Abstract:
For equipment or plant replacement, when to replace an existing plant, fleet or a part of it, is one of the main concerns in decision-making. The thesis considers this decision-making problem using capital replacement models with a fixed planning horizon, and we took at the behaviour of optimal policy in this context. Application of the models is considered and we compare replacement models with a fixed planning horizon with replacement models with a variable planning horizon models comprising of two cycles. Inherited retinal dystrophies resulting in the death of the light sensitive photoreceptor cells are a major cause of incurable blindness. Loss of the cone photoreceptor cells, which are crucial for colour detection, daylight vision and high visual acuity, has the greatest impact on sight. Retinal differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) provides a potential renewable source of cone photoreceptors for cell replacement therapy. There is an unmet medical need in the treatment of gout. This type of inflammatory arthritis can be efficiently alleviated by the enzyme uricase. Research on therapeutic uricases has focused on using enzymes from naturally occurring sources; however, these foreign proteins can be very antigenic and present a potentially life-threatening safety risk to patients.
