Abstract:
The article analyzes the scientific career of Alexander von Humboldt. The scientist researched the junction of science and philosophy, set up experiments to study organic life, testing his theory of “life force”. The result of his work was the essay “On irritated muscle and nerve fiber”. The philosophical essay “Life-Force, or the Genius of Rhodes” reveals Humboldt's literary talent. In this essay, in literary form, the problem of “life force” and understanding the essence of life was raised. And it’s not by chance, since Humboldt’s texts have a complete aesthetic character, which allowed him as a scientist to capture life itself as the phenomena of nature. Being and nature, according to the scientist, are not divided into separate parts and their separation is purely objective, while nature itself is one unit. This understanding of the integrity of nature (including humans) is also at the heart of the project of the model of university education, which he and his brother Wilhelm von Humboldt founded in Berlin and whose main principle was the unity of basic research and teaching. Subsequently, such an attitude allowed universities to simultaneously become scientific centers of their country, performing, among other things, state tasks. The article notes that Humboldt’s scientific research was highly appreciated not only by his contemporaries philosophers but also by writers, such as Goethe and Schiller.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the birth and transformation of the Idea of the University as an institutional form within the German spiritual culture of the 19th – 20th centuries. The author traces the history of the Idea of the University from the works of I. Kant (through the prism of his idea of the Enlightenment), then in the works of W. von Humboldt, the attempt to revive the Idea in the works of K. Jaspers, and the death of the idea during Nazism on the example of the “Heidegger case” The article specifically examines the basic principles of the University of W. von Humboldt – academic freedom and unity of science and education. The latter is considered not in a narrow academic sense, but in the classical – the formation of a person's image, chasing his appearance. W. von Humboldt assumed the unity of three universes: the universe of man, the universe of knowledge and the university as an institution that creates conditions for “solitude and freedom”. Further, the author shows the transformation of the university in the modern world in connection with the change in the time vector, the reorientation of the educational paradigm from the past to the future and the search, in this connection, of a new identity for universities. Despite the actual death of the classical idea of the University of W. von Humboldt, the author shows that this idea can be revived in a new model of an entrepreneurial university, which also contains the basic principle of W. von Humboldt, which presupposes a constant scientific search and the formation of a person for whom personal development remains a value.

Abstract:
The name ‘Humboldt’ is associated with various ideals such as the unity of teaching and research, the freedom to teach and to learn and the community of teachers and students and used to stand for a unified idea of the university. Recent developments and changes like widening participation in and the marketisation of higher education related to the emergence of neoliberalism have challenged those old ideals. Through creating a Humboldt University model based on Humboldtian ideals and a Neoliberal University model reflecting neoliberal ideas the study seeks to illustrate the main changes that have happened. It then evaluates the developments by putting them against the German (the origin of Humboldt’s ideas) and English university (the first to marketise higher education). The ones to sense the developments and changes the most are the university academics. Therefore, it was chosen to review the former through the eyes of the latter. Thus, the study offers a glimpse of how university academics at the German and English institution/institute perceive the changes deriving from comparing the above-mentioned model. How do they relate to the Humboldtian ideals? How do they evaluate recent developments and related discourses in higher education? Are there connections between the countries’ university traditions and their perception? The main findings suggest that academics at the English institute believe more in the old ideals than the German academics who blame mainly massification for its infeasibility. It also shows that recent discourses and their termination are understood differently by the academics. For a new unifying idea of the university, opposing perceptions like the ones examined would need to be brought in line. Can there be one identity of the university?

Harpaz, Ziv.

Full text
Abstract:
Native chemical ligation continues to lead as the method of choice for the total chemical synthesis of proteins. Despite the methods broad use the method requirement for a terminal cysteine residue remains its biggest disadvantage. N-alpah-auxiliaries have long been used to overcome this inherent hindrance by acting as cysteine mimics. The method however has still not achieved broad use due to several key issues. In the first part of the thesis a new class of N-alpha-auxiliaries is presented. The auxiliaries are straightforwardly synthesized, readily introduced onto the peptide building blocks and cleaved under mild basic conditions. Model tests were carried out to evaluate the auxiliaries’ characteristics and their removal chemistry was developed. Finally, the auxiliary was utilized for the synthesis of the antimicrobial C-terminal domain of Dermicidine. Solid phase chemical ligation has grown in popularity in the recent years. Benefitting from the solid-phase inherent purification characteristic it allows for multiple peptide fragments to be ligated in a sequential fashion to yield the full length protein target in high purity. In the second part of the dissertation the concept of solid phase chemical ligation is expanded beyond the cysteine junction using a “second generation” auxiliary. MUC1 protein variable tandem repeats domain was synthesized using auxiliary-assisted solid phase chemical ligation.

Heinze, Martin. "Spectrum and quantum symmetries of the AdS5 × S5 superstring." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/17257.

Full text
Abstract:
The initial AdS/CFT duality pair, the duality between N=4 SYM and the AdS_5 × S^5 superstring, appears to enjoy quantum integrability in the planar limit, which allowed to devise powerful methods ostensibly solving the spectral problem. However, quantization of the AdS_5 × S^5 superstring from first principles is still an open question and especially the spectrum of short string states has previously been derived only at leading order in large ''t Hooft coupling. In this thesis we investigate possible routes to quantize short string states perturbatively beyond the leading order, where equally our aim is to gain better appreciation of the quantum symmetries at play. A prominent role is played by the lowest excited string states, dual to the Konishi supermultiplet, and we start by reviewing critically an asserted derivation of the Konishi anomalous dimension in the setup of pure spinor string theory. Next, we constrain ourselves to bosonic AdS_5 × S^5 String in static gauge, where we construct a so-called single-mode string solution, a generalization of the pulsating string allowing for unconstrained zero-modes. This solution shows classical integrability and invariance under the isometries SO(2,4) × SO(6) at the quantum level. Arguing heuristically about the effects of supersymmetry, we indeed recover the first non-trivial quantum correction to the Konishi anomalous dimension. We continue by implementing static gauge for the full AdS_5 × S^5 superstring and find elegant expressions for the Lagrangian density and the supercharges. We then constrain our interest to the superparticle and, using two different methods, find canonical coordinates at quadratic order in fermions. We conclude by exploring another quantization scheme: As the single-mode string is nothing but the SO(2,4) × SO(6) orbit of the pulsating string, we apply orbit method quantization to the particle and spinning string solutions in bosonic AdS_3 × S^3 yielding consistent results for the spectra.

Huenges, Bert. Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophische Fakultät I, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/14972.

Full text
Abstract:
To develop a tool for process evaluation in Problem-based learning (PBL) a content analysis of student generated learning issues in PBL (PBLI), faculty objectives (Objectives) and Papercases (Cases) is performed in a reformed curriculum at the Charité Berlin. Therefore, Information from Cases, objectives and PBLI derived from three thematic blocks are condensed into keywords and clustered into "basic sciences", "psychosocial" and "clinical issues". The topics of PBLI are characterised as identical , associated and not matching to corresponding Cases and Objectives. The differences between blocks, amount and content of Objectives, length, complexity and content of Cases as well as the overlap between different small groups and position in the block are analysed. Results indicate a high general overlap of mainly psychosocial and clinical PBLI with Cases and a high general overlap of mainly basic science topics with Objectives. The content of PBLI and their relevance for the achievement of faculty objectives (Type B match) seems to be dependent from the Cases as well as the PBL groups, whereas the coverage of learning issues by PBLI (Type A Match) correlates with the amount of faculty objectives. High differences between different small groups are indicators for a non-directive, student centred learning process. In conclusion apart from the relevance of student-generated learning issues for faculty objectives and the overlap of learning between groups, which have been discussed in literature before, other quality parameters for PBL as the relevance of students learning for the respective Papercase and the coverage of contents of the core curriculum seem to play an important role for the quality of a reformed medical curriculum. Content analysis could deal as one method for quality control of the learning process in PBL, but different methodological pitfalls are to be faced.

Baillot, Anne. Paris 8, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002PA082178.

Abstract:
Our work, based on K. W. F. Solger's (1780-1819) manuscripts and posthumous editions, will enlighten the genesis and reception of his aesthetics between 1800 and 1830. After presenting his printed as well as his unprinted texts, we will describe how these are connected to one another and which concepts they let prevail. His intellectual biography will then be drawn from a historical enquiry stressing out his role in the University of Berlin between 1811 and 1819. A comparison between the different types of texts available today will finally point out the literary stakes of a work that has been left unfinished by its author and has been widely revised by its posthumous editors. This research has been mainly based on Solger's correspondence and aims at pointing out his relationships to his contemporaries in the Romantic and Idealistic Berlin

Abstract:
Over the last couple decades, the engineering world has seen a steady increase in collaboration and knowledge sharing through predominantly web-based means. Facilitated by a growing number of tools that allow for data and knowledge to be easily transferred, the technological landscape that organizations operate in is completely different than even a couple years ago. Specifically for engineering design, mainstream tools such as email, forums and wikis have been researched in both a professional sense as well as in design education. The following paper looks to build off these studies by identifying and studying the wide range of tools that engineering students utilize on their own accord to collaborate and progress towards finishing a design project. Specifically, mechanical and industrial engineering students enrolled in introductory design courses at Oregon State University and Humboldt State University were observed, interviewed and surveyed regarding these topics. The following will outline the findings from this study, with hopes that this work can help others in the design education field better understand and make better use of the tools that students prefer to use. Also, as the next generation of engineers moves onto professional careers, the ability of engineering firms to understand how the younger generation collaborates and communicates will be important in shaping how engineering firms efficiently utilize new web-based tools in engineering design.

Abstract:
Необходимо от «идеалистических» форм противодействия социально-экономическому тренду перейти к борьбе за «нормализованные» трудовые отношения. the article shows that the development of commodity relations in education has negative consequences, which some people are trying to reduce by resorting to the ideas of the «German model» of University. It is necessary to move from the «idealistic» forms of counteracting the socio-economic trend to the struggle for «normalized» labor relations.
