Generally speaking, it can be stated that a new genre appeared in the past few years – the memes, which are a combination of pictorial and textual elements, created and shared online. Richard Dawkins and Susan Blackmore, who provided the traditional meme definition, argue that a meme is what travels from brain to brain. Digital meme has a narrower interpretation, since it focuses on the textual-pictorial elements. Ac

Stay at home orders and social distancing measures instituted to decrease the spread of COVID-19 made it difficult to conduct an in-person stroke support group. However, social isolation related to home quarantine would exacerbate the emotional toll associated with stroke. Therefore, we decided to proceed with a virtual stroke s

It will be possible to send anywhere or to re-create anywhere a system of sensations, or more precisely a system of stimuli, provoked by some object or event in any given place. Works of art will acquire a kind of ubiquity. We shall only have to summon them and there they will be…They will not merely exist in themselves but will exist wherever someone with a certain apparatus happens to be. Over the past century, many books for general readers have styled sharks as “monsters of the deep” (Steele). In recent decades, however, at least some writers have also turned to representing how sharks are seriously threatened by human activities. At a time when media coverage of shark sightings seems ever increasing in Australia, scholarship has begun to consider people’s attitudes to sharks and how these are formed, investigating the representation of sharks (Peschak; Ostrovski et al.) in films (Le Busque and Litchfield; Neff; Schwanebeck), newspaper reports (Muter et al.), and social media

The article deals with online interactional humour in user comments on YouTube. Drawing on an extensive dataset of verbal reactions to a video discussing the (in)appropriateness of joking about the 2019 burning of the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, the analysis traces how online commenters recontextualise the disaster and how they jointly produce humorous interaction on a sensitive topic. The analysis focuses on the emergence of joking threads, which consist of jokes shared by the commenters and additional (non-)humorous metapragmatic comments that develop the interaction in various directions

Humour and comedy are emergent topics for academic researchers whose work is illuminating our understanding of the power and purpose of humour and comedy for people and society (Lockyer and Pickering, 2005; Jeffries, 2014). However, much of this output discusses the impact of humour and comedy itself and little has been written about it in the context of a festival. This chapter takes as its focus two established and successful festivals: the International Festival of Comics (FIBD) in Angoulême, France; and Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival (DLCF) in England. 2 This choice reflects several fact
