Abstract:
The article is on the recreation of the image of Chan master Huineng in four English translations of the Platform Sutra through the choice of personal pronouns. Adopting SysConc as analytical tool, the study looks at the use of personal pronouns and the image of Huineng recreated in each translation. In Wong (1930a), the use of we in combination with you presents Huineng as both friendly and authoritative; in Heng (1977b), Huineng tends to avoid personal pronouns and seems to be detached; in Cleary (1998b), Huineng is more involved in the interaction and uses many I’s as well as you; in Cheng (2011), Huineng speaks in an elegant way and uses generic one as personal reference. It is argued that both the choices of personal pronouns and the images of Huineng recreated can be better understood in terms of the context of translation.

Abstract:
Since sudden enlightenment in the Platform Sutra is over-emphasized and gradual practice is comparatively ignored by quite a number of scholars, this article is primarily intended to illustrate that for Huineng, gradual practice and sudden enlightenment are practically integrated, which has profound ethical implications. Furthermore, it goes a step further to explore how gradual practice is made possible, by using original material in the text and by introducing relevant theory from Daoism. It also addresses the question about transcendence of morality that some scholars raise. Through exploring the topics of virtue and knowledge in Huineng’s thought with the help of Daoist wisdom, I aim to show that, as sudden enlightenment is accompanied by gradual practice, virtue together with knowledge appear hand in hand in a “perfect” form, which also strengthens the feature of perfection revealed in Huineng’s ethical doctrine.

Abstract:
Abstract On Becoming a Person: A Therapist’s View of Psychotherapy published in 1961 is believed to be the most well-known book written by Carl Rogers, the quintessential humanistic psychologist and psychotherapist. Chapter 6 seems to represent the core of this book: What It Means to Become a Person? To this seminal question, Rogers gives a four-fold answer: A person who has become himself demonstrates the following qualities: openness to experience, trust in one’s own organism, an internal locus of evaluation, and willingness to be a process. Much of Rogers’ conception of a person who has emerged from therapy and become himself sounds familiar to Chinese readers who know Huineng, the real founder of Chan Buddhism in the eighth century China and Wang Yangming, a neo-Confucian philosopher in the 15th and 16th century China. This paper will try to present a brief comparative study of the concept and performance of a highly functional person who has become himself from the standpoint of Rogers, Huineng, Wang and Wilber. We will focus the discussion on two fundamental questions: What does it mean to become oneself (Who am I)? How do we actualize ourselves? After counseling tens of thousands of clients over a couple of decades, Carl Rogers (1902–1987) summarized as a psychotherapist that the various problems of his clients boil down to one search, “‘Who am I, really? How can I get in touch with this real self, underlying all my surface behavior? How can I become myself?” (Rogers, 2020, p. 108). From this Rogers extrapolates that the purpose of education, like counseling and psychotherapy, is to provide facility to allow students to become themselves. Like the client-centered therapy, which later is renamed as person-centered therapy (Rogers, 1980), the method in education is the student-centered approach (Rogers, 1951, 1961/2020). In the following I will elucidate the views and practices of Rogers, Huineng and Wang around the two questions: Who am I? How could I become myself?

Abstract:
Both Huineng and Martin Luther are religious reformers with great influence in the world. There are many similarities in their religious psychological thought, such as “equality of all beings”, “the bewilderment and the enlightenment in one’s mind”, “taking the cultivation of Xin as the most important”, “guidance”, and “rationalization”. However, because they are in different eras, cultures, religions, etc., their ideological differences are also very obvious, which are mainly manifested in: inside or outside, good or evil of human nature, turning suffering into pleasure currently or suffering in living for the happiness after death, no-grasping or grasping, for all beings or for oneself, without self or with self, etc.

Xie, Kun. "The Form of No-Form: Reconstructing Huineng in Two Paintings by Liang Kai." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/22694.

Full text
Abstract:
The authenticity and interpretation of two Sixth Patriarch paintings, traditionally attributed to Liang Kai, have long been debated by critical scholars. Because of the lack of inscriptions on the paintings to indicate the identity of the depicted figure, the association of him with the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism, Huineng, has shed much enigmatic light onto the decipherment of these two paintings’ motifs. While historical and literal traditions of Huineng in Zen Buddhism provide no conspicuous references, Zen’s art tradition, on the other hand, provides a more fascinating reading of the Sixth Patriarch paintings by formulating and reconstructing a paradigmatic figure of Huineng and Zen romanticism without restricting itself to historical and literal accuracy.

Abstract:
This paper explores the practical teachings found in the Dunhuang manuscript of the Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch and considers the possibility of practice within a doctrine of sudden enlightenment. Part One outlines how the doctrine of sudden enlightenment can be understood to undermine the purpose for practicing meditation. Part Two first makes a case for the position that practice is presupposed by the text regardless of the doctrine of sudden enlightenment. Next the paper argues for what type of meditation practice the Platform Sutra teaches is consistent with sudden enlightenment. The practice the Platform Sutra teaches is an intentionless, continuous, non-passive non-attachment while in the midst of dharmas that takes as its basis the suchness of things inherent in sentient beings.

The water use optimization and the efficient management of an irrigation system are critical in order to maximize farmers’ yields and profits, as well as to achieve an environmental sustainability. The purpose of this dissertation is the analysis of the physic and economic water productivity on Huinong Irrigation District, in the Yellow river basin, Northeast China, where both water scarcity and excess are a reality. This analysis was prepared using SEDAM model, which was developed to simulate the demand and delivery using multicriteria analysis to support decisions, regarding the delivery management improvement as well as the decrease of water demand. It was possible to analyse the use and impact in improvement scenarios and the utility and productivity values. In conclusion, with an improvement of the drainage and delivery systems it is possible to significantly reduce the non-beneficial water use and increase the beneficial, leading to an increase of the physic and economic water productivity. Keywords: water use, irrigation, water productivity, SEDAM model.

ABSTRACT This research takes Old House of Lin Family that has been dilapidated for 60 years in Huinan Community, Nanzi District, and Kaohsiung City as its research object. It intends to learn how the community is reused through endeavors from environmental volunteers and investment from outside resources and why this community is appraised by the community residents. Except substantial improvement on community environment, there is no longer any messy environmental corner. Further, the community residents are provided with a superior space for leisure activities, improvement on their living quality and level, and increase of awareness on environmental protection. Value Chain Analysis is employed by this research to target on activation and reusing plan of idle space of Old House of Lin Family. First, this research analyzes value activities that are planned to be implemented, so as to establish value chain of the activities. Second, together with data collected through field investigation and in-depth interview, this research describes in detail the whole plan process and proposes suggestions on further transformation and reusing of the community space. In accordance with result of this research, with regard to the reusing and transformation of community idle space, except planning from local development and its administrative office, resource input from upper-level government (such as Urban Development Bureau of Kaohsiung Government, District Office of Nanzi District, etc.) is required. In order to smoothly implement work on reusing and transformation of community idle space, community development association together with community administrative office may submit plan to the upper-level unit for verification and appropriation of expenditure. The plan is to be implemented by the community development association and community administrative office. Thus, this plan can be taken as a model of constructing community through public and private efforts. It not only integrates strengths of community volunteers, but also coordination from relevant civil engineering technicians and constructors. Further, through Program on Undergraduates Taking-root, the plan strengthens cooperation with relevant undergraduates from adjacent universities to improve landscaping and artistic atmosphere. This plan not only eliminates any messy environmental corner within this community, but also successfully activates and reuses the idle space of the community. Further, it provides the community residents with space for leisure activities and is beneficial to gather power of the community residents for promoting their initiative participation into the community issues. Keyword: community development, community environment, idle space, leisure space, value chain analysis.
