Abstract:
The theory of excitation transfer has been used to explain why residual stimulation from a program can heighten response to commercials aired within the program. This research examines the reverse phenomenon with commercial humor levels affecting the program. Higher humor levels in otherwise identical commercials were shown to enhance viewer enjoyment of humorous television programs in a 2 × 2 × 2 experimental design. Programs were rated on a composite measure labeled “program entertainment value.”

Layering this with gender performative theory, the study also investigated how different male and female characters used ridicule and were subject to it themselves. After examining ridicule in T

Jack Benny drew from a successful vaudeville career to adapt his humor to radio form in 1932. Realizing the pressures of creating new program material on a weekly basis, he hires Harry Conn. Benny and Conn develop continuing, quirky characters and “comedy situations” in imaginative spaces away from the microphone, that create a new kind of American humor. Sponsored first by Canada Dry Ginger Ale, Benny and Conn develop their program through experimentation, addition of new character Mary, and turn Jack into the “Fall Guy” who was butt of his cast members’ jokes. Friction with Harry Conn nearly derails the program, but Benny finds new writers and the program hits top radio popularity ratings by mid-decade.

This chapter discusses how humor is generated in Oga at the Top series (OATT), a puppet political satire program featuring prominent actors on the Nigerian political scene. The question of how multimodal phenomena in humor bearing texts combine to create a humorous political commentary has not been addressed within the Nigerian context. This chapter therefore explores how different semiotic resources are combined to create humor in OATT. From the 25 videos selected from Season One, the humor creation mechanisms in OATT were found to include caricature of national leaders, re-interpretation of contemporary happenings, musical parody, script opposition in conversation, inter-texuality and physical violence. Though the stated function of the series was to exploit the Nigerian political climate for humor, the analysis shows that the audience has appropriated the videos for their own ends based on the functions they felt they could serve. The chapter concludes with the significance of the online distribution of the videos.

This chapter focuses on the experiences of participants in an intergenerational art program for LGBTQIA+ audiences, which takes place at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tucson (MOCA). In this chapter, the authors outline the impetus and purpose of this program. They consider the impact that it has had on LGBTQIA+ individuals and the formation of an intergenerational community. From combating loneliness to creating connections across generations, this program invites individuals into the museum space who identify as LBTQIA+ but rarely have the opportunity to connect with one another. Facilitators and participants design projects and gallery activities that promote engagement through dialogue and art-making. As such, art provides connections that give participants opportunities to share and learn from one another. Contemporary art and the museum become sites for engagement. Gallery activities and art-making allow participants to experiment with a range of materials and learn new skills through humor, play, creative inquiry, and collaboration.

Turning to one final entertainment genre, Chapter Three studies the rise in popularity of parodic infotainment news shows following the September 11th attacks. Drawing upon humor relief theory, as well as theories concerning affect mimicry and imagined communities, this essay argues that news parodies, such as Comedy Central's The Daily Show, satisfied various emotional needs for viewers during this traumatic time period. While critics often worry that therapeutic laughter diffuses fear and anger and quells rebellious impulses, this essay argues that the humor provided by these programs have the potential to help viewers transform their negative emotions into action.

Abstract:
The alliteration is appealing, and so are the images. What would happen if we took gumption, grit, and gaiety to school with us each day? Gumption is courage to act using common sense. We have a get- up- and- go attitude. We display a spirited initiative to get things done. We have drive and heart. • We may speak up calmly to disagree with a co- worker. • We may let a custodian know that we need a change in our room setup and cleaning schedule. • We may ask the principal to explain a statement made in our annual evaluation. Grit is tenacity that borders on stubbornness. We see a challenge, we take it on, and we endure. With our firmness of character, challenging situations fuel us. We are persistent. • We are determined help a student achieve a challenge that baffles him. • We persevere past our threshold of fatigue and a myriad of obstacles to manage and polish the annual program for parents. • We know our weaknesses, and we are willing to do what is necessary to develop and improve. Gaiety is joyfulness, lightheartedness, and the jollification of life’s moments. We find opportunities to be joyful, and liberate ourselves to feel and show our delight. • Instead of scolding a student for an outburst, we may offer a good- natured quip instead. • We may help a colleague see the humor in an event that she found disturbing. • As we walk in the door of our school, we treat those hallowed halls as possibilities for experiencing joy and delight. These three G’s brace us for what needs to be done, drive us to complete our task, and spur us to be exultant about achievements large and small. They bolster us to teach with vitality!
