Abstract:
Hybosoridae is a relatively small family of Scarabaeoidea, including five extant and one fossil subfamily (Ocampo & Ballerio 2006, Nikolajev 2007). Until now, 20 fossil species were known from five subfamilies: Anaidinae, Ceratocanthinae, Hybosorinae, Liparochrinae, and Mimaphodiinae (Ocampo & Ballerio 2006, Krell 2007, Nikolajev 2008, Nikolajev et al. 2010, Nikolajev 2010a, Nikolajev 2010b, Kirejtshuk et al. 2011). In this paper we describe Pulcherhybosorus tridentatus Yan, Bai, & Ren new genus and new species, from a nearly complete and well-preserved fossil. This fossil represen

A recent phylogenetic analysis of the subfamily Ceratocanthinae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea: Hybosoridae) (Ballerio & Grebennikov 2016) allowed the senior author to re-evaluate the generic placement of Ceratocanthus emarginatus Poinar, 2014, a species recently described from Dominican amber (Poinar 2014). The holotype lacks the enrollment coaptations (see Ballerio & Grebennikov 2016) and the flattened mesotibiae and metatibiae typical of members of the genus Ceratocanthus White, 1842 but has character states found in many species of the genus Germarostes Paulian, 1982. Background:Envenomation by poisonous creatures is a major global cause of mortality. Its concomitant impact on the postmortem corpse decomposition and associated insect succession pattern is still poorly understood. Purpose of the study: This study comparatively investigates the impact of envenomization with the venoms of the snake Walterinnesia aegyptia L. versus the scorpion, Androctonus crassicauda L., on rabbit corpse decomposition and beetle succession. Methods: Three groups of rabbits (five animals each) were injected with the snake venom, the scorpion venom, or 0.9% saline (control) pri
