Abstract:
Discrimination, unjust economic policies and violent regimes continue in the 21st century. This book exposes politicians' cruel motives and the resulting outcomes. The book begins with an overview of the role of cruelty in politics, in the design and implementation of state policies and in non-state responses. Cruel acts and policies are worldwide, though the United Nations has set prohibitions on cruelty which represent global standards. If truths about worldwide cruelties become evident, the elimination of such practices should become a key consideration in any future crafting of policies an

Abstract:
There are few literary authors in whose work animals and other creatures play as prominent a role as they do in Franz Kafka's. Exploring multiple dimensions of Kafka's incorporation of nonhuman creatures into his writing, this volume is the first collection in English of essays devoted to illuminating this important and ubiquitous dimension of his work. The chapters here are written by an array of international scholars from various fields, and represent a diversity of interpretive approaches. This chapter examines the thinking, speaking, highly anthropomorphized animals found in previous-life stories of the Buddha (jātakas)—more specifically, those that populate the Pāli Jātakaṭṭhavaṇṇanā. It demonstrates that these speaking animals often speak about the suffering of animals at humanity’s hands, using the human power of speech to condemn human cruelty, exploitation, and abuse of the nonhuman animal world. The chapter analyzes multiple Pāli jātakas, arranged around the themes of meat-eating, hunting, animal sacrifice, and legal prosecution of animals. In addition to the ability to s

Abstract:
The world is in crisis. The people of the world are all connected, and rely on one another to make ethical decisions and to solve civic problems together. Ethics and civics have always mattered, but it is becoming more evident how much they matter. Teaching ethics and civics is essential to the future. This book argues that games can encourage the practice of ethics and civics. They can help people to connect, deliberate, reflect, and flourish. They can help people to reimagine systems and solve problems. Games are communities and public spheres. Like all communities, they may encourage care,
