Abstract:
Public procurement amounts to approximately 12% of the gross domestic product of industrialized countries. The greatest part of it is controlled by municipalities. Consequently, their procurement decisions have an enormous potential to initiate and support sustainable development. But measures that have been taken so far did not have a substantial impact on production processes and products yet. This was the starting point for heading toward one of the objectives of the European research project RELIEF (Environmental Relief Potential of Urban Action on Avoidance and Detoxification of Waste Streams through Green Public Procurement): to identify existing hurdles for green public procurement and to develop strategies for overcoming those hurdles. For this a decision-oriented view on public procurement was chosen, possible hurdles, revealed in practice, were identified with the help of a therefore developed questionnaire and their relevance for the cities participating in the RELIEF project was examined. Thus the concept of the hurdles analysis was developed. Subsequently the method was improved by expanding the questioning on other European municipalities than those taking part in the RELIEF project as well as using it within the German research project NaBesI where a case study was accomplished. Based on the experiences and outcomes of these first hurdles analyses a self-evaluation tool was developed. It shall enable municipalities to assess their hurdles for green procurement and deduce strategies on their own.

Abstract:
Agile methodology has gained wide adoption. Agile methodology, with its iterative and incremental approach for software development, has gained popularity within IT organizations that are facing a dynamic business environment. Agile software development has emerged as an alternative to the traditional Waterfall model in delivering software at a faster pace and having more receptiveness towards the changing requirements. However, Agile methodology was originally designed for small and individual teams. This makes moving Agile to large-scale organizations a complicated task. In this thesis, we will review the challenges and success factors presented by (Dikert et al., 2016) in their systematic literature review for SAFe (Scaled Agile framework). Our thesis is based on empirical research. The authors have conducted interviews to gather data to underpin or dissent from the findings in the systematic literature review regarding the challenges and success factors of implementing SAFe in organizations.

The nuclear winter that filled the vacuum created by the Internet implosion was characterized by highly conservative investments in new technologies. This was particularly true for Internet- and Web-oriented technologies since after all, being a believer just wasn't as popular as it used to be. However, life, business, and science go on, and the Web is no exception. This thesis will examine hurdles in the business case for the Semantic Web. In one sense, the Semantic Web is an extension or enhancement of the existing World Wide Web (Web). As we know it today, the Web is a rich medium that allows humans to express themselves, learn, interact, and reach an audience that was a pipe dream just a decade ago. At the same time, the Web is of limited utility to computers (machines). For example, a human being could easily recognize a postal address or the specifications of an order for steel; a machine could not. To a machine, these data would simply be elements to be rendered and displayed on a monitor, with no intrinsic or cumulative meaning. In this sense, one of the goals set for the Semantic Web is to create meaning and utility for machines that allows for interpretation and action with far less human intervention. Issues related to the challenges, practicalities, theories and opportunities of the Semantic Web will be discussed. In the process, hopefully, this thesis will identify some of the stepping stones in building a business case for this evolution. Notably, today's comments regarding the Semantic Web sound very similar to what was once said about the practicalities of eBusiness and the likelihood of its adoption.

McNairney, Fiona. "Using images to overcome communication hurdles posed by foreign site operatives." Thesis, Glasgow Caledonian University, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.572806.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the economic recession there is still demand for foreign labour in the UK construction industry. This presents many construction management problems, not least is the communication barrier. Some research examining the extent of the language barrier within the construction industry has been undertaken. Several of these studies have advocated the use of images as a means of communicating with site operatives who have little English. Other studies have actively created communication material for use in site health and safety communications. The author's research contributes to this existing body of research by exerting a stronger focus on the source -channel - delivery. Furthermore, the research was unique in that it addressed the contribution that the presenter of the communication exerted on the audience, in terms of knowledge gain and perception. The aims of the research were: to determine how images currently used within the industry are understood by site operatives of varying cultural background and language proficiency; ~ how comprehension of site specific information following an induction using images compares to inductions without images; and how the presenter of site inductions can influence audience perception and knowledge gain. An exploration into the nature and extent of the communication problem was conducted via interviews and site visits. A series of tests were then developed and piloted before '? conducting preliminary comprehension testing. Observations of site inductions were then undertaken to assess presenter credibility. Feedback from site operatives was elicited using a likert scale. Finally, knowledge gain was assessed by asking operatives open questions regarding site specific information. Qualitative analysis highlighted that health and safety images currently in use are often misinterpreted by non English speaking operatives, but, simple design changes can drastically alter comprehension toward the intended meaning. The credibility assessment method indicated that it was sensitive enough to differentiate between differences in credibility, but further development of the instrument is required. The final stage of analysis revealed that more information was transmitted to receivers when using pictorial inductions compared with text based inductions.

Abstract:
The technology of autonomous vehicles has the potential to provide a significant number of safety, efficiency and environmental benefits to those who are able to harness it. As such, it is only natural that the company which is the subject of this project should want to explore this field, since the company prides itself on being at the cutting edge of both environmental sustainability and technological advancement. This inquiry was therefore launched in order to amass a sufficient knowledge base to enable management to make informed decisions about the possible future implementation of autonomous trucks, specifically to handle the logistics flow between their production facility in Skellefteå, Sweden and the nearby harbour. The first step to achieving this objective consisted of an exploration of the state of autonomous vehicle technology as well as the regulatory framework in Sweden for operating such systems on public roadways. Information was gathered from a vast array of sources, including academic literature, official reports from various authorities, journalistic publications as well as interviews with individuals with competence or experience within this field. While the regulatory situation in Sweden at the moment offers no legal way to operate autonomous vehicles on public roads, it is possible to be granted permission to perform trials of this technology under certain conditions. An investigation was undertaken to determine whether this might be a viable option for the company’s case. As such, hazard analysis was performed on the proposed route in Skellefteå. The method for this was based off of methodology gained from sources who had previously executed safety cases for trials of autonomous technology. A list of potential hazards relevant to the operation of autonomous vehicles was composed, together with variables with which to measure their severity. The relevance and appropriate scope of these hazards and variables was then verified by discussing it with sources with competence in this field. The route was then travelled in order to observe the prevalence of the aforementioned variables. The information was completed and verified through various reports gathered from the Swedish Transport Administration and the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute. The result of the inquiry was that the autonomous technology on the market today is not sufficiently advanced to handle the specified application with an adequate level of safety. The route is also of limited use in establishing trials for testing of autonomous vehicles. While there are uses for autonomous transportation technology, great breakthroughs are needed before the technology reaches the level needed to handle such complex challenges as would be encountered on the proposed application.

Abstract:
The importance of intangible assets like brands, customer relationships, knowledge or organisational capabilities is increasing in most western economies. Recent concepts like knowledge management or intellectual capital underline the growing importance of these "soft" production factors. The financial as well as the managerial accounting are still focusing on "hard" production factors, especially the production area with their typically physical and tangible assets and the finance and investment area with financial assets. This paper is focusing on possibilities and limits of reporting on intangible resources seen from the companies point of view. We examined 343 German listed corporations of the German C-DAX indices for industries where intangible resources play a significant role for the business models of the companies (Pharmaceuticals & Health, Software, Technology, Media and Telecommunications).Using a pre-tested questionnaire the sample finally consits of 54 companies (response rate = 16 %),that could be used for the analysis.

Abstract:

According to former President Obama’s Council on Advisors of Science and Technology (PCAST) analysis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduation rates, the study concluded that United States will require an increase in STEM graduation rates by 40% to keep up with future job demands. The PCAST findings and National Center for Educational Statistics indicated that Black females are underrepresented in attaining advanced STEM degrees. To achieve increased advanced STEM degree rates, it is necessary to increase graduation rates for underrepresented Black to meet the growing demand for jobs requiring advanced STEM degrees. This narrative inquiry study explores the experiences of seven Black females who attained their advanced STEM degree, as they recalled the people and events that positively influenced their successful completion.

Utilizing Swail, Redd, and Perna’s Geometric Model of Student Persistence and Achievement as the study theoretical framework, the study findings revealed the cognitive, social, and institutional factors that influenced advanced STEM degree attainment for the study participants. Additionally, the study revealed the influences outside of the Geometric Model that impacted their degree success. This study delved into the participants’ kindergarten through graduate school experiences to provide recommendations to improve advanced STEM degree completion rates for Black females. The study concludes with implications for future study so that researchers can add to the dearth of literature that exists on this topic and contribute to closing the gap on underrepresented resources needed for current high technology job demands.

Camargo, Adriano Costa de. "Hurdles and potentials in value-added use of peanut and grape by-products as sources of phenolic compounds." Universidade de São Paulo, 2016. http://www.teses.usp.br/teses/disponiveis/11/11141/tde-09112016-171820/.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent studies have demonstrated that peanut and grape processing by-products may be richer sources of bioactive compounds as compared to their original raw material and feedstock; however, before their application as a source of nutraceuticals or in the prevention of lipid oxidation in food systems, certain technological challenges have to be addressed. This study discusses recent advances in the application of plant food processing by-products as sources of phenolic compounds with special emphasis on the profiling and screening of phenolics using high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, their potential health benefits, and microbiologial safety. The major findings are summarized in chapters 2, 3, and 4. The first chapter deals with phenolics from grape by-products. In general, insoluble-bound phenolics were more effective in inhibiting copper-induced human LDL-cholesterol oxidation in vitro than free and esterified phenolics. Phenolic extracts from all fractions inhibited peroxyl radical-induced DNA strand breakage. The third chapter brings about the effects of gamma-irradiation on the microbial growth, phenolic composition, and antioxidant properties of peanut skin. Gamma-irradiation at 5.0 kGy decreased the microbiological count of the product. Total phenolic and proanthocyanidin contents, ABTS radical cation, DPPH radical, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radical scavenging capacities as well as the reducing power of the sample were increased upon gamma-irradiation in both the free and insoluble-bound phenolic fractions. The bioactivity of the free phenolics against in vitro human LDL-cholesterol oxidation and copper induced DNA strand breakage was improved upon gamma-irradiation. Phenolic compounds were positively or tentatively identified and their distribution was in the decreasing order of free > esterified > insoluble-bound forms. Procyanidin dimer A was increased in all phenolic fractions, whereas procyanidin dimer B decreased. Gamma-irradiation induced changes may be explained by molecular conversion, depolymerization, and cross-linking. In the fourth chapter, the ability of selected enzymes in improving the extraction of insoluble-bound phenolics from the starting material (experiment I) or the residues containing insoluble-bound phenolics (experiment II) were evaluated. Pronase and Viscozyme improved the extraction of insoluble-bound phenolics. Viscozyme released higher amounts of gallic acid, catechin, and prodelphinidin dimer A compared to Pronase treatment. Furthermore, p-coumaric and caffeic acids, as well as procyanidin dimer B, were extracted with Viscozyme but not with Pronase treatment. Solubility plays an important role in the bioavailability of phenolic compounds, hence this study may assist in better exploitation of phenolics from winemaking by-products as functional food ingredients or supplements.
A irradiação gama (5,0 kGy) diminuiu a contagem microbiana do produto.

Abstract:
In 2014 Russia took control over Crimea, and significant numbers of Ukrainian investors pursued investment claims against Russia regarding investments in Crimea made prior to the annexation. Thus, a fundamental concern is the applicability of the Ukraine-Russia BIT to such investments. The BIT empowers Ukrainian investors to initiate arbitration for compensation if Russia expropriates any Ukrainian investments on its territory. In order for the investors’ capital in Crimea to qualify as “investments” under the BIT, the tribunals had to determine whether Crimea constituted a part of the Russian “territory”. Even though Crimea was de facto controlled byRussia, de jure the Russian sovereignty over it had been questioned. As of time of the Thesis at least 10 cases were initiated and in seven of which decisions on responsibility and compensation were made. Investors are now enforcing the decisions in different jurisdictions facing jurisdictional challenges from Russia`s side. In 2019, Russia changed the strategy deciding to actively participate in the cases, which may play a decisive role on further developments of the disputes. The paper will examine whether investment tribunals in the Crimean cases have authority to hear them and the award to stand during set-aside/enforcement proceedings from the perspective of different enforcing jurisdictions, as well various litigation tactics and strategies presented by Russia.

Al-Kutby, Sahar. "Applications of spice extracts and other hurdles to improve microbial safety and shelf-life of cooked, high fat meat products (doner kebab)." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/1184.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a growing demand for safe and convenient meat products. The effect of natural spice extracts incorporated with other hurdles for controlling pathogenic bacteria and extending the shelf life of RTE doner kebab were investigated. A comprehensive literature review was undertaken to establish the status of microbial risk, use of additives, knowledge on oxidative deterioration and HACCP associated with meat products. The in vitro antioxidant and antibacterial activities of spice extracts were screened and compared. Cinnamon, clove, and sumac alcoholic extracts demonstrated strong antimicrobial effect, however, rosemary proved effective as antioxidant in a lamb fat model. An accelerated shelf life study on a model system indicated that storage temperature was the most critical factor affecting lipid oxidation, which was effectively delayed by vacuum packaging and rosemary extracts. The effects of spice extracts, packaging and storage time on physiochemical, microbiological, and sensory attributes of doner kebab were evaluated. Application of rosemary and cinnamon extracts significantly reduced TVC, inhibited LAB, and retarded lipid oxidation rate. Sensory evaluation by a consumer panel indicated that only taste and spiciness perception was significantly different between treatments. A challenge test against Listeria monocytogenes showed significant differences between control and spice treatments at day 28. Strong inhibitory effects were associated to high levels of cinnamon particularly when applied after cooking. The effect of heat treatment and sumac (Rhus coriaria) on Bacillus cereus and Clostridium perfringens inactivation was evaluated on a doner kebab prototype. Addition of sumac significantly reduced D-values and z-values for both organisms in comparison to the control. The investigation of the effect of spice extracts, and environmental conditions on changes in growth kinetic parameters for L. monocytogenes and Salmonella Typhimurium showed that spice extracts are highly significant. For both microorganisms, Mumax was reduced as salt and spice concentrations increased, and pH levels decreased. This study shows that spice extracts incorporated with other hurdles can help to maintain safe and good quality RTE doner kebab.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Research surrounding the steeplechase is scarce, with most research focusing primarily on how biomechanical factors relate to maintaining running speed while crossing barriers. One area that has not been well explored is the relationship between biomechanical factors and hurdling economy. The purpose of this study was to investigate how performance times and biomechanical variables relate to hurdling economy during the steeplechase. This was accomplished by measuring running economy of collegiate and professional steeplechasers while running with and without hurdles. Biomechanical measures of approach velocity, take-off distance, clearance height, and lead knee extension while hurdling, as well as steeplechase performance times were correlated to a ratio of running economy with and without hurdles. Results indicated no correlation between steeplechase performance time and the ratio of running economy during the hurdle and non-hurdle laps. Results also indicated no correlation between the aforementioned biomechanical variables and ratio of running economy during the hurdle and non-hurdle laps. Increasing approach velocity did not negatively affect running economy. Steeplechasers may continue to increase approach velocity without hurting their economy or performance times.

Abstract:

Many organizations face challenges that impact their effectiveness and therefore success. These challenges are not easy to visualize, thus making it more difficult to derive and implement appropriate measures to deal with them. The problem becomes compounded when procedures or treatments are applied without diagnosis. The establishment of United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) to serve Africa's unique security concerns generated some reservations both within and outside the United States (U.S.). Despite attempts to communicate AFRICOM's intentions, the lukewarm acceptance among its stakeholders still persists and has raised concerns about its efficacy as a panacea for the problems on the African continent. The basic premise of this study is to diagnose AFRICOM's internal processes and examine its external environment in order to identify any organizational or environmental variables that support or hinder its effectiveness in attaining its goals. This thesis examines the extent to which key variables, such as mission, tasks, structure, culture, and environment are congruent or incongruent. Data was obtained both qualitatively and quantitatively. This study establishes that there is some degree of misalignment among the inputs, outputs, and the desired outcomes of AFRICOM's programs, and proffers recommendations for a better fit.

Van, Harte MA. "Development of regional reliability hurdle rate for South Africa." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/5094.

Full text
Abstract:
The reform of the electricity distribution industry has resulted in the national regulator authorities moving from Rate of Return (ROR) to Incentive Based Regulation (IBR) quality regulation mechanism. This has influenced the reporting, planning, design, operating and maintenance (O&M) philosophy surrounding distribution networks and service delivery to the end customer. The introduction of IBR regulation has created a need to understand how the IBR scheme implemented will influence the capital and operating investment decisions. The aim of the work leading up to this thesis has been to develop reliability hurdle rates that include the effect of the IBR scheme implemented by the national regulator authority of South Africa. This will enable the network planner to compare the investment decision with the reward / penalty scheme. The thesis addresses the challenges facing distribution network planning to achieve the appropriate (optimal) balance of investment cost vs. reliability levels. Value Based Reliability Planning (VBRP) methodology is an approach to evaluate capital investment decisions by quantifying, in economic terms, the benefits of improving reliability (System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) per capital cost required) by comparing different reliability improvement alternatives. This is achieved by relating the investment decision to the reward / penalty scheme introduced by National Electricity Regulator for South Africa (NERSA). To reach this goal this thesis derived a reliability hurdle rate by utilising benefit-to-cost analysis principles by considering the shape of the reward / penalty scheme. Furthermore, this necessitates the determination of the optimal balance between investment decisions to obtain improvement in the continuity of supply indices. One of the fundamental objectives is therefore to relate the IBR and VBRP in an efficient and effective way, that is the aim of the national regulator authority. A new method to determine a regional and national reliability hurdle rate is proposed by the thesis. This is a first step in obtaining an optimal expansion alternative and allows the planner to compare the preferred alternative selected against a hurdle rate. Since the method considers the reward / penalty scheme, the thesis first reviews the principles that influence the quality regulation mechanisms and the benefit-to-cost analysis techniques. The second step demonstrates the derivation of the reliability hurdle rate utilising the reward / penalty scheme adopted within South Africa. Parameters considered include the number of customers and the interruption indices in each region. The application studies demonstrate the derivation of the regional reliability hurdle rate from the six regions within South Africa. This allows the derivation of regional reliability hurdle rate from the different regional reward / penalty schemes. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is performed to understand the influence of different parameters, which will influence the regional reliability hurdle rate. The results from the case studies show that, when NERSA creates the reward / penalty scheme, it is crucial that the approved method is applied to determine the shape of the scheme implemented, which will allow the derivation of the reliability hurdle rate. The new method is suitable for implementation where the IBR quality regulation mechanism has been adopted by the national electricity authorities. Furthermore, the reliability hurdle rate derived can be used to compare the investment decision against the improvement required in the continuity of supply indices. This ensures the trade-off between the expansion investment and improvement in the reliability levels

Abstract:
Household consumption of microcomputers grew up fast in recent years. Despite some socioeconomic groups take highercomputer consumption, consumption is increasing in all groups. In other words, even with large differences, the consumption of computers is no longer uniqueness of wealthier, better educated or at certain regions of the country. Probit and double-hurdle models were suitable for analyzing the consume of computers in Brazil. The Probit model adjusted well the data set in the analysis of the presence of a computer at home. For the computer spending the double-hurdle model proved better than Tobit because separates the analysis of the purchase decision process in two, separating the decision to spend from the decision of how much spend.

Abstract:
In the sport of track and field, proper hurdling technique is a complicated combination of various running and jumping kinematics. With most research having been done on sprint hurdling, there is a growing need for research on hurdling events of different lengths. The intermediate hurdles (IH) and the steeplechase (SC) are two events where there are a number of differences in hurdling technique. This study compared the differences in hurdling technique between events (IH and SC) as well as the differences in technique between genders. Subjects for this study consisted of 20 elite intermediate hurdlers (10 male, 10 female) and 20 elite steeplechasers (10 male, 10 female). Subjects were filmed performing their respective events at the 2006 USA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. A 2-D analysis was performed on each subject to determine differences between events and genders for the following variables: loss of horizontal velocity, peak center of mass relative to hurdle height, horizontal position at peak center of mass, deviation angle at takeoff, hurdle step length, penultimate, and recovery step lengths, takeoff and landing distance, minimum lead leg hip angle, trail leg knee height relative to the hip at peak height, trunk angle at peak height, landing angle, and finally, the ratio of the recovery step to the penultimate step. Significant differences (p < .05) were observed in 11 of the 13 variables analyzed. Steeplechasers showed significantly higher values than hurdlers in deviation angle, landing angle, minimum lead leg hip angle, peak height over the barrier, takeoff and landing distances, as well as penultimate, hurdle and recovery step lengths. Trail leg knee height was shown to be higher for hurdlers. Also, female steeplechasers were shown to have a greater trunk angle and loss of horizontal velocity than female hurdlers. Females showed higher values than males in deviation angle, landing angle, minimum lead leg hip angle, and peak height over the barrier. Landing distance, hurdle step length and trail leg knee height were higher for males. Also, female steeplechasers had a longer penultimate step length than males. Several differences in hurdling technique exist between events and gender. Hurdlers appear to place more emphasis on the kinematics which helps to promote a low center of mass hurdle clearance. Steeplechasers, on the other hand, are less pronounced with their hurdling kinematics. This is likely due to the greater economy required of the longer event. Gender differences appear to be, in large part, a function of differences in barrier height. As athletes and coaches go about evaluating and training hurdling technique, it is important to recognize the differences that exist between these different events.

Abstract:
According to the 2003 National Household Survey, mean labour income for an indigenous worker is only 56% of that for a non-indigenous worker. Studies of ethnic discrimination in Peru’s labour markets generally find that discrimination is too low to explain inequalities of this magnitude. However, Sigma Theory (Figueroa 2003) predicts that social exclusion is a source of inter-ethnic inequality, and that has not been empirically tested. The primary aim of this paper is to fill this gap by estimating the extent to which exclusion and discrimination contribute to income inequality. Hurdle models are used to tackle down econometric endogeneity of years of schooling and truncation-at-zero of incomes. The results imply that exclusion plays a stronger role on inequality than discrimination: without exclusion, the Gini of labour income would decrease from 0.64 to 0.45, and without discrimination it would be reduced to 0.50.

Abstract:
Recently, the United Nations announced that the annual average concentration of atmospheric carbon would pass 400 ppm and scientists warned that catastrophic climate change would soon be unavoidable. Three facets to addressing climate change exist: lessening impacts through greenhouse gas reduction, adapting to impacts that cannot be avoided and improving capacity by developing sustainably. Experts argue that fostering climate-resilient development pathways integrate all three facets thereby providing the strongest response through a triple-win. Yet, typically each aspect has been treated as a distinct response and studied separately. As such, insufficient research exists about the process of building resilience and the possible interactions between each of the facets. This research examined Ukraine’s agri-food sector to begin to fill this large gap in understanding how to build climate-resilience. A case study approach works best when aiming to understand context-dependent processes such as development pathways. Systems methodology provided a framework for understanding possible interactions. All three facets of addressing climate change were integrated into a single process by modifying the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework (SLF) to include planned adaptation and mitigation. The SLF was then used to create a semi-structured plan for interviewing farmers and stakeholders. An iterative participant-driven approach including grounded theory and Q method allowed for multiple perspectives to be considered and allowed for exploration of an under researched topic. The research finding revealed that factors such as corruption, land tenancy, trust and a perceived inability to work together function as barriers to building resilience. Moreover, learning from both international and domestic projects helped to build resilience. The development of agricultural cooperatives within Ukraine has the potential to create a cycle of improved social networks and learning, thereby enhancing climate-resilience. These findings complement other studies that highlight the importance of addressing non-climate issues in order to foster climate-resilience.

Abstract:
Background: The abdominal muscles are vital in providing core stability for proper function in most activities. There is a correlation between side asymmetry of theses muscles and dysfunction. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare trunk muscle morphology and trunk rotational strength between sprinters, a symmetrical sport and sprint hurdlers, an asymmetrical sport. Methods: Twenty-one trained collegiate sprinters and sprint hurdlers were recruited for the study (12 M, 9 F), average age (years) 20.2   1.5, height (cm) 176.9   9.1, and weight (kg) 70.6   9.8. Using real-time ultrasound, panoramic images of the internal oblique (IO) and external oblique (EO) were obtained at rest and contracted in a seated position for both right and left sides of the trunk. Results: Average trunk rotation strength to the right was greater among all participants, p < 0.001. The IO had greater thickness changes than EO for all participants. The IO side asymmetry was significantly different between groups p < 0.01. Conclusion: Sprinters, although involved in a seemingly symmetrical sport, exhibit asymmetrical trunk morphology and rotational strength, while hurdlers, involved in a unilaterally demanding sport, exhibit the expected asymmetry in muscle morphology and trunk rotational strength.

Sahmurat, Fatma. "Hurdle Technologies Using Essential Oils And High Hydrostatic Pressure To Inactivate E. Coli In Fresh Beef." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/83442.

Abstract:
In this study, potential of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) and essential oils (EOs) as natural antimicrobials was evaluated to produce E. coli safe and quality beef product. First, the individual and combined effects of antimicrobial activity (minimum inhibitory concentration) of basil, black cumin, cilantro, cumin, fenugreek, ginger, oregano, black pepper, rosemary, thyme, turmeric oil emulsions on E. coli ATCC 25922 with and without HHP treatment were evaluated. Cumin, oregano and thyme EOs showed highest antimicrobial activity against E. coli ATCC 25922. The synergy of selected EOs against E. coli ATCC 25922 was determined using the checkerboard method to obtain fractional inhibitory concentration index. Although their combinations did not show synergy, they expressed synergy when combined with HHP (400 MPa, 10 min, 20 °C) and the best combination was cumin and oregano EOs with HHP. Effects of HHP and EO combinations on inactivation of E. coli ATCC 25922 in beef were investigated using response surface methodology (RSM). Statistical analysis showed the model was significant for predicting log reduction with high accuracy. The significant model terms were pressure and time. Compared to control, HHP/EO treated samples showed no-post growth when stored up to 120 days at 4°C. Presented results suggests that the combination of HHP and antimicrobials has not only improved the process parameters (lowered pressure, time, and EO concentration) but also prevented recovery of E. coli ATCC 25922 during storage. RSM was employed to analyze the synergistic effects of HHP and EOs on beef quality (color, texture and lipid oxidation). Color indices were significantly affected by pressure, time and their interactions. Above 400 MPa the discoloration was similar to cooked beef and EO addition did not help color improvement. However, EOs showed significant antioxidant activity on both treated and untreated samples during storage. In conclusion, there is a great potential of HHP and EO combinations to enhance pathogen inactivation while keeping the quality of beef. Moreover, presence of EOs can prolong the shelf life of pressure treated beef. Therefore, the combination of HHP and EO is very promising for meat industry.

Oka, Anand. "Towards vaulting the hurdle of short lifetimes in wireless sensor networks : distributed algorithms and UWB impulse radio." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/11080.

Full text
Abstract:
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) offer a compelling solution for distributed sensing problems because they can be deployed rapidly and inexpensively, and are robust to failures. However, since they operate on batteries, they tend to have short lifetimes. We present several algorithmic techniques for reducing the power consumption of such networks, based on Algorithmic Data Reduction (ADR) and low-power Ultra-Wide-Band Impulse Radio (UWB-IR). In the ADR approach, we minimize power-hungry communication out of the network via distributed in-situ broadcast `message-passing' algorithms for filtering, compression and model identification. These algorithms are scalable, power-efficient, stable, and computationally tractable. At the same time their performance is close to the respective ultimate theoretical limits. Specifically, the filter performs close to an optimal Bayesian recursion, the compressor approaches the rate-distortion and channel-capacity bound, and the identification scheme is asymptotically efficient in the Cramer-Rao sense. The UWB-IR approach exploits a well-known tradeoff predicted by Shannon theory, namely that one can maintain reliable communication at a given data rate at a reduced transmit power provided the transmission bandwidth is requisitely increased. We propose a novel UWB-IR receiver, which is eminently suited to the bursty mode of operation of the WSN physical layer. The receiver is based on the principle of Compressed Sensing and offers a practical alternative to costly high-rate analog-to-digital conversion. It can tolerate strong inter-symbol interference and can therefore operate at high pulsing rates, which allows us to fully leverage the power-vs-bandwidth tradeoff. It is impervious to poor timing synchronization, which means that the transmitter can avoid sending training headers, thus further saving a significant amount of power. In addition, it is also robust to strong narrow-band interference from licensed systems like WiMAX. With a synergy of the ADR and UWB-IR techniques, the communication related power consumption of the WSN can be reduced by about 30 dB or more in practical scenarios, which substantially alleviates the handicap of limited lifetimes. We study a practical application of these techniques in the problem of target tracking by interpreting the received signal strength of transmissions from RFID tags.

Hornung, Mareike. "Heuristic reasoning in the setting of hurdle rates and in the projection of cash flows in investment appraisal." Thesis, University of the West of England, Bristol, 2017. http://eprints.uwe.ac.uk/29685/.

Full text
Abstract:
A growing body of literature in investment appraisal has focused on bounded rationality of managerial decision-makers. It mostly addresses the actual investment decision stage, i.e. project approval. The investment decision is usually supported by a financial appraisal of the investment projects under consideration. Bounded rationality of the decision-makers determining the parameters of a financial appraisal have, however, attracted little attention. In the field of judgement and decision-making, decision-makers have been found to rely on a variety of effort-reducing strategies, i.e. heuristics, when making a judgement. This work addresses heuristic reasoning in the narrow field of setting the parameters required for a discounted cash flow analysis. Both dimensions, the projection of cash flows and the setting of a risk-adjusted hurdle rate, have been found to incorporate a high degree of subjective judgement. Moreover, given the complex and uncertain environment of companies and of the investment context in particular, optimal parameters may be difficult to determine. This work identifies heuristics that actors involved in this narrow stage of investment appraisal intuitively apply. It proceeds in two steps. First, and based on a conceptual framework, a qualitative study of practitioners detects and classifies indications of judgement in the projection of cash flows and in the setting of a hurdle rate. The findings that are indicative of heuristics translate into hypotheses for a second, quantitative study: Five experiments on practitioner-proxies are used to examine heuristic reasoning in the narrow contexts of investment appraisal. We find evidence that the affect heuristic and the anchoring effect substitute the more difficult judgement of a project’s risk that is manifested in a project-specific hurdle rate. Our hypothesis that the availability heuristic may also be involved in judging project risk cannot be confirmed; it is not found to contribute to an explanation of the paradox of setting hurdle rates higher than appropriate. As regards the projection of cash flows, application of the representativeness heuristic was not found to be applicable – despite strong indications in the qualitative study. Strong evidence is found in favour of the anchoring effect in making cash flow estimates – with finance or accounting experts being particularly prone to rely on arbitrary anchors. A sixth experiment investigates the practice of adjusting hurdle rates to mitigate the risk of overconfident cash flow projections. This work therefore contributes to an enhanced understanding of the role of judgement and the underlying judgemental processes in the two dimensions of investment appraisal. It highlights boundedly rational behaviour of the actors involved in the vital process of investment decision-making which has not been systematically addressed elsewhere. It can contribute to an improved understanding of organisational behaviour and ultimately to corporate success.

Abstract:
The classical Poisson, geometric and negative binomial regression models for count data belong to the family of generalized linear models and are available at the core of the statistics toolbox in the R system for statistical computing. After reviewing the conceptual and computational features of these methods, a new implementation of hurdle and zero-inflated regression models in the functions hurdle() and zeroinfl() from the package pscl is introduced. It re-uses design and functionality of the basic R functions just as the underlying conceptual tools extend the classical models. Both hurdle and zero-inflated model, are able to incorporate over-dispersion and excess zeros-two problems that typically occur in count data sets in economics and the social sciences-better than their classical counterparts. Using cross-section data on the demand for medical care, it is illustrated how the classical as well as the zero-augmented models can be fitted, inspected and tested in practice. (authors' abstract)

100M hurdles is a sport which consists of speed and strength. It is characterized by short-working time, high intensity, coordination, and high skills. In order to achieve higher performance, speed, strength, endurance, agility, coordination, flexibility, and rhythm, as well as contention, attention, and stable self control are needed. 100M hurdle training is the initial stage of hurdle training for the Juveniles. In order to establish a good foundation of hurdling skills, training methods, as well as the amount of training specifically designed for the physical and mental conditions of juveniles should all be concerned. With materials collected from home and abroad related to hurdle training, along with consideration of developmental characteristics of the teen-agers, and with scientifically-based theories combined with the author’s experience for teaching, coaching and competing in hurdle event. The purposes of this book are to provide domestic coaches and athletes deeper understandings, to upgrade the competitive standard. Hopefully, This book can attract more attention on this field. This volume is divided into seven chapters as following: Chapter Ⅰ:Introduction. Describe the hurdle’s historical development. Discuss the curriculum, teaching, and coaching in hurdling for juveniles at schools. Chapter Ⅱ:Research and coaching techniques. Discuss the skill structure and training methods of 100M hurdles to find out what are proper training model for teen-agers. Chapter Ⅲ:Research and training of event-specific quality in 100M hurdles. Introduce the principle and methods of event-specific quality, in order to arrange proper training course for the development of the juveniles. Chapter Ⅳ:The training program of 100M hurdles. Describe the basic components, type of training program. A practical example is also included. Chapter Ⅴ:Mental training of 100M hurdles. Analysis the mental qualities of 100M hurdle athletes. Discuss the methods of the mental training. A recompetition mental training example is also included. Chapter Ⅵ:Health management of 100M hurdlers. Introduce the Concept and importance of health management. Discuss the theories fatigue and recovery, prevention of sports injury, and nutritional requirement and diet of the juvenile hurdlers. Chapter Ⅶ:Scientific selection for 100M hurdle athletes. Based on the theories of science to discuss the methods and procedures of selection.
