Abstract:
In this paper, we explore what architectural practice and, more specifically, the architectural research domain, may gain from the theoretical and methodological premise of anthropology and ethnography. The paper explores a historical link between anthropology and architecture as academic disciplines, arguing that the disciplines are aligned through anthropology’s search for understanding the conditions of humanity and architecture’s role in forming these very conditions. We do not intend to explicate the individual disciplines but are interested in the crossover between the two and, more specifically, what insights anthropology and ethnography may offer to the discipline of architecture. We consider the relationship between anthropology and architecture, as both a research domain and a profession, and question how anthropology—as an approach to research more so than a discipline—can contribute to the advancement of architectural practice and research.

Abstract:
After completing architectural studies in the United States in 1952, Muzharul Islam returned home to Pakistan to find the country embroiled in acrimonious politics of national identity. The young architect began his design career in the midst of bitterly divided notions of national origin and destiny, and his architectural work reflected this political debate. In Modernism as Postnationalist Politics: Muzharul Islam's Faculty of Fine Arts (1953–56), Adnan Morshed argues that Islam's Faculty of Fine Arts at Shahbagh, Dhaka, embodied his need to articulate a national identity based on the secular humanist ethos of Bengal, rather than on an Islamic religious foundation. With this iconoclastic building, Islam sought to achieve two distinctive goals: to introduce the aesthetic tenets of modern architecture to East Pakistan and to reject all references to colonial-era Indo-Saracenic architecture. The Faculty's modernism hinges on Islam's dual commitment to a secular Bengali character and universal humanity.

Abstract:
This paper presents the modern architecture in the current century. Modern architecture is a new architectural style that emerged in many countries in the decade after World War I. It was based on the “rational” use of modern materials, the principles of functionalist planning, and the rejection of historical precedent and ornament. Modern architecture was adopted by many influential architects and an architectural educator, gained popularity after the Second World War, and continues as a dominant architectural style for institutional and corporate buildings in the 21st century. According to this research, The Modern movement also referred to controversially as a style by some bound morality, technology and art together. Morality in that there was an aim to improve humanity's lot, notably whole scale demolition of slums to make way for clean modern housing. This paper presents the role of modernism in architecture. In this paper has been shown the influence of modernism in humanity and countries.

As Matevz Celik recognizes, “through his architecture he worked to provide responses to the needs of the people — for whom it was intended. This basic premise served as a guiding principle in experiments and his search for spatial and social innovation in architecture."

Abstract:
We can find certain parallelism between architecture and sport in history (Rome) and in contemporaneity with spectacular sport as most global kind of entertainment, and recognizable sport architecture as sign of its universal presence. London Olympic Games 2012 followed slogan "Architecture for Humanity", adding ecological and social concern to more traditional idea of sport objects as modern cathedrals. Sport architecture has become a statement, and it embodies ideology which turns sport into reason for hope. Sport architecture is created on the field where standardization of space (and time) exists for more than hundred years, together with concentration of power in sport associations which, during these hundred years, changed their identity from civil society movements into capital enterprise institutions. Original meaning of "sport" (desportes, deport) as activity deported beyond regular and ordinary everyday life was extended into new region of space and time where mass media entertainment is produced. Contemporary sport architecture has to follow specifically sport rules for playground space, and rules of media presence. Sport places are spaces where massive audience watches the game, and were it watches itself watching - to be seen by massive media audience whose virtual presence is perhaps today the most important concern of architectural design for sport.

Abstract:
As one of the build environment’s products, the existence of the building has a positive and negative contribution towards the surrounding. Along with the emerging of the environmental problems, the architecture sector offers the implementation of the sustainable architecture concept of each architecture object include the traditional and modern building. The application of this concept is the solution to solve the environment, social and economic problems which keep emerging. The aim of this concept is the improvement of the quality of those three aspects and the life of humanity itself. This research aims to find the implementation of sustainable architecture’s theory on the vernacular mosque in Aceh. Masjid Tuha, Indrapuri, Aceh Besar is the object of the research. The method is descriptive qualitative which describes the result of observation. The observation is based on the research instrument. The result shows that Masjid Tuha, Indrapuri, Aceh Besar applies 20 of 34 sustainable architecture’s indicators. The cultural conservation aspect implements the most numerous signs which mean the existence of the vernacular building itself is one concept of sustainable architecture. However, some other implementations need to be improved to get the best quality of execution.

It is difficult to say who and when the first had an idea to use mechanical systems in the architecture and interior design. Until recently, we could see constructions capable to change its geometric shape only in space and military industries: solar satellites, self-opening tent and life rafts, etc. Understanding that the convertible construction can be the starting element of the architectural object, appeared at the beginning of twentieth century.Schemes of device transformed volumes as many as there are various mechanisms invented by humanity in its history. Therefore, in this area offers an endless field for constructive and architectural work.

Abstract:

People use a variety of means to orient themselves towards the future. A more organised approach to handling the future known as "futures studies" is often used in a variety of contexts including long-term planning within large organisations. In the effort to enhance the quality of such studies, there have been arguments for better methods (which makes sense), but methods may not be the most important aspect in the production of futures studies. Greater theoretical awareness in the substantive questions upon which the study is based is more important. To that end, the intent of this dissertation is to infuse a keener awareness of fundamental assumptions in futures studies and contribute to increasing their quality.

One objective of the dissertation is to formulate a method or procedure to analyse the futures studies of large organisations, apply it to two empirical cases and thereafter analyse its strengths and weaknesses. The method I discuss and develop extensively in this work consists of an analytical framework that focuses on three aspects of each future study: its architecture, its relationship to a few of the key future issues of our time and its assumptions regarding our views on society, humanity and technology. A second objective is to systematically study future documents from two large organisations and attempt to clarify motives, orientation, methodology and distinguishing characteristics in their future processes. The cases I have chosen are the Swedish Armed Forces and the telecommunications company Ericsson, which were both in a period of transition around the mid 1990s.

The dissertation shows how the method has been used to bring to the fore and clarify central ideas in futures studies, identify ambiguities and fuzzy thinking and to show and expose more covert assumptions. The analysis also illustrates that certain aspects of the model have been observed in the empirical material, other ideas are found to a lesser extent and certain perspectives are entirely absent. The paper stresses that the model developed has both strengths and weaknesses, but the overall assessment is that it was well-balanced and maintains appropriate depth in relation to desired efficiency. The study shows that the analytical method is relevant and adequate to understand and describe the direction and content of futures studies and in so doing enhance their quality.

In high density urban areas where the land acquisition and construction cost components are significant relative to total development costs, the market typically supplies a high-income housing product in order to justify the risks for new construction. In places such as New York, Tokyo, London and other land supply restricted cities, the effect of these rising costs has forced the unsubsidized middle-class to migrate further and further from the center of the city where most of the infrastructural area amenities and jobs are located. This causes extended commuting times that result in the exacerbation of pollution and wasted allocation of resources. In effect, the overall function of the city grows more inefficient. All the while, the demographic texture of the central city becomes a polarized gathering of the wealthy elite and the service oriented subsidized poor. The lack of income diversity results in a spatial built form that also mimics this polarized condition. In these circumstances, might there be a strategy for encouraging a housing prototype that specifically targets the broad middle class market in order for cities to maintain diverse communities, a tapestry of spatial form, and a more efficient competitive city. The hypothesis is that if housing occupancy levels can be doubled from what is currently allowed within spaces that are tighter than typical American standards, then middle-income affordability can be achieved without diminishing design quality. This thesis investigates what flexible spatial possibilities there may be for middle-income housing based on a series of design priorities that are underpinned with an approach that advocates for a more intense occupancy use per unit of housing. Due to the augmented use intensity, flexibly designed elements are built within the spatial form of each unit. Each design variation is subsequently tested against a private sector based feedback mechanism that measures the affordability range that the design can offer. This iterative tool reveals what income groups can be supplied due to the design changes put forth by the varying design priorities. It is the hope that this tool will enable architects, developers, and the capital markets to understand the trade-offs made from both a spatial form perspective as well as a market perspective in order to ultimately enhance the condition of the built environment.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to re-analyze the early twentieth century modern architecture, with in the frame work of posthumanism. Referring to the materialist and socioconstructive architecture of Hannes Meyer, the study proposes a shift from humanist ways of production and reception to posthumanism, where the centrality of human in the productive processes of both art and life is questioned. With this respect, the thesis proposes a historical continuity with the post 1960&

Within this framework the thesis, via proposing the book by Michael Hays: Modernism and the Posthumanist Subject: The Architecture of Hannes Meyer and Ludwig Hilberseimer as a pretext, argues that the modern architecture&

Ozten, Ulku. "New Monumentality." Master's thesis, METU, 2005. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/2/12606932/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
&ldquo
New monumentality&rdquo
is a term which was first introduced to architectural discourse by Sigfried Giedion, Jose Luis Sert, and Fernand Lé
ger right after the post-World War II in the early forties. The effect of the term comes from the polemical power of reformulation of the accustomed category &ldquo
monument&rdquo
within the field of the modern architecture. In this way, as it is shaped by the three authors, for the first time &ldquo
New Monumentality&rdquo
had been identified as a modern task under the name of Nine Points on Monumentality in 1943. Therefore, this thesis is mainly grounded on this significant text that is a primary manifestation of the need for the new monumentality. On these bases, that the manifesto is stressed an effort to determine the ethics of the post war modern architecture regarding: historicism, functionalism, and representation. This thesis seeks to clarify the self-critical frame which is unfolded by the manifesto within the context of the modern architecture. Thus, the first one of the three objectives of this thesis is to clarify the concept of new monumentality
the second one is to locate its position in the history of modern architecture
and the third one is to differentiate proposed and unintended outcomes of this movement within the contemporary discourses of architecture.

Abstract:
The monograph, on the one hand, examines the period of development of the descending cycle of evolution and the associated progressive changes that show the irreversibility of the processes of formation of the planetary system. The end of one cycle and the beginning of another leads to the transformation of the system of life and the expansion of consciousness at a new energy level. On the other hand, the questions of potential opportunities for the development of the ascending phase of evolution, which goes both along the path of complexity of the organization and along the path of diversity, are considered. In the ascending evolutionary stream, what has been differentiated into the corresponding levels in the descending cycle is brought together and thus prepared to enter into new, more perfect forms of unity. It is shown that the development of humanity along its entire path depends on the interaction of energies of various forms and potentials. Understanding the relationships between different types of energy and their use provides insight into many important issues in the evolution of society. The material introduces the modern features of the existence of the male and female sexes from the energy point of view. The idea of a way out of the current conflict situation that has arisen between the sexes at the present stage of evolution is proposed. It will be useful for those interested in the problems of scientific knowledge, architects, philosophers, historians, physicists and methodologists of science, students and students of secondary schools.

AbstractTo supervise and enjoy the benefits of digitalization, humanity must develop the science of augmented agency. This future science will be multidisciplinary, joining the human and computer sciences, as well as neuroscience and related fields of human science and engineering, but also going further. In fact, the novelties of digital augmentation transcend the conceptual architecture of modernity and its problematics. Digitalized humanity is truly exceptional. To describe these phenomena, science needs fresh concepts, categories, and constructs. This chapter offers proposals in this regard. It maps the emerging field of augmented agency, its core categories, mechanisms, and dilemmas, and thereby looks forward to a new science of digitally augmented agency.

Abstract:
AbstractNuclear deterrence is an integral aspect of the current security architecture and the question has arisen whether adoption of AI will enhance the stability of this architecture or weaken it. The stakes are very high. Stable deterrence depends on a complex web of risk perceptions. All sorts of distortions and errors are possible, especially in moments of crisis. AI might contribute toward reinforcing the rationality of decision-making under these conditions (easily affected by the emotional disturbances and fallacious inferences to which human beings are prone), thereby preventing an accidental launch or unintended escalation. Conversely, judgments about what does or does not suit the “national interest” are not well suited to AI (at least in its current state of development). A purely logical reasoning process based on the wrong values could have disastrous consequences, which would clearly be the case if an AI-based machine were allowed to make the launch decision (this virtually all experts would emphatically exclude), but grave problems could similarly arise if a human actor relied too heavily on AI input.

Abstract:
AbstractThe controversial question of whether machines may ever be conscious must be based on a careful consideration of how consciousness arises in the only physical system that undoubtedly possesses it: the human brain. We suggest that the word “consciousness” conflates two different types of information-processing computations in the brain: the selection of information for global broadcasting, thus making it flexibly available for computation and report (C1, consciousness in the first sense), and the self-monitoring of those computations, leading to a subjective sense of certainty or error (C2, consciousness in the second sense). We argue that despite their recent successes, current machines are still mostly implementing computations that reflect unconscious processing (C0) in the human brain. We review the psychological and neural science of unconscious (C0) and conscious computations (C1 and C2) and outline how they may inspire novel machine architectures.

Abstract:
Abstract: This paper aims to study the role of the relationships between architecture, music and mathematics in Le Corbusier's thought and work and their relevance in his reinterpretation of classical thinking. It seeks to understand to what extent working with this triad – a foundational and, up until the seventeenth century, dogmatic aspect of architecture in general and of its aesthetics in particular – expresses a will not to break with the fundamental and defining aspects of what could be considered as architectural thought rooted in classical tradition: that which is governed by the will to follow the universal order in the work of art; building a microcosmos according to the macrocosmos; linking, in proportion to one another, the universe, man and architecture. The Modulor presents itself as a manifestation of that will, synthesizing these aspects while proposing itself as an instrument for interdisciplinary thought and practice in which the aforementioned aspects of classical thought are present, clearly and pronouncedly. Le Corbusier’s thought and work presents itself as a twentieth century memory of an ancient and ever present tradition conscious of its struggle for “humanity”. Keywords: Le Corbusier; Architecture, music and mathematics; classical thought; Modulor. Palabras clave: Le Corbusier; Arquitectura, música y mathematica; pensamiento clásico; Modulor. Abstract:
The fact that humanity realized the damage it caused to the environment and expressed the situation in scientific meetings has led to the emphasis on the importance of sustainability and to determine the measures and targets to be taken. Considering the future, the measures to be taken and the systems to be implemented in the environment we live in to prevent environmental problems have great importance. The success of sustainability activities on a global scale is possible with the integration of sustainability studies at different scales by harmonizing with each other. The sustainability that will be provided at the residential settlement / neighborhood scale will greatly help to achieve success in urban areas too. The study will focus on examples of sustainable new settlements located outside the city, on the periphery of the city or within the city, as well as existing sustainable settlements that have been transformed and improved in the city. An evaluation will be made on the basis of which principles these settlements have been designed and implemented. In sustainable settlements, the role of the architect in the context of social dynamics will be questioned and inferences about where the architect is located in sustainable settlement design will be evaluated.
