Ce travail qui est une recherche qualitative sur l'ethnicité au Rwanda nous a montré que les critères d'autodéfinition, d'auto-attribution ou d'attribution par les autres à une catégorie ethnique ainsi que la dichotomisation « nous » versus « eux » font que les Hutu, les Twa et les Tutsi sont groupes ethniques distincts malgré la communauté de culture et d'espace géographique.
La recherche nous a montré ensuite que les drames répétitifs (pogromes, exils, génocide) qui ont endeuillé le peuple rwandais pendant plusieurs décennies ne sont pas dus à une haine atavique ou viscérale entre les Hutu et les Tutsi mais à une idéologie raciste dont les origines remontent aux temps de la colonisation.
La recherche nous a montré enfin que le problème ethnique se pose chaque fois que le pouvoir monopolisé par une poignée de politiciens (Hutu ou Tutsi suivant les époques), commence à être mis en cause.
In this work I use qualitative documentary research to explore the problem of ethnicity in Rwanda. I find out that self-definition, self-attribution, and attribution by others, as well as the dichotomization of “us versus them” are sufficient criteria f categorize the Hutus, Tutsis, and Twas as distinct ethnic groups in spite of the community of culture (language, custom, and religion) and of geographic space.My research also shows that the continual conflicts (pogroms, exile, and genocide) that have plagued Rwandan people for several decades are not due to an atavistic or visceral hatred between Hutus and Tutsis, but rather the result of a racist ideology whose roots lie deep in the colonial period.
This work has allowed me to confirm the thesis of my research, that the “problem of ethnicity in Rwanda is stoked by an elite (whether Tutsi or Hutu depending on the era) who set their sights on seizing and maintaining power”.

D’abord « Indiens » pour leurs « découvreurs », « peuple de la Bible » pour les missionnaires qui les alphabétisèrent, et « sauvages » pour les écrivains exotiques, les Polynésiens voulurent enfin revendiquer leur propre identité quand la France installa le Centre d’Expérimentation du Pacifique et que les premiers essais nucléaires commencèrent à Moruroa en 1966. Ils se voulurent alors Ma’ohi tumu, autochtones bien ancrés dans le sol de leurs îles. Ils revendiquèrent, pour résister à l’agression, une identité ancienne qui leur permettait de renouer fièrement avec un passé et des traditions qu’ils avaient oubliés. Les premiers écrivains polynésiens se joignirent naturellement à ce mouvement de renouveau identitaire et célébrèrent, avec les autres militants, l’oralité et la terre de leurs ancêtres. Les femmes qui avaient eu assez peu la parole jusqu’alors trouvèrent dans la littérature le moyen de faire enfin entendre leur voix. La littérature, essentiellement féminine, remit peu à peu en cause un modèle identitaire qui privilégiait les valeurs masculines. Les écrivaines participent aujourd’hui à la construction d’une identité polynésienne qui prend en compte les individus et s’ouvre davantage à l’Autre<br>First referred to as “Indians” by those who “discovered” them, then as “the People of the Bible” by the missionaries who taught them how to read and write and at last as “savages” by exotic writers, Polynesians finally decided to assert their identity as the C.E.P. (nuclear testing center) was set up by France and as tests started in Moruroa in1966. They began to think of themselves as Ma’ohi tumu, that is to say natives solidly rooted in the ground of their islands. In order to resist aggression, they proclaimed an old identity which enabled them to revive traditions as well as a past which they had forgotten about. The first Polynesian writers naturally joined in this identity revival and celebrated, along with other activists, oral tradition together with the land of their ancestors. Women, who up to then had not really been entitled to make their voices heard, found a way to do so through writing. Literature, mainly female, gradually challenged an identity model which foregrounded male values. Nowadays, female writers are taking part into the making of a Polynesian identity which takes individuals into account and is opening up to the Other

The majority of empirical literature on refugee identity and homeland attachment focuses on single exile trajectories: one migratory movement out of the homeland and possibly repatriation. It largely neglects more complex experiences of exile and their implications. Double-exile, a second fleeing of one’s homeland after repatriation, adds complexity to our conventional understanding of refugee perceptions of home and identity. This study explores double-exile experiences of the Rwandan Hutu refugee population of Dzaleka refugee camp to examine its impacts on notions of home and identity construction. This ethnographic study found that the Rwandan Hutu refugees have a unique relationship to home and identity. Double-exile ended their sense of belonging to Rwandan society. Thus causing a break in the conventional longing for home and deterritorializing their identity. These impacts are apparent through the juxtaposition of study participants’ notions of home and their experiences of return and double-exile, a lack of connection or desire to return to Rwanda, and an absence of pride in their Rwandan identity and cultural practices. These findings suggest that more importance must be placed on the role of pre-flight experience of refugees as an integral element to their construction of notions of home. It also indicates that, contrary to more conventional exile trajectories where refugee identity is derived from a historical consciousness, double-exile refugees construct identity through a present-focus.

This thesis describes the perceptions of the Hutu/Tutsi communities in Bujumbura on the origin of ethnic conflicts in Burundi. With the use of a qualitative research method, this thesis describes the history and origin of ethnicity and ethnic identity between the Hutu and the Tutsi. Focusing on the case study approach, both secondary and primary research methods are used in the process of data sources with emphasis on the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial eras of the country. The thesis findings show that ethnicity in Burundi has changed over the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial eras. The ethnic structures in Burundi changed from that of togetherness in the pre-colonial period to that of hatred in both the colonial and post-colonial eras. The way forward for Burundi is to change the governance structures in the country so as to dismantle the colonial structures and shift back to the traditional pre-colonial structures.

Mais l'intervention de l'ONU et l'envoi des casques bleus qui survient après la signature des Accords d'Arusha de 1993 afin d'accompagner lesdits accords, n'arrête cependant pas la montée des violences et de l'extrémisme Hutu. Les différentes résolutions du Conseil de sécurité, loin d'accorder plus de pouvoir aux casques bleus, créent au contraire une situation d'immobilisme général, favorisant au printemps 1994 la reprise des combats et le génocide des Tutsi et des Hutu modérés. Le drame humanitaire que connaît le Rwanda pendant et après les affrontements et les massacres, nous interpelle sur le véritable rôle des Nations Unies dans la gestion de ce conflit, et plus généralement dans le monde de l'après guerre froide<br>Before the outbreak of hostilities between the RPF and the FAR in 1990, the United Nations became directly involved after both parties asked it to arbitrate the conflict. But the intervention of the UN and the deployment of peacekeepers that came after the agreement of Arusha in 1993 in order to accompany the agreements did not stop violence and the rise of Hutu extremism yet. The various resolutions of the UN Security Council, far from granting more power to peacekeepers, instead created a situation of stagnation favoring the resumption of fights in 1994 and the genocide of Tutsi and moderate Hutu. The humanitarian tragedy facing Rwanda during and after the clashes and massacres appeals us on the proper role of the United Nations in the management of this conflict in particular, and in the post-cold war world in general

Depuis 1994, cette province en subit les répercussions dans une région où les rivalités communautaires étaient déjà très tendues. En effet, cette région est devenue un condensé de géopolitique régionale où tous les acteurs de la crise sont des héritiers du génocide rwandais. Son étude géopolitique, avec une recherche particulière portée sur le Petit-Nord qui s'étend principalement de 1990 à 2007, permet d‟analyser une période au cours de laquelle les conflits locaux se sont à la fois aggravés et nationalisés jusqu'à se transcender au niveau régional avec l'implication des acteurs étrangers nationaux. L‟instabilité perpétuelle du Nord-Kivu relève de causes multifactorielles où la richesse de son sous-sol combiné par la demande mondiale de matières premières minérales explique la relation de causalité entre l'exploitation illicite des ressources minières et la perpétuation de la guerre, à savoir que la guerre est la continuation de l'économie par d'autres moyens. Elle est également marquée par l'inexistence voire l‟inconsistance de l'État congolais, la densité démographique extrêmement forte de cette région, la porosité des frontières coloniales, l'exacerbation des tensions ethniques et foncières et la profusion de milices armées face à des Nations Unies impuissantes. The causes of perpetual instability in North Kivu are multifaceted – the riches in its subsoil combined with world demand for mineral raw materials explains the causal relationship between the unlawful exploitation of mining resources and continued warfare, namely that war is a continuation of the economy by other means. It has also been marked by the non-existence or even inconsistency of the Congo State, the extremely high density of population in this region, porous colonial frontiers, the exacerbation of ethnic tension and the pressure of land scarcity and the profusion of armed militia opposing a powerless United Nations. But the regional aims of Rwanda remain central to the instability in North Kivu. Kigali has been able to fully take advantage of and exploit the guilt of the international community for not reacting at the time of the genocide. This feeling of impunity due to “credit for the genocide” is notably made possible by the goodwill of the international community and support from the “friends of the New Rwanda”, starting with the United States. Rwanda has always claimed a threat from ex-FAR troops and Interahamwe militia to justify its direct or indirect presence in the field. Nonetheless, the FDLR (Forces for the Democratic Liberation of Rwanda) nowadays seem far from representing an actual threat to Rwanda but still remain an easy pretext to justify the interference of their troops in North Kivu. The direct consequence of permanent destabilisation of the province is ultimately the establishment of a form of “shared sovereignty” that has given Rwanda the possibility – directly up to 2002 and then indirectly up to the present time – to take full advantage of the “slice of the pie” represented by this territory

This diploma thesis deals with the post-conflict development in Rwanda and its main aim is to evaluate the tools adopted after the genocide in 1994 for the purpose of preventing recurrence of any similar conflict in the future. The thesis mostly concentrates on the process of justice (on the international, national and local level) and on the process of reconciliation of the polarized society in Rwanda as two key components of the post-conflict reconstruction. On the basis of the results derived from the detailed analysis of the tools from security, social, economic and political area, the thesis answers the asked question if the future conflict in Rwanda is nowadays hardly probable (thanks to effective and successful activity of the adopted measures) or if there is, on the contrary, some ethnic tension in Rwanda which could become the reason for repeating of any wave of violence in short- or medium-term.

Ethnic discrimination has deep roots in Rwanda. For many dozens of years, Tutsis have been marked down as those whose task it is to rule the country and Hutus have been treated as those who have to submit to it. As time moved on, Hutu hatred had been growing steadily and resulted in coup d'état in 1959 and consequent persecutions of Tutsis. However, hidden grudge lingered on. The pretext for its revival was the RPF incursion into the country at the beginning of nineties. The invasion also became one of the major preconditions of the fastest genocide in history. This thesis aims to pinpoint actors with direct and also indirect influence, to specify their motives, to assess implications of their decisions and on the grounds of this all to divide them into groups of perpetrators, bystanders and rescuers. The identification of psychological aspects of Hutu perpetrators was made with intent to analyse the process of Us-Them thinking with its typical features and consequences and the process of dehumanization with particular emphasis on its linguistic forms. In connection with that, this thesis points out crucial importance of Rwandan media of hate which determined anti-Tutsi propaganda to a considerable extent.

Previous studies have shown that Western media often show the wrong picture of what happened during the genocide in Rwanda 1994. What is described in the news reporting is explained as a new civil war between the two different ethnic groups hutu and tutsi. The hate between these ethnic groups is described as an age-old hate that continually inflates to battles between these two different ethnic groups. The genocide witnessed by the entire international community and received no direct help from the outside world. The UN allowed people to kill each other with machetes, shoot each other and brutally and cold blooded murder others because they belong to the wrong ethnic group. Going into the UN's actions is very interesting and something I am thinking of doing in the future, but this essay focuses on two different issues: how was the genocide in Rwanda portrayed by Western media and did the Western image reflects the domestic image of the Rwanda genocide? The result is that Western media initially showed the wrong picture of what preceded in Rwanda. But when the newspapers sent their own cross-ministers, the conflict and the various players in the conflict were clarified.

Ce travail s’inscrit dans la perspective d’une analyse sociolinguistique du discours de la RTLM entre octobre 1993 et Juillet 1994. Dans la perspective de la méthode lexicologique et lexico-sémantique, il met en relation des comportements diversifiés repérés au niveau des mots dans leur rapport à l’extra-linguistique, c’est-à-dire au hors-texte social et historico-linguistique. S’appuyant aussi sur la théorie de l’énonciation, il montre la manière dont les journalistes s’impliquent dans le discours. La première tâche a été d’esquisser la configuration sociohistorique pour essayer de dessiner le cadre sociopolitique et socioculturel qui peut avoir été propice à la production du discours de la RTLM que nous nous sommes proposé d’analyser. Dans un deuxième temps, nous avons montré que dans l’usage qu’elle fait des pronoms personnels, la RTLM considère que son message ne concerne qu’elle et les sympathisants de la cause qu’elle défend. Cette logique aboutit à une bipolarisation permanente, où l’on distingue le mauvais FPR face au bon MRND, ce qui débouche sur la diabolisation du FPR, donc des Tutsi qui se trouvent exclus de la communauté rwandaise. Ceci est d’autant vrai que, comme nous l’avons montré dans la troisième et dernière partie, les mots comme pouvoir, démocratie, gouverner, etc. Ne s’inscrivent nullement dans le même champ sémantique que le mot tutsi ou le sigle F. P. R. Auquel il est associé. Identifié comme « ennemi », le Tutsi ne peut s’attendre qu’à être sanctionné. Le discours inocule les germes de la négation de l’autre, lui refusant ainsi toute humanité. La RTLM recourt alors à une image, portée par le verbe travailler, gukora qui, employé dans son sens figuré, porte en lui l’exhortation à tuer les « inyenzi ». Peut-être est-ce là l’objectif essentiel du message de la RTLM<br>This study is sustained by the perspective of a discourse sociolinguistic analysis carried out by RTLM between October 1993 and July 1994. In the context of the lexicological and lexico-semantic method, it brings together diversified behaviour patterns associated with words in the relationship with extra linguistic elements, i. E. With the historical linguistic and social outside –text. It also uses the enunciation theory to find out the journalists’ imprint in the speech. The first task consisted in outlining the sociohistorical configuration in order to try to design both the socio-political and sociocultural framework likely to be conductive to the production of the RTLM discourse that we set out to analyse. Secondly we have shown that in the use to which it puts personal pronouns, RTLM takes it for granted that its message is only meant for itself and people who are sensitive to the cause that it is defending. This logic results in a permanent bipolarisation whereby one distinguishes the bad RPF facing the good MRND, which leads to the demonization of RPF, in other words of the Tutsi who are excluded from the Rwandan community. This is all the truer since, as we have demonstrated in the third and last part, words such as power, democracy, governance, etc. Are not part of the same semantic field as the word Tutsi or the acronym FPR to which it is associated. Identified as the ‘‘enemy’’, the Tutsi person can only expect to be sanctioned. The discourse inoculates the germs of the negation of the other by denying him all humanity. RTLM therefore uses an image sustained by the verb work (gukora) which, when used figuratively, carries within it the urge to kill the ‘‘inyenzi’’. Le génocide des Tutsi du Rwanda est singulier au regard des génocides du XXème siècle. Il l’est par le nombre de ses victimes, par sa rapidité, ses modes d’exécution et surtout par le nombre de ses auteurs. Ce sont plus d’un million de Rwandais (Hutu) qui ont pris part directement aux massacres. La sanction de ces crimes de masse dans une société en quête de reconstruction soulevait d’innombrables difficultés notamment dans l’appréhension d’une criminalité collective en termes de responsabilité individuelle. L’ampleur et le paroxysme atteint dans ce drame a nécessité un traitement spécifique. Trois instances de justice ont été activées de manière concomitante : les juridictions classiques rwandaises (relayées par des juridictions coutumières dites Gacaca), le Tribunal international créé par le Conseil de Sécurité des Nations Unies et enfin les juridictions nationales étrangères en application du principe de la compétence universelle. L’intérêt scientifique de notre démarche réside justement dans l’étude de ce traitement juridictionnel multiniveaux. Deux questions se posent : quelle est la pertinence de ce modèle de justice 20 ans après le drame rwandais ?Quel bilan provisoire peut-on tirer de tous les jugements rendus par ces différentes juridictions ?<br>The Tutsi genocide in Rwanda is singular in consider genocides of the XXth century. It is true by the number of victims, the speed and methods of implementation and, above all the number of the authors. These are more than one million Rwandan (Hutu) who participated directly in the massacres. Punishment of the massive crimes in a society in search of reconstruction, run into problems of group crime and individual responsibility. The scale and the speak of human tragedy needed specific treatment. Rwandan ordinary courts (replace by customary Courts called Gacaca), International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (created by United Nations Security Council) and lastly, national foreign jurisdictions are also begin simultaneously in application of the principle of universal jurisdiction. The interest of our scientific approach lies in the study of multilevel constitutionalism. This raises two obvious questions: What is the relevance of this justice model twenty years after the Rwandan tragedy? What has been the interim review of all the judgments handed down by the different jurisdictions?

Depuis le début des années quatre-vingt, la petite localité de Kibeho - un hameau particulièrement difficile d’accès situé aux confins d’une région rurale du sud-ouest du Rwanda, à environ deux cents kilomètres de Kigali - s’est muée en une destination de pèlerinage prisée par de nombreux Catholiques rwandais et, désormais, étrangers. L’origine de ce changement de nature du lieu se confond avec les apparitions de la Vierge (mais aussi du Christ et d’autres personnages du « panthéon » catholique) dont ont été favorisées plusieurs jeunes filles scolarisées au collège catholique local au début des années quatre-vingt, puis un certain nombre d’adolescents des environs. De spontanés et irréguliers qu’ils étaient dans les premières années du phénomène, encore liés aux performances publiques des voyants qui bénéficiaient des apparitions à heures fixes sur un podium surélevé, les déplacements d’individus se sont graduellement organisés. Aujourd’hui, à Kibeho, les apparitions publiques ont pris fin. Les pèlerins, qu’ils appartiennent à l’un ou l’autre mouvement d’Action catholique ou à un groupe de prière et de pèlerinage né des apparitions, se regroupent dans différents centres urbains du pays pour rejoindre le sanctuaire de Notre-Dame des Douleurs, érigé suite à la reconnaissance des apparitions par l’Eglise catholique en 2001 et en perpétuelle expansion depuis lors. <p>En 2001, la déclaration de reconnaissance mentionne, parmi les signes de crédibilité des apparitions, « la journée du 15 août 1982 qui fut marquée notamment, contre toute attente, par des visions effroyables, qui dans la suite se sont avérées prophétiques au vu des drames humains vécus au Rwanda et dans l’ensemble des pays de notre région des Grands Lacs ». Cette lecture officielle qui confère un horizon de sens aux événements, instituant la prophétie en des termes choisis permettant d’y entrevoir le génocide comme l’hécatombe du choléra dans les camps de réfugiés du Congo, est diversement négociée par les acteurs locaux, même si la conviction de la réalisation d’une prophétie est quasi-unanime. Du point de vue des pèlerins, les apparitions demeurent relativement problématiques. Elles exigent de chacun qu’il négocie sa position en fonction d’une représentation de l’orthodoxie constamment réévaluée dans les limites de ce qui est expérimenté et affirmé comme une identité catholique. Cette difficulté est notamment due à la multiplicité des individus qui ont revendiqué ou revendiquent encore des visions ou apparitions, alors que seules trois jeunes filles ont été reconnues par l’Eglise catholique en 2001. <p>Après avoir soigneusement défini le cadre socio-historique des apparitions rwandaises, en abordant la question depuis le point de vue de voyants non reconnus - dont l’une expatriée en Belgique - et de ceux qui leur sont proches, la thèse propose une analyse des discours par lesquels ceux-ci se définissent et négocient la légitimité de leur pratique religieuse. Une attention particulière a été portée aux outils stéréotypés de la critique (sexualité, politique, vénalité…), mobilisés dans le cadre des tensions et conflits qui opposent différents acteurs individuels et collectifs. Par ailleurs, les mécanismes qui président aux rhétoriques de la construction de soi ont été mis en lumière, notamment par le biais des récits de guerre qui fondent une identité de survivant liée à la conviction d’une intervention mariale. Ce processus se confond souvent avec ceux qui président à la construction du pouvoir de la Vierge, et donc des voyants. Finalement, au travers de l’analyse des représentations touchant notamment à la prophétie du génocide et de la guerre civile, les nouveaux rapports au national se font jour, les violences des années nonante étant intégrées dans un schéma biblique qui opère un basculement significatif :parce que le Rwanda serait touché de plein fouet par la Mal, il a été choisi par Dieu et par la Vierge comme noyau de la Nouvelle Evangélisation. The decision making process of avalanche hazard forecasting was studied during the ski season of 1995 at Mount Hutt. The objective was to derive the main contributing factors of avalanche forecasting and then assess the potential of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a tool to assist with the decision making process. A snow distribution model was developed utilising the contributing factors that were identified. Interviews were conducted with the three principle avalanche forecasters from the Mount Hutt Ski Patrol. Each forecaster was presented with a series of storm scenarios, and then asked what information they wanted to know and when they wanted it, while making their avalanche hazard assessment and forecast. The information requested by each forecaster were very similar. However, there was a distinct difference with how each forecaster interpreted the available information. They often used different approaches when assessing snow stability, but ultimately arrived at the same conclusion about the potential avalanche hazard. The key contributing factors identified in this research were wind speed and direction, snowfall intensity, the amount of new snow, and the surface conditions upon which the new snow was being deposited. A GIS model using Grid was developed to assess the spatial distribution of snow during two storm scenarios. The model appeared to work well, given that it was only designed to assess the potential of GIS. The resulting output of the model would have provided the forecasters with a more accurate estimate of snow distribution. Forecasters have to estimate the spatial distribution of snow and its stability, based on experience and know knowledge. GIS has the potential to provide accurate estimates of this distribution, that could ultimately assist conventional avalanche forecasters.

Au Rwanda, la question des relations interethniques ne s'est politisée qu'à la fin des années 1950, dans le cadre de la modernisation du pays, initiée avec l'adoption du plan décennal de développement en 1951. Les catholiques progressistes, démocrates-chrétiens, dirigeants et militants du Mouvement ouvrier chrétiens belges se sont engagés sur le terrain ou à Bruxelles pour préparer une décolonisation qui préviendrait toute pénétration communiste au Congo. Tous étaient anticolonialistes, antiracistes, pourfendeurs de la barrière des couleurs au Congo, de la ségrégation raciale aux États-Unis et de l'apartheid en Afrique du sud. Néanmoins, nombre d'entre eux ont soutenu de bonne foi les revendications et ensuite le gouvernement raciste de Kayibanda parce qu'ils ont, d'une part, pris pour un phénomène de transformation en classes sociales ce qui était en réalité le processus d'ethnicisation de la société rwandaise, d'autre part, assimilé la monarchie rwandaise à l'apartheid sud-africain. Tout cela, sur fond d'anticommunisme généralisé et d'espoir d'une révolution sociale à l'échelle planétaire. Pour l'occasion, ils se sont objectivement alliés à des officiers belges admirateurs du régime sud-africain et formés à l'école française de la guerre révolutionnaire, dont ils dénonçaient par ailleurs les objectifs et les méthodes en Algérie. Trop focalisés sur l'action de l'Église et des Missions, les chercheurs ont négligé l'influence des scientifiques, économistes, anthropologues et démographes de l'Institut pour la recherche en Afrique centrale (IRSAC) dans la fabrication de l'image falsifiée que les Belges se faisaient de la société rwandaise.

Erich Mayer is not considered as one of South Africa's well-known and significant artists. Regardless of this, South
Africa has inherited a few thousand drawings and watercolour paintings from Mayer that are of incalculable value to
historians and cultural historians. His work has also not been "discovered" and exploited by architectural historians
interested in South African vernacular architecture. Mayer visited various regions in South Africa and made drawings
of the simple vernacular homesteads and other structures he saw on the farms and in the smaller villages and hamlets.
Most of the buildings have now probably disappeared and the drawings are the only evidence of building types that
otherwise could only have survived through oral traditions and legends. The buildings vary from beehive structures
covered with grass mats in the N orth West, "kapsteil" dwellings in N amaqualand, to Bushveld dwellings with gables
and thatched roofs. Mayer also made a contribution to the recording ofthe crude shelters the prisoners of war erected
in the prisoner of war camp on St Helena, where he was sent as prisoner of war during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-
1902). Even though these structures were not erected on South African soil, they reflected the ingenuity and
resourcefulness of the Boers who were imprisoned.

Nowa Huta i Polen är ett område i staden Krakow som uppfördes från grunden mellan 1949–1956.Stadsmiljön har en socialist-realistisk utformning och är representativ för stadsplanering från en tid som kombinerade en snabb industrialisering och en strävan att skapa ett nytt samhälle. Stadens utformning är intressant ur ett samhällsplaneringsperspektiv då den uppvisar många likheter med nyurbanism och Trädgårdsstaden i Ebenezer Howards originaltanke. Genom en undersökande fallstudie utförd genom litteraturanalys kombinerat med analyser av den fysiska stadsmiljön har likheter med nyurbanism och trädgårdsstaden blivit tydliga. En av slutsatserna som kan dras från arbetet är att det saknas belägg för beskrivningen av Nowa Huta som sammanhörande med Clarence Perrys grannskapsmodell<br>Nowa Huta in Poland is an urban environment built from the ground up between 1949 and 1956 on the basis of socialist-realist design. The design is representative of socialist-realist urban planning from a time that combined rapid industrialization with an effort to create a new society. The city's design is interesting from an urban planning perspective as it exhibits many similarities with New urbanism and The Garden City in Ebenezer Howard's original form. Through an exploratory case study conducted through literature analysis combined with an analysis of the physical urban environment, similarities with new urbanism and the garden city emerges. One of the conclusions that can be drawn from the work is that there is no support for the description of Nowa Huta as associated with Clarence Perry's neighborhood model.

This study examines Interim Financial Reporting disclosure compliance and associated factors for listed firms in Asia-Pacific countries: Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Employing disclosure theory (in the context of information economics), with the central premise being that manager' trade-off costs and benefits relating to disclosure, the factors influencing the variation in interim reporting disclosure compliance are examined.
Using researcher-constructed disclosure indices and regression modelling, the results reveal significant cross-country variation in interim reporting disclosure compliance, with higher compliance associated with IFRS adoption, audit review, quarterly reporting (rather than six-monthly) and shorter reporting lags.

Im vorliegenden Beitrag soll diskutiert werden, ob es sich folglich bei der Idee einer Lernwegsteuerung basierend auf konditionalen Freigaben um einen – alten Hut – handelt.
Im Projekt UnIbELT (Übergang Schule - Hochschule mit Unterstützung Internetbasierter E-Learning-Tools) haben von August 2009 bis März 2012 insgesamt 1037 Schüler in 71 Kursdurchläufen an E-Learning-Kursen teilgenommen. Zielstellung des Projektes ist es, die Studierfähigkeit von Schülern der Sekundarstufe II sächsischer Gymnasien durch E-Learning-Angebote stärker auszubilden.
Die durch die hohe Zahl an Kursdurchläufen gewonnenen Erfahrungen erlauben uns ein fundiertes Urteil über die Akzeptanz solcher Angebote. Im Folgenden wird diskutiert, in welchem Maße die Freiheit der Lerner in der Studienvorbereitung im Interesse des Lernerfolgs durch geeignete Führung auf dem Lernweg eingeschränkt werden sollte. Dazu werden insbesondere die technischen und didaktischen Möglichkeiten dieses Vorgehens unter den konkreten Rahmenbedingungen des verwendeten Lernmanagementsystems OPAL betrachtet.
Basierend auf den Erfahrungen aus den Kursdurchläufen (die jeweils mit einem Auswertungsgespräch mit Schülern und Lehrern abgeschlossen wurden ([HS12], S. 7)) und den Evaluierungs- und Weiterentwicklungszyklen der Kurse (vgl. „Richtlinien für Kursersteller“ ([DS11], S. 3)) wird dargestellt, wie die Leistungsüberprüfung und Lernwegsteuerung im Rahmen des Projektes UnIbELT im Kontext von didaktischen Intentionen und technischen Realisierungsmöglichkeiten umgesetzt wurde.

The goal of this study was to undertake a microbial investigation of the Historic Huts areas on Ross Island, to gain knowledge of the fungal biodiversity and biochemical framework, focusing on the wood degrading potential of these fungi at both psychrophilic (cold) and mesophilic (moderate) temperatures. Eight hundred and forty nine samples were collected from three Heroic Era Historic Huts of Antarctica, from a variety of substrates but predominantly structural wood. The huts, Discovery Hut at Hut Point, Terra Nova Hut at Cape Evans and Nimrod Hut at Cape Royds, are located on Ross Island and were all assembled in the early 20th century by the Heroic Era explorers to house the expeditions, stores and animals. These wooden huts were abandoned when the expeditions left. The introduction of wood and other organic material to a pristine environment along with the creation of a microclimate within the harsh Antarctica environment created interesting sites for studying fungal diversity, wood decay and fungal cellulase enzymes in an extreme environment. Each hut can be classified as offering different conditions and circumstances for fungal propagules. Of the three huts, Terra Nova Hut is the only hut where there are visible fungal blooms within the hut and it, with Discovery Hut, had the greatest number of samples that contained fungi compared to Nimrod Hut which had the least. Discovery Hut, at less than 500 metres from the United States McMurdo Station, is the most visited by scientist and base staff and has been the most demonstrably affected by human impact of the three huts due to its closeness to the research stations on Ross Island To ensure a full understanding of the fungal diversity of the Historic Hut sites, a variety of sampling techniques were used along with a variety of culture media. Two thousand and seventy six isolates consisting of 1177 filamentous fungi and 899 single celled microorganisms (yeast and bacteria) were isolated; all these cultures were frozen and now form the University of Waikato Antarctic Culture Collection. Five genera dominated the fungal isolates that were identified and these were Cladosporium, Geomyces, Cadophora, Penicillium and Thelebolus. The fungal diversity of these Historic Huts' communities is low but the members present are metabolically active, consistent with other microbial communities in the Antarctic. The Historic Huts and surroundings contain a diverse array of provision in the way of wood and supplies, which provide nutrient sources for fungal growth. Endemic organisms present in the soil could have been enriched by using the introduced nutrient sources as primary and/or second metabolic substrates. In addition, fungi could have been introduced with the wooden huts and supplies when they were brought to Antarctica by the Heroic Era explorers, or introduced in the subsequent years with visitors and conservation work conducted at the sites. These introduced organisms, though, would have had to adapt to the change in climate and conditions posed by the Antarctic in order to survive and be subsequently isolated in this study. A screen for carboxymethylcellulase (CMCase) activity was done on a selection of the fungal isolates as the first step to understand the cellulytic potential of the Antarctica fungal community inhabiting the huts. One hundred and six fungal isolates from a total of 404, that were screened were deemed to be CMCase positive, 27 fungal isolates were chosen for further study including quantifying the activity of extracellular endo-1,4-β-glucanase at psychrophilic and mesophilic incubation temperatures. All but one isolate could produce endo-1,4-β-glucanase activity at 4 C and many produced more endo-1,4-β-glucanase activity at 4 C than at 15 C. Cadophora malorum 182, Cadophora malorum 242, Penicillium roquefortii 405, Penicillium roquefortii 408, Geomyces sp. 711, Geomyces sp. 824 and Cladosporium oxysporium 805 were selected for in-depth study of growth characteristics including growth temperature preferences, growth on a variety of cellulose substrates, water activity, and carbon sources, the latter done by using a commercially available microtitre plate containing 95 carbon sources. All seven of the fungal isolates were classified as psychrotolerant and produced, when cultured at either 4 C or at 15 C, cellulase, protease, amylase, xylanase, and pectinase and mannanase enzyme activities. The range of water activity that the Antarctic Penicillium roquefortii isolates could grow at was distinctive when compared with food Penicillium roquefortii isolates. The utilisation of different carbon sources showed that like many studies of Antarctica organism they have a diverse range of enzymatic activity, but interestingly the activity does not differ greatly with incubation temperature with most carbon sources being used or not used at both incubation temperatures tested. Although it took longer for the fungi to grow at the psychrophilic temperatures, the range of carbon sources they utilised was not reduced. The protein composition of the extracellular supernatants was visualised using various electrophoretic and staining techniques. The cellulase activity of the protein bands was visualised by cellulose-containing zymograms, which illustrated that the cellulase complex in all fungi tested was multi-enzyme and differed between species, isolates and temperatures of culturing. The cellulase activity of Cadophora malorum 182 was enriched by purification techniques including ion exchange chromatography and native preparative electrophoresis. The protein complex was not purified to homogeneity, but enriched for a mixture of proteins and the mixture was described as having the following properties; a temperature range of β-1,4-glucan cellobiohydrolase activity from 20 C to 80 C with the optimum activity seen at 60 C, β-1,4-glucan cellobiohydrolase activity that is stable at 4, 25 and 40 C for at least 24 hrs, lost at 50 C and 80 C within 24 hrs and 2 minutes respectively. Along with β-1,4-glucan cellobiohydrolase activity, the protein mixture contained Avicelase, CMCase, xylanase and mannanase activity. The thesis research showed that there was limited fungal diversity in the Historic Huts and artefacts (a total of five dominant genera were identified) but the fungi are actively growing and producing viable spores in the cold of Antarctica and producing the necessary enzymes for degradation of wood. Although the metabolism and growth rate is slower at psychrophilic temperatures, the fungal isolates studied as part of this thesis research could still function enzymatically at cold temperatures and this includes the degradation of wood as evidenced by in vitro wood decay studies examined by scanning electron microscopy where two isolates of one species demonstrated the ability to degrade wood. The cellulase complex of the investigated fungal isolate was multi-enzymed and although the components were not purified to homogeneity, an enriched mixture of proteins had enzyme activity and stability in a broad temperature range, and activity to a variety of cellulosic substrates. This thesis research adds to the knowledge of the fungal biodiversity in the Antarctic and increases the understanding of the biochemical framework, participating in relation to wood decay potential of these Antarctic fungal isolates.

Negatywny wpływ zanieczyszczeń emitowanych przez przemysł na lasy jest
szeroko udokumentowany. Skutki ich oddziaływań, przejawiające się m.in. silną
degradacją drzewostanów, są szczególnie widoczne w rejonach przemysłowych.
Najbardziej narażone na zanieczyszczenia przemysłowe w Polsce są lasy na terenie
województwa śląskiego, ze względu na działalność licznych zakładów przemysłowych,
w tym szczególnie uciążliwych dla środowiska przyrodniczego hut i zakładów
przetwórczych metali oraz elektrowni opalanych węglem kamiennym [Zwoliński, Orzeł
2002]. Uszkodzenia drzewostanów w wyniku tych oddziaływań mogą być rezultatem
bezpośredniego działania zanieczyszczeń na drzewa bądź mogą powstawać pośrednio
poprzez zaburzenie funkcjonowania całego układu, jakim jest ekosystem leśny.
Ustalenie zależności pomiędzy stopniem zanieczyszczenia środowiska przez
przemysł a produkcyjnością drzewostanów wymaga stosowania metodyki badań,
pozwalającej na wykluczenie czynników zakłócających tę relację. Możliwość taką dają
badania gradientowe, tj. przeprowadzane na powierzchniach zlokalizowanych w różnych
odległościach od źródła emisji, różniących się stopniem przemysłowego zanieczyszczenia,
lecz porównywalnych pod względem typu siedliska i warunków klimatycznych
[Qinghong, Brakenhielm 1995, cyt. za Zwoliński, Orzeł 2002].
w tym celu badania prowadzono w okolicach Huty Katowice, której obecna nazwa
to Oddział Dąbrowa Górnicza spółki Mittal Steel Poland S.A. w Katowicach, niemniej
jednak w pracy stosowano nazwę skróconą „Huta Katowice”.
Dane dotyczące emisji Huty Katowice pochodzące z lat wzmożonej jej działalności
wskazują na okres niekontrolowanego wzrostu zanieczyszczeń. Po roku 1990 w związku z
przemianami i restrukturyzacj ą zakładu nastąpił gwałtowny spadek deponowanych w
środowisku zanieczyszczeń, a także zmiana ich składu jakościowego - zmniejszenie
udziału pyłów i S0 2 a wzrost udziału NOx. Dlatego niezmiernie istotne jest poznanie
mechanizmów reakcji zachodzących w chwili obecnej w ekosystemach poddanych tak
zmieniającemu się oddziaływaniu czynników antropogenicznych.
Celem badań podjętych w niniejszej pracy było:
- określenie stopnia obciążenia, przez metale ciężkie i siarkę, zbiorowisk borowych
podlegających wpływom emisji z „Huty Katowice”,
- oszacowanie zmian zawartości badanych pierwiastków w glebie i biotestach na
przestrzeni kolejnych lat - ocena stopnia i trwałości kumulacji zanieczyszczeń w wybranych elementach
ekosystemów leśnych,
- określenie przydatności wybranych wskaźników ekologicznych do oceny wpływu
zanieczyszczeń na zbiorowiska borowe.

Recurring moisture problems inside the historic huts, Ross Sea region, Antarctica, have been recorded over the past few decades. Particularly serious problems have been experienced at Scott’s Terra Nova hut at Cape Evans, Ross Island, the focus of this study.
Logged temperature and relative humidity data were analysed for patterns and for correlation with the external weather conditions. A field trip was carried out where physical parameters of the hut were measured to enable accurate modelling of the indoor air state, along with side projects to determine pollutant infiltration. The model provided individual component mass transfers of the four main mechanisms involved, and allowed ‘What if?’ analysis to be performed. The model was used to determine the effects of current policy on the use of the hut and determine the sensitivity to change.
Periods of high relative humidity inside the hut were found to coincide with moisture-laden, northerly weather patterns. Visitor thoroughfare in the hut was not seen to have any lasting effect on the moisture state of the hut, although some local condensation may appear. Ice removal from under the building would remove a source of bulk moisture that has a role in many moisture transactions to the air state of the building. Some small policy changes that would help offset some human-related conditions and improve information gathered in the future have been recommended.

To build for living is to understand that built form exists only in relationship to the life that occupies it and that human life is better when it is in constant interaction with the built environment; we design it, build it, and change it as we design, build, and change our selves. Making your own place and changing it over time is an important component of living one's life to its fullest. To explore these issues, designs were made for an adaptable building type - the "mountain hut," a temporary accommodation for its wandering inhabitants. Designing it twice, as well as relocating the initial building type across the globe, from the mountains of Sierra Nevada to the Himalayas in Nepal, provided an opportunity to compare and understand the influences of local environmental and cultural conditions on the building's adaptability, as well as the level of interactivity its inhabitants could experience as they occupied and transformed the dwelling. Both designs incorporate sustainable design principles, which strengthen the overall comparison of climatic responses and the use of local materials and building technologies.<br>Department of Architecture

Titel: Vad vet 13-åringar om hållbar utveckling, en intervjustudie med elever i årskurs sex. Hållbar utveckling (HUT) innefattar de sociala-, ekologiska- och ekonomiska dimensionerna, vilket har gjort att hela samhället i dag berörs av hållbarhetsfrågor. Forskningen pekar på vikten av att ge kommande generationer möjligheter att möta hållbarhetsfrågorna på ett effektivt sätt. Syftet med den här studien är att undersöka vad trettonåringar vet om hållbar utveckling. Vi intervjuade 22 elever i tre olika skolor varav en skola har fått utnämningen en skola för HUT. Vi delade in vårt material från våra intervjuer i tre kategorier av uppfattningar. En av kategorierna har fått rubriken att bevara jorden som den är för kommande generationer. En annan kategori har rubricerats, konkreta miljöfrågor. Den tredje kategorin har fått rubriken sociala dimensioner. Undersökningen visar att trettonåringars uppfattningar skiljer sig åt om vad de vet om HUT. En del av eleverna ser kopplingen mellan HUT och miljön. Andra tänker långsiktigt och menar att vi måste tänka på kommande generationer när det gäller våra naturtillgångar medan en annan grupp av elever tänker på hur andra människor har det i andra delar av världen. Den största påverkanseffekten på de här eleverna tycks föräldrarna ha haft. De uttrycker att skolan inte i så hög grad påverkat dem i deras förhållningssätt till HUT. Genom vår undersökning kan vi dra slutsatser om att frågorna om HUT bör få en framskjuten roll i skolan. Detta för att eleverna skall förstå vikten av de egna handlingarna och att de spelar en stor roll för kommande generationer.
