Full textMany studies on XIV and XV century Florentine humanism, even when they accept the importance of rhetoric tradition, mainly the Latin rhetoric tradition, in humanists educational background and works from these centuries, see this rhetoric tradition just as a tool which hides humanists true and sincere beliefs, forming a gap between their works and their political realities and making the works of these early humanists a somewhat embarrassing and dangerous historical source for historians. This work seeks to analyze some works of two Florentine humanists from XIV and XV centuries: Leonardo Bruni Aretino e Lino Coluccio Salutati, from a critical historiographical view on Hans Barons thesis on civic Humanism (1955 and 1966) and Quentin Skinners historical and theoretical writings (1999a, 2007 and 2007a), as well as the writings of other ancient and modern authors who have also written about many and important relations between language, politics and history. It aims to identify the classical rhetoric tradition present and active in both humanists production not as an element that keeps them away from their political realities and hides their true and sincere beliefs, but as a mean through which these humanists created new concepts and new vocabulary that contributed not only to shape the cultural and political reality in which Coluccio Salutati and Leonardo Bruni lived and actively took part, in Italy and in Europe, but that have also contributed to form the occidental political thought.

Abstract: This thesis presents the Portuguese commented translation of Francesco Patrizi's Della historia diece dialoghi, an ars historica published in Venice in 1560. It is complemented by a study which is aimed at emphasizing the most relevant aspects of this text: a critical review of the main humanistic ideas on history, essentially founded on the statements pronounced by auctoritates like Cicero and Lucian, and the proposal of a union of historical and philosophical knowledge as useful means to the ultimate end of the political community, the civil happiness. The dialogical scene also brings the contributions from the Florentine political thought of the first half of the Cinquecento, sided with the defense of Venetian political tradition (formulated in a utopian background), and the result is a kind of fusion that gives this ars historica a unique profile among the many works which belong to this literary genre.

Antoni Cerdà was born in Majorca around the year 1390. At the time of his death, which occurred in Rome on the 12th of September 1459, he was a canon in diverse dioceses, bishop of Lleida, and cardinal, and he furthermore possessed a large number of benefices and other prebends in the Crown of Aragon. Cerdà had had an impressive career in the ecclesiastical hierarchy, which allowed him to receive abundant incomes and the social advancement of his own family. The reasons behind this advancement must be sought in the bonds that united Antoni Cerdà, the popes Nicholas V, Callixtus III and Pius II, and the king Alfonso the Magnanimous, and in the wide knowledge in Theology that he had achieved. They also seem to lie behind some details added to Antoni Cerdà’s life, some of which lack any historical basis, and others that appear to be the result of confusion. These details have been disseminated for centuries. It is therefore indispensable to critically revise the biography of Antoni Cerdà.

In this regard, this monographic work, at first, aims to understand Fernando de Azevedoþs movement and thinking particularities along of his trajectory, as well as to focus his humanist conception expressed in his work produced between 1944 and 1955 and, on the other side, to elucidate the uniqueness of these movement andthinking based on a scientific humanism conception, in accordance with these educational philosophy which were present in the educational renovation movement between 1930 and 1955 contributing to the understanding of the educational philosophy constitution in Brazil. Therefore, this work analyses Fernando de Azevedoþs trajectory in a didactic way. Nevertheless, the main emphasis is in the third moment, in which we have a more mature Azevedo with his humanism conception formed. However, in every one of these periods, it was attempted to establish the uniqueness and disagreements of his thinking about education. On this account, this research intends to reconstitute the humanist sense presents in Fernando de Azevedoþs political-educational discourse, understanding its philosophical bases and the eduational philosophy that bases him.

Full textThis Study had the objective of showing the vision of the New Humanism of Mario Schenberg, due to its importance in the horizon of the Brazilian Vanguards from the 1960´s and 1970´s decades, as well as its relation to the New Humanism, also developed by the art critic during this period. The involvement of Schenberg in the debate of the 1960´s and 1970´s decades was analyzed, based on his actuation on the expositions Opinião 65, Propostas 65, Opinião 66, Propostas 66, as well as in the São Paulo Biennials (1961, 1965, 1967, 1969 e 1971). This study considered by primary sources the original critics of the Centro Mario Schenberg de Documentação da Pesquisa em Arte ECA/USP written in these two decades, as well as the rest of the books, articles and interviews of the critic. Considered by Mario Schenberg the artistic expression of the New Humanism, the New Realism was defined from a parallel horizon: result of an industrial society and a reflex of an occidental culture in crisis, this tendency reflected in a moment of referential amplifications. Mario Schenberg knew how to comprehend the demands of the rising art, in which, his critical activities were not made by judgment and evaluation, but as comprehension and incentive.

Abstract: Norbert Elias's work allows various analyses and interpretations and authors are used to analyzing and exploring it based on distinct theoretical points of reference. Thus, I have chosen one among the many possible ways, that is, this research was carried out to analyze the humanistic features and the philosophical concepts and bases found in Norbert Elias's thought system. That was accomplished by means of bibliographical research, with works which mention the mode of his thinking and, finally, by the interpreters who serve as aid, source of confrontation of information and ideas in order to understand Elias's theory and thought system. The course to be followed is to run through the type of humanism found in Elias's works. Afterwards, to find out the philosophical bases and concepts trying to oppose, compare, and justify the readings carried out by those interpreters in order to decode Elias's thought system and, consequently, seek the humanistic features found in his works. In short, this research was carried out to show that the thought of the German sociologist Norbert Elias presents many humanistic features which permeate his works and, consequently, his way of thinking, and one could even confirm that he is a humanist in his philosophical conception. Although we agree with the idea that, within compass , Philosophy of Education is a philosophical anthropology and we refer to humanism, we neither take that definition and that subject as a means to previously identify Elias's concepts, nor preconceive it; on the contrary, we intend to give priority, as subject, to the author's own work, written from 1930 to 1990. By interpreting selected texts, we will re-establish his humanistic conception, identifying his philosophical sources.

Miguel Torga (1907-1995), one of the most important Portuguese writers of the twentieth century, is situated between Presencismo and Portuguese Neorealism, surpassing the limitations of both literary movements and, through his language, encompasses individual subjectivism and social concerns, providing him with a universal character. We will analyze Novos Contos da Montanha (1944), with the intention of pondering on Torga’s literature and comprehending the expression Man in his short narratives, as well as in his verse and autobiographic texts, with the support of critics such as Eduardo Lourenço, José de Melo and Carlos Carranca. Our analysis is guided by three elements (tellurism, religiosity and suffering). Even though these elements can be found in all of the twenty two stories of that collection, we justify this to better undertand the artist’s literary project, which we name torguian humanism
