Abstract:
When analysing the etymological layers of Hungarian river names, it becomes soon clear that loan names make up a much larger group than in the group of settlement names, for instance. This fact can be due to the phenomenon that in the case of hydronyms, name-giving and name-usage is driven mainly by communicative needs, while other (e. g. socio-cultural or political) factors only rarely influence name-giving. In my paper, it was my aim to provide an etymological typology of Hungarian hydronyms from the Árpád-era (896 –1350). It seems to be justified to choose the Hungarian hydronyms of the Árpád-era as the corpus of my investigation, for the country was strongly multilingual and multiethnic in this period of time (Hungarian, Slavic, German, Turkish), which also has an effect on the system of water names. The survey of the linguistic layers of river names shows that largely the same semantic content appears in river names originating from different languages. The semantic types appearing in river names belong to the so-called panchronistic feature of the hydronym system, in other words, they show signs of universal human thinking.

King, Jacob. "Analytical tools for toponymy : their application to Scottish hydronymy." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/3020.

Full text
Abstract:
It has long been observed that there is a correlation between the physical qualities of a watercourse and the linguistic qualities of its name; for instance, of two river-names, one having the linguistic quality of river as its generic element, and one having burn, one would expect the river to be the longer of the two. Until now, a phenomenon such as this had never been formally quantified. The primary focus of this thesis is to create, within a Scottish context, a methodology for elucidating the relationship between various qualities of hydronyms and the qualities of the watercourses they represent. The area of study includes every catchment area which falls into the sea from the River Forth, round the east coast of Scotland, up to and including the Spey; also included is the east side of the River Leven / Loch Lomond catchment area. The linguistic strata investigated are: Early Celtic, P-Celtic, Gaelic and Scots. In the first half of the introduction scholarly approaches to toponymy are discussed, in a Scottish and hydronymic context, from the inception of toponymy as a discipline up to the present day; the capabilities and limitations of these approaches are taken into consideration. In the second half the approaches taken in this thesis are outlined. The second chapter explains and justifies in more detail the methodology and calculus used in this thesis. The subsequent chapters examine the following linguistic components of a hydronym: generic elements, linguistic strata, semantics and phonological overlay. In each of these chapters the methodology is harnessed as an analytical tool to generate new findings for hydronymic research. The conclusion consists of a summary of the findings and a review of the performance of the calculus. It emerges that these analytical tools are of use to the field of toponymy in two ways. Firstly, they formalise and challenge previously unquantified statements made in the field of toponymy. Secondly, they elucidate hitherto unnoticed phenomena. It is suggested that in the future this methodology be applied to other datasets (particularly hill-names) and to other regions in Scotland and the world at large.

Abstract:
Hydronomy in brittany is clearly marked by three successive linguistic strata : a pre-celtic strata mainly typical of Indo-European that can be found elsewhere in europe, even in the traditional Brittonic sphere. A strata called continental Celtic and a Brittonic strata. It is often difficult to distinguish between these three strata and this difficulty corroborates, by the way, a linguistic link. Many pre-celtic roots can be found in continental Celtic which has too some similarities with Brittonic. The study of hydronomic items in modern Breton shows there is something common with the other Brittonic countries (Wales and Cornwall), and even with Gaelic countries (Ireland and Scotland)

The occupation of determined physical space by the human being and the need of localization in the geographic space perform that the man names spaces, ensuring his survival. So, by means of toponymic studies, knowledge which composes the Onomastic, it is verified the relationship established between the naming and culture and the history. The Toponymy occupies it studies in the names of places, cities, villages etc., besides of geographical elements. The research approaches the toponymy from the Brazilian State of Maranhão, specially focused in the hydronymia from indigenous origin related to the region comprised for the North Mesoregion from Maranhão that is located inside the hidrographic region of the western northest ocidental. This area, also known as Frente Litorânea de expansão do espaço maranhense, represents a dense water network (rivers, lakes, lagoons, streams, igarapes, swamps) that allowed/allows the displacement and the survival of the man in the Maranhão territory, as integrant part of the territory which belonged, in the eighteenth century, to the Maranhão Colonial State which possessed an indigenous population composed by 30 peoples, approximately 250.000 individuals, being one of the Brazilian centers with a huge density of indigenous speaks which belongs to two language trunks – Macro-jê and Tupi-Guarani or Macro-Tupi. Currently, Maranhão has an indigenous self-declared population of 37,272 individuals (IBGE, 2010). Considering this reality, we aim to delineate general trends of the Maranhão hydronymy, with emphasis on the names of indigenous origin that fall within the area delimited for this study. For collecting the data, we performed na indirect research in the public collection, intending to collect old maps, besides of research in documents and official sites, for the search of current maps. To the achievement of the corpus, it was realized the survey of: (i) the whole hydronymia of the mesoregion from the North of Maranhão, by means of current maps from IBGE and (ii) hydronymia in maps from the territoty of Maranhão from seventeenth, eihteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries and in works of chroniclers as Claude d’Abbeville, Yves d’Évreux and Frei Francisco de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres Maranhão The studies of Dauzat (1926), Vasconcelos (1931), Dick (1990, 1992, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2007), Isquerdo (2006, 2009, 2011), Seabra (2006, 2008, 2012), Isquerdo e Seabra (2010), Rosselló i Verger (2010) and Mujika Ulazia (2010) based this research. With this material we constitute the corpus of the research with: (i) current maps that are inserted in six microregions and total 60 municipalities in Maranhão and correspond to a total of 823 hydrographies, of which 233 are of indigenous origin (more specifically Tupi - LT), 551 (NE), and (ii) ancient maps whose data reveal a considerable indigenous presence in the Maranhão hydronymy of the region investigated. Some rather emblematic examples can be noticed in Itapecuru-Mirim, Icatu, Pindaré and Mearim. The data presented the phytotopyms and zootopony taxa of physical nature as the most recurrents, so that the influence of the environment (vegetables and animals) was significant on the nomination of the hydronymies collected. According to the data, it was possible to understand the relationship that the man establishes with the language, culture and environment, since the toponym, as a part of the lexicon of a language, reflects values and beliefs of a linguistic community.

Viswanathan, Vinodh Kumar. "Dynamic model for small-capacity ammonia-water absorption chiller." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/48939.

Full text
Abstract:
Optimization of the performance of absorption systems during transient operations such as start-up and shut-down is particularly important for small-capacity chillers and heat pumps to minimize lifecycle costs. Dynamic models in the literature have been used to study responses to step changes in a single parameter, but more complex processes such as system start-up have not been studied in detail. A robust system-level model for simulating the transient behavior of an absorption chiller is developed here. Individual heat and mass exchangers are modeled using detailed segmental models. The UA-values and thermal masses of heat exchangers used in the model are representative of a practical operational chiller. Thermal masses of the heat exchangers and energy storage in the heat exchanging fluids are accounted for to achieve realistic transient simulation of the heat transfer processes in the chiller. The pressure drop due to fluid flow across the heat exchangers is considered negligible in comparison to the pressure difference between the high- and low-side components (~ 1.5 MPa). In components with significant mass transfer effects, reduced-order models are employed to decrease computational costs while also maintaining accurate system response. Mass and species storage in the cycle are modeled using storage devices. The storage devices account for expansion and contraction of the refrigerant and solution in the cycle as the system goes through start-up, shut-down, and other transient events. A counterflow falling film desorber model is employed to account for the heat and mass transfer interactions between the liquid and vapor phases, inside the desorber. The liquid film flows down counter to the rising vapor, thereby exchanging heat with the counterflowing heated coupling fluid. A segmented model is used to account for these processes, and a solver is developed for performing rapid iteration and quick estimation of unknown vapor and liquid states at the outlet of each segment of the desorber. Other components such as the rectifier, expansion valves and solution pump are modeled as quasi-steady devices. System start-up is simulated from ambient conditions, and the coupling fluid temperatures are assumed to start up to their steady-state values within the first 90 s of simulation. It is observed that the system attains steady-state in approximately 550 s. The evaporator cooling duty and COP of the chiller during steady-state are observed to be 3.41 kW and 0.60, respectively. Steady-state parameters such as flow rates, heat transfer rates and concentrations are found to match closely with results from simulations using corresponding steady-state models. Several control responses are investigated using this dynamic simulation model. System responses to step changes in the desorber coupling fluid temperature and flow rate, solution pumping rate, and valve setting are used to study the effects of several control strategies on system behavior. Results from this analysis can be used to optimize start-up and steady state performances. The model can also be used for devising and testing control strategies in commercial applications.

Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng (Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
This study evaluates the performance characteristics of a power plant incorporating a steam turbine and a direct air-cooled dry/wet condenser operating at different ambient temperatures. The proposed cooling system uses existing A-frame air-cooled condenser (ACC) technology and through the introduction of a hybrid (dry/wet) dephiegmator achieves measurable enhancement in cooling performance when temperatures are high. In order to determine the thermal-flow performance characteristics of the wet section of the dephlegmator, tests are conducted on an evaporative cooler. From the experimental results, correlations for the water film heat transfer coefficient, air-water mass transfer coefficient and the air-side pressure drop over a deluged tube bundle are developed. During periods of high ambient temperatures the hybrid (dry/wet) condenser operating in a wet mode can achieve the same increased turbine performance as an oversized air-cooled condenser or an air-cooled condenser rith adiabatic cooling (spray cooling) of the inlet air at a considerably lower cost. For the same turbine power output the water consumed by an air-cooled condenser incorporating a hybrid (dry/wet) dephlegmator is at least 20% less than an air- cooled condenser with adiabatic cooling of the inlet air.

Abstract:

Obuladinne, Sai Sujith. "Two-Phase Spray Cooling with Water/2-Propanol Binary Mixtures for High Heat Flux Focal Source." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2016. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc955089/.

Full text
Abstract:
Two-phase spray cooling has been an emerging thermal management technique offering high heat transfer coefficients and critical heat flux levels, near-uniform surface temperatures, and efficient coolant usage that enables to design of compact and lightweight systems. Due to these capabilities, spray cooling is a promising approach for high heat flux applications in computing, power electronics, and optics. Two-phase spray cooling inherently depends on saturation temperature-pressure relationships of the working fluid to take advantage of high heat transfer rates associated with liquid-vapor phase change. When a certain application requires strict temperature and/or pressure conditions, thermo-physical properties of the working fluid play a critical role in attaining proper efficiency, reliability, or packaging structure. However, some of the commonly used single-component working fluids have relatively poor properties and heat transfer performance. For example, water is the best coolant in terms of properties, yet in certain applications where the system operates at low temperature ambient, it cannot be implemented due to freezing risk. The common solution for this problem is to use the antifreeze mixtures (binary mixtures of water and alcohol) to reduce the freezing point. In such cases, utilizing binary mixtures to tune working fluid properties becomes an alternative approach. This study has two main objectives; (1) to experimentally investigate the two-phase spray cooling performance of water/2-propanol binary mixture, and (2) to numerically investigate the performance of an advanced heat spreader featuring high and directional thermal conductivity materials for high heat flux focal sources. The first part of the study involves experimental characterization of heat transfer performance. Tests are conducted on a small-scale, closed loop spray cooling system featuring a pressure atomized spray nozzle. The test section, made of copper, measures 10 mm x 10 mm x 2 mm with a plain, smooth surface. A cylindrical copper block, with a matching size square protrusion attached onto the back side of the test section, generates heat using cartridge heaters and simulates high heat flux source. Embedded thermocouples are used to determine the spray surface temperature. The working fluid, water/alcohol mixture, has various concentration levels of 2-propanol by mass fraction 0.0 (pure water), 0.25, 0.50, 0.879 (azeotrope) and 1.0 (pure alcohol)), representing both non-azeotropic and azeotropic cases. Spray cooling tests are performed with a constant flow rate of 5.6 ml/cm².s at subcooled temperatures (~20oC) and atmospheric pressure. Experimental procedure involves controlling the heat flux in increasing steps, and recording the corresponding steady-state temperatures to obtain cooling curves in the form of surface superheat vs. heat flux. The second part of the study investigates an advanced heat spreader design for thermal management of a high heat flux focal source. The heat spreader comprises of three layers: a copper layer that interfaces with the heat source, a high and directional thermal conductivity material (such as CVD diamond and Pyrolytic graphite) layer, and another copper layer that is exposed to two-phase spray cooling. The analysis applies various heat fluxes on the heat source side and the experimentally obtained heat transfer coefficients on the spray side of the spreader design to determine the temperature and heat flux distributions, and examine the potential capabilities of this configuration.

Mohammed, Awaizulla Shareef. "Investigation of Immersion Cooled ARM-Based Computer Clusters for Low-Cost, High-Performance Computing." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2017. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1011866/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate performance of ARM-based computer clusters using two-phase immersion cooling approach, and demonstrate its potential benefits over the air-based natural and forced convection approaches. ARM-based clusters were created using Raspberry Pi model 2 and 3, a commodity-level, single-board computer. Immersion cooling mode utilized two types of dielectric liquids, HFE-7000 and HFE-7100. Experiments involved running benchmarking tests Sysbench high performance linpack (HPL), and the combination of both in order to quantify the key parameters of device junction temperature, frequency, execution time, computing performance, and energy consumption. Results indicated that the device core temperature has direct effects on the computing performance and energy consumption. In the reference, natural convection cooling mode, as the temperature raised, the cluster started to decease its operating frequency to save the internal cores from damage. This resulted in decline of computing performance and increase of execution time, further leading to increase of energy consumption. In more extreme cases, performance of the cluster dropped by 4X, while the energy consumption increased by 220%. This study therefore demonstrated that two-phase immersion cooling method with its near-isothermal, high heat transfer capability would enable fast, energy efficient, and reliable operation, particularly benefiting high performance computing applications where conventional air-based cooling methods would fail.

Abstract:
The main goal of our thesis is a lexicographic processing of names of watercourses in the Upper Lužnice (Ober Lainsitz) river basin. Due to its location on the borders of Czech and German speaking territories and gaps in Czech methodological approaches our thesis is based on sophisticated theories of German hydronomastics that reflect common etymological roots of European water names as well as of the Slovak ones that strive for modern international processing of hydronyms complying with uniformed, obligatory methodology of the lexicographic project Hydronymia Europaea. Water names that were excerpted mainly from archival and contemporary maps have undertaken semantic classification invented by V. Šmilauer and M. Frydrich regardless of the source language. Along with the verification of suitability of the foreign methodology adopted for Czech hydronyms the thesis makes partial advice on its innovation that could help make the using of the lexicon more user friendly.

Abstract:
Oronyms and Hydronyms in Protected Landscape Area Jizera Mountains (Jizerské hory) Václav Lábus Abstract: The main goal of the present Ph.D. thesis titled Oronyms and Hydronyms in the Protected Landscape Area Jizera Mountains (Jizerské hory) is the analysis of semantic and formal aspects of anoikonyms (minor place names) in the mentioned region. The thesis deals not only with contemporary names, but it also describes development of the regional anoikonymy from Middle Ages to the present times. Until 1945 the Jizera Mountains were a part of the so-called Sudetenland inhabited by German population; therefore, the thesis pays special attention to relations between Czech and German minor place names and to later processes of bohemization. In addition to the development of the anoikonymy, influenced by historical events, the thesis focuses on three typical aspects of the anoikonymical system of the Jizera Mountains: a/ variability (or onymical synonymy) from both synchronic and diachronic point of view; b/ the role of possessive motivation within onymic processes; c/ elements of local dialects in anoikonyms. A substantial part of the thesis is also the etymological interpretation as well as the detailed mapping of the development and changes in naming of major orographic and hydrographic objects.
