The purpose of this study was to describe various kinematic variables of the skating stride. A data set for five collegiate hockey players was completed (mean +/- SD: age = 22.0 +/- 1.0 years, height = 1.77 +/- 0.06 m, weight = 80.0 +/- 8.5 kg). Three velocities were examined on the skating treadmill: slow (12 km/hr), medium (18 km/hr) and fast (24 km/hr). Electrogoniometers at the hip (H), knee (K) and ankle (ANK) were used to acquire angular displacement and velocity profiles. Abstract:
The Na+,K+-ATPase (NKA) is a key protein involved in the maintenance of skeletal muscle excitability and comprises 2 subunits (α and β), each of which express multiple isoforms at a protein level in skeletal muscle (α1-3 and β1-3). The fibre-specific expression, adaptability and roles of each isoform in human skeletal muscle are explored in this thesis. Research utilising muscle biopsies typically uses samples obtained from the vastus lateralis muscle, which in healthy young people comprises similar proportions of type I and II fibres. Analyses using whole muscle pieces don’t allow the detecti

Along with the progress of the medical and robot technology, several robot walking helpers have been developed. It motivates us to develop a robot walking helper, named i-go, in our laboratory for assisting the lives of the elderly. In the thesis, we propose estimating the human state by analyzing the angles of the lower limbs and the center of gravity(COG) of human body, and develop the corresponding assistive strategies

Abstract:
In this paper we use multivariate statistical techniques to gain insights into how adaptive gait involving obstacle crossing is regulated in lower-limb amputees compared to able-bodied controls, with the aim of identifying underlying characteristics that differ between the two groups and consequently highlighting gait deficits in the amputees. Eight unilateral trans-tibial amputees and twelve able-bodied controls completed adaptive gait trials involving negotiating various height obstacles; with amputees leading with their prosthetic limb. The study of movement has always fascinated artists, photographers and researchers. Across the years, several attempts to capture, freeze, study and reproduce motion were made. Nowadays, motion capture plays an important role within many fields, from graphical animation, filmmaking, virtual reality, till medicine. In fact, movement analysis allows to measure kinematic and kinetic performance of the human body. The quantitative data obtained from measurements may support the diagnosis and treatment of many pathologies, allowing to take clinical decisions and supporting the follow-up of treatme

The motion of human knee joint motion is not a pure rotation. From kinematic viewpoint, the poloade or centrode is one of the most efficient ways to describe the kinetic characteristics of human knee joints. The discrete photograph method is the most common way to construct the polode of human knee joints in many studies. The accuracy is always the major issue that has to be improved. In this study
