students choose to study Chinese Language as a second language in IB curriculum. However, the vocabulary learning is one of the difficulties when they learn Chinese. The Education Bureau has published ‘Consultation Paper on Developing a “Supplementary Guide to the Chinese Language Curriculum for Non-Chinese Speaking Students” ’ and points out those NCS students encounter difficulties in learning Chinese graphemes, tones, vocabulary, etc. These difficulties are related to morpheme. Many researchers have conducted to study on relationship between morphological awareness and lexical knowledge. This dissertation aims to study on the relationship between morphological awareness and lexical ability of IB Middle Year Programme (MYP) students in Hong Kong. This is a quantitative research. Data collection includes two tests of the morphological awareness and lexical ability paper-pencil tests and one summative unit test of Chinese Language subject in a school. IB MYP students of two classes participated in this study and their morphological awareness and lexical ability were tested and analyzed by the statistical analysis software. The objectives of the study are: (1) Analysis on the types of lexicon errors of IB MYP students in Hong Kong; (2) Analysis on the relationship between morphological awareness and lexical ability of IB MYP students in Hong Kong; (3) Suggestions on developing of morphological awareness in learning Chinese Language as a second language. The results find that most of the lexicon errors were related to the tones and radical components of Chinese character, it is suggested to develop the homophone awareness and the orthographic awareness of Chinese character to reduce the lexicon errors. The morphological awareness of students has influence on student’s lexical ability. The homophone awareness has a closer relationship with lexical ability. The morphological awareness of the mental lexicon has an influence on the amount of mental lexicon and the ability of using lexicon. It is suggested to develop the morphological awareness of students in teaching Chinese as a second language to further study the relationship between the development of morphological awareness and mental lexicon in the future.

In 1962, Taiwan Television (TTV) started broadcasting. It is the first and only television channel in Taiwan until 1969. Among the programs then, Qun-Xing-Hui (star showcase) is the first singing show broadcasted, and the most long-lived and popular television singing show until its broadcasting got stopped in 1977. Because of Qun-Xing-Hui, lots of singers and songs went viral in Taiwan. It opened up markets for Mandarin popular songs in Taiwan and even in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, etc.. The producer of Qun-Xing-Hui, Shen-Chih, is the key person behind the scene. Qun-Xing-Hui is now regarded as the most influential television program in the development of Taiwan popular music in 1960s. This study aims to study Shen-Chih’s design for Qun-Xing-Hui through analyzing the content of this program in its historical context. As few video records left, this paper studies the content of Qun-Xing-Hui by examining magazine (mainly TTV Weekly), newspaper, and the producer’s manuscript, as well as interviewing with the program director and singers. The findings suggest that Shen-Chih’s design for Qun-Xing-Hui is to present “modern” things within the framework of Shen-Chih’s concept of “classic”. To conclude, this paper may be of importance in explaining the soundscape of Mandarin popular songs in 1960s and 1970s Taiwan, and also in understanding television’s impacts on the development of Taiwan popular music.

ABSTRACT Due to cultural changes in the over 2,000 years since its birth in the fifth century B.C. and its transmission around the world, Buddhism could not avoid an accumulation of relative truths added to it as later developments. These so-called developments are perhaps helpful in revealing the absolute truth of the Dharma, but they also may conceal the true nature of the dharma. So, while understanding the Dharma with a twenty-first century, globalized worldview, we should also study Buddhism’s original concerns in the footsteps of the past saints, with the classic scriptures as the foundation for the life of those seeking self-cultivation. This paper researches the explanation of one chapter of the Lotus Sutra by Tiantai Second Chinese Patriarch, Master Hui-Si, in his work, The Meaning of Steadiness,Happiness and Activity in Lotus Sutra. Through the ages, the main interpretation of the Lotus Sutra has been that the prominent feature of its thought is the chapter of “expedient means.” However, Hui-Si instead selected “the course of ease and bliss " as the representative for integral Dharma gate lotus practice devoid of distinguishing features, and used this to construct the basis for the overall blueprint of cultivation in the lives of people working towards becoming attaining Buddhahood –The Meaning of Steadiness,Happiness and Activity in Lotus Sutra. This work is formed by the profound interaction between Hui-Si’s own life experience and the Lotus Sutra classic teachings. This paper will analyze the three major elements of this interpretation – Buddha nature, concentration and forbearance. These three major elements are used as the paper’s structure, separated into chapters, by discussing in turn the thoughts and arguments revealed by Hui-Si in this work and the intention of the overall structure of the work. There are three directions of research: 1. Searching for the source of the scriptural and ideological basis of the three major elements in the thought of Hui-Si’s Meaning of Steadiness,Happiness and Activity in Lotus Sutra, and interpreting this scriptural basis as the foundation for further addressing places where individual, unique interpretation can be found. 2. Analyzing principles of the interrelationships between the three major elements in Hui-Si’s Meaning of Steadiness,Happiness and Activity in Lotus Sutra. 3. Discussing interaction between the three major principles and Hui-Si’s life experiences. With The Meaning of Steadiness,Happiness and Activity in Lotus Sutra, Hui-Si constructed the basis for a blueprint for practice. What makes it most accessible is that this classic may be called the Buddha’s teaching for the masses in the last days. Hui-Si interpreted this sutra as though Buddha was teaching the Dharma personally. To this day, The Meaning of Steadiness,Happiness and Activity in Lotus Sutra is still an accessible way to explain the Lotus Sutra to contemporary masses, giving today’s scholars matters for self-reflection.

Make-up is the display of self charm as well as an important factor of styling. A beautiful styling can also be regarded as art; the style of beauty is expressed through various expressions. Make-up has also been identified with characterization of courtesy and self-confidence, to satisfy one’s own inner most needs and obtain recognition. The expressions of sense for beauty should take into consideration form and cultural connotation standards, and the points of view of aesthetic experience. The inspiration in design of many fashion products will always develop by following technological, ethnical, cultural, religious and aesthetic theories. Understanding artistic style and aesthetic ideas is not static, but it is integrating beauty into the art of living. In addition to the eight major arts, « painting, sculpture, architecture, dance, music, literature, cinema, theatre », the fashion artistic creation such as make-up, hairstyle and nail painting will enrich beauty and artistic value. The classification of aesthetic creation in fashion is diverse, including fashion, business, leisure, artistic, matrimonial, realistic and individualistic etc. Creative design can be applied to technical level of styling of fashion such as make-up. Good skills must be based on academic theory of aesthetics. In order to improve creative design theoretical study must be applied to establish a good basis in the field of aesthetics and painting skills. Only then the aesthetical application and the spirit of creative arts will be expressed. This thesis is theoretically based on induction, analysis and creation applied to aesthetic theory. After relentless modifications I was able to complete the research and I expect this to be my personal striving direction in the future. This thesis is structured into the following five chapters: Chapter One – the introduction – describes the motivation and purpose of this study, the research, methodology as well as the framework of the research scope and process. Chapter Two talks about aesthetics of creative arts by exploring the aesthetic proposition of colours, face shapes and facial features, shape aesthetics, and the influence of artistic style in make-up. Chapter Three clarifies the concept of creative content, analysing the style of「Ukiyo Elegance」 (floating world), in its evolution through the various epochs of make-up influenced by other countries. The creative theory of “Ukiyo Elegance” in make-up art, combined with the wealth of visual fashion information, will hopefully achieve meaning and value. Chapter Four consists of the analysis of make-up creative work in the style of 「Ukiyo Elegance」, including the study of the relation between life and art, creative style of modern figures, and creative themes such as hair decorative arts, stage make-up, nail painting and mask painting. Chapter Five – the Conclusion - summarizes the research experience. This study’s expectation is that it will create new thinking concepts in the drama and lighting art, based on theoretical research. Abstract:XunZi witnessed at that time the social conflict occurred repeatedly, because the leaning danger disobeyed the chaotic fact, the backward root in the human nature that the natural passion has not been controlled, therefore proposed the doctrine of sinful nature . XunZi’s doctrine of sinful nature is the result of his observation of human nature and shouldn’t be regarded as the conclusion of reasoning. XunZi believed in “ the evil of human nature” , good had to be achieved through the “transforming influence of a role model” and the “principles of propriety and righteousness” to “eliminate the evil of human nature.” “Hua Xing Qi Wei” is only way to doing good of the XunZi’s doctrine of sinful nature. It is in terms of Hsin’s knowing Li-Yi and its directing and correcting Hsin according to Li-Yi that human has moral performance. According to XunZi,Hsin has to practice His-Yi-Ching, otherwise it can’t really know Li-Yi and actually do what it can and should do.The goal of cultivation is not to eliminate human desires, but to limit them appropriately. XunZi built the philosophy of man and moral epistemology around the “mind knowing Tao .” XunZi’s ideal of good is manifested in moral practice, particularly in social ethics, while the pursuit of “good” lied in the subjective “blindness-dispelling mind” and the objective “Li” or “Tao”. And “good” is achieved through the process of “ the mind knowing Tao”. With the guidance of teacher and good friend's accompaning, studies and practices Li-Yi perseveringly, then sinful nature transformed and forms the inner force. The daily life then can practice the morals naturally, and can obey the social standard, then there is no more society's chaos, the country also tends to good. According to the Taiwan Organic Information Portal, the organic agriculture system was officially introduced and recognized in 1986, after a feasibility evaluation from professors in National Taiwan University and National Chun Hsin University. Organic agriculture is an alternative agricultural system, which is less harmful to the environment. In the mean time, it offers consumers a healthier agricultural product. The aim of this research is to study the purpose of the organic agriculture organization and its networking by examining the development of the Hui-Xiang Organic Corporation. Through the case study of the Hui-Xiang Organic Corporation, we can provide the valuable data for organic farmers, networking wise. This thesis explores: 1. The current organic agriculture situation in Taiwan 2. The development of agriculture organizations and their networking in Taiwan After examining the data from the interviews, it has shown that: 1. Due to global warming and the change of environment, the purpose of the organic agricultural organizations is to bring the awareness of enhancing the environmental quality and reducing the environmental pollution to people. In this study, similarly, it is found that Hui-Xiang is an organization, where a group of people gather together for the same purpose and reasons. They are all dedicated to hui-xiang (廻鄉), which in Chinese indicates returning to nature. They not only had this dream but have also fulfilled it. 2. Different from most of the enterprises aiming to make profits, the ultimate goal of organic agriculture organization is to improve the quality of life. Hui-Xiang’s vision is not only to help fulfill the physiological needs of the society, but also build an environment that is under mutual- trust, where people are able to sense the value and meanings of life. 3. The networking of organic farmers can not only balance the supply and the demand of the market , furthermore, it integrates with upstream and downstream information systems.

The thesis aims to compare Jin Ao Xin Hua and Jian Deng Xin Hua, two marriage love stories between different species, with narrative analysis by means of the parallel study, and we can discover the originality and uniqueness of Jin Ao Xin Hua. The thesis can be divided into four parts. Part I is about Jin Ao Xin Hua, the author’s entire life and creating background, and the abstract of his works related to marriage love stories between different species. Part II is about Qü You, the author of Jian Deng Xin Hua, his entire life and creating background, and the abstract of his novels associated with marriage love stories between different species. Part III concerns the main narrative themes of the two works by means of narrative analysis, attempting to find out the narrative characteristics, and the similarities and differences between the two works. Part IV, however, compares the differences between the two authors’ thoughts of literary creation, including their philosophy of life, love and marriage. Based on the above-mentioned points, I try to anaylse how Jin Shi Xi creatively embodied his thought of literary creation during his creating process, and in view of this, I attempt to think outside the box of the past studies. Jin Ao Xin Hua and Jian Deng Xin Hua were both written to insinuate the dark side of the society at that time, and express the authors’ own beliefs in a state of the unrealized aspirations. After comparing the two literary works, we can know that Jin Shi Xi had original ideas on not only the narrative style but also the thought of literary creation, and the works are imbued with strong Korean ethnic colours; therefore, we can say that Jin Ao Xin Hua is not a pure imitation of Jian Deng Xin Hua.
