Aykut, Medeni, Andrzej Zawal, Yunus Esen, and Orhan Erman. "First record of larvae of the water mite Hydrachna processifera Piersig, 1895 from Turkey (Acari, Hydrachnidia, Hydrachnidae)." ZooKeys 738 (February 19, 2018): 89–96. https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.738.21021.

Full text
Abstract:
Larvae of water mite Hydrachna processifera Piersig, 1895 (Acari, Hydrachnidiae) were reported on diving beetles Dytiscus marginalis Linnaeus, 1758 (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae) from Turkey. The redescription of the larva was made. Earlier, the larva H. processifera was described as H. inermis, but it was subsequently synonymized with H. processifera. The larva of H. processifera is a new record for the Turkish fauna. All larvae of H. processifera were found on the mesosternum of the one specimens (prevalence = 16.7%).

Water mites represent the most diverse and abundant group of Arachnida in freshwater ecosystems, with about 6000 species described; however, it is estimated that this number represents only 30% of the total expected species. Despite having strong biotic interactions with their community and having the potential to be exceptional bioindicators, they are frequently excluded from studies of water quality or ecology, due to actual and perceived difficulties of taxonomic identification in this group. Conflicts of interest between the sexes over control of mating can be reflected in various aspects of morphology and behaviour, including structure of genitalia and copulation duration. In Arrenurus water mites (Hydrachnidia: Arrenuridae) there are two main patterns of sperm transfer that differ in degree of potential male control of sperm uptake by females. In some species, males are equipped with an intromittent organ (the ‘petiole’) that is used to forcefully insert sperm into the female reproductive tract. In others, males lack an intromittent organ and females appear to push sperm into th

Abstract:
Fifteen North American species of the water mite genus Kongsbergia, 11 of which are new to science, are described andallocated to the newly proposed reticulata-like species group. This group is characterized by synapomorphic contours ofthe dorsal shield in males in the form of symmetrical ridges, an elevated hump anteromedially and a marked depressionposteromedially that bears a medial ridge with the excretory pore at its posterior end. These species are further assigned to six subgroups diagnosed by various shared derived character states of males. Adults of K. reticulata Habeeb, 1956, K.reti

Sinaxonopsis Yi and Jin, 2012 was erected based on S. unicucrus from China. In this paper, one more species new to science, Sinaxonopsis hainanensis sp. nov. is described from China. Sinaxonopsis unicucrus Yi and Jin, 2012, is redescribed with more details, including information on the glandularia and patches of the large posterior dorsal plate, among others. Using scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, this work has clarified that the dorsoglandularia D4 do indeed have glands, and that the phenomenon of missing glands is absent on the dorsal plate of Sinaxonopsis, w

Abstract:
Larvae of eight species of Hydrachna found parasitizing water boatmen in central and western Canada are described, including seven representing new species. Hydrachna barri n.sp., Hydrachna trombida n.sp., and Hydrachna severnensis n.sp. have larvae similar to those of the European species Hydrachna skorikowi Piersig, while Hydrachna elongata n.sp. has larvae similar to those of the holarctic species Hydrachna cruenta Müller. Larvae of Hydrachna leptopalpa n.sp. bear superficial similarity to those of both H. elongata and H. severnensis. These resemblances appear to represent a general trend:
