Abstract:
SummaryJohn Peters Humphrey is best known for drafting the United NationsUniversal Declaration of Human Rights, a role that, while significant, comprised only a brief period in Humphrey’s life. Prior to his time at the UN, Humphrey was an adamant Canadian nationalist who argued for a strong, united Canada. At the same time, he was highly critical of international organization and argued for a federal, world government. This apparent contrariness was also seen in his choice of employment. Supportive of world government, Humphrey viewed the UN as little more than a “defensive alliance.” Humphrey’s paradoxical views and actions are far more coherent than they first appear. It is possible to see in them a single, unifying trend: federalism. Federalism’s layered government structure has the ability to preserve regional differences and also to connect the individual to each layer of law. At the UN, Humphrey was able to make great strides in this direction, and today several international bodies receive complaints directly from individual complainants. In this way, Humphrey helped connect the individual with international law.

Abstract:
The Royal Army Medical Corps made a significant contribution to victory in the Great War. Humphrey Humphreys' letters provide a rare account of life in one of its most effective units, a field ambulance. He served throughout the war and was in the Middle East from April 1915 until March 1919. During this time he served in 2nd South Midland Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance and its successors, rising to command the unit during the advance on Damascus. He also served as Deputy Assistant Director of Medical Services with 53rd Division and the Yeomanry Mounted Division during the 3rd Battle of Gaza and the Jerusalem campaign. The letters are annotated and provided with a commentary. This gives Humphreys' background prior to joining the army and an account of his post war activities. It sets out the military and medical contexts of his service, and the principal military operations in which he took part. Contributions made to the war effort by Birmingham's upper middle class, by students and past students of Birmingham University and by old boys of Bromsgrove School are assessed: Humphreys was a member of each of these three sets. Comparisons are made with other universities and schools.

Coombs, Neil. "The communicating village : Humphrey Jennings and surrealism." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2014. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/4326/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the films of Humphrey Jennings, exploring his work in relation to surrealism. This examination provides an overview of how surrealism’s set of ideas is manifest in Jennings’s documentary film work. The thesis does not assert that his films are surrealist texts or that there is such a thing as a surrealist film; rather it explores how his films, produced in Britain in the period from 1936 to 1950, have a dialectical relationship with surrealism. The thesis first considers Jennings’s work in relation to documentary theory, outlining how and why he is considered a significant filmmaker in the documentary field. It then goes on to consider Jennings’s engagement with surrealism in Britain in the years prior to World War Two. The thesis identifies three paradoxes relating to surrealism in Britain, using these to explore surrealism as an aura that can be read in the films of Jennings. The thesis explores three active phases of Jennings’s film work, each phase culminating in a key film. It acknowledges that Spare Time (1939) and Listen to Britain (1942) are key films in Jennings’s oeuvre, examining these two films and then emphasising the importance of a third, previously generally overlooked, film, The Silent Village (1943). These explorations allow an examination of the way that Jennings’s films articulate the relationship between surrealism and the everyday, the sublime and the uncanny. The thesis asserts that there is a specifically British form of surrealism that has developed from the historical situation of Britain in the period from 1936 to 1946, one that draws from the national identity of Britain. The symbolic domain of British surrealism and its praxis can read in the films of Jennings and the auratic traces of Jennings’s films thread through the work of subsequent filmmakers. This thesis describes these traces as the communicating village. The thesis’s consideration of Jennings’s films in relation to surrealism offers a means by which to examine the work of subsequent filmmakers and to assess the importance of surrealism to British cinema.

DuBay, Susan Adams. "John Humphrey Noyes, 1811-1840 : a social biography." PDXScholar, 1989. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/3568.

Full text
Abstract:
John Humphrey Noyes was the founder of the Oneida Community, one of the most successful utopian ventures in nineteenth-century America. Early in his life, Noyes was a deep religious thinker, but he founded Oneida as an ideal society based on extending the family unit, and not as a church. Noyes's social theories eventually overwhelmed his former religious concentration. The purpose of this thesis is to locate in Noyes's religiously-oriented youth the sources of his social interests. Few scholars have studied in depth the childhood and young manhood of John Humphrey Noyes, but that is where the roots of his social theories are to be found. Noyes did write his religious autobiography, but completely passed over his formative years. Further, he never wrote the analysis of his social ideas and experiences that he had once promised. However, many of his early letters and journals have been compiled and edited by his relatives; and his immediate family left reminiscences of his youth. These works provide most of the available information on the childhood of Noyes. Large gaps in his history do exist, however. Therefore, the modern psychological theories of Erik Erikson are used to illuminate the otherwise shadowy areas of Noyes's early life.

Abstract:
The principal argument of this thesis is that royalist literary publishing in the civil wars and Interregnum was a more coherent and wider movement than has been recognised. It asserts the importance of print culture to royalists, both as a vehicle for personal responses to political circumstances, and as a means to criticize and undermine the opposition. The thesis uses the publisher Humphrey Moseley as a lens through which to examine the publisher's role in the dissemination of a wide range of royalist texts. It demonstrates that publishers, as well as authors, were driven by their political and ideological opinions. The thesis begins by establishing that the royalist and Anglican convictions expressed within the texts published by Moseley corresponded with his own. This opening chapter also demonstrates the editorial control that he exerted when publishing a book. Next follow five case studies. In the second chapter I examine writings of Moseley's most prolific author, James Howell. I show that until the censorship legislation of September 1649, Howell published royalist polemical pamphlets. I argue that in response to the censorship act Howell shifted to a more subtle method of polemical writing, most notably when he embedded extracts from his polemical pamphlets in his historical allegory Dodona's Grove which Moseley published in 1650. Chapters Three to Six are genre-based case studies. These chapters analyse the ways that a variety of genres were used by royalists in support of the Stuart cause and the Anglican Church. In the final chapter I set Moseley within the context of royalist publishing more widely. I review the careers of Henry Seile and Richard Royston to demonstrate that Moseley was not the only publisher committed to the royalist cause and that his productions belonged to a broad spectrum of royalist publishing.

McNutt, Dylan. "The Life and Political Career of Hubert Horatio Humphrey." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2019. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/3610.

Full text
Abstract:
Hubert Horatio Humphrey never reached the Oval Office, but his accomplishments during his tenure as mayor, senator, and Vice President are just as noteworthy. During Humphrey’s political career he played a pivotal role in the most influential period of liberal American politics. During his youth and college years Humphrey became learned how to remain loyal to the people around him, and about the racial divisions of the South. Most research on Vice President Humphrey analyzes his time as a Senator, Vice President, and the 1968 Presidential election. The Life and Political Career of Hubert Humphrey, examines Humphrey’s life in its entirety through themes and life lessons as he became the conscience of the nation. Furthermore, The Life and Political Career of Hubert Humphrey, examines the relationship between President Lyndon B. Johnson and Vice President Humphrey and how Humphrey’s loyalty caused with the nation’s conscience to fall short of his lifelong goal.

Abstract:
The introduction of automated perimeters has enabled quantitative and standardized testing of the visual fields of patients. But the static perimetry employed in these instruments is too lengthy for young children. Kinetic perimetry is more successful: kinetic fields have been reported in children as young as 2 1/2 years using the Goldmann perimeter (1) and in infants using other kinetic methods (eg 2, 3). Recently, a modification became available for the Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer (Allergan-Humphrey) that enables kinetic perimetry. Potential advantages of the Humphrey kinetic program for pediatric populations are similar to those for adult patients, including minimal examiner skills, standardized kinetic scan parameters, and the possibility of combining kinetic and static testing.

Abstract:
Objective tests of visual function are reliable indicators of disease and are not influenced by a patient's fears and biases. Unfortunately, there are few such tests available. We were interested in testing the feasibility of using automated pupil perimetry as an objective means of assessing the visual field. Although previous attempts at pupil perimetry did suggest it could be used to assess afferent visual function, the lack of a sensitive means to quantitate the pupil response, automatically analyze it, and produce a reproducible, automated, stimulus source has kept it from becoming a useful clinical and research tool. In order to overcome these problems we developed 1) the instrumentation to accurately quantitate changes in pupil area, 2) a software program to collect the data and analyze it with respect to various response parameters (ie change in pupil area and latency time), and 3) a link between an automated perimeter (the Humphrey Field Analyzer) and a computer-based pupillometer. By using the Humphrey Field Analyzer, we were able to compare focal pupil responses to static visual threshold testing in the same subject.

Abstract:
Abstract A three-stream combined Joule-Humphrey cycle that employs a heat recovery stream to function as a recuperator is presented. Based on an in-house developed thermodynamic performance tool, the operation of a modified dual-shaft turbofan engine is proposed. The engine core is modified by adding an intercooler and a re-heating chamber to approach isothermal compression and expansion processes. A fraction of the primary flow is introduced into a re-heat chamber that uses Rotating Detonation Combustion (RDC) technology. The outflow of the RDC is then merged with the rest of the nucleus current before being discharged to the next turbine stage. The overall system behavior is captured by means of a nonlinear mathematical model featuring eight decision variables, including mass flow rates and compression ratios. A parametric analysis identifies the operational and performance envelope of the proposed engine concept. Ultimately, the model is endowed with an objective function, which includes global efficiency and thrust looking for an operation regime that boosts the thermodynamic performance. A Generalized Reduced Gradient based algorithm is used to solve the nonlinear model, where each iteration solves a linearly constrained subproblem to generate a search direction. The performance and operational envelope presented here could be used as guidance for others considering the implementation of any of the discussed Joule cycle modifications or assessing the cost-effective balance of their use.

Abstract:
The endothelial cell (EC) cytoskeleton mediates several biological functions such as adhesion, migration, phagocytosis, cell division, and mechanosensitivity. These functions are carried out in part through dynamic cytoskeletal polymerization, modulation of crosslinking, and development of tension between intracellular organelles and the extracellular matrix via focal adhesion plaques. One important component of the cytoskeleton is actin which polymerizes into filaments and is thought to be prestressed by virtue of crosslinking proteins such as α-actinin, filamin and myosin II molecular motors. Additionally, actomyosin interaction has been hypothesized to act as a stress dissipation mechanism by virtue of dynamic crossbridging which facilitates actin diffusion through the polymer network of the cytoplasm (Humphrey et al., 2002).

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to formulate a theory for multigenerational interstitial growth of biological tissues whereby each generation has a distinct reference configuration determined at the time of its deposition. In this model, the solid matrix of a growing tissue consists of a multiplicity of intermingled bodies, each of which represents a generation, all of which are constrained to move together in the current configuration. This proposed framework builds on the concept of constrained mixtures of solids originally formulated by Humphrey and Rajagopal (2002). The specific aim is to determine the form of constitutive relations for the solid constituents of a multigenerational tissue, and provide simple illustrations of the theory.

Abstract:
Classical models of emmetropization involve axial length increases accompanied by compensatory, coordinated decreases in crystalline lens power. The underlying mechanisms of this coordination are as yet unclear. We have begun the Orinda Longitudinal Study of Myopia to evaluate the development of the ocular components of refraction in schoolchildren, measuring cycloplegic refraction (Canon R-1 autorefractor), corneal curvature (photokeratoscope), axial dimensions (Humphrey model 820 ultrasound), and crystalline lens curvatures (video-based comparison Ophthalmophakometer). Initial cross sectional results on 240 children, 82 first (mean age 6.6 years), 92 third (8.5 years), and 66 sixth graders (11.6 years) indicate that the crystalline lens thins during development as its curvatures flatten. The mean lens thickness values (±s.d.) for the three groups respectively are: 3.58 ± 0.15 mm, 3.46 ± 0.16 mm, and 3.44 ± 0.13 mm. Adjusted multiple regression y-intercepts for refractive index are 1.417, 1.354, and 1.357 for the three age groups.

Abstract:
A wave-rotor pressure-gain combustor (WRPGC) ideally provides constant-volume combustion and enables a gas turbine engine to operate on the Humphrey-Atkinson cycle. It exploits pressure (both compression and expansion) waves and confined propagating combustion to achieve pressure rise inside the combustor. This study first presents thermodynamic cycle analysis to illustrate the improvements of a gas turbine engine possible with a wave rotor combustor. Thereafter, non-steady reacting simulations are used to examine features and characteristics of a combustor rig that reproduces key features of a WRPGC. In the thermodynamic analysis, performance parameters such as thermal efficiency and specific power are estimated for different operating conditions (compressor pressure ratio and turbine inlet temperature). The performance of the WRPGC is compared with the conventional unrecuperated and recuperated engines that operates on the Brayton cycle. Fuel consumption may be reduced substantially with WRPGC introduction, while concomitantly boosting power. Simulations have been performed of the ignition of propane by a hot gas jet and subsequent turbulent flame propagation and shock-flame interaction.

Guidelines for low energy building design based on the adaptive thermal comfort concept - Technical report: IEA EBC Annex 69: Strategy and Practice of Adaptive Thermal Comfort in Low Energy Buildings. Abstract:
The adaptive thermal comfort concept has been developed over many years and proven in numerous field studies (e.g. Webb 1964, Nicol and Humphreys 1973, Auliciems 1981b, de Dear et al. 1997, McCartney and Nicol 2002, Manu et al. 2016), showing that people are satisfied with a wide range of thermal conditions. Prerequisite is that people are provided with means to make themselves comfortable, that they know which opportunities they have, that it is socially acceptable to use these opportunities and that they are willing to use them (Hellwig, 2015). However, the overall understanding of how to design for such opportunities enabling the occupant to make themselves comfortable in relation to climate and building type, thus how to convert the adaptive thermal comfort concept into building design and concepts for operating buildings, is still limited. There are still common misunderstandings in the interpretation of the adaptive comfort approach among building planners and operators e.g. regarding the amount of control, the seriousness of this topic or the level of information needed by occupants for which reason guidance (e.g. CIBSE 2010, Cook et al. 2020) and knowledge transfer (e.g. Hellwig and Boerstra 2017, 2018) is absolutely essential. Consequently, there is still a gap between scientific research and real-world-application, which this report aims to diminish.
