Inclusion compounds can be defined as those in which one type of molecule is able to enclose another molecule (usually smaller) within its structure, leaving the bonding systems of both components unchanged. The molecular network and the enclosed species are usually referred to as the "host" and "guest" respectively. The ability of four hydroxyl-containing molecules to form inclusion compounds was studied. The compounds tris(N-ռ-propyl-3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-pyridinonato) aluminum(III), -gallium(III), and -indium(III) and tris(N-ռ-butyl-3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-pyridinonato)aluminum(III), -gallium(III), and -indium(III) were synthesized. All six compounds were prepared via the metal template effect. They were characterized by IR, FAB-MS, ¹H NMR, ²⁷Al NMR, and elemental analysis. Three of the six complexes were studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. They formed trihydrates, unlike their N-methyl and N-ethyl analogues, which formed dodecahydrates. In this study a method was developed to identify and quantify platinum(II) complexes of the type [PtCl4-n(OH)n]2- and [PtCl4-n(H2O)n]2-n. Separation of the various species was achieved with the aid of a hyphenated reversed phase HPLC-ICP-MS technique coupled with an ion-pairing reagent, HMHDCl2. The adsorption of HMHD2+ onto a C-18 column was investigated by generating a series of breakthrough curves. Abstract:

Les composés organiques volatils oxygénés (COVOs) sont des espèces chimiques importantes de l’atmosphère. Ils incluent, par exemple, les alcools aliphatiques, les aldéhydes, les cétones et les acides organiques. Dans la troposphère libre, l’abondance des COVOs est plus importante que celle des hydrocarbures non méthaniques et leur réactivité globale avec OH est comparable avec celle du méthane. This study extends the work we have previously done by reporting on both gas-phase and particulate phase PCB concentrations in Chicago air as well as giving a first report on airborne OH-PCBs in Chicago. Gas phase PCB concentrations ranged from 43.1 pg/m³ to 2250 pg/m³, with an average concentration of 594 pg/m³ ± 445 pg/m³, and exhibited strong temporal trends. Particulate phase PCBs accounted on average for 4.3% of total PCBs in a sample.
