This three part study attempted to enhance our understanding of vegetation change and its potential effects on ecohydrology in drylands. The first study developed a method to measure the velocity of shallow overland flow. Under rainfall simulation, dye tracers were applied to runoff and photographed to calculate mean surface velocity. This research has developed a method for estimating hydraulic roughness coefficients for overland flow models in a dynamic approach, to more effectively simulate runoff on natural, agricultural and urban slopes. The hydraulic roughness coefficients are then generated with a series of neural networks. A sealed double ring infiltrometer (SDRI) was used at Page Ranch, Arizona to measure saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat in a test clay pad, as well as to characterize preferential flow and transport mechanisms. Ksat varied from 3.5 x 10⁻⁹ to 2.2 x 10⁻¹⁰ cm/sec depending on treatment of matric potential at the wetting front. These in-situ Ksat values were about one order of magnitude less than the laboratory values that ranged from 10⁻⁷ to 10⁻⁹ cm/sec. A hydrological modelling effort using MODFLOW was undertaken in order to determine the relative importance of some of the factors influencing hydraulic gradient reversals in peatlands. Model domains were of two types, large raised bog type (LRBT) and kettle bog type (KBT), and were made to undergo various levels of meteorological forcing (water deficit).
