The journal bearing is a critical machine element typically used to support rotating motion in high speed machinery. Through the generation of a hydrodynamic pressure in its thin lubricant film, which is usually in the order of 10-100μmthick depending on the diameter of the journal itself, the bearing is able to withstand large loads, both statically and dynamically, while having a very low rate of wear. It is of course essential that these components provide for a safe operation with as little wear and frictional losses as possible and it is therefore of great interest to develop simulation mo

An efficient and robust predictive technique has been developed for the analysis of dynamically loaded, flexible journal bearings using the finite element method. The work is in two parts. In the first part a fast predictive technique is developed for the analysis of dynamically loaded, rigid journal bearings. The finite element formulation of Reynolds equation is presented using both 3-node triangular and 8-node isoparamteric elements to model the lubricant film. The latter are shown to approximate the problem more closely using fewer nodal points and hence requiring fewer equations. The Gaus

96
Lubricant of hydrodynamic journal bearing substitutes the steel ball of ball bearing to support the shaft under rotating. The lubricant-film force, which is often defined by a set of linear stiffness and damping coefficients, plays a critical role in a hydrodynamic journal bearing. This study presents an experimental method to determine the stiffness and damping coefficients of herringbone grooved hydrodynamic journal bearing used in a cooling fan. In this work, we will discuss the static loading effects and rotating speed effects on the stiffness and damping

91
According to the Stokes microcontinuum theorem and the Christensen’s stochastic model, the main objective of this paper is to theoretically predict the combined influences of couple stresses and surface roughness on the lubrication performance of journal-bearing systems. To take account of both the presence of surface roughness of bearings and the couple stress effect due to the lubricant containing the polar suspensions, the generalized stochastic non-Newtonian Reynolds-type equation is derived and applied to evaluate the equilibrium solution of a short journal
