Full textAbstract : Brain glucose consumption deteriorates with age, a situation that worsens with the onset of Alzheimer's disease. However, this early energy problem in the disease is limited to glucose and does not affect brain ketone uptake. Ketones are the main alternative fuel for the brain when glucose concentrations are decreased. They are produced endogenously after moderate aerobic exercise (AE) or with a medium chain triglyceride (MCT) exogenous supplement. Ketone brain uptake increases in proportion to their plasma concentration. Thus, providing a daily ketogenic fuel could help support brain energy needs during aging. Our aim was to optimize the type of MCT to use in a ketogenic supplementation and to combine this supplement with another ketogenic strategy, AE. In the first phase of this project, the acute ketogenic effect of products derived from coconut oil was compared. Nine healthy adults took various MCT supplements (coconut oil, caprylic acid [C8], capric acid [C10], classic MCT mix [C8+C10]). Blood was sampled every 30 min over 8 h. In the second phase, we evaluated the acute ketogenic potential of the combination of AE and MCT supplementation. Ten healthy older women took C8+C10 MCT supplement for 5 days combined with a 5-days AE program. Automated spectrophotometric assays where used to measure plasma ketones under these different conditions. Our results show that in this 8 h experimental design, C8 was the most ketogenic MCT followed by C8+C10. Coconut oil alone did not induce more net ketosis than an 8 h visit with no added MCT. Furthermore, the combination of AE and MCT supplementation enhanced the ketogenic response over 4 h compared to the control day. Thus, the combination of ketogenic strategies, both in terms of the diversity of the molecules or the ketogenic strategy employed, makes it possible to increase the presence of ketones in the blood.

Full textThe purpose of this dissertation is to contribute to the field of building materials for the construction industry, by developing research on renewable building materials that are environmentally friendly. Materials are made with low cement and using local materials such as clay and waste natural fiber, formation through the process of extrusion technology. The long-term goal is finding new materials environmentally friendly building made from local materials to improve the quality of performance, speed up the building and reduce construction costs. The first study examined the physical, mechanical, thermal and microstructure of natural fibers of coir fiber that is widely available in Indonesia. Then, in terms of coir fiber ratio treated and untreated. Furthermore, it is developing Weibull models to get models tensile strength of the single coir fiber. The second study, designed the formulation of coir fiber reinforced cement and clay of composite materials to formed through a process of the extrusion technology spiral. After that, rheological testing rheometer used to examine the impact on the behavior of fiber cement paste stabilized with clay. Then, it analyzed to derive predictive models of the yield stress of composite materials. The third study, inspect mechanical extrusion product performance, using destructive mechanical testing system (MTS) and using non-destructive testing methods with digital image correlation (DIC). Then, develop mechanical models and micromechanical models of fiber composites. To get the characterization of micro-components are testing by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The evolution of failure and damage observed micro cracks. The results obtained from this study, the performance of coir fiber can be improved through treatment and obtained a single fiber tensile strength models. Furthermore, the formula obtained extrusion products fiber composite materials can extrude without defects on the surface. Also, it obtained rheological models to predict the yield stress fiber composites. The addition of coir fiber increases the compressive strength and tensile strength than plain mortar. Failure and damage evolution of fiber composite is more resilient than the plain mortar. Similarly, it obtained mechanical models of the fiber effects and micromechanical models of compressive strength and tensile strength of the fiber composite. The resulting model compared with experimental data results of MTS and DIC, are giving significant results. The resulting building material is environmentally friendly materials, ductile and highly suitable for buildings in earthquake areas

Full textOur researches were about the elimination of diuron in aqueous solution. It is concerned the degradation exclusively by the TiO2 under artificial and solar irradiation, either by adsorption on the activated carbon prepared from coconut shells. The influence of the catalyst concentration, pollutant mass and inorganic ions in solution (as well nitrate, ammonium and sulphate) has been studied. We brought to the fore that the disappearance of diuron followed the model of Langmuir-Hinshelwood like many other pollutants. The presence of ions has little influence on the photocatalytic activity of catalyst. The use of catalyst and especially re-use supported catalyst on cellulose materials under solar irradiation without loss of photocatalytic activity made it possible to show that the process is applicable industrially. With the aim of develop the natural resources of the ivory Coast some activated carbons have been prepared from coconut shells according two methods of activation. These materials developed a good porosity of meso and micro porosity. Specific surfaces are comprised between 200 and 1300 m2.g-1. These surfaces are important and tests of Boehm showed that all these carbons contain many surface functions. These functions are mainly lactone and carboxylic acid. The kinetic studies of the diuron revealed that these carbons showed a good affinity with pollutant. However the activated carbons have a better diffusion physically in relation to those gotten by the chemical method. We showed that these two techniques of water treatment are especially the best methods peasants in way of the Third World countries

Full textIn recent years, the development of advanced high performance composite materials made from natural fibers was mainly focussed on achieving high modulus and strength materials. However, the high strength is not sufficient, as some of the materials possess brittle nature (the overall elongation to fracture is small), and one of the more important performance criterion should be the ability to absorb energy and resist impact loadings. The manner in which a composite material deforms and subjected to fractures depends upon both the chemical and mechanical properties of three basic constituents: the fibers, the matrix and a fine interphase region (sometimes referred to as the interface) responsible for assuring the bond between the matrix and fiber. Due to its unique properties and abundant in nature, lignocellulose based fibers are emerging as a preferred choice for scientific, engineering and commercial communities who were looking for sustainable materials in various applications. Though these fibers possess several advantages over synthetic fillers, adhesion between the fiber and matrix, moisture repellence, flame retardant properties etc are still challenging areas to be addressed. In this context a novel technique based on spray-dry- cure method to establish a hydrophobic sol-gel coating on the lignocellulosic coir fiber surface. The surface modification of lignocellulosic coir fibers was done with the use of low-pressure oxygen plasma, followed by the application of a spray-dry-cure sol–gel coating with the water and oil repellent organic–inorganic hybrid precursor fluoroalkyl-functional siloxane (FAS), with the aim of creating the extremely hydrophobic coir fiber surface. The plasma pre-treatment increased the effective concentration of the FAS network on the lignocellulosic coir fibers. The effectiveness of plasma treatment and FAS sol gel coating on the coir fiber was studied using different characterisation techniques such as contact angle analysis, water absorption studies, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The mechanical, morphological, rheological and thermal properties of different PP/EPDM blend formulations were carried out to find out optimum blend composition for composite preparation. The resulting composites based on polypropylene, EPDM and coir possess high impact strength properties and comparable tensile and flexural properties. The mechanical, morphological, rheological and thermal properties of PP/EPDM/Coir composites were studied in detail to examine the stability of the composites

Full textThe main goal of this thesis was to develop and validate protocols of mass spectrometry methods, which could be applied for determination and quantitation of low molecular weight metal compounds in plant liquids. Unfortunately, the amount of plant liquid (eg. xylem), which usually can be sampled after several weeks of fastidious plant cultivation, is in low microliters range (or lower), which make the method development difficult task. Thus, as a compromise, coconut (Cocos nucifera) water was chosen as a model for method development studies of plant endosperm metallome, as the amount of sample available for experiments is much higher. Based on the information available in literature the most commonly identified iron complexes were Fe-citrate ones and mixed complexes of iron with citrate and malate. The detailed study of formation of different complexes was carried out to evaluate their stability and equilibrium between them. Additionally different chromatographic columns were tested and elution condition were optimized to be used later on to the real samples. ESI MS condition were adjusted (positive or negative mode ionization) depending on chromatographic conditions used. The principal part of the thesis concerns the development of methods for characterization of the model sample. Influence of different sample treatment steps (filtration, centrifugation) and storage condition was studied. Also, sample preparation before HILIC separation was evaluated, and the separation conditions optimized on model complexes was tested. The quest of a generic analytical strategy for the standardless quantification of different low-molecular weight metal complexes by molecular mass spectrometry is pursued using the Isotope Dilution Analysis (IDA) with the addition of an isotope spike 58Fe in ionic form and HILIC-ICP-MS. The protocol was carefully studied in order to keep the original metal complexes in non-degraded way and achieve the formation of metal complexes with the excess of ligands present in the sample. Finally, the developed procedures were applied for characterisation and quantification of iron compounds in xylem samples of several plants. The plants chosen (Pisum sativum, Paspalum urvilleli, and Setaria parviflora) were hypertolerant or overaccumulating ones
