Abstract:
This review essay speaks to the crisis of Area Studies, offering a view from the field in the form of a review of Tsugaru Gaku (Tsugaru Studies) as a specific Area Studies research case. After presenting an overview of the work of social science researchers working in Japan, both foreign and Japanese, the essay turns to major questions articulated in the literature of Area Studies regarding the purpose, character and future of Area Studies. By reviewing the multi-dimensional and combinative implications in the process and dissemination of his own social science research work together with consideration of the work of Japanese social scientists conducting research in rural Japan and publishing in Japanese, the author positions such ‘domestic,’ place-based sociological and anthropological research as a vital contribution to the future of Area Studies. Capitalizing on social scientific research that can contribute to Area Studies research requires a view of the ‘plasticity of research.’ Further, recognition of the ‘hybridity of the Area Studies researcher,’ both as the trained Area Studies specialist as well as a ‘domestic social science researcher’ capable of theory, methodology and analysis, as well as dissemination of Area Studies research originating in a specific place and in a specific language, is vital to the future of Area Studies research.

Abstract:
Purpose of the study: This study aims to examine the postcolonial elements i.e, hybridity, mimicry, and ambivalence concerning Hanif Kureishi’s novel The Black Album (1995). The protagonist of the novel faces religious, economic, social, racial, and ethnic identities in a tormenting and perturbing social order of England. Methodology: This article is based on inductive reasoning and thus exploratory due to its qualitative nature. A close reading method is applied to the text of this paper. For this purpose, the researcher has read carefully the book Close Reading (The Basics 2018) by David Greenham. The method consists of five stages through which the paper scrutinized. Main Findings: The researcher endeavors to find out religious, economic, ethnic, cultural, and social factors behind the identity crisis faced by the protagonist. Hybridity, mimicry, assimilation, and ambivalence play a very vital role in the social life of the protagonist. The researcher found that Shahid Hassan is caught between two identities i.e, Islamic fundamentalism and liberalism. Islamic fundamentalism offered him much peace and satisfaction with the Islamic religion whose leader is Riaz Al Husain but the liberalism attracts his attention with drugs, sex, music, freedom, rock n` rolls, and carefree life in form of Deedee Osgood who is his mentor and is a college lecturer too. He becomes the victim of hybrid identity and remains in an ambivalent state of mind. Being a British immigrant, he always remains in search of his true identity. Being a postcolonial novel, it helps the students, teachers, and literature lovers to know about the biased and rude behaviour of the whites towards non-whites. Application of the study: Foregrounding of postcolonial elements is very significant only in the field of postcolonial study because it highlights economic, religious, political, social, cultural, and ethnic factors of identity crisis. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study is an original contribution as it examines the economic, political, racial, social, and ethnic issues faced by the protagonist. The researcher employed Homi Bhabha’s postcolonial elements to examine the identity crisis faced by the protagonist. Moreover, the close reading method for data analysis is based on originality as well as novelty.

Abstract:
This article seeks to shed light on the diversity of scaling strategies of social enterprises, which can be considered as emblematic hybrid organizations. By comparing three Flemish renewable energy cooperatives with contrasted scaling strategies, the article shows how these strategies can be understood in relation to the organizational mission as imprinted at the founding. We extend the notion of hybridity beyond the combination of institutional logics to highlight the interest orientation (mutual vs. general interest). Unlike what is suggested in extant literature, we find that mutual interest orientation may be associated with “scale-up,” business growth strategies, while general interest orientation may lead to less growth-focused “scale-out” and “scale-deep” strategies. The findings illuminate aspects of the hybrid nature of social enterprises by explaining their diverse scaling strategies and extend the notion of imprinting to the interorganizational level by highlighting how social enterprises may collaborate to collectively achieve the pursuit of their multiple missions.

A decade after IESHR’s Special Issue of 2010, ‘Munshis, Pandits and Record-Keepers: Scribal communities and historical change in India’, we return again to the challenges and dilemmas that scribes, bureaucrats, intellectuals and literati of different kinds faced during the early modern centuries. Building on recent advances in our understanding of these key communities, this Special Issue turns the focus to the eighteenth century. We explore the strategies of individuals as they navigated new conditions of service, unexpected opportunities for personal advancement and the complexities of affiliation amid personal networks that extended across boundaries of region, language and religion. We investigate the important role of scribal people in the literary cultures of the eighteenth century, and the new meanings that their participation gave to literary syncretism and hybridity. We return again to questions of intellectual history and the reflections of scribal service people as they sought to find meaning in the collapse of old political formations and the rise of new ones. This Introduction surveys the recent scholarly literature in these connected fields, situates the essays here in the context of this new work, and identifies some of the key questions which remain to be answered in this critical era of transition between the India of ‘early modernity’ and the coming of the colonial world.

Abstract:
This paper broadens out existing challenges to the divisions between the human and the animal that keep humans distinct, and apart, from other animals. Much attention to date has focused on how the Euro-American individuation of the human subject intensifies the asymmetries inculcated by these divisions. This paper rehearses some of this literature but goes on to attend to how these divisions undercut understandings of sociality and limit social organization to interaction between persons. Drawing together debates around the human/animal relation, the paper juxtaposes different perspectives of nature-cultures to bring ‘worlds’ of relations into view. Specifically, I distinguish here between the state of ‘being alongside’ and the process of ‘being-with’. Ranging from approaches that try to settle ideas of difference through appeals to ‘ethical health’, through to work on identity that ‘unconceals’ a wealth of connection, this distinction will help to keep apart those situated moments of relations, where the constituent parts are left more provisional and contingent, from more sought-out relationships, where a sense of togetherness purposefully dominates the conjoining of activities. Contrasting hybridity as a totalizing form of ‘being-with’, with alongsideness, as a form of intermittent and partial connection, the analysis eschews the obfuscation of difference entrenched in contemporary emphasis on connectivity. Proposing instead the importance of creatures as ‘division preserving', the paper theorizes ways to sustain regard for division as well as connection as key to understanding the arts of dwelling amidst different kinds.

Purpose This paper aims to respond to the circumstances that have made hybridity both a popular term in cultural analysis and a contested, problematic concept. It promotes the need to look at what has been dismissed in discussions of hybridity, namely, mundane and un-exotic examples of cultural mix. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a conceptual and interpretive approach to theoretical and empirical work that engages with the theme of hybridity. Findings The findings highlight how a celebration of hybridity has limited the ways in which the concept can be used for empirical work. It proposes the paradigm of everyday hybridity to work with practical examples of cultural hybridity. Research limitations/implications The implications are to decentre the Western bias that has theorised hybridity without exploring how the concept is relevant to other regions, such as East Asia. Originality/value The value of this work is in providing an audit of the concept of hybridity and a working paradigm for future qualitative research.

Take just about any exercise in social mapping and it is the hybrids, those that straddle categories, that are missing. Take most arrangements of multiculturalism and it is the hybrids that are not counted, not accommodated. So what? This article is about the recognition of hybridity, in-betweenness. The first section discusses the varieties of hybridity and the widening range of phenomena to which the term now applies. According to anti-hybridity arguments, hybridity is inauthentic and ‘multiculturalism lite’. Examining these arguments provides an opportunity to deepen and fine-tune our perspective. What is missing in the antihybridity arguments is historical depth; in this treatment the third section deals with the longue durÈeand proposes multiple historical layers of hybridity. The fourth section concerns the politics of boundaries, for in the end the real problem is not hybridity – which is common throughout history – but boundaries and the social proclivity to boundary fetishism. Hybridity is a problem only from the point of view of essentializing boundaries. What hybridity means varies not only over time but also in different cultures and this informs different patterns of hybridity. Then we come back to the original question: so what? The importance of hybridity is that it problematizes boundaries.

Abstract:
In the field of borderland studies, both theoretical and historical works have contributed to a growing body of analysis that seeks both qualitatively and quantitatively to define the mechanics of group construction and interaction along the U.S./Mexican border. The majority of these works have focused on either, historically, an apology for the Anglo-American conquest of the border region and thus a minimization of the pluralistic composition of border culture or, more recently, a theoretical deconstruction of the colonial border dynamic which favors the minority contributions and condition, notably in Hispanic and Chicano studies.In both cases, the nuances and regional specificities of interaction are downplayed in favor of encompassing theoretical or historical positionings. While not seeking to devalue or to disregard this rich analytical heritage, our thesis strives to expand upon the existing body of borderland study work by focusing on the region of San Diego, California during the formative period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries using recent developments in multiple disciplines as well as revisiting the canonic sources.Our objective is to answer questions such as the following: In the light of current research, and viewed through the prism of representations of personal and community identity constructs, can the historic regional culture of San Diego be viewed as unique and essentially hybrid in nature? If so, how does the revision of this historic culture affect the construction and interpretation of contemporary borderland theories as it applies to this site? What are the implications and stakes for a rapidly developing region - culturally, economically, and politically?In order to answer these questions, a historical contextualization has been established that focuses on the themes of hybridity and mixity. A detailed description and analysis are then made of the regional population and the physical living and working spaces created by it, both in terms of general trends and specific case studies of emblematic architectural site and key historic figures during each of the successive periods of regional governance: Spanish, Mexican and United States. The results of these studies are examined through the optic of canonic historical viewpoints and contemporary theoretical paradigms of borderland study, subjecting them to a broader discussion and placing them within the context of current demographic, socio-economic, and political change. The results of our study favors a complexification of the analysis of interactions and identity constructs along the U.S.-Mexican border, with increasing recognition of hybrid constructs in local spheres.

L'œuvre de l'écrivain Moacyr Scliar témoigne de la transposition de son héritage culturel juif à sa création littéraire, créant un " entre-lieu " propice à la formation de représentations hybrides issues de sa double inscription identitaire : juive et brésilienne. Le présent travail se propose d'étudier les mécanismes de son univers hybride, comprenant autant la forme (hybridité générique) que le fond (hybridité culturelle) de dix-sept récits de fiction publiés entre 1968 et 2008. La première partie de cette étude s'attache à analyser la formation d'un espace judaïco-brésilien en mouvement constant et aussi la spécificité de ses représentations métamorphiques animales. La seconde partie, réservée au genre hybride des métafictions historiographiques, est consacrée à l'analyse des stratégies de traduction culturelle concernant le rapport entre personnages juifs et personnages historiques mythiques. Dans le troisième volet, nous proposons une réflexion sur l'évolution des pratiques intertextuelles bibliques, allant de l' " impli-citation " à la parodie postmoderne.

S'inspirant de l'expérience récente de la migration indienne aux Etats-Unis, la fiction de Jhumpa Lahiri se demande si tant la nation que l'individu sont en mesure de revoir les termes mêmes de leur identité. Jhumpa Lahiri met l'accent sur l'adaptation à l'étranger en tant que processus de longue haleine. Car le changement ne prend pas, dans ce contexte, l'aspect d'une transformation subite ; il s'agit davantage d'une lente négociation entre une tradition surdéterminante et un futur sous-défini. Le meilleur éclairage que l'on puisse apporter à cette littérature de la diaspora, qui gagne en consistance et en légitimité avec l'avènement de la mondialisation, est offert par les outils de la critique postcoloniale. Bien qu'elle soit issue d'un contexte politique, cette école de pensée trouve sa pertinence dans la façon qu'elle a de poser les problèmes afférant à la possibilité de surmonter un passé conflictuel. Comment accepter l'étranger en soi ? Que faire de cette culture qui n'offre pas d'autre choix que celui de la capitulation ? Dans quelle mesure peut-on imaginer une identité où les conflits nés de valeurs contradictoires seraient ramenés à leur plus simple expression ? Notre essai consiste à découvrir de quelle manière le déplacement dû à l'exil induit une série de stratégies de préservation et de transformations identitaires. En dernier ressort, nous nous interrogerons sur les retombées de la conception lahirienne de l'identité, puisque cette romancière semble considérer que les racines et les traditions ne sont que d'une toute relative utilité lorsque l'on se trouve en terre étrangère.

Malgré l'inversion de la signification du cynisme, ses deux acceptions principalesconservent de troublantes similitudes. Tout cynisme se montre : il s'exhibe par le dénuementexemplaire des ascètes comme par les possessions des parvenus. Le cynisme est doncontologiquement théâtral. Par son association à la dérision des valeurs ou à celle de leurabsence, il se rapproche plus spécifiquement de la comédie. Cynisme et comédie ont unemême ambivalence en partage.La relation des dramaturges à l'utile dulci s'est rarement révélée aussi complexe etévolutive qu'entre 1685 et 1750. Leurs postures par rapport à la place du rire et de la moraleau théâtre influent sur leurs manières de représenter le cynisme et l'amoralité. Mais leurappréciation des arcanes des subversions morale et amorale détermine réciproquement lapoétique de leurs comédies.Dancourt, Lesage, Regnard et autres joyeux drilles couvrent de leurs sarcasmes uneamoralité collective qu'ils dédaignent de corriger. Abstract:
This study advances the concept of organizational hybridity (OH). By doing so, it takes into account the individual level of analysis often neglected in organizational theory. More specifically, it aims to understand the implications of organizational hybridity for employees’ trust in contemporary commercial organizations. Informed and guided by current literature, this study argues that the current literature on organizational hybridity fails to adequately address the consequences of hybridity for employees' behaviour. The empirical study was conducted in 2014 using data collected via semi-structured interviews and document analysis. The study was based on a comparison of two case studies in Nigeria: Alter Securities Limited and Barak Petroleum Limited. A total of forty (40) interviews were conducted; twenty (20) from each organization. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. The main findings are that organizational hybridity in this study produced tensions that resulted in negative behavioural responses and employees’ distrust in the commercial hybrid organizations. However, employees’ identification with non-market orientated institutional logics such as family, philanthropic and religious logics is seen to facilitate their commitment, honesty, and trust in the organizations. Nevertheless, caution is required here as religious logics may also lead to an acceptance of unethical behaviour by employees. Overall, this study contributes to the literature on organizational hybridity by extending on Battilana and Lee’s (2014) framework, which highlights governance, leadership, organizational culture and intra-organizational relationships as core organizational attributes in the context of which issues may arise in commercial hybrid organizations. Furthermore, it addresses a gap in Besharov and Smith’s (2014) hybrid typology framework by providing an alternative line of argument focused on understanding how tensions manifest within commercial hybrid organizations. The key recommendations of this research underscore the need for commercial hybrid organizations to invest in mechanisms for improving employees’ trust so as to reap the benefits associated with trust. This could be achieved by involving employees in the decision-making process and clearly communicating the organizations’ values, so as to minimise the misinterpretation of the embodied institutional logics by employees.

Ce travail de recherche interroge un large corpus romanesque de l'île Maurice, produit en français et en anglais pendant les années 1990 et 2010, sur ses différentes inscriptions de la postcolonialité. Ces dernières années voient un mouvement d'innovation et de rupture esthétique, thématique et poétique parmi une jeune génération d'écrivains francophones tandis qu'un tel dynamisme, à quelques exceptions près, semble moins à l'œuvre dans la littérature mauricienne d'expression anglaise. Alors que les voix novatrices des uns se caractérisent par une écriture de la transgression, de la démystification, de l'anti-tropicalisation ainsi qu'une mise en scène complexe d'interrogations sur des questions identitaires, celles des autres restent confinées dans un certain immobilisme. Le constat d'un champ littéraire clivé à plusieurs égards est inévitable. Une lecture croisée, entre ces différentes scénographies, qui s'articule autour des leitmotivs de la violence et de l'interculturalité permettra d'analyser de façon critique un certain nombre de tendances scripturaires romanesques actuellement en coprésence à Maurice. Selon quelles modalités se fait la représentation et la négociation des espaces-temps insulaires ? Quelles logiques ethnoculturelles et dynamiques idéologiques sous-tendent ces textes ? Comment le roman met-il en scène les facteurs de l'ethnicité, de la classe, du genre ? En d'autres mots, comment pense-t-il - ou refuse de penser - la complexité de la nation multiculturelle ? cannot be answered thoroughly because there is a continuous power struggle between the European and the non-European characters. 2) The theme of othering in the novel is based on a view of humanity and its conflicts that is radically ambivalent, and thus cannot be analyzed from one perspective only. 3) Conrad&rsquo
s world view which is reflected in the novel is not limited to one group of people, but tends to be universal. The second theoretical concept, hybridity, is analyzed under three subtitles: ambivalence, mimicry and hybridity.

Le contexte politico-religieux particulièrement virulent des dernières décennies du XVIe siècle et des premières du XVIIe siècle a vu naitre une littérature brève tout à fait singulière, nourries d'influences diverses. Les histoires tragiques et les faits divers sanglants sont deux genres qui évoluent et coexistent à cette époque. Le premier se présente dans lignée des nouvelles de l'italien Mateo Bandello, et est influencé par toute cette littérature brève oscillant entre le tragique et le comique au milieu du XVIe siècle. Le genre se poursuit dans les premières décennies du XVIIe siècle sous la plume d'écrivains missionnaires de la foi catholique, dans cadre purement tragique et très influencés par les marques stylistiques de l'esthétique baroque. Au sein-même de ce genre, il a été proposé un classement tripartite relatif à la diachronie des récits. Ainsi, trois générations ont été considérées à partir d'auteurs-phares ayant un vrai impact sur l'évolution du genre : la première représentée par Pierre Boaistuau et François de Belleforest s'ouvre dans les années 1560 et se situe dans le prolongement du nouvelliste Bandello. La seconde, appartient aux années 1580 et marque l'affirmation des codes du genre, dans son positionnement par rapport tragique, mais aussi dans les choix des sujets traités grâce aux recueils de Vérité Habanc et Benigne Poissent. Enfin la troisième génération, correspondant aux années 1610-1630 est illustrée par François de Rosset et Jean-Pierre Camus qui portent le genre à son apogée en exploitant la vigueur démonstratrice du canard sanglant et l'influence romanesque propre à séduire le lecteur. Les " canards sanglants ", dont l'expression a été empruntée au recueil de Maurice Lever, est proprement un outil de propagande massive, anonyme mais que l'on sait déployés par Rome, qui souhaite alors réaffirmer les postulats de l'église catholique sous le nouveau regard des dogmes du Concile de Trente. En outre, c'est dans un contexte éditorial tout à fait favorable, grâce à l'imprimerie, que se développe cette littérature proprement nationale qui prend ses assises dans un contexte de méfiance généralisée vis-à-vis des nations voisines. Il se trouve que l'histoire tragique et le " canard sanglant " ont toujours été étudiés de manière exclusive par la critique jusqu'alors. Toutefois, des convergences génériques et formelles remarquables se pressentent entre les deux genres. Cette étude novatrice interroge les fondements génériques et formels permettant de considérer une structure stable à ce que serait le " récit épouvantable " à cette époque. Dans un premier chapitre les problématiques relatives au genre des récits épouvantables sont envisagées : quels sont les fondamentaux structuraux qui sous-tendent ces deux genres ? Dans quelle mesure les influences génériques fondatrices (novella italienne, tragédie) puis novatrices à l'époque (roman sentimental) ont-elles participé de l'évolution formelle du récit épouvantable tout en maintenant une logique narrative commune ? Du fait qu'aucun art poétique ne se soit intéressé à ces formes de récit, la définition de contours génériques est apparue come une nécessité. Les études formalistes (russes, italiennes et françaises) ont servi de point d'ancrage à la réflexion. La tripartition : énonciation de la loi/transgression/punition a été nuancée au regard de la diversité des textes. Ceux-ci présentent, en effet, la particularité d'être excessivement poreux aux autres formes génériques en vogue à l'époque (la tragédie, le roman, l'histoire de loi et l'expression poétique). Ce constat n'a pas été une surprise dans la mesure où ces récits reposent aussi sur la séduction du lecteur. Un second chapitre analyse en détail les unités constitutives du genre suivant le protocole narratif. Le titre constitue, tout d'abord une étape importante car il est au seuil du récit et détourne les attentes habituelles liées à sa fonction. En effet, celui-ci, particulièrement dense, se présente sous la forme d'un résumé en comportant toutes les informations délivrées par la narration, jusqu'à l'issue invariante, qui se caractérise par un procès et un jugement. La variatio s'exécute alors dans les différents châtiments établis en fonction du crime commis. Cette unité liminaire est le lieu d'une étude précise, au moyen de graphiques et de tableaux comparatifs, portant sur la dénomination générique et qualitative de ces récits. L'exorde apparait ensuite comme le lieu de la leçon. Le narrateur y déplore, aux moyens de procédés canoniques tels que le laudator tempris acti ou les procédés de lyrisme tragique la décadence du temps présent et les menaces qui pèsent sur le peuple français. Le discours moral, sa fonction et sa place y sont étudiés comme les marques d'une stratégie narrative qui n'obtient pas, somme toute, l'effet escompté sur l'apitoiement du lecteur. La question de la crédibilité de l'instance narratrice pour donner la leçon est soulevée ainsi que l'échec du dispositif cathartique appliqué à la narration. Une deuxième étape dans ce chapitre s'intéresse à l'exécution de l'acte central dans les récits épouvantables, à savoir l'acte sanglant. Deux formes de représentation ont été identifiées : l'une élabore une description dynamique et proprement romanesque de la mort, l'autre, qualifiée de " mort-tableau " envisage un portrait pictural de la scène. Par ailleurs, les correspondances esthétiques liées aux mouvements maniéristes (auteurs de la deuxième génération) et baroques (canards sanglants et auteurs de la troisième génération d'histoires tragiques) ont été étudiées dans leur réalisation au sein des récits. L'art s'est avéré être un puissant vecteur de propagande visuelle introduit au sein de la narration. Enfin, une étude microstructurale de la phrase a montré que la précipitation tragique s'exerce à tous les niveaux du récit épouvantable : de la composition narrative, au discours et à la phrase. En effet, l'abondance de subordonnées consécutives et de procédés rhétoriques tels que l'hyperbole et l'antithèse apparaissent comme des indices stylistiques annonçant la chute tragique du personnage ou précipitant la catastrophe. Un troisième chapitre interroge la délicate question de la vérité au sein de ces récits. Si des faits historiques sanglants ou des faits divers attestés constituent le vivier principal du corpus, certaines histoires, comme les portraits de monstres apparaissent comme des vestiges médiévaux que le lecteur ne craint plus. Aussi, la solution du vraisemblable a été envisagée comme le plus louable pour rendre compte de ces anecdotes qui oscillent entre volonté d'effrayer et nécessité d'établir une leçon crédible pour le lecteur. Enfin nous nous sommes interrogés sur les spécificités thématiques et formelles liées aux crimes et aux criminels qui caractérisent les deux genres. Encore une fois le support de graphiques est venu expliciter cette démarche fastidieuse révélant des tendances sur les sujets abordés par les récits épouvantables dans l'espace temporel du corpus. Les statistiques ont montré que les histoires d'amour malheureuses et les vengeances familiales (surtout présents chez les auteurs de la troisième génération, ont supplanté les récits de guerre que l'on retrouvait notamment chez Bénigne Poissent. Nous y voyons l'influence des thèmes développés dans le roman sentimental à la mode à l'époque. En revanche, les " canards sanglants " conservent cette spécificité thématique des récits de monstre et ceux de catastrophe naturelle qui lui est propre. Il a été choisi, lors d'un dernier chapitre, de mettre en regard deux genres littéraires qui possèdent des convergences formelles remarquables avec els récits épouvantables. Il s'agit des " chroniques journalières " de Pierre de l'Estoile et des épitomes judiciaires d'Alexandre-Sylvain Van Den Bussche. Alors que le premier genre possède les qualités principales de l'anecdote détaillée prise sur le vif, tout en témoignant des réalités crues d'une époque (celle d'Henri III et d'Henri IV), l'autre rend compte d'une forme rhétorique invariante directement issue du mode plaidoirie, exposant un cas sanglant et problématique au niveau de la loi. Les deux victimes exposent leurs arguments sans qu'il y ait une issue prononcée. Cependant, le second argumentaire apparaît toujours le plus favorable aux yeux du narrateur, illustrant une juste mesure qui dans la réflexion sur les crimes. En conclusion nous sommes parvenus à élaborer des principes esthétiques et formels communs et stables du " récit épouvantable " à la fin du XVIe et au début du XVIIe siècle, tout en se gardant bien de généraliser certaines nuances et exceptions qui produisent toutes la richesse de ces histoires génériquement hybrides et idéologiquement très ancrés dans un nouveau combat pour la foi. Produits d'une époque, ils en comportent toutes les marques, cette littérature " belliqueuse " ne laisse pas indifférente car elle se veut profondément active sur le lecteur. Que ce soit en lui assénant des images frissonnantes ou des leçons particulièrement strictes, le plaisir s'en voit intimement lié à la nécessité démonstrative. Il semble, en outre, que leur évolution les dissocie : les auteurs " tardifs " qui ont suivi Camus, dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle (Claude Malingre et Jean-Nicolas Parival) n'ont pas su renouveler le genre pourtant très lu encore jusqu' à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Sade y voit des exemples de vices tout à fait remarquables qu'il réintroduit dans sa littérature licencieuse en évacuant la dimension morale du Grand Siècle. Au-delà, il n'en est plus question. C'est pourquoi, l'histoire tragique et ses valeurs semble s'effondrer avec l'Ancien Régime. Paradoxalement, alors que le " canards sanglants " représentait une expression ponctuelle de propagande liée à un contexte spécifique, c'est lui qui a le mieux su se renouveler. Sa forme, plus souple, lui permis de conserver l'essentiel de ce que le lecteur affriole, à savoir l'anecdote sanglante, tout en se débarrassant du carcan moral. Plus que jamais celui-ci se trouve d'actualité, toujours en sachant renouveler son format au gré du lectorat et des époques.

Abstract:
In 1991 the Indian government officially sanctioned the country’s definitive entry into the global market and into a new era. This study focuses on the generation that epitomizes this new era and is based on fieldwork among young English-speaking, educated, Delhi-based men involved in occupations such as tourism, Internet, multinationals, journalism and sports. These young men construct their role in society by promoting themselves as brokers in the ongoing exchanges between India and the outer world. Together they constitute a heterogeneous whole with different class-, caste- and regional background. Yet, they can all be seen as members of the ‘middle class’ occupying a relatively privileged position in society. They consider the opening of India to the global market as the key-event that has made it possible for them to live an “interesting life” and to avoid becoming “boring people”. This exploration into the life-world of these young men addresses in particular how they construct their identities facing the messages and images that they are exposed to through work- and leisure-networks. They understand themselves and what surrounds them by invoking terms such as ‘India’ and ‘West’, ‘tradition’ and ‘modernity’, mirroring the debates on change that have gone on in India since colonization. Yet, they imaginatively re-work the content of these discourses and give the quoted terms new meanings. In their usage ‘being Indian’ is turned into a ‘global’, ‘modern’ and ‘cosmopolitan’ stance while ‘being Westernized’ becomes a marker of ‘backwardness’ and lack of sophistication. Their experiences mark out the popularity of notions of ‘Indianness’ in contemporary metropolitan India. The study focuses on how social actors themselves experience their self-identity and how these experiences are influenced by the actors’ involvement with international flows of images and conceptualizations. It will primarily approach cultural identities through labels of belonging to abstract categories with shifting reference (referred to them as ‘phantasms’) such as ‘India’, ‘West’, etc. The study suggests that the ‘import’ of trans-national imagination into everyday life gives birth to sub-cultural formations, new ‘communities of imagination’. Their members share a similar imagination of themselves, of Delhi, their country and the world.
