Abstract:
In the face of global climate change, ecological disasters are unfolding one after another. Ecology has evolved from a scientific study of organisms’ relationships with their environments to a widely discussed public issue. The concerns have shifted from controlling nature to embracing ecological restoration and harmonious coexistence, including advocating for rewilding to restore spaces to their natural states. These shifts prompt reflection on the human-nature relationship. How can landscape design, a field blending science and art, engage with ecology? This paper examines the recent d

Can the environment be ill? A mere glance at what happens around us is enough to provide an answer. The next question that naturally pops up in our minds is: how to cure it? Now the answer is not so immediate, but demands more thorough analysis.
A first attempt at a solution might be to fight against everything we consider to be wrong. This is a typical human trend, however, the results are often not too efficient, because the impulse to “fight against” something triggers a kind of positive feedback or recursive effect - as the target always reacts - thus giving rise to a degenerativ

ABSTRACT Wheat flour was treated with α-amylase at 5, 7.5 and 10 ppm levels to prepare betifore-type cookies. The rheological properties of dough and sensory properties of betifore were evaluated. Physical properties of betifore prepared with 7.5 ppm α-amylase were also evaluated. Water absorption of dough was not affected by treating wheat flour with α-amylase. Dough stability, (P) value, (P/L) ratio and (W) value were decreased by treating wheat flour with α-amylase, whereas the (L) value showed an opposite trend. At a time when almost every human transgression, illness, profession and other personal aspect of life has been chronicled in autobiographical writing (Rak)—in 1998 Zinsser called ours “the age of memoir” (3)—writing about fat is one of the most recent subjects to be addressed in this way. This article surveys a range of contemporary autobiographical texts that are titled with, or revolve around, that powerful and most evocative word, “fat”. Following a number of cultural studies of fat in society (Critser; Gilman, Fat Boys; Fat: A Cultural History; Stearns), this discussion views fat in socio

Introduction With a deluge of mouthwatering pre-publicity, the opening of The Spotted Pig, the USA’s first self-identified British-styled gastropub, in Manhattan in February 2004 was much anticipated. The late Australian chef, food writer and restauranteur Mietta O’Donnell has noted how “taking over a building or business which has a long established reputation can be a mixed blessing” because of the way that memories “can enrich the experience of being in a place or they can just make people nostalgic”. Abstract:
Abstract The Standardized Plant Analysis Risk-Human Reliability Analysis (SPAR-H) method is widely applied in human reliability analysis (HRA) within the nuclear industry. Through expert judgment and predefined multipliers, SPAR-H calculates human error probabilities (HEPs) by quantifying the impacts exerted by performance shaping factors (PSFs). These multipliers adjust the nominal HEPs to account for specific situational factors within nuclear power plant operations. However, SPAR-H’s neglect of dependencies among PSFs often leads to unrealistic HEP estimates, underscoring a critical limitat

A relationship between the quality of environment and incidence of human health has been recognized in recent years. While the diseases such as carcinogenesis, respiratory diseases, skin disorders are often correlated with exposure to environmental toxins, the possibility of a link between blood coagulation and chemical contaminants in food, water and air has rarely been suspected. Wide usage of DDT in public health and plant protection programmes have led to a considerably higher levels of the pesticide in the blood and body fat of Indian population.
