<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;" lang="EN-US"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">In Asia, there is, in general, a great reverence held for the tiger. The tiger has been imitated and reigns supreme as king of all the beasts throughout Asia. The relationship between man and tiger holds a strange duality in that as much as the tiger is feared for its fierce savagery and destructive power, it is also revered for these very same qualities and for its majestic nature. Therefore, the very symbolic essence of the tiger has permeated all levels of the Asian community and culture; art, mythology, religion, astrology, herbology, and military fighting strategies. The purpose of this article is to show the many rich aspects that the tiger exhibits, and its influence and impact on Asian culture and Chinese martial arts in particular. Martial arts such as Cantonese Hung Gar (Hong Family) and Hasayfu Hung Gar (Hong Family Four Lower Tigers) dedicate a portion of their systems to achieving awesome strength and speed, and to imitating the tiger’s physical prowess. By doing so, they may achieve higher levels of effectiveness within the martial arts.</span></span></span></p>

Abstract:
In 1874 an anonymous author published a partial English language translation and discussion of a now lost Southern Chinese martial arts manual originally titled Tearing Down Techniques of Hero Boxing. This was a critical period in the development of the modern Chinese martial arts. Many of the best known Southern Chinese fighting systems (Hung Gar, Choy Li Fut, Wing Chun, White Crane, etc.) were just starting to assume a recognisable form. Yet it is also a poorly understood era. Just as importantly, it was during the mid- and late nineteenth century that Western soldiers, administrators and adventurers first began to encounter and describe the Chinese martial arts. For better or worse, their records would help shape the perception of China in the popular imagination. This chapter begins by identifying Alfred Lister, a civil servant in Hong Kong, as the previously unknown author of this English language work. It then attempts to reconstruct the structure and contents of the now lost fight book which he encountered. Lastly it investigates the consequences of the misreading of this text.

De Eerste Wereldoorlog beteugelde niet alleen de vrije informatiegaring van de Britse, Nederlandse en Franse pers,maar gaf ook een impuls gaf aan de ontwikkeling van de professionele praktijk van de journalistiek. In het oorlogsgebied en in de buurt van het strijdtoneel raakten de journalisten doordrongen van de verantwoordelijkheid die op hun schouders rustte. Ondanks de ingrijpendemaatregelen van de autoriteiten omhun verslaggeving te beteugelen en te controleren, poogden deze verslaggevers om een betrouwbaar beeld van de oorlogssituatie te schetsen. Een analyse van oorlogsreportages van Britse, Nederlandse en Franse journalisten, respectievelijk William Beach Thomas en George Ward Price, Jean Louis Pisuisse en Johan Lüger, en Albert Londres, laat zien hoe de oorlog deze verslaggevers dwong om op hun eigen ogen en oren te vertrouwen en op basis van hun observaties een impressie van de werkelijkheid te geven. Ze zagen hun status als ooggetuige als teken van autoriteit en betrouwbaarheid. De nadruk op de ‘mediating subjectivity’ van de verslaggever betekende echter niet dat er al sprake was van de opkomst van het objectiviteitsregime.

This paper reviews the taxonomic research on the superfamily Eriophyoidea in China, with an updated checklist of 932 species belonging to 3 families, 10 subfamilies, 15 tribes and 187 genera, including a new name and a new combination: Cosella yangmingshanis nom. nov. and Aceria celtis (Huang, 2001) comb. nov., respectively. Hai-Yuan Kuang and his co-authors described 244 new species, Xiao-Yue Hong and his co-authors described 232 new species, Sui-Gai Wei and his co-authors described 122 new species, Jie-Liu Xin and his colleagues added 13 new species, Kun-Wei Huang and his colleagues described 229 new species from Taiwan, Tsan Huang, and his co-authors added 10 new species from Taiwan. Reports on the biology and control of the Eriophyoidea are relatively few in China, and these are briefly reviewed.

Daphniphyllum glaucescens Blume ssp. oldhamii (Hemsl.) Huang is an important subtropical evergreen tree in Taiwan. Seeds of D. glaucescens have non-deep, simple, epicotyl morphophysiological dormancy, and a minimum of 10–12 weeks is required for the first step of seedling production, i.e. hypocotyl emergence. It is not known how to decrease the time for seedling production and how to store seeds for retention of viability. We determined the effects of (i) gibberellic acid and cold-stratification on germination (hypocotyl emergence) and (ii) storage temperature and seed moisture content (MC) on germinability. Exogenous application of GA3 and of GA4 promoted germination and increased the germination rate. Moist cold-stratification at 5°C also promoted germination; the longer the stratification period, the faster the rate of germination. More than 70% of seeds (fresh seeds, MC = 37.6%) dried to an MC of 6.4%, 8.5% and 25.5% (fresh weight basis) retained germinability after a 1-month storage at 5°C, whereas germination percentage decreased to 0–2% after a 12-month storage at the same temperature. Germination percentage of seeds dried to the same MC and stored at 15°C decreased to 0% after 8 months, whereas seeds stored at −20°C did not germinate even after just 1 month of storage. The present evidence suggests that seeds of D. glaucescens have intermediate rather than orthodox or recalcitrant storage behaviour.

ABSTRACT Long-term nonprogressor AD-18 has been infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) for at least 16 years. During the past 5 years, he has had undetectable levels of plasma viremia, and HIV-1 cannot be isolated from him. Sequencing of proviral DNA indicates that the only HIV-1 sequences that can be identified in AD-18 have gross defects in the p17-encoding regions of the gag gene (Y. Huang, L. Zhang, and D. D. Ho, Virology 240:36–49, 1998). However, AD-18 has strong, sustained antibody responses to several HIV-1 antigens, including p17. Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte responses to Env and Gag antigens have gradually diminished over the past 4 years, at a time when the titers of antibodies to the same proteins have remained stable. We discuss what these observations might mean for the generation and maintenance of immunological memory.

Abstract:
BackgroundGeneralized anxiety disorder (GAD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) are co-morbid and associated with similar neural disruptions during emotion regulation. In contrast, the lack of optimism examined here may be specific to GAD and could prove an important biomarker for that disorder.MethodUnmedicated individuals with GAD (n = 18) and age-, intelligence quotient- and gender-matched SAD (n = 18) and healthy (n = 18) comparison individuals were scanned while contemplating likelihoods of high- and low-impact negative (e.g. heart attack; heartburn) or positive (e.g. winning lottery; hug) events occurring to themselves in the future.ResultsAs expected, healthy subjects showed significant optimistic bias (OB); they considered themselves significantly less likely to experience future negative but significantly more likely to experience future positive events relative to others (p < 0.001). This was also seen in SAD, albeit at trend level for positive events (p < 0.001 and p < 0.10, respectively). However, GAD patients showed no OB for positive events (t17 = 0.82, n.s.) and showed significantly reduced neural modulation relative to the two other groups of regions including the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and caudate to these events (p < 0.001 for all). The GAD group further differed from the other groups by showing increased neural responses to low-impact events in regions including the rostral mPFC (p < 0.05 for both).ConclusionsThe neural dysfunction identified here may represent a unique feature associated with reduced optimism and increased worry about everyday events in GAD. Consistent with this possibility, patients with SAD did not show such dysfunction. Future studies should consider if this dysfunction represents a biomarker for GAD.

Post-pollination barriers to intergeneric hybridization between Easter cactus [Hatiora gaertneri (Regel) Barthlott, H. rosea (Lagerheim) Barthlott, and H. ×graeseri Barthlott ex D. Hunt] and holiday cactus [Schlumbergera truncata (Haworth) Moran and S. ×buckleyi (Buckley) Tjaden] were determined and procedures were devised for circumventing these barriers. Examination of Hatiora and Schlumbergera pistils at 72 hours after intergeneric crosses indicated no abnormalities in pollen germination or pollen tube growth in the upper style. Pollen tubes of Hatiora were arrested in the lower half of Schlumbergera styles and failed to enter the ovary. Schlumbergera pollen tubes exhibited normal growth in Hatiora styles but most tubes lost directionality, burst, or failed to penetrate the micropyles after reaching the ovary. Three growth regulators (BA, GA3 and NAAm) were applied individually to ovaries of `Crimson Giant' Easter cactus after intergeneric crosses. GA3 and NAAm increased fruit set compared to the control (lanolin alone) or BA but none of the fruit harvested 160 days after pollination contained mature embryos. Four progeny were obtained when a short-styled S. ×buckleyi clone was crossed as a female parent with H. ×graeseri. Isozyme patterns and morphological characteristics confirmed that the four progeny were intergeneric hybrids. This is the first report of successful intergeneric hybridization between Hatiora and Schlumbergera. Chemical names used: N-(phenylmethyl)-1H-purine-6-amine [benzyladenine (BA)]; gibberellic acid (GA3); α-naphthaleneacetamide (NAAm).

In dit artikel worden de grenzen en het belang van de continuïteitsveronderstelling verkend. De thans bestaande praktijk wordt vergeleken met de wet, RJ-richtlijnen, en Richtlijnen voor de Accountantscontrole. Betoogd wordt dat de bestaande praktijk, die synchroon loopt met de wijze van aanpak in de International Accounting Standards, onwenselijk en onjuist is en misverstanden over zich af moet roepen.

Abstract:
Zusammenfassung Gegenstand und Ziel Charakterisierung der Ätiologie von Meningoenzephalitis und Meningitis beim Hund in einer Klinikpopulation. Material und Methoden Retrospektive Studie (2011–2016) mit Auswertung der klinischen und diagnostischen Daten von Hunden mit einer Liquorpleozytose (> 15/3 µl). Einschlusskriterien waren vorliegende Befunde einer zytologischen Liquoruntersuchung oder einer histopathologischen Untersuchung des ZNS. Beurteilt wurde, ob im Liquorzellbild oder bei den routinemäßig durchgeführten Untersuchungen auf Infektionskrankheiten Hinweise auf eine infektiöse Ätiologie vorlagen. Ergebnisse Insgesamt 62 Hunde erfüllten die Einschlusskriterien. Bei 14,5 % (n = 9) der Hunde lag eine reaktive Liquorpleozytose aufgrund einer anderen strukturellen Erkrankung des Gehirns wie ein Tumor oder Infarkt vor. Bei 56,5 % (n = 35) wurde eine Meningoenzephalitis oder Meningitis unbekannter Ursache diagnostiziert. Bei 29,0 % (n = 18) der Hunde bestand aufgrund der Diagnostik bezüglich Infektionskrankheiten oder durch Nachweis von Bakterien im Liquorzellbild (n = 5) der Verdacht auf eine infektiöse Meningoenzephalitis oder Meningitis. Bei 6 (9,7 %) diese Hunden war die Diagnose eindeutig, bei 9 (14,5 %) Hunden konnte nur ein Verdacht auf eine infektiöse Meningoenzephalitis oder Meningitis erhoben werden und bei 3 (4,8 %) Hunden lagen Befunde unklarer Bedeutung vor. Schlussfolgerung Die häufigste Ursache für eine Liquorpleozytose war eine Meningoenzephalitis oder Meningitis unbekannter Ursache. Dennoch gab es bei 29 % der Hunde Hinweise auf eine mögliche infektiöse Ätiologie. Daher ist es für eine sichere Diagnose wichtig, den Liquor zytologisch zu beurteilen und Untersuchungen auf Infektionskrankheiten durchzuführen. Klinische Relevanz Die Meningoenzephalitis/Meningitis unbekannter Ursache erfordert eine immunsuppressive Therapie. Für den Ausschluss einer infektiösen Meningoenzephalitis oder Meningitis haben Liquorzytologie und Untersuchungen auf Infektionskrankheiten eine besondere Bedeutung.

Interne marktcommissa-ris Bolkestein meldt dat de Europese Commissie in het document ‘EU Financial Reporting Strategy: the way forward’ de intentie heeft uitge-sproken om voor te stellen dat alle beursgenoteer-de ondernemingen in Europa verplicht zijn uiter-lijk in 2005 hun geconsolideerde jaarrekening op te stellen in overeenstemming met International Accounting Standards (IAS). Dat is nogal wat, zeker ook voor Nederlandse ondernemingen. Want de naleving van IAS in Nederland is nog altijd zeer beperkt.

Five common sources of perlite used in the North American horticultural industry were tested for their release of fluoride during five successive teachings with pH 5.2 sodium phosphate buffer (1 cc perlite/ml buffer). Soluble fluoride in the first leachate ranged from 0.05 to 0.8 mg/l and in the fifth leachate from 0.01 to 0.18 mg/l. Lilium Asiatic hybrids `Pixie Grange' and `Sunray', Chlorophytum comosum (Thumb.) Jacques `Variegatum', and Gibasis pellucida (Martens & Gal.) D. Hunt `Bridal Veil' were. grown in sphagnum peat moss plus perlite substrates ranging up to 50% perlite and at substrate pH levels from 4.6 to 7.0. No fluoride toxicity occurred in these crops in any treatments. The precaution against the use of perlite in substrates used for growing fluoride sensitive crops needs to be reconsidered.

We have studied the effects of various Kampo medicines on P-glycoprotein (P-gp), a drug transporter,in vitro. The present study focused on Daiokanzoto (Da-Huang-Gan-Cao-Tang), which shows the most potent inhibitory effects on P-gp among the 50 Kampo medicines studied, and investigated the P-gp inhibitory effects of Daiokanzoto herbal ingredients (rhubarb and licorice root) and their components by an ATPase assay using human P-gp membrane. Both rhubarb and licorice root significantly inhibited ATPase activity, and the effects of rhubarb were more potent than those of licorice root. The content of rhubarb in Daiokanzoto is double that in licorice root, and the inhibition patterns of Daiokanzoto and rhubarb involve both competitive and noncompetitive inhibition, suggesting that the inhibitory effects of Daiokanzoto are mainly due to rhubarb. Concerning the components of rhubarb, concentration-dependent inhibitory effects were observed for (−)-catechin gallate, (−)-epicatechin gallate, and (−)-epigallocatechin gallate. In conclusion, rhubarb may cause changes in the drug dispositions of P-gp substrates through the inhibition of P-gp. It appears that attention should be given to the interactions between these drugs and Kampo medicines containing rhubarb as an herbal ingredient.

De nieuwe economie houdt ons bezig. Tot voor kort was elk initiatief dat ook maar een beetje zinvol leek onmiddellijk geschikt voor een beurs-gang. Ook venture capital was er te over. De International Herald Tribune (het blad op 33000 foot) gaf een prachtige typering van de gekte bij investeerders: ‘Als venture capitalists een ook maar enigszins zinvolle business propositie hadden aangehoord dan was het een volstrekte verspilling van hun tijd om er niet meteen een paar miljoen in te stoppen’. Na april jongstleden is het allemaal wat getem-perd. We zijn wat sceptischer geworden en willen toch weer wat meer zekerheden en enig track record zien voordat we voor iets warm lopen.

Im Grunde könnten wir eine Serie starten zum Thema Arbeitgeberattraktivität. Am Ende hatten wir viel zu viel Material; zwei Gesprächspartner, Gunda Dittmer (Klinikum Itzehoe) und Josef Hug (Städtisches Klinikum Karlsruhe) sind leider gar nicht erwähnt. Wir werden uns aber bei ihnen melden, denn was sie sagten, ist berichtenswert – es passte nur nicht in den Fluss der Geschichte, zumal der Platz irgendwann aufgezehrt ist. Hybrid, Hybrid Manche Begriffe traut man sich nicht mehr zu hinterfragen, sie scheinen allgemeiner Wortschatz und doch leicht diffus. Hybrid-OP etwa – ist jeder OP mit einem C-Bogen schon ein Hybrid-OP? Wenn ja, hat einen solchen OP nicht längst jedes Krankenhaus? Tiere, vor allem Hund und Katze, sind des Menschen bester Freund. Indes sind respiratorische Allergien auf Tierproteine gar sind nicht so selten und in gewissen Regionen sind diese sogar häufiger als auf Hausstaubmilben. Bei den Tierallergien handelt es sich meist um eine perenniale Allergenexposition, so dass durch den stetigen Allergenkontakt die Symptome – Rhinokonjunktivitis und Asthma – weniger heftig imponieren als bei einer saisonalen Allergie. Die beste und effektivste therapeutische Maßnahme bei einer Tierallergie ist den Kontakt mit dem relevanten Tier zu meiden. Allerdings ergeben sich dabei oft emotionale Konflikte, so dass anstelle einer optimalen Therapie meist Verhaltens- und Umgebungsgestaltungsänderungen versucht werden, den Tierkontakt auf ein Minimum zu beschränken. Pilzsporen gelten seit Jahrzehnten als mögliche Ursache für eine Atemwegsallergie. Dabei sind zwei Pilzklassen allergologisch bedeutend, nämlich die Schlauch- (Ascomyzeten) und die Ständerpilze (Basidiomyzeten). Anerkannte Allergene stammen hauptsächlich von den Fungi Imperfecti wie Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus fumigatus und Cladosporium herbarum; aber kürzlich wurden auch Allergene von Ständerpilzen isoliert wie vom Schopftintling oder dem kubanischen Kahlköpfling. Klinisch lassen sich die Beschwerden kaum von einer Pollenallergie unterscheiden; allerdings werden Asthmaattacken vor allem bei jüngeren Personen vermehrt in Zusammenhang mit einer atmosphärischen Pilzsporenbelastung beurteilt. Pilzbestandteile können aber auch für Ekzeme (Kontakt- oder atopisches Ekzem) oder eine Nahrungsmittelallergie kausal sein. Pilzsporen kommen ubiquitär in der Luft vor und können daher oft nicht gemieden werden. Dennoch sind in Wohnräumen einige Maßnahmen zur Eindämmung von Pilzwachstum sinnvoll und realisierbar. Sowohl für die Tier- wie auch die Pilzallergie ist die spezifische Immuntherapie nur in bestimmten Fällen indiziert und muss allergologisch korrekt belegt sein.

Ba-wei-di-huang-wan (Hachimi-jio-gan, TJ-7) has been frequently used for the treatment of sterilitas virilis, prostatic disorders, etc. The Hormonal effects of TJ-7 were studied using thymidine kinase (TK), an enzyme that catalyzes the phosphorylation of thymidine via the pyrimidine salvage pathway. TH isozyme activity increase in rapidly proliferating tissues. TJ-7 may act as a weak androgen and enhance prostatic TK and in particular, a specific TK isozy activity. and also as an anti-androgen and reduce prostatic TK activity in the presence of androgen in immature rats.

Considering the gallium phosphide (GaP) semiconductors doped with sulfur (S) and zinc (Zn) acceptors, we have studied the behavior of Huang-Rhys factor S theor as a function of the donor–acceptor (D–A) pair separation R. It turned out that the form of the bands — broad or narrow — that are attributed to (D–A) recombination, depends on the values of the pair separation — large or small, respectively. More specifically for R=0.5 nm we obtain S theor =0.117 and for R=3.5 nm, S theor =3.616. The above values of the factor S impose sub-Poissonian (with ℏω=49.97 meV) and super-Poissonian (with ℏω=78 meV) distribution shapes on the bands.

Background. Ulcerative colitis (UC), a chronic and nonspecific inflammatory bowel disease, seriously affects the quality of patients’ life. Han Re Bing Yong Fa (treating diseases with both cool- and warm-natured herbs) is a classical therapeutic principle of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which is often used to treat chronic diseases, including UC. The Gan Jiang-Huang Qin-Huang Lian-Ren Shen decoction (GJHQHLRSD), a representative of Han Re Bing Yong Fa, is effective in alleviating inflammatory symptoms in UC. However, the pharmacological mechanism underlying its anti-inflammatory effect remains unclear. Methods. A network pharmacology strategy, including the construction and analysis of the drug–disease network, was used to explore the complex mechanism of GJHQHLRSD treatment of UC. In addition, molecular docking technology was used to preliminarily examine the binding ability of the potential active components and core therapeutic targets of GJHQHLRSD. Results. The network pharmacology results revealed 140 targets of GJHQHLRSD which are involved in UC. The PPI network analysis identified seven target genes: BCL2L1, NR3C1, ALOX5, S1PR5, NR1I2, CYP2D6, and LPAR6. The molecular docking results revealed that the following displayed strongest combined effects: EGFR with kaempferol, ERK1 with worenine, STAT3 with Palmidin A, BCL2L1 with diop and VEGFA with ginsenoside Rg3. The KEGG and gene ontology enrichment analyses results indicated that GJHQHLRSD functions by regulating the EGFR signaling pathway in UC treatment. Other effective biological processes involved in UC treatment included cancer-related as well as inflammation and viral infection signaling pathways, such as the “MicroRNAs in cancer,” “TNF signaling pathway,” and “JAK-STAT signaling pathway.” Conclusions. This study reflects the multicomponent, multitarget, and multipathway characteristics of the action mechanism of GJHQHLRSD in treating UC. Furthermore, it helps better understand the TCM therapeutic principle of Han Re Bing Yong Fa and explore novel candidate drug targets for UC treatment.

Resonance Raman analysis is performed in order to gain insight into the nature of impurity-induced Raman features in GaN:(Mn,Mg) hosting Mn-Mgk cation complexes and representing a prospective strategic material for the realization of full-nitride photonic devices emitting in the infra-red. It is found that in contrast to the case of GaN:Mn, the resonance enhancement of Mn-induced modes at sub-band excitation in Mg co-doped samples is not observed at an excitation of 2.4 eV, but shifts to lower energies, an effect explained by a resonance process involving photoionization of a hole from the donor level of Mn to the valence band of GaN. Selective excitation within the resonance Raman conditions allows the structure of the main Mn-induced phonon band at ~670 cm−1 to be resolved into two distinct components, whose relative intensity varies with the Mg/Mn ratio and correlates with the concentration of different Mn-Mgk cation complexes. Moreover, from the relative intensity of the 2LO and 1LO Raman resonances at inter-band excitation energy, the Huang-Rhys parameter has been estimated and, consequently, the strength of the electron-phonon interaction, which is found to increase linearly with the Mg/Mn ratio. Selective temperature-dependent enhancement of the high-order multiphonon peaks is due to variation in resonance conditions of exciton-mediated outgoing resonance Raman scattering by detuning the band gap.

Malfunktion. Material und Methoden: In die Studie gingen 493 Hunde (Alter: 7,0 [3,0–9,0] Jahre) und 278 Katzen (Alter: 10,0 [6,5–12,0] Jahre) aus vier europäischen Ländern ein. Die Hunde/ Katzen gehörten 34/12 verschiedenen Rassen an oder waren Mischlinge. Das veterinärmedizinische Fachpersonal vor Ort führte bei den Tieren einen renalen Funktionstest mit modifizierter Bestimmung der Plasma-Clearance von exogenem Kreatinin zur quantitativen Bestimmung der GFR durch. Das Kreatinin im Serum wurde mittels Jaffé-Methode ermittelt. Die optimalen Grenzwerte für das eSk mit maximaler diagnostischer Sensitivität und Spezifität zur Erkennung einer renalen Eu-/Malfunktion wurden mithilfe der Receiver-OperatingCharacteristic-(ROC-)Analytik bestimmt. Ergebnisse: Von den Hunden erwiesen sich 238 Tiere (48,3%) als nierengesund (GFR ≥ 70% der Norm) und 255 Tiere (51,7%) als unterschiedlich intensiv nierenkrank (GFR < 70% der Norm). Bei den Katzen waren 104 Tiere (37,4%) nierengesund und 174 Tiere (62,6%) nierenkrank. Zur Unterscheidung von nierengesund/-krank ergaben sich für Hunde/Katzen optimale Grenzwerte des eSk von 98/141 μmol/l. Die diagnostische Qualität dieser Grenzwerte war mit der Sensitivität bzw. Spezifität von 77 bzw. 82% (Hunde) und 82 bzw. 73% (Katzen) unzureichend niedrig gegeben. Wiesen die nierenkranken Hunde/Katzen nur noch eine GFR von ≤ 30% der Norm auf, betrugen die optimalen Grenzwerte des eSk 153/274 μmol/l. Ihre diagnostische Qualität war mit der durchschnittlichen Sensitivität bzw. Spezifität von 100 bzw. 89% bei Hunden gut und von 79 bzw. 96% bei Katzen zufrieden stellend gegeben. Klinische Relevanz: Infolge niedriger Werte der diagnostischen Sensitivität bzw. Spezifität eignet sich der eSk-Gehalt bei Hunden und Katzen zur Frühdiagnostik einer renalen Malfunktion nur wenig oder gar nicht. Eine verlässliche Frühdiagnostik erfordert einen renalen Funktionstest mit quantitativer GFR-Bestimmung. Erst nierenkranke Tiere mit einer GFR von nur noch ≤ 30% der Norm können anhand der eSk-Werte diagnostisch gut (Hund) oder zufrieden stellend (Katze) erfasst werden.

Ớt A Riêu (Capsicum frutescens L.) được xếp vào nhóm ớt hiểm; là đặc sản nổi tiếng của huyện miền núi huyện Đông Giang, tỉnh Quảng Nam. Nghiên cứu gồm 03 thí nghiệm, mỗi thí nghiệm được bố trí theo phương pháp khối hoàn toàn ngẫu nhiên (RCBD). Thực hiện từ tháng 1 đến tháng 5 năm 2019 tại huyện Đông Giang, tỉnh Quảng Nam nhằm xây dựng các biện pháp kỹ thuật chính, tiến tới hoàn thiện quy trình nhân giống cây ớt A Riêu phục vụ sản xuất. Kết quả nghiên cứu đã xác định được: Xử lý hạt giống ớt A Riêu với dung dịch GA3 30 ppm trong thời gian 04 giờ là phù hợp. Cây giống được trồng trên hỗn hợp giá thể 60% đất phù sa + 1% supe lân + 29% phân chuồng + 10% trấu hun và có phun phân bón lá Yogen 30-10-10 + TE theo định kỳ, thời vụ gieo trồng tốt nhất là vào tháng 4 và vườn nhân giống được che bóng 40 - 60%. ABSTRACTA Rieu chili (Capsicum frutescens L.) called the bird's eye chili, a local specialities of Dong Giang district, Quang Nam province. The study consisted of 03 experiments. Each experiment was arranged in a Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with 03 replications and implemented from January to May 2019 with the objective to develop technical practices in propagating A Rieu chili for production. The research results determined that treatment of A Rieu chili seed with 30 ppm GA3 for 4 hours was appropriate. Seedlings which were planted on mixture of 60% alluvial soil + 1% super phosphate + 29% manure + 10% rice ash and sprayed with foliar fertilizer Yogen 30-10-10 + TE showed the best performance. The best planting season is in April and suitable light condition is shaded of 40 - 60%.

Hachimi-jio-gan (HJG), a chinese herbal formula, and a placebo were given to 12 healthy adults, and the changes in blood flow in the central retinal artery were observed with the latest ultrasonic diagnosis device before and after administration. After administration of HJG, the systolic flow velocity, diastolic flow velocity and mean flow velocity in the central retinal artery showed significant increases. No change was observed in vascular resistance. The subjects deemed suitable for use of HJG showed remarkable increases in blood flow. No changes in blood flow velocities and vascular resistance were observed after administration of the placebo. HJG is frequently used in the aged, often with eye diseases such as cataract. It has been reported that a decrease of blood flow in the central retinal artery becomes more marked in proportion to the progress of various eye diseases. As increases in blood flow were obvious in the cases that were treated with HJG, it is suggested that increases in blood flow in the central retinal artery due to HJG give direct evidence supporting the positive effects of HJG on eye diseases.

Abstract Da-Huang-Gan-Cao decoction (DHGCD), which is a classic formula in traditional Chinese medicine, has been clinically used for the treatment of vomiting, constipation, pancreatitis, and cholelithiasis in China and Japan. In this study, a rapid and validated method using HPLC coupled with triple quadrupole MS was developed for the simultaneous determination of 13 components in DHGCD. Separation was performed on an XBridge BEH C18 column (50 × 2.1 mm, 2.5 μm) with a gradient elution of acetonitrile and0.1% formic acid in water. All calibration curves showed good linear regression (r &gt; 0.9981) within the test range. LODs and LOQs were in the range of 1.0–20 and 2.6–69 ng/mL, respectively. The proposed method was applied for the analysis of the target compounds in 10 batches of DHGCD within a total time of 10 min. This method was conducive for the QC of DHGCD.

This paper focuses on the onset of tip-leakage cavitation on a fixed hydrofoil. The objectives are to investigate the effect of gap size on the flow structure, conditions of cavitation inception, the associated bubble dynamics and cavitation noise. The same hydrofoil with three tip gap sizes of 12%, 28%, and 52% of the maximum tip thickness are studied. Controlled cavitation tests are performed after de-aerating the water in the tunnel and using electrolysis to generate cavitation nuclei. The experiments consist of simultaneously detecting cavitation inception using a 2000 fps digital camera (visual) and two accelerometers (“acoustic”) mounted on the test section windows. Good agreement between these methods is achieved when the visual observations are performed carefully. To obtain the time-dependent noise spectra, portions of the signal containing cavitation noise are analyzed using Hilbert-Huang transforms. Rates of cavitation events as a function of the cavitation index (σ) for the three gap sizes are also measured. The cavitation inception index decreases with increasing gap sizes. The experiments demonstrate that high-amplitude noise spikes are generated when the bubbles are distorted and “shredded”—broken to several bubbles following their growth in the vortex core. Mere changes to bubble size and shape caused significantly lower noise. High-resolution particle image velocimetry (PIV) with a vector spacing of 180 μm is used to measure the flow, especially to capture the slender tip vortices where cavitation inception is observed. The instantaneous realizations are analyzed to obtain probability density functions of the circulation of the leakage vortex. The circulation decreases with increasing gap sizes and minimum pressure coefficients in the cores of these vortices are estimated using a Rankine model. The diameter of the vortex core varied between 540–720 μm. These coefficients show a very good agreement with the measured cavitation inception indices.

Toeval of niet, alle hier aangehaalde figuren droegen in de eerste plaats bij tot de kennis van infectieuze ziekten. Als microbiologen kunnen hier vernoemd worden: Edmond Nocard, wiens naam werd gegeven aan het door hem beschreven bacteriegeslacht Nocardia en de gelijknamige ziekte, Victor Babès en Arnold Theiler die zich verdienstelijk hebben gemaakt in de parasitologie. Daarvan getuigen de geslachten Babesia en Theileria. De welbekende Salmonella en salmonellose ontlenen hun naam aan de Amerikaanse dierenarts Daniël Salmon. Karl F. Meyer gaf de eerste beschrijving van wat nu Mycoplasma is en leverde baanbrekend werk in de studie naar miltvuur en een reeks andere ziekte-agentia. Niet minder belangrijk was zijn aandeel in de introductie van de begrippen kiemreservoir en latente infectie. Naast de ontdekkingen in verband met infectieuze ziekten is er het aandeel van dierenartsen in de kennis van immuniteit. Auguste Chauveau vormde met zijn ‘retentietheorie’ de basis van de kennis van weerstand tegen bacteriën en virussen. De ontwikkeling door Gaston Ramon van anatoxines, geneutraliseerde toxines die immuniteit geven tegen onder meer tetanos en difterie, vormde een mijlpaal in de dagelijks toegepaste geneeskunde. Als chronologisch laatste in de rij moet Peter Doherty vermeld worden. Hij is de enige dierenarts die de Nobelprijs geneeskunde kreeg; dit voor zijn aandeel in de ontdekkingen omtrent cellulaire immuniteit.

The shapes of different organs can be explained largely by two fundamental characteristics of their epithelial rudiments - the pattern of branching and the rate of proliferation. Glial-cell-line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) has recently been implicated in the development of metanephric ureteric epithelium (Pichel, J. G., Shen, L., Sheng, H. Z., Granholm, A.-C., Drago, J., Grinberg, A., Lee, E. J., Huang, S. P., Saarma, M., Hoffer, B.J., Sariola, H. and Westphal, H. (1996). We have analysed the target cells of GDNF and the manner in which it controls ureteric development, and have compared it with other growth factors that have been associated with the regulation of branching morphogenesis, namely hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGFbeta1). We show that GDNF binds directly to the tips of ureteric bud branches, and that it has the ability to promote primary ureteric buds from various segments of Wolffian duct and to attract ureteric branches towards the source of GDNF. It increases cell adhesion, but is not obviously mitogenic for ureteric cells. The data indicate that GDNF is required primarily for bud initiation. Comparison of GDNF, HGF and TGFbeta1 suggests that the latter act later than GDNF, and may represent a partially redundant set of mesenchyme-derived growth factors that control ureteric development. Thus, GDNF is the first defined inducer in the embryonic metanephric kidney.

Abstract:
Huanglongbing (HLB) or “greening” disease of citrus is caused by phloem-limited, uncultured bacteria in the genus “Candidatus Liberibacter”. HLB is one of the most destructive diseases of citrus worldwide and is considered so dangerous to a U.S. citrus production that the USDA has listed “Ca. Liberibacter species” as a Select Agent. HLB is spread by the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri, which was intercepted 40 times by APHIS/PPQ at U.S. ports between 1985 and 1998, became established in Florida by 1998, and more recently in Texas (1). HLB was first detected in the United States near Miami, FL during August 2005, and to date has been confirmed to have spread to 12 Florida counties. In addition to citrus, Murraya paniculata (orange jasmine) is a preferred host of D. citri, and retail trade in this ornamental shrub is strongly implicated in the distribution of D. citri (1). M. paniculata is reported to be a cryptic or largely asymptomatic host of “Ca. Liberibacter” (4), but another report concludes that the bacteria cannot replicate in M. paniculata (2). The epidemiological significance of murraya as a host for the HLB pathogen is therefore unclear. We report here the transmission of “Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus” from M. paniculata to citrus. Two M. paniculata plants, suspected of harboring “Ca. Liberibacter” because of their proximity to HLB-infected citrus and infested with D. citri, were removed from the field, treated with insecticide, and transferred to a quarantine facility. Both plants tested positive for “Ca. Liberibacter” by nested PCR using primers OI1 and OI2 (3) as the first set and primers CGO3F (RGG GAA AGA TTT TAT TGG AG) and CGO5R (GAA AAT AYC ATC TCT GAT ATC GT) as the second set. Two, young, sweet orange plants (Citrus sinensis) grown and maintained in psyllid-free greenhouses in Gainesville, FL were infected by dodder (Cuscuta pentagona) grown from seed. After the dodder had become well established on the orange plants, the orange plants were moved adjacent to the two murraya plants and the dodder from the citrus was draped over the murraya. Coinfection of murraya by dodder occurred within a few days. Sixty days later, both murraya plants, both sweet orange plants, and the connecting dodder all repeatedly tested positive for “Ca. Liberibacter” by nested PCR. Beginning 2 weeks later, the orange plants tested positive by standard PCR using primer set OI1 and OI2 or CGO3F and CGO5R, but remained without typical greening symptoms. Sequencing of the PCR products confirmed amplification of “Ca. L. asiaticus” DNA. We conclude that M. paniculata can serve as an infection source of a Select Agent since it can host the HLB pathogen for at least 2 months and the HLB pathogen can be transmitted to sweet orange during this time. Zusammenfassung Gegenstand und Ziel: Gewinn epidemiologischer Daten zur Fütterung von Hunden und Katzen in Deutschland. Material und Methoden: 865 Hundeund 243 Katzenbesitzer wurden anhand standardisierter Fragebögen zu ihrem Tier (Alter, Geschlecht, Gewicht, Ernährungszustand, Gesundheit), dessen Fütterung inklusive Belohnungen und Zusätzen, den Gründen für eine Futterumstellung und zur eigenen Person (Alter, Geschlecht, Schulbildung, Beruf) befragt. Die Befragungen fanden in Tierarztpraxen, Hundeschulen, Tierheimen, Parkanlagen und via Internet statt. Zudem wurde der Body Condition Score (BCS) der Tiere durch ihre Besitzer sowie die Interviewerin beurteilt. Ergebnisse: Das Durchschnittsalter der Hunde lag bei 4,8 Jahren, das der Katzen bei 6,8 Jahren. Das Gewicht reichte beim Hund von 2,2 bis 95 kg, bei der Katze von 2 bis 11 kg. Rund 52% der Hunde und Katzen waren übergewichtig (BCS 6–9). Zwischen der Beurteilung der Besitzer bzw. der Interviewerin gab es Differenzen. Viele Besitzer unterschätzten den BCS und erkannten vor allem beginnendes Übergewicht (BCS 6–7) nicht. 58% der Hundeund 90% der Katzenbesitzer verwendeten ausschließlich handelsübliche Fertigfutter, 35% bzw. knapp 10% kombinierten diese mit zusätzlichen Futtermitteln. Knapp 8% der Hundeund < 1% der Katzenbesitzer verfütterten selbst zubereitete Rationen. Ältere (> 7 Jahre) und kranke Hunde erhielten häufiger selbst hergestellte Rationen. Ältere Besitzer (≥ 46 Jahre) tendierten vermehrt dazu, das Futter selbst zuzubereiten, während die Schulbildung und die Berufstätigkeit keinen Einfluss auf die Fütterung hatten. Ein Zusammenhang zwischen Art der Fütterung und BCS bestand nicht. Besitzer mit geringerer Schulbildung sowie Hausfrauen und Rentner hatten häufiger übergewichtige Tiere. Futterbelohnungen erhielten 95% der Hunde und 65% der Katzen. Ältere und berufstätige Besitzer gaben prozentual seltener Belohnungen. Schlussfolgerungen: Übergewicht ist das größte ernährungsbedingte Problem. Im Vergleich zu früheren Studien hat sich die Zahl übergewichtiger Tiere erhöht. Klinische Relevanz: Tierbesitzer sollten frühzeitig auf Übergewicht hingewiesen werden, da sie den Beginn der Adipositas häufig nicht wahrnehmen. Die meisten Tierbesitzer verabreichen Belohnungen, was bei Diäten berücksichtigt werden muss.

Abstract:
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has a high prevalence and low cure rate and represents a significant health issue. Oxidative stress is common in CKD due to metabolic disorders, inflammation, and impaired renal function changing normal proteins into advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs). Huang Gan formula (HGF) is a new type of traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Although we previously investigated the protective effects of HGF against oxidative stress, the mechanism of HGF in CKD is still not fully understood. In this study, we used western blotting, quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and biochemical assays to show that HGF significantly decreased AOPP-induced oxidative stress damage. Moreover, the protective effects of HGF might be associated with upregulation of the advanced glycation end product receptor 1 (AGE-R1) and downregulation of the receptor for advance glycation end products (RAGE). Treatment with HGF and the Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) inhibitor, AG4-90, significantly attenuated AOPP-induced JAK2/STAT3 protein levels. These findings indicate that HGF inhibits AOPP-mediated biological responses by inactivating the JAK2/STAT3 pathway. In conclusion, HGF eliminated AOPP-induced effects in human mesangial cells (HMCs) by interrupting JAK2/STAT3 signaling, which altered RAGE/AGE-R1 expression and reduced oxidative stress in CKD.

Volgens de Franstalige patriottische pers en literatuur van kort na de Eerste Wereldoorlog was die desertie uitsluitend te wijten aan de defaitistische ingesteldheid van de Vlaamse Frontbeweging en de talrijke aansporingen waarmee hun vier afgezanten naar de Duitsers (Jules Charpentier, Karel De Schaepdrijver, Vital Haesaert en Carlos Van Sante) de Vlaamse soldaten aan het IJzerfront bestookten. De Vlaamse historici probeerden die beschuldiging op allerlei manieren te weerleggen of schoven de verantwoordelijkheid voor die desertie in de schoenen van Antoon Pira en zijn Algemeen Vlaamsch Democratische Verbond. Geen enkele historicus ging daarbij na wat de deserteurs zelf over hun desertie naar de vijand te vertellen hadden. Dit deden zij nochtans uitvoerig tijdens de verschillende gerechtelijke ondervragingen waaraan zij na de oorlog werden onderworpen wanneer zij konden worden aangehouden. Het feit dat zij daarbij al strafbaar waren van zodra zij wetens en willens deserteerden ongeacht hun eigenlijke motief, liet hen daarbij toe om dit motief vrij complexloos mee te delen. Geen enkele van de overlopers van wie het strafdossier bewaard is, gaf echter toe dat hij omwille van de Vlaamse kwestie was overgelopen. Ook de Belgische Militaire Veiligheid en de krijgsauditeurs slaagden er trouwens niet in om een verband te leggen tussen de Vlaamse Frontbeweging en de Belgische deserties naar de vijand.________Desertion to the enemy in the Belgian front army during the First World War (part 2)Much has already been written about the reasons why Belgian soldiers deserted to the German enemy during the First World War. According to the French language patriotic press and literature dating from shortly after the First World War that desertion was exclusively due to the defeatist attitude of the Flemish Front Movement and the many exhortations with which their four representatives to the Germans (Jules Charpentier, Karel De Schaepdrijver, Vital Haesaert and Carlos Van Sante) bombarded the Flemish soldiers at the Yser Front. Flemish historians attempted in a variety of ways to refute that accusation or they shifted the responsibility for the desertion on to Antoon Pira and his Algemeen Vlaamsch Democratische Verbond (General Flemish Democratic Union). Not a single historian investigated what the deserters themselves had to say about their desertion to the enemy. However, the deserters gave extensive explanations during the detailed investigation that took place during the various judicial interrogations, to which they were submitted after the war if it was possible to arrest them. The fact that they were considered to have committed a criminal offence for having knowingly deserted whatever their actual motive, allowed them to communicate this motive without too many complexes. However, none of the defectors whose criminal records have been preserved admitted that he had defected for the sake of the Flemish Question. As is the case in all armies, the main reasons for desertion to the enemy were war-weariness and the longing to see members of their family. The Belgian Military Security and the military auditors were not able either to establish a causal link between the Flemish Front Movement and the Belgian desertions to the enemy.
