Abstract:
The Hundred Years War, a series of sporadic campaigns stretching over 116 years, is best organized in eight periods of conflict, four between 1337 and 1396, and four between 1396 and 1457. What ties these campaigns together and distinguishes them from other conflicts between France and England is their focus on the English king's claim to the French crown. The simple part of dealing with them is the descriptive military narration, the complex part is tracing the familial and diplomatic circumstances shaping the alliances and motivations of the participants. If the issue of prisoners of war has given rise to numerous studies in recent years, nevertheless, this topic is far from exhausted. Built on a large corpus of archival sources, this study fuels the debate on ransoms and prisoners with new material. Its originality lies in its broad chronological framework, i.e. the duration of the Hundred Years War, as well as its perspective – that of lower ranking as well as higher-ranking prisoners on both side of the Channel. What does it mean for those men to live in the once coined ‘golden age of private ransoms’? My investigations hinge around three di

Abstract Although bridge construction extends back thousands of years, steel bridge painting is in its infancy. The first iron bridge was built in 1779, and the first steel was used in a bridge in 1828. Coated bridges from the 19th century survive, raising the question, “Can coatings protect steel bridges for the next hundred years?” The author discusses how to achieve 100 years of service life using current materials and offers recommendations for improving steel bridge painting.

Abstract Data generated from the reinspection of some six hundred deaerators are examined. They show that not all vessels that were cracked during the initial inspection were cracked in subsequent inspections. The repair technique influences the propensity for recracking. In addition, it appears that pitting is a more serious problem in reinspection situations than it was during the initial examinations and may well lead to cracking where none existed before. A particularly aggressive form of pitting was identified in a number of units which required extensive, and often difficult, repairs. Th

Currently, there are more than one hundred rubber hoses and approximately 15 kilometers of elastomer-lined pipelines at Syncrude. However, through 10+ years of operation

Individual loci affecting economic traits in dairy cattle (ETL) have been detected via linkage to genetic markers by application of the granddaughter design in the US population and the daughter design in the Israeli population. From these analyses it is not possible to determine allelic frequencies in the population at large, or whether the same alleles are segregating in different families. We proposed to answer this question by application of the "modified granddaughter design", in which granddaughters with a common maternal grandsire are both genotyped and analyzed for the economic traits.
