Abstract:
AbstractAs sociolinguistics continued to develop in the 1970s, members of the Council’s Committee on Sociolinguistics (1963–1979) reflected on the direction and intellectual impact of this emergent discipline. In this 1972 article, Dell Hymes, cochairman of the committee, describes several orientations toward the field among its practitioners, and argues for what he regarded as the most ambitious: a “socially constituted linguistics.” By this, Hymes meant a sociolinguistics that challenges linguistics’ core theoretical starting points of linguistic structure and grammar with a focus on the social meaning and functions of language in context. In relation to our “Sociolinguistic Frontiers” series, Hymes presciently argues that ultimately the field must address how inequality and language intersect, going “beyond means of speech and types of speech community to a concern with persons and social structure.”

Abstract:
Beginning with the proposal of the McEliece cryptosystem in 1978, code-based cryptography has positioned itself as one of main categories in post-quantum cryptography (PQC). To date, the algebraic security of certain variants of McEliece cryptosystems has been challenged many times, although some of the variants have remained secure. However, recent studies on code-based cryptography have focused on the side-channel resistance since previous studies have indicated that the existing algorithms were vulnerable to side-channel analysis. In this paper, we propose the first side-channel attack on the Hybrid McEliece Scheme (HyMES) using only a single power consumption trace. HyMES is a variant of the McEliece system that provides smaller keys, along with faster encryption and decryption speed. By exploiting joint distributions of nonlinear functions in the decryption process, we were able to recover the private key of HyMES. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work proposing a side-channel analysis based on a joint distribution of the leakages on the public-key system.

Abstract:
The poetry of Sumer, inscribed in cuneiform script on clay tablets dating from 2000 B.C., is considered humanity's earliest written literature. Hymns To Inanna is a three-movement, mixed media work based on adapted English translations from ancient Sumerian text. The text is sung by SATB choir and musically illustrated by harp, flutes, percussion, and computer-generated sound (on tape). My musical setting displays these hymns not as a reflection of antiquity but as a timeless expression of spiritual thought. Certain elements of the composition evoke associations with early culture and music. These components, however, are transformed or merged with musical characteristics of other eras, idioms, and forms thus representing a conceptual and stylistic "bridge" between past, present, and future.

Wilkinson, Richard William. "A history of "Hymns ancient and modern"." Thesis, University of Hull, 1985. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:8304.

Full text
Abstract:
When the first Edition was published in 1861, Hymns Ancient and Modern Was just one of many collections of hymns. However, it rapidly established itself as the most popular of all. The subject of this thesis is the way that the Proprietors reacted to this success by bringing out enlarged and revised editions until the publication of the New Standard Edition in 1983. The background and the compilation of the First Edition is only briefly touched upon (I) although some attempt will be made to analyse its characteristics. The first major episode to be covered in detail will be the 1904 Edition, in which the Proprietors made a radical attempt to revise and reform the Victorian book which had developed from the First Edition. This attempt was, by Hymns Ancient and Modern standards, a failure. This failure will be explained and analysed, and its effect on future policies of the Proprietors will be assessed. To a remarkable degree the Proprietors swung over to a cautious conservatism by further enlarging the Victorian book, in order to produce the Standard Edition of 1922. The imperative need for change, however, could not be resisted for ever, in particular when the challenge of other books such as the English Hymnal had to be faced. The result was Hymns Ancient and Modern Revised, published in 1950. This was a new book, but far more limited in its innovations than mi9ht have been the case. No such criticism could, however, be levelled against the two supplements, A Hundred Hymns for Today and More Hymns for Today which were published in 1969 and 1980. The thinking behind these radical publications and the excision of nearly half the hymns in Hymns Ancient and Modern Revised to form the New Standard Edition will be discussed. The role of such key personalities as Baker, Frere and Nicholson will be evaluated, likewise the deliberations of the present members of the Council of Hymns Ancient and Modern as they look to the future.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with the hymns in prose (or. XXXVII-XLVI) of Aelius Aristides, a second century A. D. Greek orator. Its purpose is to provide the foundation for a critical edition of them, offering a translation into French (the first one ever for the whole corpus), as well as critical notices and commentary. So defined, the corpus will then be subjected to an extensive interpretative synthesis. The first part of the thesis analyses the favoured status of prose hymns in this orator's career, the poetics they put to work, the way they are firmly anchored in Greco-Roman culture and society and the religious attitude they reveal. This paper intends above all to investigate religious rhetorical practice, but it is also concerned with how the hymn sophist composer related to poetry and philosophy. In the second part, each piece comes with its translation on the opposite page, after a notice relating the circumstances of its composition, commenting on its pronunciation, structure, general spirit and main features; the notice also specifies the fundamental historical, institutional and political conditions of the individual oratory production. Based on the 1898 Keil's Berlin edition, the Greek text has been thoroughly revised and freed of many unjustifiable conjectures. A fivefold commentary, in the third part, aims at 1) describing the stages of the argumentation, while identifying the topoi that come into play; 2) explaining and commenting on the numerous quotations that enrich the orator's prose; 3) pointing out stylistic flourishes and linguistic niceties; 4) providing information about mythological allusions and contemporary realia; 5) discussing the opinions of former commentators

The aim of this paper is to present the findings of a pilot investigation into the speech acts of apology and request. The first aim of the study is to compare two data collection techniques: the open-ended written discourse completion task (DCT) and the oral production task (OPT). The second aim is to investigate the use of request and apology strategies by Czech learners of English. The findings suggest that both of the data collection techniques produced very similar data. In terms of requests, most respondents opted for a conventional indirect strategy. In terms of apologies, respondents opted for statements of remorse, offers of repair and account.

Abstract:
In this presentation, I will show that various multimodal resources—such as utterance, prosody, rhythm, schematic images, and bodily reactions—may integratively contribute to the holistic achievement of poeticity. By incorporating the ideas from “ethnopoetics” (Hymes 1981, 1996) and “gesture studies” (McNeill 1992, 2005), I will present a plurimodal analysis of naturally occurring interactions by highlighting the interplay among the verbal, nonverbal, and corporeal representations. With those observations, I confirm that poeticity is not a distinctive quality restricted to constructed poetry or “high” culture, but rather an endowment to any kind of natural discourse that is co-constructed by various semiotic resources. My claim specifically concerns a renewed interest in an ethnopoetic kata ‘form/ shape/ style/ model’ embraced as performative “habitus” among Japanese speakers (Kataoka 2012). Kata, in its broader sense, is stable as well as versatile, often serving as an organizational “template” for performance, which at opportune moments may change its shape and trajectory according to ongoing developments. In other words, preferred structures are not confined to an emergent management of performance, but should also incorporate culturally embedded practices with immediate (re)actions. In order to promote this claim, I explore a case in which mutually coordinated performance is extensively pursued for sharing sympathy and camaraderie. Such a kata-driven construction was typically observed in a highly involved, interactional interview about the Great East Japan Earthquake, in which both interviewer and interviewee were recursively oriented and attuned to the same rhythmic and organizational pattern consisting of an odd-number of kata. Based on these observations, I argue that indigenous principles of organizing discourse are as crucial as the mechanisms of conversational organization, with the higher-order, macro cultural preferences inevitably infiltrating into the micro management of spontaneous talk.

Abstract:
This paper presents the modeling and simulation of a hybrid renewable-energy system. The sizing, availability, and contribution of solar photovoltaic, wind energy and hydro energy can be simulated to determine the viability, stability, and cost effectiveness of such systems. The model allows the user to enter site specific data (hourly, daily, monthly, and annually) such as solar radiation, wind speed and precipitation. Users can select the type and size of wind turbine, hydroelectric turbine, photovoltaic panel and the electrical load placed on the hybrid renewable system. The simulation will determine the total power that can be produced on an hourly, daily, monthly and annual basis, the optimum combination of renewable energies, and usage/storage of each type of renewable energies, given the specified system and the collected data. With the help of HyRES, the model, one can determine which hybrid renewable energy system would best suit a specific site, and also help to determine which type of wind turbine, hydroelectric turbine, or photovoltaic panels would best complement each other for that site.
