We have developed experiments and materials to model human genetics using rapid cycling Brassica rapa, also known as Fast Plants. Because of their self-incompatibility for pollination and the genetic diversity within strains, B. rapa can serve as a relevant model for human genetics in teaching laboratory experiments. The experiment presented here is a paternity exclusion project in which a child is born with a known mother but two possible alleged fathers. Students use DNA markers (microsatellites) to perform paternity exclusion on these subjects. Realistic DNA marker analysis can be challengi

It discusses clinical genetics services, including genetic testing and genetic counselling, which is defined as ‘a communications process which deals with human problems associated with the occurrence, or the risk of occurrence, of a genetic disorder in a family’. The chapter also provides information on resources for travel advice and other forms of patient support. Abstract:
Since 2007, the Evolutionary Studies (EvoS) program at the State University of New York at New Paltz has provided an interdisciplinary undergraduate educational experience to students, gaining a reputation as a high-impact academic program with the capacity to expose students from a wide variety of disciplines to Darwinian principles. In the summer of 2015, the program hosted its first-ever week-long EvoS Summer Institute for teachers. The Institute was modeled after New Paltz’s EvoS program, offering units that connect evolution with a variety of topics, including genetics, human origins, behavior, health, the arts, and more. An extensive anonymous survey of the participants provided evidence that the Institute met its educational goals of providing an enriching, powerful, and broad evolution education that is perceived as having the capacity to help advance the teaching of evolution. In this chapter, the authors provide various perspectives in describing the structure of the Institute along with outcomes related to advancing evolution education.

Chapter 11 brings a similar perspective to bear on schooling and education. It explains how what is defined as ability in schools consists largely of (a) informal attributions based on social class background that, in schools, become self-fulfilling; and (b) the consequences of a curriculum of largely irrelevant learning demanding doggedness and persistence, themselves based on class background. The chapter discusses evidence and consequences of this and shows how a mythological meritocracy continues across generations. The chapter also discusses some possible alternatives for providing “real” education.
