Abstract:
In this research work, the highly challenging problem of novel modelling and nonlinear control of steam dump system of Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) type Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is attempted. The Fractional Order Multi- Scheduling Parameters based Multi-Input Single- Output Linear Parameter Varying (FO-MSP-MISO-LPV) model of Steam Dump System (SDS) is estimated with uncertain dynamics under sudden load variation transients. MSP for uncertain dynamics of SDS in FO framework is the most challenging problem and attempted in a novel fashion for the first time in nuclear industry. Scheduling parameters are dynamic in nature that makes the control problem more challenging. The Model is estimated experimentally by least square method using innovative plant operational data of opening positions of different valves as input variables and steam pressure as an output variable and cold leg coolant temperature coefficient of reactivity, hot leg coolant temperature coefficient, steam flow rate and turbine power as dynamic scheduling parameters. A switching controller is designed to address variable conditions of steam pressure for the actuation of dump valves, relief valves and safety valves in SDS. A robust fractional order LPV switching H∞ (RFO-LPV-SWH∞) controllers are formulated and designed for FO-MSP-MISO-LPV model. The design of RFO-LPV-SWH∞ controllers is another significant contribution in switching mode with non-integer and LPV hybrid framework. RFO-LPV-SWH∞ controllers are tested, simulated and validated against benchmark transients as laid down in Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR) of PWR-type NPP. The input and output variables at first and second vertex of polytope are fast reference tracking under highly nonlinear uncertain dynamics of SDS. Closed loop simulation experiments are conducted and proved that the proposed closed framework is robust in performance under parametric uncertainty.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the control of a variable speed, pitch regulated wind turbine in the whole plant operating area. The wind turbine operating area can be divided into several zones, depending on the wind speed, and the control objectives are different for each operating zone. An hybrid control system composed by several LPV controllers which switches during transitions from one operating area to another is designed in order to ensure asymptotic stability and a good level of performances in the whole operating area. The LPV controllers are calculated from a convex LMI formulation of the problem in order to minimize an H2=H¥ criteria that optimizes the energy conversion of the system and that reduces the mechanical fatigue of the plant mechanical structure. The proposed controller is finally compared with two more conventional ones.

Abstract:
1524 Background: Next-generation sequencing (NGS) for tumor molecular profiling can reveal germline incidental mutations in hereditary cancer-related genes. The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) has recommended that laboratories performing clinical sequencing seek and report PV and LPV in 56 genes. We assessed the prevalence of incidental germline LPV and PV in other cancer-related genes among patients undergoing hybrid capture sequencing of 201 cancer-related genes. Methods: Matched tumor and germline DNA NGS of a targeted panel of 201 genes was performed in 1000 patients (pts) with advanced or metastatic solid tumors enrolled in a molecular testing protocol (NCT01772771) in a research laboratory. We previously reported germline alterations in the putative most actionable genes as designated by ACMG (PMID: 26787237). We assessed the germline LPV and PV in 54 additional cancer-related genes. Results: Among the 1000 patients who underwent tumor and normal DNA sequencing, 37 patients (3.7%) were found to have a germline PV or LPV in the following genes: ATM (4); BAP1 (1); CDH1 (1); CDKN2A (1); CHEK1 (2); CHEK2 (10); EGFR (1); ERCC3 (4); ERCC5 (1); HNF1B (1); HRAS (1); MLL3 (1); NF1 (3); PKHD1 (4); PTCH1 (1) and SMARCA4 (1). Eight pts (22%) had previous genetic counseling and testing for various reasons, but only 3 pts (8%) had previously identified alterations (all with NF1 mutations). After discussion in our return of germline results board, it was decided to return the findings in established hereditary cancer predisposition genes with high penetrance: BAP1 (p.Y401X), CDH1 (p.C688X), CDKN2A (p.G101W), EGFR (p.T790M) and SMARCA4 (p.S332FfsX55) after validation in a CLIA laboratory. Conclusions: Return of the previously unrecognized germline LPV or PV in patients with advanced or metastatic cancers who undergo somatic profiling is of great interest. The exact genes for which the germline results should be returned is controversial. Broader genomic testing is likely to identify additional incidental germline alterations with potential clinical utility to patients and their relatives.

The objective of this thesis is the design of several control strategies for a hybrid power generator composed by a fuel cell and an auxiliary energy storage source. The Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI) tools are extensively used in this dissertation as a solution to the mutivariable robust control problem. As a first approach, the control methodology is consecrated to the electrical power management sub-system of the fuel cell. Different strategies are proposed to control the hybrid boost power converter configuration for DC voltage applications. The methodology is extended to AC islanded applications considering the additional control of a voltage inverter. The validation on a dedicated test-bench, of a part of the proposed control strategies, is presented. In a second approach, the control of the air supply system is addressed. The management of the air dynamic entering the fuel cell is assured by the control of the air flow of a compressor. The air supply sub-system is controlled to keep a desired oxygen excess ratio, this allow to improve the fuel cell performance. An introduction to the control of Linear Varying Parameter (LPV) systems is also presented. Robustness analysis studies are performed, these robust properties are contrasted with several classic control strategies, demonstrating the advantage and the importance of multivariable robust methodologies

Abstract:
Recent improvements to concentrating solar dish systems lead to further focus on hybridization systems for small-scale power generation applications. Variability of the solar load creates new requirements for combustion systems. This thesis presents a CFD simulation of the air flow inside a new combustor design for the combination of an impinging air solar receiver and a MGT. The system consists of a LPP tubular combustor with radial main swirler and central pilot burner. Focus is made on the pressure loss at the downstream impinging cooling wall for appropriate flow distribution between reacting and bypass air. Heat transfer is not studied due to lack of time. A fully-hexahedral multi-zones mesh of the system without fuel injection has been generated with Ansys ICEM software, making use of its O-grid capabilities. A realizable k-epsilon model is used for turbulence modelling. Several impinging hole’s diameters are studied to find the right balance between the two streams. Streamlines are also observed to confirm the location of recirculation zones and recommend design improvements.

Abstract:
New Zealand Black/White F₁ hybrid (NZB/W) and MRL/Mp-lpr/lpr (MRL/lpr) mice spontaneously develop a Systemic Lupus Erythematosus-like autoimmune disease. While the primary immunologic defect in the NZB/W is due to B cells, in the MRL/lpr it is a result of T cell abnormalities. Diethyldithiocarbamate (DTC), an agent suggested to enhance T cell function, was used to treat both strains. Weekly treatment of NZB/W mice with 25 mg/kg DTC had no significant effect upon survival or autoantibody levels but did induce changes in cell surface antigen expression. MRL/lpr mice treated with DTC displayed normalization of cell surface antigen expression (particularly increased expression of Lyt-2, macrophage markers and Lyt-2⁺/L3T4⁺ thymocytes), decreased lymphoproliferation and thymic atrophy, decreased serum autoantibody levels and kidney deposition of C3 and IgM, restored responses to mitogens and significantly prolonged survival. To determine both the influence of MRL background and lpr genes and to better understand on what cell populations DTC effects, changes in cell surface antigen expression were examined in DTC treated MRL-+/+, Balb/c, and Balb/lpr strains. The only consistent similarities observed between all strains tested were DTC induced changes in Mac-1 splenocyte surface antigen expression. In vitro studies showed DTC to have variable effects upon the mitogenic responses of lymphoid cells to phytohemagluttinin, but DTC alone stimulated both MRL/lpr and Balb/lpr lymphocytes. DTC stimulated the null cell population that predominates in lpr gene-bearing mice, but all observed in vitro effects of DTC were dependent upon the adherent cell population included in culture. DTC had no apparent direct effects upon adherent cells alone however. These studies have shown that DTC is capable of positive effects upon one autoimmune murine strain, the MRL/lpr, but not the NZB/W. DTC appears to affect macrophages, but other cell populations are required to obtain full activity of this compound. The variable effects of DTC emphasize the need to define the immunopathology of individual patients with autoimmune disease before initiating treatment with immunomodulative therapy.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this paper, low-complexity linear parameter-varying (LPV) modeling and control of a two-degrees-of-freedom robotic manipulator is considered. A quasi-LPV model is derived and simplified in order to facilitate LPV controller synthesis. An LPV gain-scheduled, decentralized PD controller in linear fractional transformation form is designed, using mixed sensitivity loop shaping to take — in addition to high tracking performance — noise and disturbance rejection into account, which are not considered in model-based inverse dynamics or computed torque control schemes. The controller design is based on the existence of a parameter-dependent Lyapunov function — employing the concept of quadratic separators — thus reducing the conservatism of design. The resulting bilinear matrix inequality (BMI) problem is solved using a hybrid gradient-LMI technique. Experimental results illustrate that the LPV controller clearly outperforms a decentralized LTI-PD controller and achieves almost the same accuracy as a model-based inverse dynamics and a full-order LPV controllers in terms of tracking performance while being of significantly lower complexity.

Abstract:
The present work aims at studying the aerodynamic flow field within the first Low Pressure Vane (LPV) located downstream of a transonic High Pressure Turbine (HPT). A Zonal Detached-Eddy Simulation (ZDES) which is an hybrid URANS (Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes)-DES approach, appears as a good alternative in terms of computational cost and quality of turbulent phenomena description when it comes to the capture of key parameters of losses generation in a LPV. ZDES is used on the LPV and the unsteady periodic flow field coming from the upstream HPT is modelled through a nonuniform rotating inlet boundary condition. The result is compared to a URANS simulation carried out with the same mesh and numerical parameters: this enables to quantify the differences and to state on the benefit of an advanced turbulent approach. Turbulent mechanisms are assessed with the computation of the power spectral density at different locations in the domain. To complete the analysis, the two numerical predictions are compared to experimental data. Wakes and vortices evolutions are studied in detail making it possible to put them into perspective with the aerodynamic losses generated in the LPV.

Abstract:
HOST is an innovative vehicle concept suitable for the urban transport of both persons and goods. To lower the impact of mobility on the cities, cleaner vehicles are not enough: an integrated passenger and freight strategy must be adopted. Cleaner vehicles must be specifically designed for the purpose to be better than conventional ones under any aspect, including costs. To lower such costs and to start up the Low Polluting Vehicles (LPV) market the versatility of LPVs has to be enhanced. HOST aims at developing a fully versatile low-cost LPV concept. Versatility is achieved by making HOST vehicle modular and cost reduction is obtained by using the same vehicle for different purposes, simply changing different cabins on the same chassis. The main four tasks HOST is conceived for are: • Nocturne collective taxi; • Daytime car sharing services; • Daytime freight collection and distribution; • Nocturne garbage collection. The four mentioned services are not the only ones HOST may be used for, but are those for which it is specifically studied. Such choice is made for one very simple reason: all of the four tasks belong to the same family of “municipal services”. Using the same chassis to operate all the different services is feasible and can finally create the critical mass of final users, so to reach convenient prices. The four services chosen, two addressing passenger mobility and two addressing freight mobility, go all in the way of reducing city mobility impact. Car sharing and nocturne collective taxi systems, if integrated with public transport, can increase its attractiveness, pushing more people to use it. Freight pick-up and delivery and garbage collection need a low polluting alternative to be re-organised, so to become sustainable. The powertrain layout and the possibility to easily vary the platform main dimensions enable HOST to be equipped with very different bodyworks, which let the car manufacturer provides both private and public bodies, such as municipalities or urban mobility authorities. More in detail the energy system is all included in the HOST platform and it is conceived in shaped boxes, so that its modules become inter-exchangeable. A series hybrid configuration let HOST to be equipped with an internal combustion engine (ICE) coupled with an energy recovery system (batteries+supercapacitors), anyhow is already designed to utilise fuel cells (FC) powered by pure hydrogen just changing the energy module (and the tank), being this last the final purpose of the concept design. Thanks to these two solutions HOST is able to run as a zero emission vehicle for a limited period (ICE) or for the whole driving cycle (FC). A full drive-by-wire solution is adopted and the only mechanical connections between the cabin and the platform will be a specifically designed mechanical anchorage, these solutions will allow the easy installation/removal of any cabin. The vehicle has four wheel drive capability (4WD), thus featuring a good grip even on slippery roads. The four electric motors (one per wheel) allow an easy traction control, ensuring stability and safety. The chassis has a four wheel total steering (4WS) configuration, that enables the vehicle to rotate around its vertical axis as well as the to shift horizontally. These characteristics give HOST decisive advantages for the missions it has been conceived for. The 4WS capability gives to the vehicle easy manoeuvring in little streets in the cities centres and they are useful for the accurate positioning to be easily accessible by wheel chairs, during freight loading/unloading operations and while it runs as a garbage truck. Only a modular vehicle featuring the reusing concept can cover contemporarily all the selected services: one vehicle chassis with different sizes interchangeable energy generation modules and different bodies, depending on the service it is used for. Such concept, other than abating the environmental impact, will allow: • a reduction of costs: one chassis can fit several bodies compensating the higher cost of a low environmental impact energy and traction system; • a reduction of occupied space: the vehicle is always in use, night and day; • a reduction of waste materials, increasing their lifetime; • an increased life of vehicles, due to the possibility of changing bodies and energy generation modules; • traffic congestion reduction: using and reusing one vehicle for several services.
