Abstract:
Experimental plantings of several species and crosses of Amaranthus were monitored during the 1990–1992 growing seasons to identify diseases that might limit commercial production of grain amaranth in Missouri. Two diseases, previously unreported on the Amaranthus spp. being evaluated in Missouri, are described. Pythium stem canker, caused by Pythium aphanidermatum, was observed when high temperatures coincided with prolonged periods of soil saturation. Tan cankers with black borders developed at the soil line on nearly mature (flowering) plants and lodging was associated with 2.7% of plants examined. Of the species and crosses examined, A. cruentus (cultivar K436) and A. hypochondriacus × A. hybridus (cultivars K432, K433, and K593) were affected most severely by the disease. Differences in susceptibility among the 11 cultivars suggest the potential for the development of disease-resistant cultivars. Charcoal rot, caused by Macrophomina phaseolina, affected A. hypochondriacus × A. hybridus (cultivars K432 and K433) growing in two mid-Missouri locations in 1990. Key words: Amaranthus cruentus, Amaranthus hypochondriacus, Amaranthus hypochondriacus × Amaranthus hybridis, charcoal rot, grain amaranth, stem canker.

Abstract:
currently, the comprehensive utilization of red mud has been a worldwide challenge. Due to high alkaline level and a serious lack of nutrients, a great amount of red mud has been stocked in the open rather than covered by plantations, which showed harms to the atmosphere, water and soil environment. In order to explore a more effective phytoremediation approach of red mud and screen plants with strong tolerance, the research group applied Pennisetum hybridum as the experiment material for a long term, which is a new energy plant in the field of ecological environmental management and restoring. Through the addition of different types of addictives, his experiment conducted the plantation Pennisetum hybridum based on red mud improvement matrix. Besides, a systematic research of the improvement effects of different ameliorants on red mud was conducted. Concurrently, the growth of Pennisetum hybridum in different groups of the experiment was investigated. Their mutual effect on the improvement effect of red mud was analyzed systematically. Results demonstrated that effective raw materials of red mud improvement include phosphogypsum, wastes of polluted and edible mushrooms. These can significantly reduce the pH and conductivity of red mud. After the improvement, Pennisetum hybridum can grow vigorously in the mixture matrix of red mud, and significantly improve the red mud matrix. Concurrently, considerable biomasses were obtained. The experiment results demonstrated that the addition of necessary nutriments for the plant growth was very important for red mud. The research has laid a solid foundation for the identification of the great potentials of Pennisetum hybridum in red mud phytoremediation, the further exploration of its role of restoring of red mud and the extensive application and promotion in the future.

Abstract:
New hybrids of the first generation of sunflower of three ripeness groups with a high content of oleic acid in oil have been bred at the Federal State Budget Scientific Research Institute of the South-East region. A study of these hybrids in the conditions of the Saratov region in 2017–2018, conducted as a competitive varietal test, showed that new hybrids of the first generation of sunflower with a record oleic acid content in oil were obtained: early-ripening hybrid PG 784 - 79.0%, short-season hybrid PG-815 - 85.0%, mid-season hybrid PG-802 - 82.2%, which is 8.3-14.3% more than previous hybrids. The maximum harvest of oleic acid per unit area in the best early ripening hybrid of PG 784 was 1.06 t/ha, in the best short-season hybrids PG-812, PG-814 and PG-815 –1.02 t/ha, in the best mid-ripening hybrid PG-802 - 1.14 t/ha. It has been experimentally proved that, in the Saratov region it is possible to breed early-ripening, short-season and mid-ripening hybrids of the first generation of sunflower with an oleic acid content in oil of more than 80% and harvesting of oleic acid from a unit area of more than 1 t/ha.

Abstract:
Amaranthus hybridus is a noxious weed in Ontario, with demonstrated allelopathic properties that can lead to decreased agricultural production. We tested the germination and growth of five cover crop species exposed to A. hybridus extracts, and to dried or fresh materials in soil. A germination index was calculated, and the dry weight of plant organs were measured to quantify responses to treatments. All species had reduced germination (≤29%) in 100% extract. Trifolium pratense had significant root weight reductions in extract (52%) and dried (72%) treatments, whereas shoot weight only decreased (48%) in dried treatment. Medicago sativa shoot weight decreased (52%) in 20g fresh treatment, while root weight decreased (62%) in dried treatment. Shoot weight of Raphanus sativus increased (32%) at mid-extract concentrations, while root weight increased (33%) only with dried treatment; however, both its shoot and root weight decreased (>40%) in fresh treatment. Only the shoot weight of Lolium multiflorum increased (41% in 75% extract and 55% in dried treatment). Both Cichorium intybus shoot and root weights decreased (~50%) in fresh treatment. Crop responses to A. hybridus are complex, and material and species-dependant. Further testing in the field may provide a more comprehensive understanding of how to improve the management of A. hybridus.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractOrganic cropping systems are characterized by soil-disturbance events that can be diversified over years through crop rotations and within seasons by varying planting dates. The Farming Systems Project at Beltsville, MD, USA, is a long-term experiment that includes three organic rotations, corn (Zea mays L.)–soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], corn–soybean–wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and corn–soybean–wheat–alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Analysis of weed presence and cover over the first 18 yr of this experiment revealed that the tall, erect annual broadleaf weeds smooth pigweed (Amaranthus hybridus L.), common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.), horseweed (Erigeron canadensis L.), jimsonweed (Datura stramonium L.), and/or velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medik.) were most prominent in corn and soybean. Generally, these species exhibited traits adapted to the disturbance regimes, nutrient availability, crop environment and duration, and local meteorological conditions associated with the summer annual corn and soybean crops. Abundance of A. hybridus, D. stramonium, and A. theophrasti were controlled primarily by rotation diversity, whereby presence and cover of these species were highest in the short corn–soybean rotation and lowest in the longer rotations that had more diverse seasonal soil-disturbance regimes. Early-season temperature was the primary factor controlling C. album presence and cover, which were higher at lower temperatures associated with earlier planting dates. Higher early-season precipitation was the primary factor associated with higher presence of annual grass species. The relative abundance of species in organic corn and soybean was determined primarily by the diversity of crops and disturbance operations in rotation, the timing of spring tillage and planting, and annual meteorological conditions driving emergence periodicity.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract There is little information addressing the impact of quantity of pre-plant phosphate charge in soilless substrate and leaching during production on soluble phosphate longevity when post-plant phosphate is omitted. Two experiments were conducted growing Petunia ×hybrida ‘Primetime White' seedling crops over a 42-d period in a sphagnum peat moss-perlite substrate. Phosphate-phosphorus (P) charge levels of 0.03, 0.06, 0.12, and 0.18 kg.m−3 (0.05, 0.10, 0.20 and 0.30 lbs·yd−3, respectively) and 0, 20, and 50% leaching were tested. The first experiment was conducted in winter (late November through December) and the second in spring (mid-March through April). The minimum-targeted, soluble-bulk-solution phosphate-P level of 3 mg.L−1 (ppm) was achieved for 41 d in the winter with a phosphate-P charge of 0.06 kg.m−3 (0.10 lbs·yd−3) and 20% leaching. Longevity for this treatment was 4 d less in the spring. At 0% leaching, the soluble-bulk-solution phosphate-P level was above the minimum target level of 3 mg.L−1 (ppm) for the entire 42-d period in both seasons. Increasing the leaching from 20 to 50% resulted in a loss of longevity by 4 d in the winter and 6 d in the spring. Index words: soilless media, bedding plants, floriculture, Petunia ×hybrida, plant nutrition. Species used in this study: petunia (Petunia ×hybrid var. multiflora Vilm.).

Three trilobites, Hypagnostus aff. clipeus, Cotalagnostus sp. nov., and Pagetides johannis sp. nov., not previously recorded in Newfoundland, are associated with Onymagnostus cf. hybridus, H. mammillatus, Peronopsis cf. fallax minor, Paradoxides (P.) davidis davidis, P. (P.) cf. abenacus, Brunswickia (B.) cf. jaculator, B. (Jincella) sp., Agraulos sp., and some hyolithids, stenothecid molluscs and orthid, acrotretid and lingulate brachiopods in a thin limestone within dark grey, slaty mudstones of the Young's Cove Formation on St. John's Island, Fortune Bay. A stratigraphical position within the Cambrian punctuosus Zone in the upper part of the Drumian Stage is indicated. The presence of the oculate eodiscid Pagetides in late mid-Cambrian rocks, within the Avalon Tectonostratigraphical Zone, is highlighted, because the genus was previously only known associated with the much earlier Cambrian olenellid zones of Laurentia. Paradoxides (P.) cf. abenacus and the species of Brunswickia (B.) close to peregrina, respectively, provide a link with the New Brunswick mid-Cambrian and paradoxissimus successions in England and Scandinavia, whereas the specimens of Hypagnostus aff. clipeus indicate a more global significance in common with forms in the punctuosus sequences of Siberia and Australia. The St. John's Island sequence includes lithofacies and fossils typical of the Manuels River Formation preserved elsewhere in southeastern Newfoundland. This is the first recognition of such a sequence in the Young's Cove Formation of Fortune Bay on the western margin of the Avalon Tectonostratigraphical Zone.

COVID-19 pandemien ændrede i 2020 hverdagen for uddannelsesinstitutioner verden over.

Abstract:
The Advanced Hyperspectral Imager (AHSI), carried by the Gaofen-5 (GF-5) satellite, is the first hyperspectral sensor that simultaneously offers broad coverage and a broad spectrum. Meanwhile, deep-learning-based approaches are emerging to manage the growing volume of data produced by satellites. However, the application potential of GF-5 AHSI imagery in lithological mapping using deep-learning-based methods is currently unknown. This paper assessed GF-5 AHSI imagery for lithological mapping in comparison with Shortwave Infrared Airborne Spectrographic Imager (SASI) data. A multi-scale 3D deep convolutional neural network (M3D-DCNN), a hybrid spectral CNN (HybridSN), and a spectral–spatial unified network (SSUN) were selected to verify the applicability and stability of deep-learning-based methods through comparison with support vector machine (SVM) based on six datasets constructed by GF-5 AHSI, Sentinel-2A, and SASI imagery. The results show that all methods produce classification results with accuracy greater than 90% on all datasets, and M3D-DCNN is both more accurate and more stable. It can produce especially encouraging results by just using the short-wave infrared wavelength subset (SWIR bands) of GF-5 AHSI data. Accordingly, GF-5 AHSI imagery could provide impressive results and its SWIR bands have a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which meets the requirements of large-scale and large-area lithological mapping. And M3D-DCNN method is recommended for use in lithological mapping based on GF-5 AHSI hyperspectral data.

Abstract:
Comparisons of the grain yields of pure lines derived from heterotic hybrides were made with those of the F1 hybrids and their parents for four hand-made crosses, and with the hybrid in the case of the commercial hybrid cultivar Comet. Seventy-five F7 (F6 in the case of Comet) single seed descent lines from each cross were evaluated in hill plot experiments containing five plots of each parent and hybrid per replication. Mid-parent and high-parent heterosis averaged 17% and 10.7% respectively in the four hand-made hybrids. Thus hybrid breeding of wheat could achieve a significant yield advance because the parental genotypes were advanced breeding lines or commercial cultivars. The estimated genotypic value for grain yield of the best pure line derived from each cross was 98, 96, 94, 91 and 85% of the corresponding hybrid mean yield, and even higher yields could be expected from a larger sample of derived pure lines. A hybrid breeding program cannot therefore be justified solely on the basis of yield comparisons between hybrids and pure lines.

Abstract:
Aquilegia ×hybrida `Bluebird' and `Robin', grown as greenhouse pot plants, initiated flower buds before cold exposure (4.5C) under supplemental high-pressure sodium lamps in mid-December, 5.5 months from sowing. Low temperature was the primary environmental factor that affected floral development in `Bluebird'. As the length of the cold exposure increased, the time between appearance of visible buds, anthesis, and petal shattering decreased, as did inflorescence number and total flower number per plant. Gibberellic acid (GA3) at 100 or 200 mg·liter-1 accelerated the appearance of visible buds during forcing in treatments without cold exposure. Soil drench applications of GA3 2 weeks before cold treatment accelerated floral development more than GA3 applied after cold exposure. Inflorescence number and total flower number per plant were reduced by 4 or 8 weeks but not by 2 weeks of exposure to cold. The developmental rate of “Robin', i.e., appearance of visible buds and anthesis, was quicker in plants with 18 to 20 leaves than in those with 12 to 14 leaves.

Abstract:
The cultivated gerbera daisy [Gerbera hybrida (G. jamesonii Bolus ex Adlam × G. viridifolia Schultz-Bip)] often contracts powdery mildew (PM) when grown under conditions of high humidity. During field and greenhouse performance trials conducted with gerberas of the North Carolina State University collection, two half-sib field plants and two of their greenhouse-grown progeny were identified as being highly resistant to PM caused by Podosphaera (Sphaerotheca) fusca (Fr.) Blumer emend. Braun & Takamatsu. These plants were also unusual in having smooth glossy leaves with very low numbers of bristle macrohairs (MHs) on the adaxial leaf surface compared to wild type. The primary objectives of this investigation were to determine the mode of inheritance of PM resistance and MH density traits and determine if there was a causal relationship between the phenotypes. Parental genotypes were determined by testcrosses to wild-type, PM-susceptible and MH-high-density leaf cultivars. For each trait, a series of crosses were made to produce PA, PB, F1, F2, BC1A, and BC1B progeny. Linkage relationships among PM resistance and MH density loci were examined by testcrosses. Phenotypic segregation ratios suggested the presence of a dominant allele, Pmr1, determining PM resistance and an unlinked dominant allele, Mhd, determining low density of adaxial bristle MHs and moderate reduction in abaxial smooth MHs. The Pmr1 allele appeared to be incompletely dominant in some heterozygotes where one parent was from a highly PM susceptible background. Modifying genes may have some affect on the level of PM resistance or susceptibility. The Mhd allele appeared to be incompletely dominant in some heterozygotes. Segregation ratios indicated that the wild-type alleles were recessive to the PM-resistance and MH-low-density alleles and given the designation pmr1 and mhd, respectively. Density of leaf MHs did not affect PM resistance.

Abstract:
The Institute of Evolution Wild Cereal Gene Bank (ICGB) at the University of Haifa, Israel, harbors extensive collections of wild emmer wheat (WEW), Triticum dicoccoides, and wild barley (WB), Hordeum spontaneum, the primary progenitors of wheat and barley, respectively. The ICGB also includes minor collections of 10 species of Aegilops, wild oat (Avena barbata), and Brachypodium stacei and B. hybridum (previously distachyon). Here, we describe the WEW and WB collections, explain sampling strategies, and introduce related studies. Natural populations were sampled across Israel along aridity gradients, occurring from north to south and from west to east, and in local microsites with variable (or contrasting) ecological factors. The collection sites varied greatly in terms of climatic (rainfall, temperature and humidity), edaphic (soil types), and topography (altitude, slope) variables. Thus, the ICGB collections represent wild cereals adapted to a wide range of habitats and eco-geographical conditions. We have collected and preserved these unique gene pools since mid-70th, and further used them for theoretical and applied studies in population genetics, evolution, domestication, adaptation to local and regional habitats, and coping mechanisms for a plethora of biotic and abiotic stresses. Our studies revealed that WEW and WB populations from Israel harbor high adaptive genetic diversity that can serve as a reservoir of beneficial alleles to improve important agronomic traits such as disease resistance, drought tolerance and improved grain protein content. These mostly untapped genetic resources could contribute to increasing world food production for the constantly rising human population.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of a variety of commonly used soil surface covers on the establishment of Cercis canadensis L. var. texensis (Wats.) Rose. `Alba'. Containerized 23.3-L trees were planted into 1.1 × 1.5-m plots separated by metal landscape edging in 20-cm-deep raised beds constructed of exterior treated landscape timbers. Eight soil surface treatments were imposed with five replicates each. Controls included bare soil with no cover. The remaining seven treatments consisted of 8-cm depth of pine bark mulch, Trachelospermum asiaticum (Siebold & Zucc.) Nakai on 30-cm centers mulched with 8 cm of pine bark, solid sodded Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze, 8 cm of decorative gravel, 3 cm of recycled paper mulch, brick pavers underline with 5 cm of coarse builders sand (brick-on-sand), and seasonal color mulched with 8 cm of pine bark. The color rotation for summer, fall / winter, and spring is Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don, Viola × wittrockiana Gams., and Petunia × hybrida Hort. Vilm.-Andr., respectively. Preliminary data indicates that mulching with pine bark resulted in similar or slightly increased trunk diameter growth over that of bare soil. Brick-on-sand and the recycled paper mulch had smaller increases in trunk diameter than the other treatments. Mid-day leaf water potentials of most treatments were similar to bare soil, but the mid-day water potentials of trees mulched with recycled paper were among the most negative. All treatments except brick-on-sand trees recovered as well or better than trees in the bare soil by the next morning. Poor predawn water potential recovery of brick-on-sand trees may be due to the elevated temperatures observed in their root zone. Bare soil, recycled paper mulch, and the annual treatments had the most negative soil moisture tensions on average. The bare soil may be due to increased evaporative loose over mulched soils. The large biomass of vinca as the season progressed may account for the more negative readings in the annual seasonal color plots.

Abstract:
It is a common practice in greenhouses to apply fertilizers with a high proportion of N in the NO3 form to achieve short, compact shoots and a moderate (25% or greater) proportion of NH4 or urea for large shoots. However, this practice is not substantiated in the scientific literature. Two experiments were conducted in a greenhouse to assess effects of N form on development. In the first, Petunia hybrida `Mid-night Dreams' was treated with five ratios of NH4:NO3 or urea:NO3 in a factorial arrangement with three concentrations of N (50-low, 100-adequate, and 200-high mg/L at each irrigation). In the second experiment six species of bedding plants were treated in a factorial arrangement of five ratios of NH4:NO3 and two pH levels (acceptably low, 5.4-5.8, and unacceptably low, 4.6-5.2). In all comparisons, height and dry weight of shoots grown with 100% NO3 were equal or larger than the plants grown with combinations of N. There was a general trend for plants to be shorter and lighter at higher NH4 or urea proportions. These results refute the hypothesis that shoot size is under the control of N form. Depth of green foliar color correlated positively with proportion of NH4 or urea. Reputed NH4 toxicity symptoms of chlorosis, necrosis, and curling of older leaves occurred only at adversely low pH levels below 5.2 in experiment 2. Resistance of plants to this disorder under conditions of pH levels in the range of 5.4 to 5.8, high N application rates, and applications of 100% NH4 indicates that bedding plants during commercial production are fairly resistant to this disorder.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of breeding work (2004–2018), aimed to create a highly winter hardiness hay-pasture variety of alsike clover (Trifolium hybridum L.) KB-4M, which forms 9–11 t/ha of dry matter in 2–3 mowings, with a seed productivity 130–150 kg/ha. The breeding population KB-4M was created in the Federal Williams Research Center of Forage Production and Agroecology. This breeding population is a complex hybrid population created as a result of free-confined pollination of tetraploid genotypes. The genotypes of 'Krasavik' variety are female parents. 'Krasavik' variety was created in the Research and Practical Center of National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus for Arable Farming. Pollinating varieties: 'Alpo' (Norway), 'Högsta' (Sweden), 'Eutetra' (Germany). The breeding population KB-4М is mid-ripening. Period from spring growth till first cutting is 37–47 days, till seeds ripening — 112–120 days. The winter hardiness is quite high (90.0–99.8%). During the period of competitive variety testing (2014–2016) the breeding population KB-4M has demonstrated an advantage over the standard 'Pervenets' in terms of the main economically valuable properties. For the three testing cycles have been demonstrated the following characteristics of yielding ability: green mass — 48.8–64.3 t/ha (9.9–24.6% more than the standard), hay — 9.14–12.37 t/ha (18.2–23.3% more than the standard), seeds — 130–150 kg/ha (18.2–22.7% more than the standard). The nutrient value: crude protein, depending on the cut, 169–223 g/kg dry matter, crude fiber — 139–275 g/kg. In 2020, the breeding population KB-4M was transferred to the state variety testing. This breeding population recommended for hayfields and pastures in all regions of alsike clover cultivation, especially for heavy, loamy, wet soils with high acidity (pH less than 5.5) and thin humus-layer, as well as for: grassing and land resting, cultivation of bog soils and peat bogs, establishment of melliferous crops.

Abstract:
The data analyzed consists of interviews with teachers and students in the school subjects of history and English at the secondary and at the upper secondary level. Our analysis shows the central themes that teachers and students communicated with regard to their experiences with the use of textbooks and the Internet. We use the continuum from closed to open resources as a conceptual backdrop to mirror the empirical material. Through the use of the teachers’ and the students’ statements we describe what characterizes teaching practices today. Our analyses show the emergence of what we have called hybrid practices. These are practices in which the textbook has lost its position as the ultimate source of knowledge. The implication is that teachers are faced with new requirements both to assist students in assessing the credibility of the Internet-based resources, and to organize teaching in relation to the threat posed by activities that involve resources that may not be authoritative. We find that teachers respond differently to this trend, but a tendency seems to be that they develop tasks and activities tailor-made for their students, and increasingly become designers of educational activities.Key words: teacher, multiple resources, textbook, Internet

Abstract:
Pest profile of Amaranthus hybridus was recorded in a single organic agro-ecosystem in Southwestern Nigeria between November-December in 2016 and January-February 2017, during the dry season. Activities of different pests were monitored to identify those responsible for the most significant damage. Vegetable oil-based extracts of Alium sativum, Xylopia aethiopica and Eucalyptus globolus were prepared and applied on A. hybridus as protectants against herbivory by phytophagous insects and damage to foliage was assessed. Thereafter, the extracts were rated based on the mean percentage damage (MPD) recorded in different plots in relation to the treatments. A total of nine pests were recorded from three insect Orders namely, Orthoptera (62.5%), Coleoptera (12.5%) and Lepidoptera (25%) and they were grouped into Major, Minor or Occasional pests based on their activities. Two lepidopterans, Spoladea recurvalis and Psara basalis (Family: Crambidae) were responsible for the most significant damage. All the extracts reduced damage with a statistically significant difference (P<0.05) compared with the control. The MPD in X. aethiopica-, A. sativum- and E. globolus-treated plots and the control plots were 10.9%, 8%, 14% and 31.2% respectively when the amaranth was due for harvest in the first trial. The MPD to the amaranth in the treated plots during the second trial was between 13.6% and 16.3% when the harvest was due while the MPD in the control was 54.9%. The performances of E. globolus and X. aethiopica were comparable and they were relatively more effective in protecting A. hybridus against phytophagous pest attacks.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract in EnglishThis paper is an attempt to connect students’ information activities (to seek, to handle scientific information …) to their learning activities like text reading and the discursive processing of learning contents. Starting point is a, for e-learning typical linking of resources of different type on one learning platform, hereunder primary resources (scholarly articles and books in the first place) and secondary ones like bibliographical databases and other supporting material. The fact that these resources are organized in one virtual learning space is an important precondition that secondary materials, being as a rule associated with the library domain, can acquire the status as learning objects as well, on equal bar with traditional, primary documents. – On the background of virtual integration of e-materials the notion of “learning potential” is introduced, analyzed empirically in the form of classical topical search tools (thesauri and classification systems) realized in hybrid types of material, including both primary (for example, e-book packages) and secondary material (bibliographies). One practical consequence of this is that libraries do have the right competence to mediate these resources in virtual learning environments.

Abstract:
English: The Metaphysics of Climate Change. The World as Nature, Environment and CreationIn this paper examples of Christian eco-theology that respond to the prospects of major climate change are reviewed and contrasted with a recent eco-theological experiment launched by Bruno Latour. The aim of the article is to identify how theological and anthropological perspectives are interwoven and, moreover, to discuss how an anthropology of the metaphysics of climate change may develop an explorative repertoire of concepts. Although Latour’s project may fall between too many well established perspectives, it is suggested that the study of the metaphysics of climate change keep an eye open to the new hybrid forms of metaphysics; these forms appear in the many moral, practical and political questions that follow in the wake of the scientific findings of climate change and the experiences of people living in a changing environment. Key words: Climate change, metaphysics, Christianity, moral issues, nature

Abstract:
Diagnoses as governance hybrids: Diagnosis related groups in healthcareThis paper analyses how diagnoses comprise a central component in the governance infrastructure of health care. A view upon diagnoses as ‘governance hybrids’ enables a perspective that sees diagnoses simultaneously as designating patients’ diseases and their accountable value in the system of Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG). DRG is an internationally widespread system that categorises patients into groups that are clinically meaningful and have approximately the same average costs. Based on Science-Technology-Society studies (STS), the paper analyses how diagnoses transgress their clinical functions and are transformed into DRG in a governance infrastructure that connects the state, regions and hospital departments. The aim is to contribute to an understanding of diagnoses as infrastructuring and hence as both parts of an infrastructure and as performative elements with societal consequences. The paper presents analyses of (i) how diagnoses play a central role in a historical change in the power relations between clinicians and the state, (ii) how processing of diagnoses through DRG becomes an administrative matter requiring new special competences and functions, (iii) how diagnoses as part of DRG enables financial modeling and pursuance of governance goals that were not previously possible, and finally (iv) how the DRG system has spurred criticism due to its perceived effects as an incentive system. Lastly, the paper reflects upon how the DRG system can be regarded as an infrastructure that develops and constitutes society, because it gathers and creates mutually involving interactions between political, administrative and healthcare professional domains. Thus infrastructures such as DRG are not only tools, but also societal actors.

Abstract:
Abstract A description is provided for Stagonospora meliloti. Information is included on the disease caused by the organism, its transmission, geographical distribution, and hosts. HOSTS: Medicago arabica (spotted medick), M. lupulina (black medick), M. polymorpha, M. sativa (lucerne, alfalfa), Melilotus alba (white melilot), M. dentata, M. officinalis (yellow sweet clover), M. suaveolens, Trifolium alpestre, T. hybridum (alsike clover), T. repens (white clover, Dutch clover). Also on Ulex europaeus. DISEASE: Root rot, crown rot, stem blight and leaf spot. In alfalfa the taproot, crown, branches, and leaves are affected. The leaf spots are circular to irregular, light buff to greyish-white, 2-10 mm wide, sometimes involving the entire leaflet, with or without concentric bands, but always with a reddish-brown border. Usually pycnidia occur in the paler central areas of the spots. The visible symptoms on roots are smooth dark brown to black lesions which later dry, crack and become roughened. Beneath the surface the tissues turn reddish-brown to almost black. As the disease progresses slowly a dry rot develops followed by the appearance in the bark of a reddish colour which extends into the decaying wood rays. No new buds are formed and the plant eventually dies (18, 320). On species of Melilotus leaf spots have been reported as abundant in early spring and late in the fall in the U.S.A. In one variety of sweet clover only leaf spots have been reported abundant in the mid summer. The fungus enters roots through wounds. GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: Asia (Iran, Japan); Australasia & Oceania (Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, New Zealand) Europe (France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, U.K.); North America (Canada, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan; U.S.A., Alabama, California, Idaho, Maryland, Minnesota, Wisconsin); South America (Brazil). TRANSMISSION: The fungus is probably soil-borne and survives in fodder crop debris. Conidia produced within pycnidia on leaves are liberated in masses when water is present and water splash helps dissemination. Entry into roots is through wounds (18, 320).

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the progress of a class of third- and fourth-year undergraduate science students as they attempted to create a knowledge building community in a blended or hybrid science education class. The research sought to examine this process through analyses of the frequency of their note postings and responses, and through a social network analysis of their communication patterns for note reading. These data were automatically harvested by the Knowledge Forum knowledge building environment, and downloaded for later analysis. Contribution levels indicated that the frequency of note postings increased three-fold following the mid-term of the course causing maladaptive student work patterns to reduce information overload. As well, the disparity between high-frequency note posting students and low-frequency note posting students followed a linear curve with the ratio between the highest posting and lowest posting student to be 2.7:1. A similar pattern was found with regard to responses. A disparity was also found among the students in the number of postings read, with the highest note reading student reading six times the number of notes as the lowest note reading student. The social network analyses revealed evidence of community formation in the note reading network. Analysis showed both one-way and reciprocal interactions, indicating that the pathways needed for the transfer of complex information were present. Considering all the data together, while some communication patterns necessary for a knowledge building community were present, contribution patterns suggested that a true knowledge building community did not form, but that there was progress towards it.

Abstract:
This paper studies the effect of different extraction procedures such as soxhlet extraction using n-hexane, distillation method and supercritical extraction (SFE) on the physicochemical properties of garlic essential oil. The yield of garlic essential oil by soxhlet extraction, steam distillation and SFE-CO2 methods was approximately 0.441, 0.124 and 0.465 %, respectively. The results of the oil analysis by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry method show the presence of five major compounds, including diallyl sulfide, diallyl disulfide, 3-vinyl-1,2-dithiacyclohex-4-ene, 3-vinyl-1,2-dithiacyclohex-5-ene and diallyl trisulfide. The antioxidant activity of the essential oil obtained by the SFE-CO2 method was significantly higher than by the distillation method, but was lower than the acid ascorbic one.
