Abstract:
Nowadays we can witness a tendency where the visual replaces the verbal. Humour experiences the same: its visual expression – caricature – is a visual metaphor that already has taken its remarkable place in the field of humour. Caricatures have become a distorting mirror that show deformed but still fairly presented reality. Humour is important part of our everyday life's communication and it covers many spheres of people's life, even including marketing, politics, work relationships, etc. That is why caricatures became a remarkable tool, for example, in political contentions. This article will show what it takes to create this distorting mirror from one side and to see a reflection in it and accept it from the other side.

Abstract:
The current paper presents an analysis of the concept of advertising and its functions in the present-day world. Three prime advertising functions have been singled out: the informative or communicative, economic and social. In addition, the impact of advertising on the consumer is discussed based on seven main appeals (fear, humour, sex, music, rationality, emotions, scarcity) used by advertisers when targeting feelings and emotions of an audience. Moreover, the paper presents and defines the concept of shocking advertising as well as analyses the aims of its use. One of the main purposes of shocking advertising is to draw the attention of the target audience to the advertising message. It is rather frequent that shocking content – disgusting images, sexual reference, profanity/ obscenity, vulgarity, impropriety, moral offensiveness and religious taboos – is presented and described. Be to, šiame darbe didelis dėmesys skiriamas šokiruojančiai reklamai ir jos sąvokos apibrėžimui, analizuojamos šokiruojančios reklamos naudojimo priežastys, kurių viena pagrindinių yra tikslinės auditorijos dėmesio patraukimas į reklaminį pranešimą. Nagrinėjami ir aprašomi dažniausiai komercinėje ir socialinėje reklamoje naudojami šoką sukeliantys turiniai, tokie kaip bjaurūs vaizdai, seksualinės užuominos, nešvankybės, cinizmas, vulgarumas, nepadorumas, moralinių normų pažeidimai ir religiniai tabu.

Full text
Abstract:
Atliekant analizę remiamasi A. Lehrer, S. T. Gries, M. Kelly, E. Bakaradze moksliniais tyrimais, tačiau pastebima, jog humoristinis Lietuvos diskursas morfologiniame lygmenyje vadovaujasi ir tokiomis konceptualiojo blendingo struktūromis, kurios nėra aptariamos minėtųjų mokslininkų darbuose.

This study aims to determine the pragmatic strategy in the creation of humor that aired on some Indonesian television. The research domain uses the assessment of the humorous theory of Asa Berger. The unit of analysis of this research are words, phrases, and sentences as verbal markers of speech humor. The results of research include misunderstanding techniques with idiom meaning of a word that raises a different meaning; The technique of deceiving by asking a question and a sentence indirectly outwits the other person, so the humorist looks smarter than his opponent; Mocking technique by directly criticizing the speaker because his speech sounds weird; And sound-playing techniques by replacing a phoneme in a word which then creates a different meaning.

Abstract:
Increasing people’s willingness to donate organs after their death requires effective communication strategies. In two preregistered studies, we assessed whether humorous entertainment education formats on organ donation elicit positive effects on knowledge, fears, attitudes, and behavioral intentions–both immediately after the treatment and four weeks later. We test whether perceived funniness mediates expected effects on attitudes and intentions. Study 1 is a quasi-experiment which uses a live medical comedy show (N = 3,964) as an entertainment education format, which either contained or did not contain information about organ donation. Study 2, a lab experiment, tests humor’s causal effect in a pre-post design with a control group (N = 144) in which the same content was provided in either a humorous or non-humorous way in an audio podcast. Results showed that humorous interventions per se were not more effective than neutral information, but that informing people about organ donation in general increased donation intentions, attitudes, and knowledge. However, humorous interventions were especially effective in reducing fears related to organ donation. The findings are discussed regarding the opportunities for sensitive health communication through entertainment education formats, psychological processes that humor triggers, and humor’s role in health communication formats.

Abstract:
The theory of humors, which was the prevalent theory of affect in Shakespeare's day, was used to explain both states (moods, emotions) and traits (personalities). This article reports humoral scores appropriate to the major characters of Shakespeare's comedies. The Dictionary of Affect in Language was used to score all words ( N = 180,243) spoken by 105 major characters in 13 comedies in terms of their emotional undertones. These were translated into humoral scores. Translation was possible because emotional undertones, humor, and personality (e.g., Eysenck's model) are defined by various axes in the same two-dimensional space. Humoral scores differed for different types of characters, e.g., Shakespeare's lovers used more Sanguine language and his clowns more Melancholy language than other characters. A study of Kate and Petruchio from The Taming of the Shrew demonstrated state-like changes in humor for characters as the play unfolded.

Abstract:
A nyelvi példákat többféle műfajból, illetőleg szövegtípusból merítem.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract While the appeal of humor lies, typically, in its very spontaneity and original contextual incongruity, there is also the chance of an ‘afterlife’ for the humorous text. In most cases, the humorist seeks an immediate response for what is an ephemeral, fleeting, linguistic transaction. A permanent place in humor culture is probably the least of the humorist’s goals- after all, the immediate, positive response is prioritized as an evidence of skill. Thus, most humor studies focus on the first instantiation of humor, as being generative of the act of humor. This prioritization of the immediate surprise, over the ‘echoes’ of an instance of humor, does not address the fact that many people enjoy revisiting a familiar joke, or comic film, or an entire TV comedy series, and that these revisited texts become incorporated into group and cultural artefacts. These recontextualizations in themselves are potentially funny, but they are also important in sustaining the original instance of humor as a type of ongoing conversation: a very distinctive feature of humor’s social importance. This paper will present a theorization of an interdependency between author, text, and interlocutors for the ‘afterlife’ of texts, and will furnish high-profile examples to support this concept.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze the construction of women in Indonesia humors that appear through the application of whatsapp conversation. This analysis is based on the opinion of Crawford (2003) and Sen (2012) about gender relations, linguistics, and humors. The focus of the study is the use of indeksial meaning and polysemy in constructing a humorous story in women. After the analysis, it was found that humors developing in the application media of whatsapp conversation tended to perpetuate sexist patriarchal values such as portraying women as a highly compliant and passive. In terms of the structure, most of the humors used several techniques of misalignment to cause the value of humor in the reader's mind. Most of the female figures appeared to be in the private or domestic space. In addition, the data show that most of the humors used figurative polysemy, especially in describing sexual activities. In this case, the women were always associated with inanimate objects, such as in describing sexual activities or woman genitals. The indeksial meanings of the language used were always based on the paradigm and the interests of men that are in line with patriarchal values. This eventually led to symbolic violence on women. Keywords: humors, polysemy, symbolic violence, women

Abstract:
This article describes the impact of humoral theory and astrology on the description of human body in four types of temperaments (choleric, phlegmatic, sanguine and melancholic) in the Renaissance writings. The most important of them is an antique book entitled Introductiones apotelesmaticae in Chyromantiam, Physiognomiam, Astrologiam Naturalem complexiones hominum naturas planetarum written by Johannes Indagine and printed in 1522. Other books from this period are: Enchiridion Physiognomiae co[m] pe[n]diosu[m]: cu[m] figuris facieru[m] (1532) by Simonenide Louicz, Problemata Aristotelis. Gadki… o składności członk.w człowieczych (1535) by Andrzej Glaber, Phisionomia hinc inde ex illustribus scriptoribus… recollecta (1518) by Johann von Glogau. The article describes the humoral theory of diseses, which roots were created by Hippocrates and Galen, and the doctrine of the four humors dominated Medieval and Renaissance medicine. This theory held that in the body there are four humors or bodily fluids (moists) held the secret to temperaments. These humors were: blood, yellow bile, black bile and phlegm. A proper domination of each fluid was a cause of characteristic patterns of appropriate temperament: melancholic, sanguine, choleric and phlegmatic. The theory of four temperaments was also intrinsically tied to astrology, beginning with a natal birth chart interpretations to the impact of diffrent planets (Zodiac) on the organs in human body. Astrology was also helpful in the interpretation of temperaments (personality types) with their connection to the picture of human face, which was analyzed by the medieval physiognomy and also to physical appearance: shape of the body, colour of the skin, musculature and hair. The article also describes the correlations connecting the theory of four humors with birth (natal) charts and looking which planet has the impact on each temperament and human body, with negative or positive domination of diffrent character qualities. And finally, there is a detailed reconstruction of physiognomic types of human types of four temperaments, based on the book from 1522 Introductiones apotelesmaticae in Chyromantiam, Physiognomiam, Astrologiam Naturalem complexiones hominum naturas planetarum by Indagine. The author discusses a planet’s positions and conjunctions with other planets in horoscope and their impact on temperament, physical posture, character traits, with some medical comments.

Abstract:
Introduction: A quintessential element of Hippocratic medicine is treatment of mental diseases which was based on a detailed examination of the symptoms as well as the study of human physiology and final outcome of the diseases which is based on humoral theory.
Purpose: The aim of the work is to highlight the contribution of Hippocrates to the study of mental illness based on his theory of humors
Methodology: Our study consists of interpretations of the original text of Hippocrates including extensive observations of anatomy and physiology of human body based on humoral theory. Then the information was evaluated on the basis of modern literature in order to establish their validity. A major limitation of the research is the lack of a systemic methodology to screen the Hippocratic corpus for relevant passages which actually requires interdisciplinary research in order to determine which aspects of Hippocratic medicine can be developed.
Results: In Corpus Hippocraticum, it is highlighting that maintaining a relative proportion of humors in human body (apart from maintaining health) regulates the human temperament and its behavioral manifestations. Hippocrates, has included in his work observations not only on human physiology and diseases but also studies the environmental and geographical impact on them, thus setting the stage for holistic approaches
Conclusion: Summarizing, Hippocratic medicine and particularly his observations on mental disorders provides a clear picture of the methodology used by Hippocrates which can be a guide for the adoption of good practices for contemporary scholars and clinicians on their everyday practice

Abstract:
When considering the history of exercise physiology, authors begin with Hippocrates and the “Golden Age” of Greece before mentioning Galen and the contributions from Rome. However, this approach has omitted the information from the ancient civilizations of India which flourished before and during the emergence of Mycenaen cultures. Specifically ignored have been 1) the tridosa doctrine (humoral theory), which as early as 1500 B.C., emphasized that disease occurred because of a displacement of one or more of the three humors, with health being achieved when the humors were in equilibrium and 2) the perspective of Susruta (Sushruta) who was a 600 B.C. physician who included exercise in his prescriptions to prevent and treat diseases. Susruta not only advocated exercise to maintain equilibrium among the humors, notably kapha, he promoted exercise to minimize the consequences of obesity and diabetes. To be effective, exercise had to be daily and moderate in intensity and never excessive or to exceed the half-maximum limit for exhaustion, because disease or even death could ensue. It is concluded that Susruta's concepts pertaining to chronic exercise and to the health benefits of exercise were “remarkably modern” and that future authors on the history of exercise physiology should include contributions from ancient India.

Abstract:
Humour is one of essential aspects to communicate with other people comfortably. Most of verbal humours, especially implicit humours generate because people break Grice’s four conversational maxims. Concerning this phenomenon, this research aims to find out types of non-observance of cooperative principle found in verbal humour, which uttered by the characters in British Situational Comedy Miranda. Qualitative method was adapted to analyze the data, which was conducted through identifying, classifying, interpreting the data. Humorous utterances from nine episodes of Miranda were the primary sources of data. In collecting the data, the researchers observed the whole episodes and the scripts, checked the suitability, took a note, and classified it into tables. The study concludes that there are four types of non-observance of cooperative principle, namely violating, flouting, infringing, and opting out a maxim. The result reveals that there are 80 humorous utterances, which do not obey the maxim. There are 66 utterances (82,5%) of flouting maxim, 10 utterances (12,5%) violation maxim, 3 utterances (3,75%) of infringing maxim, and 1 utterance (1,25%) of opting out maxim which are found in the sitcom.

Abstract:
4. Mįslių kūrimas reikalauja pakankamai sudėtingų ir tobulų žodinės išraiškos formų, kurias vaikai geriau įsisavina, nei kurdami žodinius pasakojimus. 5. Mįslių minimui vaikų darželiuose reikia skirti daugiau laiko. Šiuo metu praktikuojamą daiktų atspėjimą pagal juos charakterizuojančius požymius reikia nors iš dalies pakeisti mįslių minimu. 6. Vaikų darželiuose ir pradinėje mokykloje būtų tikslinga vystyti vaikų mįslių kūrimą net ir neskiriant tam specialaus laiko, tiesiog racionaliau tam panaudojant kitus užsiėmimus.

Abstract:
According to the researchers, the most intriguing and fascinating work at the Corpus Hippocraticum is the treatise De prisca medicina. It consists of 24 parts in which Hippocrates argues that the human organism is a blend of various substances or humors. Having set forth humoral theory, Hippocrates criticizes the hypothesis about the causes of diseases independent of this theory. Hippocrates medicine, due to the way it is practiced, should be treated as τέχνη, and this term can be translated as proficiency, craftsmanship, skills, craft, and art. Medicine should not use hypotheses or generalizations but should be based on experience and research. The doctor was a researcher, but above all a craftsman, accompanied by students and other doctors, with whom he analyzed every case of disease.

Abstract:
Humoral theory, also known as theory of akhlat is a key concept in Unani System of Medicine. It was originated in Ancient Greece and later developed by Galen and Arabic Physicians. The theory was central to the teachings of Greco Arabic medicine and it became the dominant theory in Europe for many centuries. It remained a major influence on medical practice and teaching until eighteenth century. The theory was first postulated by Hippocrates in his treatise On the Nature of Man. The method of approach of these early thinkers was to look for natural explanations for human physiology and disease causation with the help of logical reasoning and observation. In this theory, humors existed as liquids within the body which are known as blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile. The humoral theory evolved over millennia and finally became the dominant explanation of human physiology. This was in contrast to the supernatural theories for disease causation and also attempt to explain that disease instead is a naturalistic event and it can be understood by natural causes. This short review will mainly focus on the understanding and historical background of the theory of akhlat.International Journal of Human and Health Sciences Vol. 02 No. 04 October’18. Page : 189-192

The effects of humor on increasing discomfort thresholds were tested with Transcutaneous End Nerve Stimulation (TENS). Undergraduate students ( n = 31) with high or low scores on Martin and Lefcourt's Situational Humor Questionnaire were randomly assigned to a humor or nonhumor condition. Discomfort thresholds for TENS were assessed before and during treatment. There was a significant increase in discomfort thresholds in the humorous treatment compared to the nonhumorous condition. Evidence was found for subjects to smile “wryly” (an increase in zygomatic and corrugator tensions) more during humorous stimuli than nonhumorous stimuli when they were waiting to be stimulated with the TENS.

Abstract The article is dedicated to the role of weather in Shakespeare’s tragedies. It traces a dense network of instances of weather – stage weather, narrated weather events, weather imagery – throughout his plays, and attempts to reconstruct the weather’s structural implications for the genre of tragedy. The way early modern humoral pathology understood the weather’s influence on the humours of the human body – for which Shakespeare’s plays themselves give evidence – provides the background for reconstructing the function of the weather as a source of tragic force. Its turbulence not only infects the characters in the play and thereby drives the plot, but also transgresses the boundaries of the fictional world and affects spectators in the auditorium.

Abstract:
Humour is a prevalent feature in any form of human interaction, regardless of language modality. This article explores in detail how humour is negotiated in conversations among deafblind Australians who are fluent users of tactile Australian Sign Language (Auslan). Without access to the visual or auditory cues that are normally associated with humour (e.g. smiles, laughter, eye crinkles and ‘smile voice’), there is a risk that deafblind interactants will misconstrue humorous utterances as serious, or be unsure whether their conversation partner has got the joke. In this article, we explore how humorous utterances unfold in tactile signed interactions. Drawing on Conversation Analytic principles, we outline the ad hoc and more conventionalised signals deafblind signers use to signal amusement. Looking at humour in these conversations contributes to a greater understanding of how humour is conveyed across language modalities and further support for humour’s centrality to interactional solidarity.

Abstract:
Starting from the rare and not very pleasant experience of having his translation of a short-story by the American humorist James Thurber (1894-1961) bought by a publisher and later discovering that another translation was published by the same firm, the author of this article proposes to examine these translations and to see whether there is any reason for opposing commercial translation to academic translation. Though there should be none, this case shows that publishers of texts aimed at young readers do not pay enough attention to the translations they publish and, where humour is concerned, that the commercial translator too often neuters or kills what makes the original text subtly humorous. Though the study of the published translation is voluntarily polemical (it is however abundantly illustrated with examples from the texts, closely analysed and discussed), it is only pleading for more respect for the text one pays homage to by translating it and also for the readers of the translation, who should be offered as humorous and subtle a text as the original.

Abstract:
In connection with the prevailing trends of anthropocentrism in modern science, the importance of the problem of idiostyle increases in focusing on increasingly complex phenomena in human psychology and its aesthetic and philosophical cognition. Irony is one of the most important stylistic components that emphasize the individuality of the artist. One of the most effectively used critical and evaluative artistic means in the satirical and humorous stories of the outstanding Kazakh humorist Ospankhan Aubakirov is irony. The article deals with the implementation of irony in the works of the writer as an important tool in the aesthetic and artistic system of satirical works. Types of author's irony and irony from the character in humorous stories of the writer are proved by concrete examples. The author analyzes the nature and features of ironic statements conveyed by the author and characters in works of art. The author also examines the manifestations of irony at the plot level in some of the author's stories, as well as the peculiarities of linguistic and textual types of ironic meaning.

Abstract The aim of the present study is to explore higher-order dimensions of humorous conduct derived from 100 non-redundant and comprehensive statements. These dimensions are validated in self- and other-reports and their criterion validity is assessed by relating them to other humor concepts (temperamental basis of the sense of humor, attitudes towards laughter and being laughed at, humor appreciation and creation). Four broad dimensions (mean-spirited/earthy, entertaining, inept, and reflective/benign) were supported in self- and other-reports, and two narrower dimensions (laughter and canned) were found in self-reports. These dimensions covered affective, cognitive, and dysfunctional aspects of humorous conduct and spanned across humorous temperament, attitudes towards laughter and being laughed at as well as humor appreciation and creation. These six dimensions can serve as a reference framework and higher-order categories to which humor scales could be assigned. Future studies need to test the comprehensiveness of these dimensions and conduct further validation studies.

AbstractThe present study investigates the relationships of eight comic styles (fun, benevolent humor, nonsense, wit, irony, satire, sarcasm, and cynicism) with acceptability of prejudice (laughing at different groups and topics), humorous self-image (funniness and frequency of laughter), humor appreciation (funniness and aversiveness of cartoons with different structures and contents), and happiness. A representative Chilean adult sample (N=857, 60.8% women; age M=40.50, SD=17.28) was recruited in face-to-face interviews and online surveys. They completed self-reports of all variables as well as a humor appreciation test. Most of the comic styles related to finding the cartoons funnier. Furthermore, the darker styles were more strongly related to laughing at a variety of topics and groups. Also, happiness was positively related to fun and benevolent humor and negatively to cynicism. This study provides evidence of the criterion validity of the Comic Style Markers in Latin-American cultures and highlights differences between lighter and darker styles.
