Abstract:
Parameter and state estimation for groundwater models within a coupled hydrogeophysical framework has become common in the last few years as it has been shown that such estimates are usually better than those from a single data inversion. Different approaches have been suggested in literature to combine the essentially two different modalities in order to obtain better estimates for groundwater models, and improve monitoring of processes such as solute transport. However, the coupled approaches usually come at a price of higher computational cost and difficulties in coupling the geophysical an

Groundwater provides a fundamental resource for modern life. Throughout the world, groundwater is managed by storing (recharging) it underground in natural aquifers for future withdrawal and consumptive use. Motivated by current limitations in our ability to monitor percolation and groundwater movement at the scale of a recharge facility, an effort to collect time-lapse gravity data was carried out at the Southern Avra Valley Storage

Abstract:
Near-surface sediments in the vadose zone play a fundamental role in the hydrologic system. The shallow vadose zone can act as a buffer to delay or attenuate surface contaminants before they reach the water table. It also acts as a temporary soil moisture reservoir for plant and atmospheric uptake, and regulates the seasonal groundwater recharge process. Over the past few decades, geophysical methods have received unprecedented attention as an effective vadose zone characterization tool offering a range of non-invasive to minimally invasive techniques with the capacity to provide detailed soil

Abstract:
Dayspring Children’s Village, which is located about 66 km northwest of Johannesburg, has been experiencing a chronic shortage of water for over 30 years. Five out of seven boreholes that are scattered within the school property are dry and there is evidence of contamination in one of the two wells that are producing water at two depths. The presence of bluegum (Eucalyptus globulus) trees is suspected to be the principal cause for the depletion of the aquifer(s) because of their documented high rate of transpiration. The purpose of this project is to determine the complex interaction between t

Abstract:
Hydrogeological uniqueness and chemical-physical peculiarities guide the contamination dynamics and decontamination mechanisms in the environmental arena. The experimental work carried out in 3 polluted sites in Italy, exhibiting different geological and contamination contexts, emphasized the contribution of the multitemporal and multidisciplinary geodatabase, which was created for the integrated management, representation, and analysis of different data, to reach a high-resolution characterization of underground geological heterogeneities, aquifers, and contaminated areas. The research aims

Abstract:
This hydrogeophysical field experiment evaluated the ability of high frequency (450 & 900 MHz) ground penetrating radar (GPR) to characterize the release of gasoline over an annual cycle of in situ conditions. In August 2008, 200 liters of E10 gasoline were released into the unconfined sand aquifer at CFB Borden. The 900 MHz profiling clearly shows the development of shallow (i.e., above 10 ns) high reflectivity in the vicinity of the trench immediately after the release. Additional lateral extension of high reflectivity zone was observed over the following 20 days until the seasonal water
