Abstract:
The term Nanoceramics is well known in the ceramic field for at least two decades. In this project a detailed study was performed on the synthesis of α-alumina nanopowders. High solids content nanoalumina suspensions were prepared and used to form green bodies using both wet and dry forming routes. The green bodies were then sintered using both conventional single and two-step sintering approaches. Synthesis: Two different synthesis methods, viz. precipitation and hydrothermal treatment, were used to synthesize fine α-alumina powders from aluminium chloride, ammonia solution and TEAH (Tetraeth

Hexaferrites are still a very important component of the permanent magnets market because of their low price combined with reasonably attractive magnetic properties. In such a context, any improvement of the magnet data would be of great importance. In recent years, work has been carried out on improving the magnetic properties by a combined substitution of La and Co into the Sr-ferrite composition. This improvement was largely associated with an increase of coercivity and the underlying magneto-crystalline anisotropy. The possibility of replacing Sr by La and the subsequent improvement of the

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD<br>Power generation in South Africa depends majorly on the combustion of coal and the increasing demand for energy due to industrialisation and population growth signifies the continuous consumption of coal. During this process, a by-product known as coal fly ash (CFA) is generated which poses several environmental issues. The common management of the waste involves the disposal of CFA in landfills or the direct disposal to open uncultured lands, thus contaminating water bodies by the leaching of constituent CFA metals and salts that render arable land uncultiva

Young, Michael I. "Synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles with different morphologies by wet chemistry routes." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2016. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/25368.

Abstract:
The objectives of this project were to synthesise semi-conducting ceramic nanoparticles including zinc oxide (ZnO) and aluminium doped zinc oxide (AZO) through a wet chemistry route to obtain nanoparticles with a controlled size and morphology. Wet chemistry methods (co-precipitation method and hydrothermal method) were used to synthesise ZnO and AZO particles. In the synthesis, various compounds and morphologies were synthesised. ZnO, Zn(OH)2 and unknown phases were co-precipitated, with only ZnO obtained following hydrothermal treatment. Morphologies ranging from platelets, flower-like, nano

Abstract:
This work explores the hydrothermal synthesis of LaFeO3 (LFO) nanorods with a high aspect ratio. Synthesis of rod shaped LFO is a stepping stone to the synthesis of strontium doped LFO (LSF) nanorods with high aspect ratio. These LSF rods can be used to structure and increase the area of dense LSF oxygen permeable membranes, which can be applied in the partial oxidation of methane for the production of synthesis gas. Obtaining a larger surface area can increase the oxygen transport through the membrane when the transport is limited by surface exchange reactions. Increasing the oxygen transport
