As a response to the question posed in the title, this article presents a critical assessment of how the works of the nationalist–ideological philosophers can be seen as evidence against David Hume’s and Immanuel Kant’s ideas of race. Hume and Kant have certain ideas about race; if these ideas are true, then there is—and indeed, can be—no African philosophy. But there is African philosophy—that of nationalist–ideological philosophy; therefore, Hume’s and Kant’s ideas about race are incorrect.

My aim in this thesis is to demonstrate that common interpretations of Kant’s theory of respect do not account for the motivation a subject feels to follow the moral law. A large number of interpreters focus on Kant’s early ethical works—such as the Grounding and the Critique of Practical Reason—to justify how the moral law alone motivates a subject to act rightly. Abstract This chapter discusses accounts of hope found in the works of important Enlightenment thinkers: René Descartes, Thomas Hobbes, Baruch de Spinoza, David Hume, and Immanuel Kant. The paper’s guiding questions are: Where are discussions of hope located within these thinkers’ works? Do the authors provide an account of what hope is? Do they ascribe a certain function to hope? Most authors of the Enlightenment, with the exception of Kant, write about hope in the context of a general account of the passions. Their characterization of hope closely resembles the “standard definition” of hope in contemporary debates. According to this definition, hope consists of a desire and a belief in the possibility, but not the certainty, of the desired outcome. It turns out, however, that Descartes, Hobbes, and Hume advocate a stronger evidential condition for hope than is common today: According to their view, we do not hope for what we take to be merely possible, no matter how unlikely it is; we hope for what we take to be more likely. Kant’s account differs from the other ones in important respects: He does not treat hope as an affect and he does not require a probability estimate, but grounds hope in faith.

According to the views expressed in this paper, influences unrelated to the conclusions of Immanuel Kant and G. E. Moore respecting what they saw as the appropriate foundation for moral systems seems to have been at work in the reactions of both to the earlier criticisms of David Hume. Building on a "recent meeting" with Hume in a pub on Princes Street in Edinburgh, I develop the suggestion that both Kant and Moore were loyal to traditional notions of an intuited, non-prudential basis for ethical injunctions. Kant, by his insistence that any morality linked only to hypothetical imperatives cannot be truly "moral," and Moore by his refusal to see the emptiness of his posited "good as simply good" which he felt must be kept free of any corrupting reference to real-world prudential constituents, thus support the foundation of ethical systems in an inner, unanalyzable moral impulse. And they do so in obedience to commitments that antedate their moral philosophies. I also claim that Hume has been misunderstood in that he did not mean to oppose the naturalistic grounding of moral systems in his famous statement disjoining is-statements from ought-statements; what he really intended was to point out the illogic of moralists who improperly pretend to derive categorical or intuited moral imperatives from real-world is-statements while denying any prudentiality or a posteriority to the transaction. Because both maintain that this simple inner moral impulse must be independent of prudential considerations in making moral decisions and judgments, Kant and Moore oppose naturalistic ethical systems which, like J.S. Mill's, suggest that this-worldly welfare and happiness are in large part coexistent with the true meaning of morality. Their position, therefore, places both of these proponents of intuitionist metaethics at odds with the principle of political social democrats that a respectable moral system must place worldly satisfactions and happiness above obedience to any putative "higher" moral law and its intuited imperatives.

This chapter examines the viability of thinking about the state, and political theory more generally, from David Hume and Adam Smith's perspective. It argues that there is something paradoxical in the claim that Hume and Smith offer theories of the state without sovereignty. It also discusses two examples of how we can use Hume and Smith's reconfguration for understanding the state: the first deals with the place of democracy in modern politics; the second relates to how we may come to conceive of the normative purposes and possibilities that the modern state encompasses. Furthermore, the chapter analyzes the claim that the modern state is an outgrowth of commercial sociability, and that its chief function, and ultimate source of legitimacy, is the promotion of utility whilst securing the allegiance of subjects through opinion. Finally, it compares Immanuel Kant and Smith's views on the judgment of rulers with regard to political reform.

This chapter examines how G.W.F. Hegel combats both a utilitarian and a strictly Kantian account of the connections between work, ownership, and citizenship, with the ultimate aim of showing how various tensions that commonly beset theories of property bedevil his own account. Hegel certainly saw the importance of the distinction between owning one's job and having security of tenure during good behavior. Indeed, he argued that the transition from medieval to modern constitutional arrangements necessarily brought with it a transition from private ownership of public positions to crown appointment on the basis of qualifications and performance. The chapter first provides an overview of the intellectual context of Hegel's exposition, with emphasis on themes associated with John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Immanuel Kant, and David Hume. It then considers Hegel's views on topics such as agriculture, civil society, family, and freedom.

Chapter 2 shows that to understand Kant’s reference to “the objection of David Hume which first, many years ago, interrupted my dogmatic slumber” we must read it against the background of his earlier references to Hume’s “question” and to Hume’s “attack” on metaphysics. It breaks down Hume’s “attack” on metaphysics into three steps: a demonstration that rules out the possibility of knowing causal connection through pure concepts, and thus of knowing the principle of sufficient reason; a conclusion that the concept of cause is a bastard of the imagination; and a conclusion that there is no metaphysics. It argues that Kant’s source for this account is the Enquiry, not the Treatise, and points to the sections of the Enquiry that correspond to each step.

It argues that Kant sees Hume’s attack on metaphysics as a contribution to Enlightenment. Kant praises Hume by opposing his critics, like Beattie, whose invocation of common sense against Hume Kant associates with the Inquisition’s enforcement of orthodoxy via “chisel and hammer.” We must read Kant’s defense of Hume, the Preface argues, against the background of the scandal produced by Hume’s Dialogues. Kant’s evocation of Horace links the Preface with Kant’s “What Is Enlightenment?” and its motto sapere aude.
