Abstract:
Abstract Chen Boda's four cleanups model in Xiaozhan, a marshy area southeast of Tianjin, was as important as Wang Guangmei's Taoyuan brigade in 1964, but is less well known. As Chairman Mao's top theorist and the editor of Red Flag, Chen Boda enjoyed support from Mao and Liu Shaoqi as he uncovered evidence of 'revisionism' in Tianjin's south suburbs. Chen's claims led to a witch-hunt that killed tens of people and tortured and imprisoned many others. Beyond Tianjin, the 'Xiaozhan experience' was promoted as a successful 'power seizure' in a central document circulated nationwide in October 1964. The document pushed the socialist education movement in a more radical direction, causing the downfall of rural cadres across China. This article draws upon archival sources, memoirs, and interviews to detail Chen Boda's contentious interactions with Tianjin officials and suburban villagers. Chen allowed the four cleanups to turn brutal in Xiaozhan, and his vision of a rural China dominated by class enemies differed from what work team members experienced. Ironically, in order to keep the Xiaozhan experience from falling apart, Chen had to resort to methods similar to those used by the village cadres he had recently overthrown. Chen Boda's meddling in Xiaozhan reveals considerable diversity—and indeed, confusion—in how top leaders interpreted and carried out Mao's shifting plans for the countryside during the four cleanups. This confusion led to disastrous outcomes for rural residents.

Abstract:
The Omnibus Law was first echoed during the inauguration of the President of theRepublic of Indonesia to be precise, on October 20, 2019. Omnibus Law is a legalconcept that will simplify a regulation. All the considerations are causedby too manyrules that have stagnated the economic growth experienced by this nation. With themany regulations, the president felt the need to take steps forward to minimize theseregulations. Acode was created that could back up all rules, namely the presence of theOmnibus Law Bill, which later the bill became a law called the Omnibus Law.Peoplewho reject and feel uneasy about the presence of the Omnibus Law Bill think that thisbill will only prioritize outside investment, making it a red carpet for foreign investors, the investment will only be enjoyed by the elite and a handful of people, which does notlead to job creation which will have an impact on improving people's welfare, makingworkers like production machines, loss of minimum wages, reducing overtime workinghours, and many other articles that castrate their own people. With the presence of thisbill, it will make this nation even more backward from democracy. The government andthe DPR should have drafted this law to protect and voice the voices of the peopleaffected by the regulations, not the other way around. Therefore, the people who are against it assess that the presence of this bill will legitimize investments that destroy the environment, ignore the assets of the people and indigenous peoples. The drafting ofthis bill was carried out behind closed doors without the participation of civil societyand recycled unconstitutional articles of centralization of authority that hurt the spiritof reform.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the efficacy of a peripheral smear examination as a screening tool for β-thalassemia trait. Materials and Methods: 17 623 Leishman-stained peripheral smears were evaluated during the period from July 2006 to September 2007. The following parameters were studied: hemoglobin, red blood cell count, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration and red cell distribution width. All the cases that showed microcytosis, hypochromia, erythrocytosis and absence of anisopoikilocytosis were suspected of having the thalassemia trait (TT), and all these cases were further evaluated with Alkaline Hemoglobin Electrophoresis for confirmation. Results: Of the 17 623 smears examined, 60 cases were considered suspicious of having TT. Alkaline hemoglobin electrophoresis carried out on all these cases revealed an elevated HbA 2 (Mean = 7.5%). Five cases evaluated were found to have other hemoglobinopathies (1 Sickle cell trait, 3 Hb-E, 1 thalassemia intermedia). Conclusion: Careful screening of peripheral smear is an invaluable screening tool for thalassemia trait (PPV - 95%). There must be awareness among the peripheral centers about the importance of peripheral smear screening and the affected persons should be counseled.

Abstract:
AbstractWhile field studies of wild chimpanzees have investigated the proximate determinants of hunting success, little attention has been paid to the decision to hunt. We present evidence from Gombe National Park, Tanzania, showing that the social factors that most strongly influence the decision to hunt red colobus monkeys are the presence of female chimpanzees with anogenital sexual swellings in the foraging party, the number of adult and adolescent males in the party, and the total size of the foraging party. Of these, the presence of one or more swollen females was the best predictor of a decision to undertake hunts of red colobus groups at all but the smalles chimpanzee foraging party size. Two likely explanations for this pattern are discussed. First, swollen females may be a primary influence on male grouping patterns, which in turn promotes hunting. Second, this finding, together with previous research showing that male chimpanzees preferentially give meat to estrous females, suggests that male chimpanzee hunting performance may be under sexual selection. While nutritional and ecological factors may influence chimpanzee hunting patterns at times, chimpanzees appear to hunt red colobus at least partially to obtain meat for use as a social and reproductive tool.

Abstract:
AbstractThere is broad agreement that the stars which explode as Type Ia supernovae are white dwarfs. They have accreted material in a binary system until they are near the Chandrasekhar mass and detonate/deflagrate. The two main scenarios for this accretion process are merging with a companion white dwarf (double degenerate scenario), or accretion from a main-sequence to red giant donor (single degenerate scenario). The donor star survives post-explosion and would provide substantial evidence for the single degenerate scenario, if found. Our team is analyzing stars in close proximity to Galactic Type Ia remnants to find surviving donor stars. In my talk I will introduce the different progenitor systems and the expected state for a donor star today. I will outline our search using high resolution spectroscopy and will present updated results.

Abstract:
In recent years, the Pterois Volitans, also known as the red lionfish, has become a serious threat by rapidly invading US coastal waters. Being a fierce predator, having no natural predator, being adaptive to different habitats, and being with high reproduction rates, the red lionfish has enervated current endeavors to control their population. This paper focuses on the first steps to reinforce these efforts by employing autonomous vehicles. To that end, an assistive underwater robotic scheme is designed to aid spear-hunting divers to locate and more efficiently hunt the lionfish. A small-sized, open source ROV with an integrated camera is programmed using Deep Learning methods to detect red lionfish in real time. Dives are restricted to a certain depth range, time, and air supply. The ROV program is designed to allow the divers to locate the red lionfish before each dive, so that they can plan their hunt to maximize their catch. Lightweight, portability, user-friendly interface, energy efficiency, and low cost of maintenance are some advantages of the proposed scheme. The developed system’s performance is examined in areas currently invaded by the red lionfish in the Gulf of Mexico. The ROV has shown success in detecting the red lionfish with high confidence in real time.

The physico-chemical and chromatic characteristics of grapes (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Monastrell) harvested at six different degree of ripeness (from August 16 to October 24, 2002) and that of the wines obtained from these grapes have been studied. The grape anthocyanins content (mg/kg of berry fresh weight) was maximum in those grapes harvested on September 11 and 16 (804.1 and 822.6 mg/kg, respectively) and decreased for grapes harvested in October. However, the results showed that the grapes with the highest anthocyanin concentration did not lead to the highest colored wines. The wines elaborated from grapes harvested on October 16 (671.9 mg of anthocyanins per kg of berry fresh weight) had the best chromatic characteristics and better withstood aging in the bottle; the extent of cell wall degradation in overly matured grapes probably facilitated the extraction of phenolic compounds from skins. However, the chromatic quality of wines made from grapes harvested one week later (October 24, the most mature grapes) was lower than that from October 16, with lower color intensity (13%lower in the wine elaborated from grapes harvested in October 24) and a percentage of yellow color 6 % higher in this wine.

Abstract:
A number of cave systems host colorful deposits of what has been termed “corrosion residue” (CR), material that appears to be the breakdown product of bedrock minerals. The CR may be red, pink, orange, ocher, brown gray, or black and usually occurs in a variety of places within caves (ceilings, walls, tops and sides of boulders, etc.). Geologists have hypothesized that CR is the long-term result of upwelling corrosive air. However, discovery of evidence of microbial activity has led to a complimentary explanation that microbes could be active participants in the production of the corrosion residue. These deposits have been cursorily examined in several caves, including Jewel Cave (SD), Lechuguilla and Spider Caves (NM), and Cueva de Villa Luz (Tabasco, Mexico) using microscopy techniques of SEM and TEM, along with EDS and WDS analysis. In all cases, the CR is a complex mixture of iron and/or manganese oxides, clays, quartz, and corroded bedrock material. In several cases, rare earth element (REE) phosphate minerals and other unusual minerals have been observed. The REE minerals are believed to result from recrystallization of apatite present in the bedrock; rare earth elements are commonly present in trace amounts within the apatite minerals. X-ray diffraction and bulk chemical analysis has shown that Fe3+ makes up the bulk if not all of the Fe-oxides in the CR while microprobe analysis of thin sections of the bedrock has found Fe2+ in dolomite as high as 700 ppm.Within much of examined material, evidence of microbial life is present in the form of structures shaped like coccoid or filamentous bacteria. There is often a close association of presumptive bacteria with small dissolution pits in corroded fragments of bedrock minerals in the CR (Figure 1). In addition to the putative bacteria, the mineral residue often hosts small star-shaped minerals containing Fe-oxide (Figure 2).

Abstract:
Acer rubrum `October Glory' has grown well in field studies across the southeastern United States. However, there is limited information on container production for this cultivar. Our objective was to evaluate first-year growth of container-grown `October Glory' at three locations with dissimilar climates in Georgia and Alabama. Rooted cuttings were planted in no. 3 containers at one location in Apr. 1995. Trees were transported the second week of June to Blairsville, Ga.; Auburn, Ala.; and Tifton, Ga. Trees were grown for 6 months until dormant and were harvested at the end of December. Location had no impact on final plant height increase (Blairsville, Auburn, and Tifton, 59.8, 53.0, and 60.2 cm, respectively). Increases in stem diameter and shoot dry mass were greatest at Tifton (8.4 mm, 17.5 g) and least at Blairsville (6.3 mm, 9.2 g), with Auburn similar to both locations (6.8 mm, 12.2 g). Root dry masses and root: shoot ratios were greatest in Tifton (17.2 g, 0.967), with no differences between Blairsville (4.9 g, 0.508) and Auburn (7.0 g, 0.641). Despite climatic dissimilarities, among locations, producers of container-grown `October Glory' could expect similar growth during the first year throughout Georgia and Alabama.

Abstract:
Even when hunting in groups is mutually beneficial, it is unclear how communal hunts are initiated. If it is costly to be the only hunter, individuals should be reluctant to hunt unless others already are. We used 70 years of data from three communities to examine how male chimpanzees ‘solve’ this apparent collective action problem. The ‘impact hunter’ hypothesis proposes that group hunts are sometimes catalysed by certain individuals that hunt more readily than others. In two communities (Kasekela and Kanyawara), we identified a total of five males that exhibited high hunt participation rates for their age, and whose presence at an encounter with red colobus monkeys increased group hunting probability. Critically, these impact hunters were observed to hunt first more often than expected by chance. We argue that by hunting first, these males dilute prey defences and create opportunities for previously reluctant participants. This by-product mutualism can explain variation in group hunting rates within and between social groups. Hunting rates declined after the death of impact hunter FG in Kasekela and after impact hunter MS stopped hunting frequently in Kanyawara. There were no impact hunters in the third, smaller community (Mitumba), where, unlike the others, hunting probability increased with the number of females present at an encounter with prey.

Abstract We studied hunting success of 13 male Red-footed Falcons by radio-telemetry in the second phase of chick rearing. We coded 484 hunting events, and the success measured in captured prey biomass/minute was exceedingly high in corn fields. This is mainly caused by the fact that the effectiveness of hunting for vertebrate prey was high on the harvested stubble fields. Moreover the observed falcons hunted for insects in these stubble field and alfalfa fields most successfully. In the studied habitat the chick feeding period of Red-footed Falcons coincide with the harvest of cereal fields, and the suddenly created lower vegetation cover increases temporarily the accessibility of prey items. Till they were available and could be efficiently harvested, the falcons hunted on the fields within a 1 km radius from the nesting colony for the more profitable vertebrate prey. Thereafter they searched for vertebrate prey on the fields located at average 1–2.5 km distance from the colony. In the later zone falcons started to hunt insects, too, but approximately third of the captured insects (36.4%) was consumed immediately and was not delivered to the colony. Conversely larger prey was almost always (98.1%) carried directly to the nest site. Only one part of the Field Voles was observed to be eaten regularly: the brain. Finally later in the breeding season falcons were observed more and more often to hunt in the nearest fields again, this time for insects. Probably due to the depletion of the distant plots, the closer fields with lower investment became a competitive alternative for the birds. Our results highlight the fact that even for such characteristic short-grass specialist birds as Red-footed Falcons the prey sources offered by arable lands might be temporarily exploited with success. Hence it is very important to integrate the measures offered by agri-environment schemes into the management of this threatened species.

Abstract:
The occurrence of Tolosa-Hunt syndrome (THS) in the setting of discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) has not been previously reported. We report a case of a 55-year-old Chinese man with established cutaneous lupus who presented with 1 week of worsening blurry vision and ptosis of the left eye with severe headache 2 weeks prior to presentation. His cranial nerve examination was significant for left afferent pupillary defect, red desaturation, ptosis, and oculomotor nerve palsy. He also presented with active DLE lesions. Magnetic resonance imaging brain demonstrated asymmetric thickening and enhancement of the left cavernous sinus consistent with THS. After a 4-week gradual steroid taper his ophthalmoplegia resolved. The unusual occurrence of THS and DLE prompts consideration of nonsystemic autoimmune disorders in diagnosis of THS.

Abstract:
This article looks at the changing attitude of the Blackwood's leading writers John Wilson and John Gibson Lockhart to the so-called Cockney Prose writers, Coleridge, Hazlitt, Hunt, Lamb, and Ollier. It shows how a tendency to lump all the Cockneys together in October 1817 slowly developed into a more discriminating attitude in the course of the revamped magazine's first year. It also shows how the principles behind that discrimination lay in Lockhart's reading of Schlegel's lectures, and in the models of scholarship and genial reading that were contained therein.

Abstract:
The last few years have been a momentous period in the life of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. One milestone was the adoption of its new Statutes by the Twenty-fifth International Conference of the Red Cross (Geneva, October 1986). Furthermore, the increasingly universal nature of the Movement and the desire to present a united front in the face of the changes and upheavals taking place in the modern world, and the “solidarity of image” which exists between the various components of the Movement and which was stressed in Resolution No. 8 of the Council of Delegates (Rio de Janeiro, November 1987), have all had an appreciable influence on the Movement's information policy—and hence that of the ICRC.

Abstract:
Average leaf area (LA) and petiole length (PL) was determined for 13 red maple selections May–Sept. 1993. Bloom types were determined based on the predominate flower structures present in Spring 1993 and 1994. Leaves were collected from an existing field study installed in Mar. 1990. Trees were drip-irrigated throughout the study, thereby eliminating moisture stress concerns. Acer×freemanii `Scarsen' (LA = 131.5 cm2), `Morgan' (LA = 93.6 cm2), and `Autumn Blaze' (LA = 83.9 cm2) had the largest leaves. Acer rubrum `Autumn Flame' (LA = 40.0 cm2) had the smallest leaves. Acer rubrum `October Glory' (PL = 17.1 cm) had the longest petioles followed by `Fairview Flame' (PL = 15.4 cm). Shortest cultivar petioles were on A. rubrum `Franksred' (PL = 9.3 cm) and `Tilford' (PL = 9.3 cm). Flowers were predominately pistillate on `Autumn Flame', `Franksred', `Morgan', `October Glory', `Redskin', `Scarsen', and `Schlesingeri'. Flowers were predominately staminate on `Fairview Flame', `Karpick', `Northwood', and `Tilford'. `Autumn Blaze' did not exhibit flowers in 1993 or 1994. Some seedlings in the study were pistillate, and others were staminate.

Abstract:
The relationship between benthic macroalgae and associated polychaetes was studied monthly from October 2014 to October 2015 along the Alexandria coast, Egypt. A total of 56 polychaete species were found among 28 macroalgal species, which belonging to green, brown and red algae. The red algae hosted pronouncedly higher number of polychaete species than the brown and green algae, particularly during winter and spring, while green algae were associated with higher number of polychaete species in January, April, August and October 2015. In contrast, the average count of polychaete individuals associated with the green algae was higher in winter and autumn than that recorded with the red algae, while low with both red and green algae in spring and summer, and very poor within the brown algae. The present study revealed that the structure of algal species my affect the diversity and abundance of the associated polychaetes and the diversity of these worms varied among the hosting algal species.

Abstract:
Young red alder (Alnusrubra Bong.) trees were frilled at breast height and the frills inoculated with cultures of Chondrostereumpurpureum (Pers. ex Fr.) Pouzar in April, June, October, and in April of the following year. Over the ensuing 4 years, healing of the frills was less and tree mortality greater in trees inoculated with C. purpureum than in the uninoculated controls in the June and October treatments. Projected mortality for trees inoculated in June and October exceeded 80%. Among inoculation treatments, there was a strong correlation (r = 0.816) between percent tree mortality and the percentage of trees on which C. purpureum basidiocarps were recorded. It was concluded that summer or autumn inoculation with C. purpureum can be more effective in controlling red alder than frilling alone, and widens the treatment window for manual control.
