Full textOffshore installations are the industrial structures and equipments at sea that are used for marine oil exploration and production. All those installations present a risk for the workers and for the environment. That is why the Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) regulations are so important for the operators in charge of those installations. This study looks at the sources of obligations for the offshore installations and in particular we will explain which ones prevail over the others : international, regional and national ones. It also establishes the differences and similarities between safety regulations on offshore installations and protection of the environment. And finally we will address the consequences on operator's liability and if there is a solution to simplify regulations from an international point of view

Full textDelivery and handling of putrescible organic matter in biomethanization facilities produce bioaerosols, suspending microorganisms found in the raw matter, which may vary in nature and decomposition state. Workers in biomethanization facilities are exposed to these microorganisms, some of which may be harmful to their health. Nowadays, biomethanization is used as a method of waste processing and valorization. To our knowledge, there is no study mentioning the presence of bioaerosols in these emerging facilities in the Quebec province. Consequently, there is a need to study the air of biomethanization facilities to better understand its composition in microorganisms. Two facilities were visited once in summer and once in winter for a total of 4 visits. The goal was to consider the seasonal variation of working conditions. Stationary sampling was performed with six devices used for culture of airborne microorganisms and molecular analysis. Bacterial and fungal concentrations above the IRSST recommendations were observed. qPCR lead to the detection of some potentially pathogenic microorganisms, such as Saccharopolyspora rectivirgula, Legionella spp. and Mycobacterium spp. The endotoxin concentrations were below the recommended value. Finally, a better view of bacterial diversity was possible due to next-generation sequencing. Because biomethanization is an emerging waste treatment technology, this study brings a major contribution to the literature. It may also lead to recommendations for the protection of workers in this activity area.

Full textThis thesis objective is to review the situation, concerning the state of health at work at the beginning of the twenty-first century in France. The matter of the study is more particularly about the health of workers in companies but also about people who live near industrial plants. . . The emphasis is put on the methodology followed, which combines the contribution of law (work, social,. . . ), economy, history and sociology. . . This thesis demonstrates through time and space, the confrontation between health at work and environment. It also shows how the law and other elements have allowed a parallel and then a collaboration. Owever the gap is Hobvious at the end of the 19th Century (with the Industrial Revolution), and the environment law which appears approximatively a century later (in 1970, with the economical crisis). This thesis is illustrated from an empirical point of view by a study realised inside Dunkerque area, whose aim was identify the consequences of air pollution on individuals. The research was led so as to retranscribe as well as possible the feeling or the disorders experienced by the people pollued, and then to translate them, during the analysis on effects on health, and also on social economic effects

Full textIn France, modern and contemporary societies have for long been set aside from bioarchaeological concerns. Recently, the excavations of two large cemeteries in Provence have provided the opportunity to analyze health status during a critical period : the transition between the Ancien Régime and the Industrial Revolution. This study aims to determine whether these changes occuring between the 16th and the 20th century, led to significant changes in health status. Our osteoarchaeological sample includes 1289 individuals from two complementary series : Saint-Jacques cemetery in La Ciotat and the cemetery Les Crottes in Marseille. The approach adopted combines a paleoepidemiological and biocutural approach, in which biological data are contextualised through numerous historical sources available for these recent periods. The examination of dental pathologies, stress markers and metabolic diseases showed many similarities between our two samples. The differences do exist, but they are much more subtle than assumed and mainly illustrated the increase of carious lesions and dental enamel hypoplasia. The former seem to indicate changes in diet with the introduction of new foodstuffs and manufacturing processes that accompanied the Industrial Revolution. The latter could reflect the increase in early stress, perhaps due to new feeding practices surrounding weaning and breastfeeding, or a general poorly diversified diet. Finally, the increasing number of periods of stress could suggest a noxious sanitary and infectious environment, despite scientific and medical advancements, which would have a real impact from the 20th century onwards

Full textThe current industrial world is facing frequent changes, which are sometimes abrupt. This is due to the scientific and technical progresses and increasingly challenging needs of customers. This market variability often creates unstable work organisations and arduousness and stress factors. Therefore, manufacturers are developing methods to control and improve their processes for greater performance. Lean management and ergonomics approach are two of these approaches. But they seem not having totally demonstrated their efficiency for tackling this double issue that is industrial performance and health-at-work. The notion of global performance, which encompasses this double issue, is complex and not so easy for enterprise to manage. Thus, this research project aims at proposing a methodology for transforming organisation and controlling global performance, on the basis of a synergy between the Lean Manufacturing, the ergonomics approach and the ergomotrice one. It aims at guiding an enterprise on a progress journey built upon an evaluation process of the organisation maturity level. The Maturity Matrix in its design takes into account the main principles of the Lean Manufacturing, the ergonomics approach and the ergomotrice one. We propose a framework for change management inside a rhythmed control process allowing to transform an industrial organisation in order to achieve the enterprise strategic vision of global performance. All these research works have been tested in several companies that have been assisted by Valessentia, and more particularly inside Jean-Louis Amiotte

Full textDespite the growth of studies on the link between indoor work environment quality and employee productivity, the impacts of connectedness to nature within offices on employee well-being, satisfaction, and productivity remain less studied. The objective of the study is to conduct a scoping review of available research published between 2015 and 2020 on the impacts of biophilia and connectedness to nature on employee productivity and well-being as well as corporate strategies. The analysis of the studies shows that more and more companies are highlighting the integration of natural elements in the workspace as well as their benefits in terms of psychological connection and employee behaviors. In addition, there are differences in the spatial quality of the workspace, particularly between traditional green offices and coworking offices. This study highlights the need for companies to develop natural outdoor workspaces in addition to traditional green offices. This work also highlights the practical implications of the impacts of employee connection to nature for occupants, green office designers, and managers alike. The discussion also highlights the impact of the pandemic crisis on workspace design, ecology, and corporate budgets.

Full textThis thesis investigates the extent to which the production of research in the field of occupational safety and health (OSH) in Canada, and its transfer mechanisms, support the use of research results. To achieve this goal a conceptual framework was conceived that emphasizes the importance of the knowledge production mode. The framework was then used to investigate and measure the transfer of knowledge and its determinants with questionnaire filled out by 217 researchers in the field of OSH. A first level of analysis made it possible to describe the profile of the different researchers and the characteristics of their research tasks. An association between the professional deaths and lesions compensated in Canada and the types of industries, populations and nature of lesions studied by researchers, was carried out. In a second level of analysis, we conducted a principal components factor analysis (PCFA) that revealed the organization of items of knowledge transfer in three factors (diffusion, active dissemination and implementation). These factors represent the mechanisms used by researchers to transfer research knowledge to managers, professionals and practitioners. To supplement this portrait, bivariated analyses of the transfer mechanisms taking into consideration mode of knowledge production, the statute, the discipline and the type of institution of the researchers, were done. Then, a third level of analyses was carried out to identify and hierarchyse the factors associated with the transfer mechanisms. With this, we developed an ordinary least squares model and applied it to the three transfer mechanisms (diffusion, active dissemination and implementation). In summary, the application of our model to the three transfer mechanism demonstrates many factors significantly associated with the three mechanisms. However, only one independent variable is associated with each of the three mechanisms, that is to use mode II as knowledge production mode, in comparison to mode I. Also, in general, the disciplines are rarely associated with transfer mechanisms. Thus, the researchers in OHS, no matter what their discipline is, seem to constitute a rather homogeneous unit.

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to study the exchange of knowledge between cities and the interactions between the forces interested in the transformation of the urban environment, using the case of sanitary engineering as a starting point. This field which was intended to provide pure water to city dwellers, as well as purifying waste, rose at the end of the nineteenth century thanks to numerous phenomena of knowledge and data circulation, among different networks linking municipal engineers and officials, sanitary inspectors, national experts and inventors.A careful study of the decision-making processes, from the documentation phase to the opening ceremonies of new facilities, enables us to perceive the complex path through which modern technology penetrated cities. In France, although the attitude of the State towards hygiene issues evolved, the general frame of the intervention of public authorities remained stable during the first half of the 20th century. The circulation of information and knowledge about sanitary engineering highlights an interesting process of innovation diffusion, which worked inside the French urban network without any strong hierarchical pattern but in a rather horizontal way. A transnational dimension appears in this process which underlines the ability of local governments to implement technological facilities in a context of relatively weak State expertise and intervention

Full textThis thesis attempts to analyze both the scientific actions and the social effects of the French Industrial Hygiene Movement in the second half of the Nineteenth Century. In parts one and two, the construction of industrial and occupational hygiene as a new scientific discipline from middle of the century is examined. Occupational hygiene appears as a problematical field of research: neither purely medical nor technical, it calls for the difficult cooperation of several scientific disciplines. The third part presents a new approach in analyzing the conditions of industrialization. Considering workers as well as company owners, it deals with representations of pain at work, and the various behaviours occurring in the face of occupational hazards. The question tackled is that of understanding if the industrial hygienists achieved changes in work conditions as they claimed to have done. The results as the workshop’s level remain variable at the end of the century, according to cultural and economic factors, technical conditions as well as the activity of unions

Full textThis thesis focuses on the object and scope of application of the Act respecting occupational health and safety (AOHS). It maintains that the purpose of this Quebec legislation is to protect not only workers, but also: 1) other persons at work and 2) persons other than those at work, namely the public at large. In this sense, the stated object of the AOHS, as worded in section 2, is incomplete and does not encompass its entire purpose. Moreover, this thesis re-examines the limits of the scope of application of the AOHS. With regard to the individual dimension of the Act, this thesis challenges the idea that the presence of workers is essential to its application. As for its territorial dimension, this thesis reiterates the idea that the AOHS goes beyond the strictly defined workplace itself and extends to any place where work is carried out. Finally, from the Act there emerges a new circumstantial dimension – based on work activity – that transcends the territorial and individual dimensions, but is not well defined and not fully reflected in the Act. However, this dimension would appear to further foster the achievement of the objectives of the AOHS. These findings regarding the object and scope of application are based, first of all, on an examination of the entire text of the Act and its attendant regulations. They are also explained by the origins and history of laws relating to occupational health and safety. Although these findings are supported by the fundamental rights stated in national and international labour law instruments and, more broadly, in legislation relating to the right to life and to personal security and inviolability, they nevertheless clash with the wording of many of the provisions of the AOHS, which refer strictly to “workers.” The rules of interpretation and the principles of administrative law cannot fully remedy this situation. Ultimately, this thesis invites the legislator to amend the AOHS to improve the protection of the health, safety and physical well-being of all individuals in the achievement of work activities, which is the fundamental object of this Act.

Full textIn this research, we raised the question if Quebec unions were able to act on the immediate work environment during the implementation of lean projects. So we tried to find out which factors of organizational work allow union members to make a lean project, an enabling organization? Our research explored three elements: 1) characterize the outcome of lean projects compared with an enabling organization, 2) characterize the organizational context of lean projects and identify the factors that influence the organizational work during the project and finally 3) characterize the organizational work of the trade union actors during the project and to highlight the factors which conduct to an enabling organization during the project. This exploratory research has been based on the method of multiple case studies. Five cases of lean projects have been documented in a single central union (CSN) by fifteen individual interviews and documents collection. For each project, at least two players were interviewed and documents associated with the project were collected, whenever it was possible. We were able to identify several factors that conduct to an enabling organization: (a) at the external of the business organization level: the act of making available a central union actor in the project with lean’s knowledge, and the presence of an external mediator in case of blocking; (b) at the business organization level: the construction of paritarism and actions and decisions of local officials regarding their participation; and (c) at the production and labour organization level: a way to use value stream mapping, actions and decisions to organize the performance indicators, the close supervision rules, the vertical and horizontal cooperation, as well as to organize the consideration of employees knowledge. These factors are all guidelines of action for trade unions and consultants who spread out lean projects.

"Multiple exposures and co-exposures to chemical neurotoxic agents and intense physical constraints among male blue-collar workers in the agriculture, manufacturing, and construction sectors in France Multiple Exposures and Co-exposures to Occupational Hazards among Agricultural Workers: A Systematic Review of Observational Studies." Thesis, Angers, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017ANGE0065.
Full textA wide range of studies has demonstrated the relationships between diverse types of occupational exposures, taken independently, and adverse health outcomes. Yet, the prevalence and impact of multiple occupational exposures or co-exposures have rarely been explored despite the ubiquity of numerous hazards. Therefore, multiple occupational exposures/co-exposures and their impact on health are considered as a major challenge of epidemiologic research inthe occupational health and safety area. A systematic review concerning the agriculture sector was carried out based on the titles, abstracts and fulltexts screening of 36,404 initial articles from 5 well-known databases and 2 North American complementary sources. The findings from the 15 papers finally included suggested that multiple chemical exposures were significantly associated with an increased risk of respiratory diseases, cancers, DNA and cytogenetic damages. Multiple physical exposures were shown to increase the risk of hearing loss while co-exposures to physical and biomechanical hazardswere associated with an increased risk of musculoskeletal disorders. However, no studies included in the systematic review explored either occupational co-exposures to both physical and chemical factors or occupational co-exposures to biomechanical and chemical factors. The results described in the systematic review raised the necessity to conduct further studies multipleoccupational exposures and co-exposures among workers. Therefore, multiple occupational exposures and coexposures’ prevalences to chemical neurotoxic agents (CNAs) and intense physical constraints (IPCs) were examined among 5,587 French male blue-collar workers (BCWs) in the agriculture, manufacturing, and construction sectors based on the cross-sectional and national SUMER 2010 survey. About 6% of male BCWs were co-exposed to IPCs andCNAs in these three sectors (p=0.29). Multiple exposures to IPCs was predominantly observed (35%, p <0.001), while multiple exposures to CNAs was much lower (2%, p <0.001) among male BCWs in three sectors. The findings highlight the necessity to carry out further studies on multiple occupational exposures/coexposures to diverse hazards and their impact on workers’ health. These further researches are required to improve occupational safety and the efficiency of health care surveillance and occupational disease prevention

Full textWhy are public spaces – streets, hospitals, offices, etc. – cleaned ? Understanding the stakes of cleanliness implies studying the way involved parties view it, both in their intentions and their implementation. During the thirty years following the Second World War, rising standards of living reduced the sanitary stakes of cleanliness, while growing aspirations forwell-being shaped the uses of space. Technological innovation fueled the growth of a new sector, industrial cleaning, as did the 1970s slump, which made more and more firms externalize their cleaning work to drop costs. The following decade saw an overhaul in the cleaning services of public institutions such as the Ville de Paris and the parisian authority for transportation (RATP). They made cleaning more ostentatious as dirtyness came to represent a lack of control over space. They increasingly involved the public in the effort towards cleanliness and in the definition of requirements, to fulfill quality expectations without unnecessary spending. Industrial cleaning also cared about quality in the face of tough competition and demanding customers. This resulted in performance contracting and new evaluation tools, reflected in regulation in the1990s.Many attempts have been made to better the condition of a disproportionately female, foreign-born – especially in the Paris region – and unskilled workers, in precarious employment. In the 1980s they were successful for public sector garbage collectors in Paris, but have been challenged since then. Obstacles to the professionalization of cleaning workers include the economic situation of their industry and the enduring perception that they aredoing a “dirty job”

Full textThis research is positioned in the Industrial Engineering field and it is dealing with the human factor integration in the design process of products and associated work systems. Using the knowledge, methods and specific tools of two disciplines (Engineering Science and Social and Human Science), the research proposes a human-centered design methodology that is allowing a better “Ergonomics Analyse – Products Design” articulation, from the very beginning to last stage of process. At the heart of this methodology there is a numerical simulation method of Gestural and Posturales Activities of Human that is possible with the support of the numerical mannequins which are the 3D human models. So, this method and the MANERCOS associated tool permit us to propose a new way to design and re-design the products/work systems which allows the innovation by a better consideration of the human characteristics: anthropometrical, biomechanical etc… By the application to the work systems design, we show particularly how the proposed methodology allows to detect and to estimate some of the risk factors of Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WRMD) resulting from the working conditions, the tools and workplaces design etc. , and how to contribute in this case to the prevention of the professional diseases in constant increase for several years. More specific, the proposed methodology bring together all the actors of design process to define, to test, to estimate and to validate the numerical mock-ups of future work systems, adapted to the future operators, in terms of health, safety, comfort and efficiency at work. So we reveal capacities and the effectiveness of the MANERCOS tool, but we also show the way to evolve it in order to make better the "ergonomist - designer" cooperation within the design process. Particularly, the new features brought to this numerical mannequin, coupled at a measure tool of movements and efforts (CAPTIV tool) and associated in prospect at a virtual reality platform, will permit a better evaluation and prediction of the risks of Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WRMD), by taking into account the Gestural and Posturales Activities

Full textThis thesis aims at exploring to what extent globalization, through its diversecomponents, impacts the health of European workers. In a first part, we expose the socio-economicconsequences of this multi-faceted phenomenon. In a second part, we show that internationalcompetition, one of the essential components of globalization, is a risk factor for non-skilledworkers. Nevertheless, individual and organizational factors are the most likely to explain mentaland physical disorders prevalence in the population as a whole. Globalization also implies newpractices linked to firms’ internationalization strategy, another component of globalization. Weunderline that workers must acquire the skills to stay attractive in a constantly changing worldand they do not find much support in their companies. In a third part, we show that globalizationenhances the surge of the service sector in industrialized countries. In addition, the leanmanagement is implemented in those sectors and competitive pressure increases. These changesimpact the way the work is performed. Within this context, the health of workers deterioratesbecause they are exposed to changing risk factors, among them: intense of work related tointerpersonal relationships. Finally, we find that the Corporate Social Responsibility comes as ananswer to improve workers’ health and as a consequence, firms’ social and financial performance
